Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies have more to play for … sort of.

This is the rivalry game that matters for both sides. Virginia Tech owned this for a long, long time before Virginia broke through a few years ago, and a coaching change and all the turmoil isn’t an excuse to lose to that team.

And Virginia Tech needs this win to go bowling.

The team hasn’t been all that awful – the offense has come through enough to get to five wins, being competitive against Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, and West Virginia – and the defense has held up reasonably well.

Consistency hasn’t been a given with this group, but the secondary doesn’t give up a ton of yards, the offense doesn’t give up a ton of turnovers, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Virginia Will Win

Merely being safe and careful and okay doesn’t get it done against Virginia.

The Cavalier defense doesn’t have a pass rush, it doesn’t stop the run, and it’s too easy to move the ball on this group. However, Brennan Armstrong and the passing game bomb away like mad.

Virginia Tech has to be prepared to open it up, and it’s just not equipped to do that against a quarterback and passing game that rolled for 300 yards in every game he played in but the win over Miami.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Oh would this be so, so sweet for Virginia.

The 2019 team beat the Hokies 39-30 to go off to play for the ACC Championship. Virginia lost 15 straight in the series before that going back to 2003, and it lost last year’s regular season finale.

Now it gets to beat its rival for the second time in three seasons and knock it out of a bowl.

The Virginia offense will get held down just enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but Virginia Tech won’t be able to keep up.

Virginia vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Can Brennan Armstrong play?

The Virginia quarterback has been banged up and missed the loss to Notre Dame – the offense didn’t go anywhere without him.

If he plays, Virginia has the passing game to keep up. Pitt is preparing to face him, but if not, the running game has to start doing more and the defense has to start pulling its weight.

But the expectation is that he’ll go. The Virginia attack was so good over the first nine games that it’s still fifth in the nation even after coming up with just 278 yards of total offense last week.

Pitt might have a killer pass rush, but the secondary gives up a whole lot of yards and the defense can get bombed on. Miami was able to roll up 490 yards of total offense and the pass D allowed close to 500 yards over the last two weeks.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Pitt Will Win

If Armstrong is struggling or can’t go, forget it. Virginia can’t keep up.

If that happens, or if Pitt just wins no matter what, it takes the Coastal and goes off to the ACC Championship.

Even if everything is fine with the Cavalier offense, the Pitt defense is stacked up to handle the firepower – at least it can hold serve once in a while. The defensive front that’s third in the nation in sacks jumped all over North Carolina’s Sam Howell early and came up big late.

Yes, the Virginia offense is high-powered and dangerous, but the line allows way too many plays in the backfield, On the flip side, the Cavalier D doesn’t do much of anything to get to the quarterback – it’s last in the ACC in sacks.

Oh yeah, the offense …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The attack might have stalled in the second half against the Tar Heels, but Kenny Pickett still finished with 346 yards with a third straight game with three touchdown passes. The Heisman hopeful now has 32 touchdown passes with four picks, and it’s not going to slow down against this Cavalier D.

Assuming Armstrong is going, it’ll be a back-and-forth shootout with lots of big plays, lots of fun, and lots of excitement in the pivotal game for the Coastal.

Notre Dame vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Who wants to have some fun?

The Notre Dame offense has been able to move the ball steadily and well through the air – hitting 200 yards or more in every game – and the ground attack has been along for the ride at times with a few big plays here and there.

Welcome to the Virginia defense.

The Cavaliers have had a few weeks off, and they needed it after allowing 734 yards to BYU, 570 to Georgia Tech, and getting rocked for 466 yards per game overall.

The Notre Dame offensive line has been a work in progress all year, but it’s playing a wee bit better. Pass protection has been an issue, but there’s no problem this week against a relatively absent Virginia defensive front.

Crank up a balanced offense, rely on a defense that can make big things happen behind the line, and get out with a big statistical performance.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Virginia Will Win

Notre Dame was able to get into a shootout with North Carolina and be just fine, but Virginia’s offense has the ability to take things up to a whole other level.

Yeah, the Cavalier defense has taken the year off, but QB Brennan Armstrong and the offense lead the nation averaging 545 yards per game.

Yeah, the Irish defense has been terrific against the run for most of the year, and yeah, this group is great at taking the ball away, but North Carolina was able to roll up 565 yards, USC was able to throw well, and now it gets a team with two weeks off to gear it all back up.

For all of Virginia’s faults, it was on a four-game winning streak before going to BYU. Something was working right, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a movie trailer …

If you liked the Notre Dame game with North Carolina, you’re going to LOVE this.

The Irish defense is just good enough to come up with a few key takeaways and a necessary stop to survive, but this Virginia offense is going to be relentless.

