Against the spread

ST. JOHN’S +13.5 (-115) is a strong play with the one-two punch of Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie. They’re an outstanding duo, and can help the Red Storm at least hang around by less than 12 points. The Johnnies have been double-digit ‘dogs just once, covering at UConn Jan. 12 in an overtime loss.

While Villanova -13.5 (-107) is 7-2 ATS across the past nine, those two non-covers have come in the past three games as a double-digit favorite.

Over/Under

The UNDER 139.5 (-107) is the lean, but it’s only worth a small-unit play. The Under has cashed in four straight outings for St. John’s and six in a row against teams with a winning overall record. The Under is also 25-11-1 in the previous 37 as a road underdog.

For Villanova, the Under has hit in seven in a row against winning teams, while going 5-1 in the past six games at home.

Villanova shot 28.2% over back-to-back losses to Baylor and Creighton last month. The Wildcats have won four straight games since, and that streak started with a Dec. 21 win over Xavier.

‘Nova beat the Musketeers 71-58 in Philadelphia. The Wildcats outshot and out-rebounded Xavier and were a plus-5 in the turnover battle.

The Musketeers have played just one game since that loss to Villanova. That one game was an impressive 87-72 win at Butler Friday. Xavier shot a season-best 55.1% in the win over the Bulldogs.

In between the Muskies’ games in Philadelphia and Indianapolis, Xavier had two games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

Villanova has been sharp enough over its last four games as to be a solid play here up to -130 of -135. Subtle recent trend lines in rebounding and defense point to the Wildcats. And ‘Nova figures to have an edge in the exchanges of turnovers and 3-pointers.

Against the spread

The Wildcats have played a difficult schedule and are battle-tested heading into this key road game in Cincy.

They did shoot just 24.8% from distance over a five-game stretch from Dec. 7 to Jan. 1, and it’s that kind of 3-point performance that will open the door for Xavier.

But that stretch included a game against the Musketeers, and Xavier couldn’t capitalize because of Villanova’s strong defense.

BACK THE WILDCATS +1.5 (-107). But consider this as a secondary play to the above money-line wager.

Over/Under

Figure Villanova winning the pace battle in a tortoise-vs.-hare matchup. Give the Under just a sliver of a lean at the current number. It’s not enough of a lean to warrant any action.

The Bears have registered eight wins in eight tries while going 5-1-1 ATS across the past seven games overall. However, Baylor’s most impressive win is against Michigan State on a neutral court Nov. 26. We don’t know a lot about Baylor yet, but we will after Sunday.

I like VILLANOVA (+155) to pick up the road victory. The Wildcats have been challenged more so far this season, playing in high-intensity environments like UCLA, as well as playing Purdue in a neutral site. The Wildcats have faced some of the top teams in the nation, while this is the first marquee game for Baylor.

Against the spread

VILLANOVA +3.5 (-105) is worth a look, although if you like the Wildcats they’re a much better value just playing straight up. It won’t be easy toppling Baylor in their place, but they’ll get it done in the end.

Over/Under

UNDER 138.5 (-115) is the way to go here. Both of these teams play a strong brand of defense. The Under is 4-2 in the last six games for Baylor and has connected in four consecutive outings for Villanova.

Villanova has already played three games against ranked foes. The Wildcats went 1-2 in contests against UCLA (loss), Tennessee (win) and Purdue (loss). They’re looking for an eighth straight win over local rival La Salle after a Thanksgiving rest.

VU’s leading scorer is G Justin Moore, who averages 17.8 points per contest. Moore logged a breakout 25-point game when the Wildcats last met La Salle Dec. 1, 2019.

The Explorers are coming off a 61-58 victory over Army Nov. 20, but La Salle had been on its heels defensively in a couple of earlier losses. La Salle heads into this game ranked 272nd in the nation in defense with 73.3 points allowed per game. A year ago, the Explorers ranked 12th in the 14-team Atlantic-10, allowing 73.5 PPG.

PASS on the juice-filled prices here. A -1500/+1500 tandem is a reasonable starting point, and value gets lost the more removed it is from that intersection.

