Villanova vs St. John’s Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

We already did this a week ago and Villanova didn’t have too many problems handling the St. John’s high-powered offense.

The Wildcats won on the free throw line, they did a nice job from the field, and they went off from three. It also helped that the defense that’s been solid all year at guarding the three kept the Red Storm from doing anything outside.

For all of the good things the St. John’s offense does, it’s been awful at times over last few weeks from three, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why St. John’s Will Win

It still manages to stay in games when it’s not hitting from the outside.

It was lousy from three against Villanova – hitting just 4-of-21 tries – and it was still sort of around in the 11-point loss. It couldn’t hit a thing a Butler a few days ago and won.

There are a whole lot of assists and a whole lot of points off of mistakes to find other ways to score when the outside shots aren’t dropping. It’s a fun team that knows hot to get up and down the floor. Even though Villanova plays a good style of D, the first time around was an aberration.

St. John’s isn’t scoring just 62 points this time around, and now it’s in Madison Square Garden. So …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much can the St. John’s offense get going? When it scored more than 83 points it’s 9-0, and when it gets more than 75 it’s 12-2.

Villanova has only allowed more than 75 points five times, and it only gave up more than 83 once – and it took overtime for UCLA to get there.

The Red Storm will be far stronger offensively than they were the first time around against Villanova, but they’re not going to come up with enough over the finishing kick.

The Wildcats will come back roaring in the final moments when they need to.

UConn vs Villanova Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies might be a bit inconsistent offensively, and the shooting has struggled from the outside lately – and didn’t show up at all in the loss to Creighton a few days ago – but the inside presence and the blocks and big defensive plays are still there.

Georgetown was able to shoot well in its 96-73 loss to the Huskies last week, but that’s been it for the offensive pop over the six games against this D.

UConn is still 14th in the nation an on top of the Big East in opposing shooting percentage, and now it just has to get that O going just a little bit.

As long as the defense continues to keep games low scoring – four of the last five games the Huskies held the opponent to under 60 points, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova should be able to handle itself just fine in a low scoring fight.

It has a problem in shootouts when its own three-point shooting isn’t hot. When it gets down to setting up the offense and moving the ball around to get the right shot, things are usually fine. When it gets to make it about free throws, forget it.

No one in the nation is better on the free-throw line – the Wildcats are crushing it lately, hitting well over 90% in 2022 – but they have to get there first. That means attacking UConn on the inside, accepting that a few blocks will be coming, and plan on getting hacked.

UConn might play great defense, but it also commits a ton of fouls.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can Villanova all but put this away with a few threes?

As good as UConn is, it isn’t great at stopping teams from three, and Villanova keeps teams to 31% or better from the outside. UConn doesn’t have to bomb away, but it has to make the shots it takes.

How important are the threes? The Huskies are 14-1 when they make 29% or more from three, and they’re 1-4 when they don’t. Villanova should be able to D up when it has to.

Villanova vs Marquette Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

Stop the three, stop Marquette.

It’s not that the Golden Eagles can’t find other ways to score inside and on the move, but they’re all about hitting the outside shot going 9-0 when they make 38% or more of their threes – including nailing 45% in the 57-54 win over Villanova a few weeks ago.

That was an aberration.

Villanova is normally great at stopping the three – only six teams have been able to hit 38% or more. The Wildcats are 14-1 against teams that don’t get to 38%, and on the other side, they’re a whole lot better at making the three than they were in the first meeting.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Marquette Will Win

Speaking of threes, you have to be able to hit them to keep up with Villanova.

Yeah, the Wildcats are usually outstanding at stopping the three, but you have to take them to make them, and Marquette will take them.

It’ll be a volume thing. The Golden Eagles jacked up 29 tries in the first meeting and hit a season-high 13. That’s sort of the deal with them here. They don’t get offensive rebounds, but if they can get to double-digit threes, they’re right there.

Marquette is 9-0 when hitting ten ore more from three, and 6-7 when it doesn’t. And …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova is 2-4 when allowing teams to hit nine or more from the outside. The Wildcats have been great in the three games since the loss to Marquette, but they also went against teams that weren’t able to connect from the outside well enough.

It’ll be another close, tough fight, but at home, Marquette will bust past the loss to Providence with a good enough shooting night to survive.

St. John’s vs Villanova Game Preview

Why St. John’s Will Win

The Red Storm can’t hang with Villanova shot for shot, but they can hit from three, and they can move.

They can’t force mistakes against one of the most careful teams in college basketball, but they can hit the offensive glass hard and they’re fantastic at coming up with steals – just a few will be okay.

St. John’s can move the ball around well, too, and they come up with a lot more assists than Villanova does. To make this work, the team has to move, keep moving, and it has to make this a shootout.

