Gus Johnson had enough of Villanova and Creighton’s poor shooting, invoked ‘analytics’ and ‘Steph Curry’

Analytics? Steph Curry? Where was Johnson going with this?

On Saturday night, Villanova (-7.5 favorites) won the Men’s Big East title, beating Creighton 54-48. It’s the Wildcats’ fifth conference title in the last seven seasons as Jay Wright’s crew continues to establish itself as a vaunted blue-blood. But listen to legendary play-by-play commentator Gus Johnson, you’d almost have thought they didn’t deserve it.

You see, for most of the contest, Villanova (and Creighton) were abysmal from behind the arc. That’s not a significant development, but it’s also unsurprising. It’s the college game, after all. Not everyone’s going to be a lights-out three-point shooter the way seemingly every NBA team rosters at least two trey magicians. Factor in the big finale of a conference tourney, and the pressure only tightens such a flaw.

At one point, the two teams were a combined 4-of-38 from three (Villanova finished 8-of-32, Creighton finished 3-of-29). It is here where Johnson had enough and decided to voice his fervent displeasure on air.

For a conference tournament game that most would probably like to forget– even Villanova–I’d say we have a strange rant on our hands.

First, we have Johnson invoking “analytics,” as if the Creighton and Villanova men’s basketball programs employ dedicated, well-compensated teams of data scientists like they’re professional teams.

Then, Johnson decries a future Basketball Hall of Famer, most famous for prolific three-point shooting: Steph Curry.

“Steph Curry is ruining the game of basketball,” Johnson said. “He’s a phenomenon and everyone thinks they can be Steph Curry and it just doesn’t make any sense.”

I don’t know what Curry has to do with a bunch of decidedly not professional college kids deciding to jack up a lot of shots while having an off-day, but alright. I wasn’t aware poor three-point shooting only started in basketball games after Curry became a national phenomenon. Before Curry’s Cinderalla run with Davidson in 2009, everyone, for decades, not only consistently made incredible decisions from behind the arc–they also basically made every shot. We all know that. We were there.

March is only beginning. Johnson will have to get accustomed to amateur players occasionally shooting into what feels like a closed rim over the next few weeks. It might be even worse if it’s in the clutch. It’s that simple.

Providence vs Villanova Game Preview

Why Providence Will Win

The Big East champion – the first regular season title in the program’s history – can now tune up a bit.

Better yet, it can get some rest and get ready for the Big East Tournament, but that’s not what it’s going to do.

This continues to be a strange team that defies logic and reason. It shoots well okay, it does an okay job from three, and its defense loads up enough when needed in key moments.

It’s this simple. You have to shoot lights out or Providence will find a way to win.

It’s 1-3 when allowing teams to make 49% or more of their shots, and it’s 23-0 against teams that can’t get there.

Villanova has only shot 49% or better nine times in 28 games.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova can send a message.

Yeah, Providence has already won the Big East regular season title, but that means a fat load of jack squat over the next few weeks once tournament season starts. Now it’s all about the sprint, and this is where the Wildcats can send a message.

It’s not like the Friars are going to want to take it easy in their regular season finale, but a win by Villanova could change the attitude and psyche going into the conference tournament …

Blah, blah, blah. Villanova can shoot its way to the win.

The Wildcats beat the Friars two weeks ago on the road by hitting 51% from the field and doing a great job from three and on the line. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova has lost once at home. It’s not going to lose here.

The offense will be good, the defense will be great, and it’ll come up with a strong win to go 2-0 against the – for the moment – Big East champs.

Villanova vs UConn Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

The Wildcats are on fire.

They can’t beat Marquette, but they’re 15-2 – those two losses were to the Golden Eagles – in their last 17 games including an 85-74 win over UConn in early February.

They’re not just relying on the threes like they normally do, but they’re getting them.

They’re crushing it on the free throw line and were rolling overall from the field against everyone but that M team.

UConn doesn’t shoot enough threes, and it commits way too many fouls – both major problems to try beating Villanova right now.

Really, how good are the Wildcats shooting? They’re No. 1 in the nation on the free throw line and averaging nine made threes per game.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UConn Will Win

Villanova doesn’t have enough of an inside defensive presence and it’s about to have a problem on the boards.

UConn only came up with three blocks in the first meeting, and that’s an aberration. Even worse, it had 19 rebounds – the next game against that Marquette team that Villanova can’t handle, UCOnn had 43 boards in the win.