Against the spread

‘Nova last played a week ago when they dropped an 80-74 game against a Purdue team that went 10-of-23 from distance and found some success on the offensive glass. The Wildcats are 38-17-2 ATS across their last 57 outings after an ATS loss.

Villanova and La Salle are at opposite ends of the spectrum as far as ball security goes. Look for the Wildcats to leverage that disparity to a great degree while clamping down on the boards in this one. The lean is a small-to-moderate one, so consider a partial-unit play on VILLANOVA -18.5 (-108) in a hometown bounce-back effort.

Over/Under

Along the same lines as the ATS play, look for a renewed defensive effort from a Wildcat five which plays at a snail’s pace. On neutral hardwood and with the Explorers being more a near-average team on defense than what surface numbers show, BACK THE UNDER 139.5 (-108).

VILLANOVA (-140) isn’t overpriced in this neutral-site battle in Connecticut. The Wildcats are the better team, deeper, and they’re more battle tested, too, after a narrow overtime loss at UCLA, another Top 5 team.

Against the spread

VILLANOVA -2.5 (-105) is a little cheaper against the number, and all they have to do is win by a bucket. Either ‘Nova on the money line, or against the spread, is the way to go. Tennessee +2.5 (-120) won’t be ready for this measuring-stick game, but the experience of facing a top-tier program and the subsequent loss will do them well in the long run.

Over/Under

OVER 139.5 (-112) is the slight lean here, but play it lightly. Villanova has hit the Over in each of its three games so far, and Tennessee has hit the Over in its two games, too. The Over is 12-5 in the past 17 neutral-site games for ‘Nova, too, while going 9-3 in the past 12 neutral-site games for Tennessee.

The Wildcats blasted Mount St. Mary’s in the tune-up opener, 91-51. Four starters went for 13 or more points, and Big East Player of the Year candidate Collin Gillespie dropped in three triples with 13 points, 5 assists and 2 steals.

The Bruins also had a lay-up against Cal State-Bakersfield in the opener, winning 95-58. Like ‘Nova, UCLA had four starters in double digits, including 19 points apiece from Jules Bernard and Johnny Juzang.

Money line

You can bet UCLA (-160) and not have to worry about the points. That’s fine. It’s a little cheaper to take the home side laying the two and a half, but this is going to be a close game.

Just playing the ML might be the way to go.

Against the spread

UCLA -2.5 (-122) is worth playing, although I could see this game ending on a buzzer-beater. That’s how evenly matched these teams are. This will be a star-studded affair and a fun one to watch.

Bernard and Juzang are going to put on a show.

Over/Under

OVER 140.5 (-108) is the play. Each of these teams flexed their offensive muscle against cupcakes in the opener but will face much more resistance here.

Still, both of these teams are too talented not to get into at least the 70’s. That will make for a rather easy opener, as long as the pace is fast right out of the gate.

I think the Over is the best bet on the board.

The Wildcats will enter as heavy underdogs despite being 3-0. Villanova scored 102 points and gave up just 6 over its first two games. The Wildcats then topped Richmond 34-27 last week. ‘Nova went 2-2 last season.

The Nittany Lions have two one-score wins against top-25 opponents. QB Sean Clifford passed for at least 230 yards in all three games.

PASS on the money line.

No one should ever be betting 15 times the potential return. College football upsets happen, and while this shouldn’t be one, the money line just isn’t worth it.

Against the spread

“LEAN” to VILLANOVA +29.5 (-108) as it has played solid football this season.

While Penn State has moved the ball with Clifford, its strength has been defense. The Nittany Lions gave up 20 or fewer points in all three games.

They managed a 31-point thrashing of Ball State two weeks ago, but that team was crushed by Wyoming. I expect Penn State to have control, but a 30-point win is unlikely.

‘Nova QB Daniel Smith had 2 or more touchdowns in each game this season. He can move the ball and threw for 350 yards against Richmond. He should be able to manage a few successful drives.

Over/Under

BET the OVER 53.5 (-108) as Penn State should be put up points.

Penn State put up 44 points against its only unranked opponent. If it can get into the 40s, this game should bounce over 53 points. ‘Nova has a competent offense, and we’ll see if it’s actually the real deal against an elite defense.

Again, Penn State should take care of business, but if Smith and company can put together two touchdowns, this Over should hit.