It’s 11-1 when it scores more than 75 points and 0-6 when it doesn’t. Make this about volume shots, get Villanova out of its controlling pace, and …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova has allowed more than 75 points just four times.

Granted, it was 1-3 in those games, but the team has a way of making everyone bog down a bit and relying on the defense that forces teams to hit fewer than 40% of their shots.

But it’s this simple. To beat Villanova you have to be able to guard the three. St. John’s is one of the worst teams in America at three-point defense.

You have to keep the Wildcats from getting to the free throw line, because no one shoots better from the stripe. St. John’s is gets hit with a whole lot of fouls.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

St. John’s should be able to make this interesting if it can somehow generate a whole slew of points in transition, and those have to come off of rebounds.

There won’t be enough of them.

Villanova will be too good from the outside, St. John’s will lose big in the free throw battle, and an entertaining game will become a bit out of hand late.

Izzo hints at Michigan State hosting Duke, playing Villanova next season

It appears Michigan State will once again have a loaded non-conference schedule next season.

[mm-video type=video id=01f2pav0x1m3h4yep3a7 playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f2pav0x1m3h4yep3a7/01f2pav0x1m3h4yep3a7-220dbd1cb0cca8f7968f4c0f736468bc.jpg]

It appears Michigan State will once again have a loaded non-conference schedule next season.

Head coach Tom Izzo has historically tested his squad with a tough non-conference schedule and next year appears to be no different based on comments from an interview on Tuesday. Izzo said on “The Audrey Dahlgren Show” that the Spartans “may have” match-ups with Duke and Villanova this next season — with the game against the Blue Devils being at home.

Here’s a pair of tweets from MLive’s Kyle Austin with more insight on Izzo’s comments:

As pointed out by Austin in the tweets above, it would make sense for the Spartans to play Duke at home as part of their trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium last year. Whether that’s part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, though, is unknown.

The Spartans’ match-up with Villanova as part of the Gavitt Games would also make a ton of sense. Michigan State played at Seton Hall two years ago in their last Gavitt Games match-up so that could suggest the Wildcats would also come to the Breslin Center this year.

Michigan State is already scheduled to play Kansas in the Champions Classic this season and will participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis — which includes Baylor, UConn, Syracuse, Arizona State, Auburn, Loyola Chicago and VCU. So it’s safe to say the Spartans will have a loaded non-conference slate if Duke and Villanova are in fact added to the schedule this year.

Keep an eye out for a more formal announcement on the 2021-22 schedule, but Michigan State fans should definitely be excited about what this upcoming season’s slate will feature.

The first round is in the books of our NCAA Tournament simulation and though there were a few upsets, the big names are still here and provide an eventful day of games in the round thirty-two for us to enjoy.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

East Region

Final Score: No.1 Dayton 96, No. 8 Colorado 89

Cleveland, OH–The arena was full in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon as Dayton Flyers fans packed in tight. It took more than regulation in this one for the Flyers to advance on, it also took a double-double from star big man Obi Toppin with 26 points and 12 rounds.

Colorado attempted the upset but might have ultimately been doomed from beyond the arc, finishing just 6-23 on the night from deep. Mckinley Wright IV led his team for the second straight game with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The No. 1 seed Flyers advance on with a tough test ahead in the Auburn Tigers and maybe one of their bigger obstacles of the season in a team with athleticism and size like nothing you can compare to in the Atlantic-10.

Final Score: No. 5 Auburn 85, No.4 Wisconsin 65

Sacramento, CA–The goal hasn’t changed for the Tigers and unfortunately for the Wisconsin Badgers they were just another roadblock for Auburn en route to the Sweet Sixteen.

Bruce Pearl’s squad looked focused and shut down the Badger’s second-half offensive efforts, outscoring Wisconsin 41-25 after half time. Kobe King was the only Badger to reach double-digit scoring, ending the night with just 13 points.

While the Tigers were led by freshman Isaac Okoro with 19 points, 5 rebounds and clutch performance from the field, going 8-11 on the night. They advance on to face the No. 1 seed in the region in Dayton and have to keep focus to continue on to the Elite Eight and beyond.

Final Score: No. 3 Duke 77, No. 6 Iowa 66

Greensboro, NC–It was a duel effort by Tre Jones and Cassius Stanley who led Duke with 14 points a piece. But they weren’t alone as three other Blue Devil’s finished the night with double-digits in their eleven point win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa big man Luka Garza gave it his all as he led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds. But it wasn’t enough as the Hawkeyes couldn’t hold off a late second half surge by the Blue Devils to seal the win and send Fran McCaffery’s group home early. They continue on to face this corner of the bracket’s Cinderella, a No. 10 seed who might not fit the mold but don’t let them fool you as they already have two upsets in the bag with room for much more.