It’s not that UConn is unbeatable at home but it only loses when it can’t make anything. It’s 12-0 when it hit more than 32% from the field at home, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will be looking to make a massive statement.

It might be playing well lately, but beating Villanova will mean everything to make a push in the Big East regular season title hunt. Lose, and forget about catching Providence and all but blow off getting by Villanova.

UConn will shoot just well enough overall – and will be good enough on the boards – to win in a tense, entertaining fight.

Villanova vs Georgetown Game Preview

Why Georgetown Will Win

Georgetown can hit the boards.

The defense might not be anything great, and it might not force a whole lot of mistakes, but it’s able to hit the boards hard and should be able to come up with enough offensive rebounds to come up with plenty of second chance points.

The Hoyas lost the first time around 85-74, but they were able to make almost all of their free throws and weren’t hit all that hard from the outside.

Keep Villanova off the free throw line and hot it to under ten made threes, and Georgetown will be doing its job to keep this close.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Villanova Will Win

Georgetown has lost 15 straight for a reason.

Yeah, it can rebound, but it’s awful at guarding teams from the outside – almost everyone hits 40% from three lately against this defense – and there’s just not enough rebounds to be had. It has allowed teams to make 45% or more of its shots in the last five games, and letting teams hit half of their shots has been close to the norm.

Villanova might not be consistent lately from three, but it’s great from the field and amazing on the free throw line. Georgetown doesn’t have the defense to hold up.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone is getting fat on the Hoya defense, and now Villanova gets to have its turn again.

Even if the threes aren’t dropping like they normally are, the Wildcats will still do far more from the outside than the Hoyas will, and they’ll pull away by being terrific on the free throw line.

Villanova vs Providence Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

Providence doesn’t force mistakes and Villanova doesn’t make them.

The Friar D isn’t all that bad overall, but it doesn’t apply nearly enough pressure and doesn’t come up with any steals. Forget about the transition points against a Villanova O that turns the ball over fewer than ten times per game.

No, the Wildcats haven’t been all that hot lately from the outside, but they’re brilliant on the free throw line, they’ve been brilliant from the field, and they have the ability to win this simply be being better at shooting.

Providence is 1-2 when allowing teams to hit better than 47% from the field. Villanova has done that eight times and is 11-0 when hitting 45% of their shots or more.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Providence Will Win

Providence takes its game up a few notches at home.

The team has been outstanding since early January with eight straight wins by making its threes when it takes them, and it’s got the ability to work inside as well as out to match Villanova shot for shot.

And it can guard the three.

The Wildcats don’t have to hit from the outside to win this, but if they aren’t dropping there’s a problem. They 4-4 when they don’t make at least 30% of their threes and they’re 15-2 when they do.

Providence has held teams to 30% of under 12 times and is 19-0 when keeping teams under 40% from three.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Providence’s big moment at home, and it’s about to come up big.

Villanova is used to being everyone’s big game and it’s used to hostile environments, but it hasn’t faced a whole slew of defensive killers. The Friars about about take up their game a few notches.

Villanova vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Seton Hall Will Win

The Pirates can rebound and will keep rebounding.

They lost to Villanova 73-67 the first time around when it didn’t rebound and gave up 41 – that’s not normally what they do.

They’re shooting okay lately, but they’re on a three-game wining streak because they’ve been great on the glass and they’re making lots and lots of free throws.

To beat Villanova you have to keep it rom getting to the free throw line – fouls aren’t usually a big problem for the Pirates. You have to keep it from getting a whole slew of open shots, and lately the defense has been great at slowing down the three. And …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova has been smoking from the field over the last few games, and goodnight if it gets to the line on a regular basis.

The Wildcats are No. 1 in the nation in free throw shooting percentage hitting 83% of their tries and they’re deadly when they make 42% from the field.

The threes are nice – of course Villanova is better when the outside shots are dropping – but again, all it takes is 42% going 15-1 with that one loss to Purdue back before Thanksgiving. However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall has been fine against hot shooting teams, at least overall from the field. It’s problem is when teams hit the three.

Villanova can do both.

Seton Hall has a good enough defense and is good enough on the glass to keep this from being a runaway home win for the Wildcats, but it’s not shooting well enough overall against the okay defenses to pull this off.
