Jamaal Williams told us how he’s getting Aaron Jones into anime — and where you should start

Honestly, the whole interview is a lesson in the power of friendship.

Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams haven’t been teammates since 2020. That doesn’t mean they don’t still hang out — or team up to chat about Japanese cartoons.

Williams is the NFL’s preeminent anime expert, and at the 2024 Super Bowl Radio Row, he took us through the beginner’s guide to the genre, including how he introduced the current Green Bay Packers’ back to it.

Jones might only be able to process an episode at a time and is quite ready for a Chainsaw Man marathon, but he admitted Williams — who rolled up to the interview at Bounty’s Wingman shack replete in an old school Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers t-shirt — has got him watching. Especially when the weather gets cold up in Wisconsin.

“Jamaal got anime popping in the NFL,” Jones said. “I feel like there were anime fans, but nobody just came out the way Jamaal did. And now you see everybody all anime fans, all watching anime.”

The full interview touches on everything from whether or not the Badger State has good buffalo wings (spoiler: nope) to…

Aidan Hutchinson and Brian Branch are channeling their rookie snubs into QB destruction

Hutchinson fell to No. 2 at the draft. Branch hardly got any rookie of the year votes. And now these slights are fuel to their fire.

Aidan Hutchinson slipped to the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Brian Branch garnered only six third-place votes when it came to defensive rookie of the year ballots this winter.

This lack of recognition did nothing to dim their play for an ascendant Detroit Lions team. Slipping in the draft left Hutchinson to remain in his home state as the alpha dog amidst the Lions pass rush. Branch was the jack-of-all-trades head coach Dan Campbell needed in his secondary, bringing value as a wide-ranging safety against the pass and a downhill missile against the run.

In fact, they’re letting this lack of respect fuel them.

“Falling to No. 2 ended up becoming the biggest blessing that’s ever came to me,” Hutchinson said. “I try to look at any adverse moments or any times where you feel like you get the short end of the stick — I try to look for the bigger picture.”

You can catch the entire interview, ranging from the virtues of Detroit-style pizza — a style Branch still hasn’t tried! — to what each learned from national title-winning college coaches to how defenders adjust to pre-snap motion from the line of scrimmage and deep in the secondary alike, below:

Bills DBs Damar Hamlin and Dane Jackson compare city cuisines: Pittsburgh vs. Buffalo

Which city has better food: Buffalo or Pittsburgh?

In the week leading up to the 2024 Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, For The Win caught up with Buffalo Bills defensive backs Damar Hamlin and Dane Jackson to cover a wide variety of topics ahead of the big game.

The Pennsylvania natives and former Pittsburgh Panthers shared what they love about the Steel City’s cuisine and how it compares with Buffalo food — Hamlin really wants to give our Christian D’Andrea a tour of Pittsburgh — and their favorite bars.

“See, man, you gotta come to Pittsburgh and come get a scenery of food from us,” Hamlin said.

“For real, for real,” Jackson added.

“You gotta come get the real Pittsburgh, not the touristy [Pittsburgh],” Hamlin continued.

Hamlin said it’s a tie for him between Buffalo and Pittsburgh food, but he later changed his mind to Pittsburgh, admitting he hasn’t tried a lot of places in Buffalo. Jackson went with Pittsburgh too but noted that Buffalo has many hidden gems that “will fulfill all your tastebuds for sure.”

On the field, they broke down their defensive strategies for not letting players create space and get open, as well as how they mask their own schemes.

“It’s just all about executing the call that you’ve been running all week in practice,” Hamlin said. “However we decide to play it out this week — it may be different than [last] week, it may be the same. We might just be set on our rules because this is what works for us, you know what I mean?

“So it all depends, you know what I mean? But as long as the defense is all on the same page, you’ve got a chance to win every play. It only really gets ugly when you start to bust coverages, and you don’t know what to anticipate.”