Final Score: No. 10 Arizona State 88, No. 2 Villanova 86

Albany, NY–The Sun Devils are on a roll! As they pack their bags and head to New York City with a two-point victory over two-time tournament Champion Villanova and head coach Jay Wright.

Arizona State couldn’t miss as they went a combined 50.8% from the field and ended the night with six different Sun Devil’s in double figures. It was floor general Remy Martin who led the way with 17 points, 8 assists and three steals. Villanova did all they could and were led by Saddiq Bey with 24 points but this is the Sun Devil’s weekend as they aren’t leaving the east coast just yet.

Watch Villanova Wildcats Live Online.

The Villanova Wildcats have had a strong start to the 2019-2020 season, storming through the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 9-2 record and a ranking in the top 10. Now they look to back up that ranking with a strong performance in Big East play with stiff competition to be had up and down the conference the rest of the way.

Next game: @ Marquette, Jan. 4, 2:00 p.m. ET

TV Channels: FOX, FS1

Villanova’s performance in non-conference play has inspired confidence ahead of the Big East season, thanks primarily to the team’s win over the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in December. That 56-55 win saw Villanova hold the Jayhawks to 43 percent shooting for the game, slowing the No. 1 team in the nation down enough to be beaten by a late three-pointer by Jermaine Samuels. In conference play, bearing down on defense the way Villanova played against Kansas will take Jay Wright’s team a long way.

The theme of the season for this Villanova team has been balanced. Heading into the conference schedule, Villanova has five players averaging double figures. The leading scorer for this team is Colin Gillespie, but Saddiq Bey, Justin Moore, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and the aforementioned Samuels are all double-figure scorers for a team that has no problem sharing the basketball. With several players that can beat teams at any given time, it is no surprise that Villanova put together one of the best non-conference seasons in the Big East.

Ohio State’s blowout win over Villanova just got a lot more impressive

Ohio State blew out Villanova, and the Wildcats just defeated the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks, helping boost that win on Ohio State’s resume.

The Ohio State Buckeyes dominated the Villanova Wildcats a few weeks ago. The mid-November game was the first one to put Ohio State on the map. They’ve since risen to No. 3 and are currently No. 5.

Back in that game, Ohio State led at halftime 40-22. It was dominant throughout that entire game, and it really wasn’t close at any point. Winning by 25, it was just a complete performance from the Buckeyes.

The Wildcats were then ranked No. 10. Now, entering today, they were sitting at No. 18 — all set to matchup with not Ohio State, but the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks.

With a drama-filled ending of 56-55, the Wildcats came out on top to knock off the No. 1 ranked team. Without a signature victory, ‘Nova needed this win to solidify itself as a top threat in the eyes of the public.

While building their reputation, Villanova also help Ohio State, who absolutely obliterated the Wildcats.

And, to go along with bolstering Ohio State’s resume, the Cats will now give the Buckeyes a chance to leap into the top spot with a win over Kentucky.

Ohio State leapfrogs Nova, Kentucky in CBS Updated Top 25

The Ohio State Buckeyes, behind the play of a couple new freshman, and returning guys like Kaleb Wesson, are looking like a top ten team.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, behind the play of three four-star recruits and Kaleb Wesson, have entered into the nation’s college basketball top ten. They do so on the back of a dominant effort against Villanova.

The Buckeyes, who had one of their best-recruiting classes of the decade coming into this season, opened up the preseason at No. 18. Now at No. 16, the Buckeyes are looking at a promising jump in the AP Poll.

For now, we’ll take a look at the Thursday edition of the CBS Sports’ updated top 25.

They have Ohio State at No. 10, jumping both Villanova and the former top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. However, in just a few short weeks, it’ll get its shot against the latter half of those programs.

CBS Sports’ columnist Gary Parrish had this to say on the Buckeyes impressive victory and terrific all-around start.

“OSU shot 60.0% from the field in Wednesday’s win over Villanova. Duane Washington was one of five Buckeyes to reach double-figures in points.”

Now 3-0, the Buckeyes are far past that concerning start against Cincinnati.

Also tallying a win over UMass Lowell, the Buckeyes entered their matchup with Nova confident with D.J. Carton starting to get acclimated to the speed of college basketball and Kaleb Wesson looking as dominant (and trimmed down) as ever.

Carton, Wesson and Washington Jr. led the Buckeyes against Nova, and it was an absolute show.

Now the Buckeyes will be preparing for Stetson this coming Monday. By then, we should officially be calling Ohio State a top-ten team one would think.
