Virginia vs Duke Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Eventually the offense will get going.

It’s been night-and-day different – that’s a nice way of saying awful – compared to the 2021 version that bombed away all over the place, but the parts are still in place to do a whole lot more.

Brennan Armstrong almost pulled out the Syracuse game last week – the Cavaliers lost 22-20 – and now he gets a Duke defense that failed miserably against the two teams on the schedule so far that can throw.

Northwestern threw for 435 yards against the Blue Devils, and Kansas star Jalon Daniels went off for 324 last week to go along with the team’s 213-yard ground game.

Armstrong is too good for the O – especially on third downs – to be this bad. Virginia is 118th in the nation in third down conversions, and Duke is dead last in the ACC in third down D.

Or …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Duke Will Win

Maybe Virginia’s offense just isn’t very good.

The line is getting Armstrong beaten up, the running game hasn’t been able to take over when needed, and between the ten turnovers and the team’s 31 penalties, there are WAY too many mistakes.

Duke might not be perfect, but it’s not screwing up – the two turnovers so far weren’t any big deal.

The passing game has been effective because the O line leads the ACC in pass prediction, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Virginia pass rush be enough to get this done?

The offense isn’t playing well, but the defense has stepped up with a ton of sacks, the D forced four takeaways against both Illinois and Syracuse, and the offense should be able to finally move against a Blue Devil defense that clunked against the two Power Five teams on the slate.

There won’t be anything pretty about this. It’s supposed to be cold, rainy, and the wind is going to be a problem.

It’ll come down to defense and running game, and Virginia will be better in both areas.

Duke vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is working.

It’s got enough balance to be versatile on the fly, it’s keeping the chains moving, and it should be able to keep up with a Virginia team that loves to get into firefights. The Blue Devils struggled a bit against North Carolina, but they cranked up well over 400 yards in every other game so far.

On the flip side, Virginia has been strange. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is usually great at putting together sure-tackling, rock-solid defenses, and this year’s version isn’t one of them.

The Cavaliers allowed 200 yards passing and 200 rushing in three of the last four games, the pass D is mediocre, the run D is far worse, and Duke should be able to take advantage of it.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

This passing game is a whole lot of fun.

Brennan Armstrong has the perfect name for what he does. He’s a tough bomber with a strong enough arm to keep pushing the attack through the problems of the defense – the Cavaliers have hit the 400-yard mark through the air in four of the last five games.

In this, though, the Cavaliers will try to balance things out a wee bit. The Duke run defense hasn’t been anything special, but the secondary has struggled every bit as much.

As long as Armstrong and the passing game can limit the mistakes – Duke can take the ball away – and not give the Blue Devil O easy scoring opportunities, the Cavs should be fine.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There will be a whole lot of points with a whole lot of yards, because that’s what these two teams do.

Lots of O, little D, and with both sides coming up with enough momentum swings to make this interesting. However, Virginia has more pop to pull away as the game goes on. Too many Duke drives will fizzle out in Cavalier territory.

Why Virginia Will Win

You don’t think Virginia is going to be a wee bit fired up to get back out there after the 81-60 loss at Florida State a few days ago?

The system broke down. The defense couldn’t stop the Seminoles from anywhere, especially on the outside. After a week to rest up and get ready, here’s where the defense cranks up the production again, but it all starts with cleaning up everything on the boards.

Duke actually isn’t that bad, but the biggest issue has been at taking advantage of its chances. It doesn’t do enough on the board, it’s awful on the free throw line, and it’s not doing anything to stop teams from hitting from three …

Why Duke Will Win

But lately, the Blue Devils are doing everything right.

The defense has stepped up at stopping teams from hitting from the outside – finally – and the shooting has been there. The O has hit 50% or better in each of the last four games with 84 or more in three of the last four.

Can the Blue Devils follow the FSU blueprint? To beat Virginia you have to get that extra pass or two – it’s no coincidence that the four Cavalier losses came in the four games the team allowed the most assists.

Duke has come up with double-digit assists in each of the last four game. Get to at least 15 and have a shot to get the win.

What’s Going To Happen

Duke is playing like the team that can get this done, but Virginia is going to want to grind this down to a stop.

The Blue Devils aren’t turning it over, they’re hitting everything from the field, and …

It’s not going to be enough.

Duke was able to beat NC State and Wake Forest, but it’s about to run into a wall against this Virginia team that’s about to get its mojo back.
