Virginia Tech Hokies Preview 2022

So how does Virginia Tech get back to being the double-digit win program that makes a push for the ACC Championship – like it did in the mid-to-late 2000s and in 2016 – and get out of this rut of mediocrity?

Justin Fuente had his good moments as the head coach, but it always seemed like there were too many changes, too many personnel moves, and too many losses in the 50/50 games.

Even after last season, assume Clemson is the star of the ACC show, and Duke and – at least lately – Georgia Tech and Syracuse are going to struggle a wee bit, and then throw everyone else into a bucket and maybe a Wake Forest will come out, or a Pitt, or any of the other good programs.

Again, it’s about the 50/50 games – or the ones that Virginia Tech has a relatively equal shot of winning or losing.

How did it do against teams that finished with 5-to-7 wins? It was 3-5.

2000 was funky with missed games – Virginia Tech was 3-2 against teams that finished with 4-to-6 wins. 2019 and 2018 against teams that finished with 5-to-7 wins? 3-6.

How about that 2011 team that went to the Sugar Bowl? 5-0. How about that 2010 version that went to the Orange? 4-0.

In comes new head coach Brent Pry, a 52-year-old career assistant who knows how to crank up a tough defense. His job will be to provide some stability, work the transfer portal, and win the games that are there for the taking.

There’s no Clemson on the slate. There’s no brutal non-conference game. There are tough road games at North Carolina, Pitt, and NC State, but would you fall off your chair if Virginia Tech won any or all of them? No.

The Hokies might not be there quite yet with all the holes that need filling and the relative lack of star power, but it you notice an early win over Boston College, and maybe a win over West Virginia, and maybe split those road games against North Carolina and Pitt …

Ranking the ACC’s football stadiums based on capacity

Home-field advantage plays a pivotal role in college football, and in the ACC, that advantage is magnified based on varying levels of fan capacities in stadiums.

Fans make a difference in the outcomes of games in sports, and there is no more apparent evidence of that phenomenon than in college football.

Every Saturday, hundreds of thousands of fans pack themselves in stadiums across the country in hopes that their cheers will aid a team in victory.

For Clemson, the fan involvement on gameday has greatly benefited the team’s success. With the aid of thousands of fans screaming, the Tigers have won their last 34 games in Memorial Stadium dating back to Nov. 12, 2016, when Clemson lost to Pittsburgh.

In total, there are 14 football stadiums in the ACC, one for each team. Seven of the 14 can hold 60,000 or more fans, while two are also home to NFL teams on Sundays.

Just like an army, there is strength in numbers for a fan base, so here’s every football stadium in the ACC ranked based on attendance capacities.

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Hokies miss from the Atlantic Division?

The Hokies have to deal with NC State from the Atlantic on a late October Thursday night, but at least that’s coming off a week off. Opening up the ACC season with Boston College isn’t all that bad considering it’s at home, and best of all, there’s no Clemson or Wake Forest to face. They also miss Florida State, Louisville, and Syracuse.

In the Coastal, they have to go to North Carolina and Pitt. That’s a problem, but they get Miami and Virginia at home.

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: It’s going to feel like they’re never at home

The Hokies get a run of three straight September home games all in a 12 day span, and that’s about it for the fun in Blacksburg for a while.

From September 22nd until the regular season finale against Virginia, Virginia Tech gets just two home games. Making this weirder is how it’s all staggered with three road games in four, and then another three road games in four with NC State ending one run and starting another.

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s really not all that bad as long as the team gets used to playing well on the road.

All of the home games are manageable, and the two non-conference road games at Old Dominion and Liberty shouldn’t be a problem if the Hokies are any good, but there might be a wall to hit in mid-November with all the time away from Blacksburg.

The special reason why Virginia Tech has the Yankees’ logo on its helmets in the Pinstripe Bowl

The Hokies are paying a special tribute the Yankees in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Virginia Tech and Maryland are squaring off today in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in a battle of 6-6 teams that are looking to complete their seasons on a high note.

If you’re watching, you might have noticed the Hokies have “NY”, the logo of the Yankees, on the side of their helmets.

Well, there’s a special reason why they have chosen to do that today – after the campus shooting at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007 the Yankees donated $1 million the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund and also played an exhibition game on campus.

Today, Virginia Tech is showing its gratitude toward the Yankees for their support during those difficult days.

Pretty sweet.

Maryland vs Virginia Tech New Era Pinstripe Bowl Preview

Maryland needed a win over Rutgers to get here, and it needs a win to make it a promising offseason for head coach Mike Locksley.

It’s been a bit of a grind to get the program rolling, and consistency has been a huge problem, but the Terps are good at beating the teams they’re supposed to beat, and this is a Virginia Tech team they’re supposed to beat.

Virginia Tech also needed to win its final game to get here. Unlike Maryland – a program trying to keep improving under its current head coach – the reboot is coming for the Hokies with Justin Fuente fired late in the season.

The Brent Pry era isn’t starting quite yet, but future associate head coach JC Price is still around – along with the rest of the assistants – for some continuity as the interim head man.

There was a problem getting the Hokie offense going until late in the year, but the running game became a force with 200 yards or more in five of its last six games including 320 in the bowl-sealing win over Virginia.

Maryland’s run defense hasn’t been anything special, but the offense has one of the nation’s better passing attacks – averaging over 300 yards per game – to make up for it.

Could Bill O’Brien be the next head man at Virginia Tech?

Rumors have begun to circulate that Bill O’Brien could be the next head man at Virginia Tech!

The college football coaching carousel is already nearly out of control. Lincoln Riley jumped from Oklahoma to USC, then Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU. Those are just a couple of the big names that have left their established programs to explore another horizon.

With the carousel spinning faster and faster with each passing moment, rumors begin to fly and it’s hard to figure out what is true and what is simply just a rumor.

One name that has created some smoke around the head coach opening at Virginia Tech is Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. O’Brien is in his first season calling the plays for the Tide and the reviews have been mixed among the Crimson Tide faithful.

O’Brien does have a solid track record as a head coach at the collegiate level. O’Brien took over the Penn State program back in 2012 when the school was placed on NCAA sanctions. In his two seasons in Happy Valley, O’Brien led the Nittany Lions to a 15-9 record with limited scholarship players. The NFL would come calling then and O’Brien took the Houston Texans up on their offer.

There is obviously plenty of smoke around the status of Bill O’Brien and Roll Tide Wire will be here to report as soon as the story develops!