It’s not going be what Notre Dame wants to do, but it’ll get out of its comfort zone for the second time in a few weeks and get into a back-and-forth fight.

Virginia vs BYU Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is coming back to his old stomping grounds – he was terrific as the BYU head coach from 2005 to 2015 – and he’s bringing a team with a high-powered attack that’s bombing away on everyone.

Only WKU has a better air show than the Cavaliers who are averaging 405 yards per game while not ignoring the ground attack, especially over the four-game winning streak.

BYU has the defense to hold up, but it can’t make mistakes. It’s been awesome overall in turnover margin, but it turned it over four times in the loss to Boise State, and it struggled defensively on third downs in the loss to Baylor and allowed Washington State to convert 64% of its third down tries.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougar pass defense might be able to do just enough to hold up.

It’s used to facing strong passing games – Arizona State, Baylor, Washington State – and held up okay.

It got bombed on by Utah State, but the two turnovers helped on the way to the win. That was the only game the Cougars allowed multiple touchdown passes.

Arizona, Utah, and Baylor all threw one scoring pass, and that’s it along with the two given up to the Aggies. The secondary will allow Virginia to hit the midrange passes, but it’s not going to allow a whole slew of big things.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia is used to playing in close battles – it’s been in fun fights in three of its last four games, winning them all – but it’s not going to generate the takeaways needed to win the Bronco Bowl.

Both teams will bomb away. Expect more than 700 passing yards between the two, but BYU will run a wee bit better.

The home field will matter here. It’s the first time back in Provo for the Cougars since the loss to Boise State, and just the second home game since late September.

Georgia Tech vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Well look at who’s getting the passing game going.

The Yellow Jackets followed up a 359-yard day against Pitt with close to 300 yards through the air in the win over Duke. The running attack has the parts to use whenever needed – even if it’s only averaging 4.2 yards per carry – but as long as Jeff Sims can be accurate and not throw picks – not a given; more on that in a moment – the offense will be fine.

Can Virginia stop the run? It’s not even close.

The Cavalier D has allowed over 200 rushing yards in three of the last five games and over 200 passing yards in every game but the win over William & Mary to start the season.

Georgia Tech will move the ball however it wants to.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia will also move the ball however it wants to, and that will be through the air.

Brennan Armstrong has been a machine, throwing for way, way over 300 yards in every game but the win over Miami with 19 touchdown passes and just six picks.

He might not be accurate over the last month – he’s struggling to hit 60% over his last four games – but that shouldn’t matter. Georgia Tech has the least efficient pass defense in the ACC, getting cranked up over the last three games with Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Duke’s Gunnar Holmberg bombing away.

Armstrong will get his yards, and so will Sims. However, the Georgia Tech quarterback will continue to throw interceptions after giving away two in each of his last two games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech hasn’t been consistent, but it’s been fighting. It’s also in the midst of an every other week pattern – if you care about these things.

The Yellow Jackets have gone L-W-L-W-L-W, and now they get a Virginia Tech that’s on a three-game winning streak and deep in the mix for the Coastal title.

It won’t always be perfect on either side, but both offenses will produce with a whole lot of big plays – Virginia games are like that, except for last week in the 48-0 win over Duke.

It’ll be fun – again Virginia games are like that – with Armstrong and the Cavalier offense being a bit more consistent in the fourth quarter and the defense picking off Sims to help open things up.

Duke vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is working.

It’s got enough balance to be versatile on the fly, it’s keeping the chains moving, and it should be able to keep up with a Virginia team that loves to get into firefights. The Blue Devils struggled a bit against North Carolina, but they cranked up well over 400 yards in every other game so far.

On the flip side, Virginia has been strange. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is usually great at putting together sure-tackling, rock-solid defenses, and this year’s version isn’t one of them.

The Cavaliers allowed 200 yards passing and 200 rushing in three of the last four games, the pass D is mediocre, the run D is far worse, and Duke should be able to take advantage of it.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

This passing game is a whole lot of fun.

Brennan Armstrong has the perfect name for what he does. He’s a tough bomber with a strong enough arm to keep pushing the attack through the problems of the defense – the Cavaliers have hit the 400-yard mark through the air in four of the last five games.

In this, though, the Cavaliers will try to balance things out a wee bit. The Duke run defense hasn’t been anything special, but the secondary has struggled every bit as much.

As long as Armstrong and the passing game can limit the mistakes – Duke can take the ball away – and not give the Blue Devil O easy scoring opportunities, the Cavs should be fine.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There will be a whole lot of points with a whole lot of yards, because that’s what these two teams do.