Steelers RB Najee Harris says he wants to be an All Elite Wrestling world champion someday

For The Win caught up with Steelers RBs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren before the Super Bowl.

Ahead of the 2024 Super Bowl when the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas, For The Win caught up with Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren to discuss a wide variety of topics.

Among them included the time Harris was at an All Elite Wrestling event and maybe found his next career. Back in the 2022 offseason, he attended an AEW event in Pittsburgh and was part of professional wrestler Britt Baker’s entrance, along with tight end Pat Freiermuth.

After Baker won her match and was trash-talking, Harris and Freiermuth joined her in the ring, ESPN reported at the time. When Baker was done, Harris grabbed the mic, which organizers quickly turned off before a commercial break.

“That was smart on their part because I was going to say some stuff,” Harris told For The Win this week. “I was gonna say, ‘Y’all gonna see me in one of these things. I’m gonna be world champion one day of AEW.'”

Harris and Warren also briefly touched on new Steelers offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, who Warren described as the “perfect” fit for Pittsburgh’s offense because he heard Smith likes to run the ball. They also named Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott and Atlanta Falcons’ Desmond Ridder as the most unfairly hated quarterbacks in the NFL this year, and they ranked their top running back duos in the league.

Bengals WRs Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on why the Bears should trade the No. 1 NFL Draft pick

Chicago has the No. 1 NFL Draft pick for 2024, but should they keep or trade it?

While the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs were preparing to face off in the 2024 Super Bowl in Las Vegas, For The Win caught up with Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. And we covered a wide variety of topics with the two stars.

After Chase made a light pitch for Higgins to stay with the Bengals in free agency, the pair discussed Cincinnati’s coaching staff, how they strategize against defensive backs and sell moves to fake them out, rookie running back Chase Brown’s development and more.

The pair also shared their thoughts on the most unfairly hated NFL quarterback, and they agreed it was Tampa Bay Buccaneers passer Baker Mayfield.

“He had a lot of haters the past two seasons, and he came out this year and did his thing, so I would definitely say Baker,” Higgins said.

“That was it right there,” Chase said in agreement.

They also agreed that the Chicago Bears should trade away the 2024 No. 1 NFL Draft pick and try to build a team around quarterback Justin Fields.

“Justin Fields — he’s a really good quarterback,” Higgins said. “Not saying they would go quarterback with the first pick, but I think they could trade it away and get more picks and go about it that way.”

“That’s probably smart too,” Chase agreed.

“I feel like they should build around him,” Higgins said.

“Yeah, give him some weapons,” Chase added.

Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski praise new Patriots coach Jerod Mayo: ‘He knew everything about everything’

Jerod Mayo may not have a lot of experience, but his former teammates detailed what he brings to the table in Foxborough.

The New England Patriots are about to embark on a new era in Foxborough.

After 24 seasons, 30 postseason wins and six Super Bowl titles, legendary head coach Bill Belichick and the franchise mutually agreed to part ways. New England moved quickly to name his successor, promoting inside linebackers coach and longtime former Patriots player Jerod Mayo.

It’s a big step up for Mayo, who is a relatively unknown name in the coaching ranks. After an eight-year NFL career, all of which was spent in New England, he began coaching inside linebackers for the team in 2019.

While Mayo, who is 37 years old, is fairly inexperienced, he got a ringing endorsement from a pair of his former teammates. Reflecting on playing with Mayo while in Las Vegas ahead of the 2024 Super Bowl with For The Win, Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski had glowing things to say about Mayo, particularly his intelligence.

“Anytime you talk to Mayo, he was like one of the smartest guys talking. He knew everything about everything,” Edelman said. “Very relatable with guys, even though he was a captain… he made everyone feel comfortable. So I’m really excited for his opportunity coming along.”

Gronkowski concurred, praising his understanding of the game of football and ability to make adjustments on the fly.

“He’s very intellectual. The guy knows the game of football to the T,” Gronkowski said. “I remember playing versus him, and he’d make some mess-up on the field, but he knows how to make that adjustment just like that. And he was the captain of the defense, and every time I put my hand down, he was getting all the guys in place around him… because he knows what he’s doing, and he knows the game of football well.”

Edelman also called Mayo a “baller” on the field, while Gronkowski said he was “a beast” prior to dealing with injuries, which ultimately cut his career short in 2015.

Mayo has big shoes to fill, but based on his former teammates’ characterization, it’s clear New England landed a coach who embodies the attention to detail that led to one of the greatest dynasties the sport has ever seen under Belichick.

Golf instruction: Early extension is killing your golf swing

Early extension can be the silent killer of potential great golf shots.

Extension is desired in the golf swing, but early extension can be the silent killer of potential great golf shots.

Jets LB Quincy Williams explained why Brock Purdy is the NFL’s most unfairly criticized QB

He makes a good point.

When the San Francisco 49ers take the field on Sunday for Super Bowl 58 on Sunday in Las Vegas, they’ll be doing so with the first Mr. Irrelevant to ever start at quarterback in a Super Bowl. And with that, many still haven’t gotten on board with Brock Purdy as a legitimate star quarterback.

Purdy has undeniably heard the criticism of his performance this season despite spending months in the MVP race and leading the Niners to the NFC’s top seed.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

But that criticism isn’t echoed by one of the league’s best linebackers in Jets All-Pro Quincy Williams.

For The Win caught up with Williams at Radio Row in Las Vegas alongside running back Breece Hall (Purdy’s former Iowa State teammate) and explained why Purdy has been so unfairly criticized.

Williams said:

“Listen, the dude we’re gonna see on Sunday for the 49ers, man, I don’t care what y’all say: He’s clutch. He’s clutch. For real, though. I’ve seen quarterbacks with weapons around them that didn’t know how to use them. But you got a quarterback who — quote, unquote — everybody be like, ‘He’s average, he’s a game manager.’ But he’s getting the job done.”

It’s tough to argue those results.

Andrew Whitworth explained how he inadvertently became an NFL fashion icon

Andrew Whitworth has wholeheartedly embraced making fashion statements.

A Hall of Fame-caliber offensive tackle, Andrew Whitworth didn’t take long to get comfortable trading in his shoulder pads for a microphone. The former Cincinnati Bengal and Los Angeles Ram blindside protector has been a welcome mainstay on the Thursday Night Football studio panel for the last two seasons.

If you’ve ever enjoyed seeing Whitworth talk NFL football live, you’ll note how he usually dons some kind of hoodie with a blazer draped over the top. It’s a somewhat unconventional look that has, for some people, turned him into a professional football fashion icon.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

And he didn’t even know this would happen.

In an interview with For The Win’s Christian D’Andrea at the 2024 Super Bowl Radio Row, Whitworth happily explained how his hoodie and blazer look came to be. Christian, of course, had to match him:

Whitworth was candid, clarifying that he didn’t know people would care about what we wore until he started regularly appearing on television in street clothes.

“I never knew people cared that much about what you were wearing,” Whitworth said. “I always laugh that on different social media platforms, you’ll get feedback. One person hates it, one person loves it, but the majority is love. But you never knew people cared that much about what you were wearing.”

As for how the hoodie and blazer look was born, Whitworth said he accidentally threw it together.

“It just kind of was a last-second decision [the hoodie and blazer]. I was gonna rock a hoodie the first time we went on air, and it’s been awesome. It’s kind of created some good energy, some good vibes when I walk in a place. People are proud.”

And yes, in case you were wondering, Whitworth really does have hundreds of different hoodies in his clothing arsenal to keep things fresh. (It’s still a lot, but probably not really!)

“For me, this is just my closet. Every week I get someone like, ‘Man, I wonder if Whitworth has 200 hoodies in his closet.’ Yes, I actually do have 200 hoodies in my closet. All different textures, styles, colors, you name it. I have a hoodie for everything.”