Lots of O, little D, and with both sides coming up with enough momentum swings to make this interesting. However, Virginia has more pop to pull away as the game goes on. Too many Duke drives will fizzle out in Cavalier territory.

It was yet another difficult week for ranked teams in the ACC.

Sixth-ranked Clemson struggled past Georgia Tech, No. 15 Virginia Tech fell on the road at West Virginia and Michigan State smacked No. 24 Miami in its own building.

Not to mention Pitt’s demise at the hands of Western Michigan.

Each week The Clemson Insider ranks every team in the ACC 1-14 based off their performance from the previous week of competition. Here are TCI’s ACC power rankings after three weeks of the 2021 season.

  1. Clemson – The Tigers looked anemic offensively in a 14-8 win over Georgia Tech at Memorial Stadium. But Clemson’s defense continued to impress and is the only team in the FBS that has not allowed an offensive touchdown. It faces its first true road test on Saturday at North Carolina State.
  2. Virginia Tech – The Hokies fell 27-21 at West Virginia in a big rivalry matchup this past week. But its hard to drop them behind North Carolina who they defeated in the season opener. Virginia Tech hosts Richmond at noon on Saturday.
  3. North Carolina – North Carolina’s offense clicked on a cylinders in a 59-39 win over Virginia this past weekend. Quarterback Sam Howell continued to impress completing 14-of-21 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns while Ty Chandler racked up 198 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. The Tar Heels travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
  4. Virginia – Despite surrendering a halftime lead over North Carolina the Virginia offense rolled in Chapel Hill last week. Brennan Armstrong led the ACC is passing as he completed 39-of-54 passes for 554 yards and four touchdowns. Virginia needs to improve on defense as they host Wake Forest on Friday at 7 p.m.
  5. Wake Forest – The Demon Deacons smacked Florida State 35-14 to remain unbeaten last week. Quarterback Sam Hartman looked stout, and Wake Forest added 225 yards rushing. It faces a tall task at Virginia on Friday night.
  6. N.C. State – The Wolfpack rebounded from a flat performance in Week 2 with a 45-7 win over Furman in Raleigh. NC State faces Clemson at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the renewal of the Textile Bowl rivalry.
  7. Louisville – The Cardinals continued to look like a completely different team in a 52-35 win in a shootout against UCF. Micale Cunningham was at his best despite a hitch in his giddy-up. Louisville travels to Florida State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
  8. Pitt – One week after the Panthers looked like the best team in the Coastal Division, they fell 44-41 to Western Michigan at Heinz Field. Since the Panthers joined a conference in 1991 they have never gone undefeated in non-conference play. Pitt hosts UNH at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
  9. Georgia Tech – The Yellow Jackets showed marked improvement in a 14-8 loss to Clemson at Death Valley. Georgia Tech had multiple opportunities to take a lead at the end of the game but came up short against a stingy defense. They host North Carolina on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
  10. Boston College – The Eagles bounced back after the tough news quarterback Phil Jurkovec could miss the rest of the season and defeated Temple 28-3. The offense lacked the muster brought on by Jurkovec. BC hosts Missouri at noon Saturday.
  11. Miami – The Hurricanes went out with a whimper in a 38-17 loss to Michigan State at home last week. And to add on to the apathy in Miami, quarterback D’Eriq King is doubtful for Saturday’s matchup with Central Connecticut.
  12. Duke – The Blue Devil’s defense showed up in a 30-23 win over Northwestern as Duke held off a late surge. Duke hosts Kansas on Saturday at 4 p.m.
  13. Syracuse – The Orange responded to last week’s loss with a lopsided 62-24 win over Albany in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse hosts Liberty in a tough Group of 5 matchup on Friday night at 8 p.m.
  14. Florida State – As if things could not get worse in Tallahassee, Florida State looked uninspired in a 35-14 loss to Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. It marked the first time the Seminoles lost consecutive games to the Demon Deacons since it dropped three straight from 2006-08. The Noles host Louisville on Saturday at 3:30 as they look for their first win of the season.

Notre Dame Football vs. ACC teams all-time

How has Notre Dame fared all-time against each member of the ACC? We’ve updated the numbers.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, if you consider yourself a Notre Dame football fan in even the smallest amount you’ve likely heard that the 2020 football season saw Notre Dame play an ACC schedule.

That got me wondering what kind of success Notre Dame has had against ACC foes.  Some have had long histories of playing the Irish while others only really came into the picture since Notre Dame’s “friends with benefits” deal went down just over a half-decade ago.

So how has Notre Dame fared against everyone in the ACC and who won the most recent match-ups?
