Texas to host first two rounds of the women’s NCAA tourney.

While the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Vic Schaefer and the women’s team is a No. 2 seed in their bracket.

The Big 12 Tournament Champions will get to play the first two rounds at home in Austin, Texas. The Frank Erwin Center will host at least one more game for the home team.

Texas will tip off the tournament with the No. 15 Fairfield in the first round. Should they win that game, which they will be heavily favored, the Longhorns will face off with the winner of Utah (7) and Arkansas (10) game.

The other half of the Big 12 title game, Baylor, also is a No. 2 seed in the Wichita Region. The Longhorns could see an old nemesis in the Sweet 16 with Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers earning the No. 3 Seed.

WATCH: Texas coach Vic Schaefer hopes to see ten thousand fans for senior night

Vic Schaefer is calling for more fans to support his team.

Texas women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer has been very adamant about improving fan attendance at games. Saturday’s matchup against Oklahoma State will be the final regular-season game of the year as well as senior night for the Horns.

Schaefer made a deal with the Longhorn community that he will donate $10,000 to the Neighborhood Longhorns Progam if at least 10,000 fans attend Saturday’s game.

The Longhorns are having a fanatic season with a record of 22-6, ranked No. 9 in the nation. Schaefer believes his squad deserves more dedication from the fan base. Texas ranks outside the top 30 in overall attendance.

Saturday’s game will also be the last regular season basketball game at the Frank Erwin Center. Both the men’s and women’s basketball programs will move over to the new Moody Center for the 2022-23 season.

Texas one of 11 schools ranked in both men’s and women’s basketball

Chris Beard and Vic Schaefer have their squad’s in the Top 25.

Basketball at the University of Texas is headed in the right direction under men’s coach Chris Beard and women’s coach Vic Schaefer.

Texas is one of only 11 schools that are ranked inside the Top 25 in both men’s and women’s basketball.

Chris Beard has his team 9-2 and ranked No. 17 in the nation in his first season as the Longhorns head coach. Beard was able to give the program a shot in the arm over the offseason with the acquisition of many high profile transfers.

On the women’s side, Vic Schaefer has been nothing short of phenomenal in his second season in Austin. After revamping a roster that reached the Elite Eight a season ago, Schaefer’s squad has the look of a national championship contender yet again. Texas is 9-1 with notable wins over Stanford and Texas A&M.

The excitement around the basketball programs on the 40 acres is extremely high.

Texas women’s basketball upsets No. 3 Stanford 61-56

Vic Schaefer’s squad made a statement on Sunday.

Vic Schaefer’s squad made a statement on Sunday. No. 25 Texas defeated No. 3 Stanford 61-56 behind a dominant fourth-quarter effort. The Horns outscored the Cardinal 26-16 to cap off the comeback.

Stanford is the defending national champion and owned the nation’s second-longest winning streak at 21 games.

The teams entered halftime dead even at 35 apiece. Stanford looked like they were starting to pull away late in the third quarter, Lexie Hull made a clutch three to put the Cardinal up five points going into the fourth.

Texas needed a spark on offense and junior Aliyah Matharu gave it to them. Matharu took over the game scoring 17 points in the fourth, shooting 4-4 from beyond the arc. When Texas needed someone to step up, Matharu was phenomenal.

Freshman guard Rori Harmon also had a great day scoring 21 points on 50 percent shooting. Harmon also hit two pivotal free throws down the stretch to help Texas leave Palo Alto with the upset.

Vic Schaefer is capitalizing off the momentum from their elite-eight run last season. Expect the Horns to take a massive leap in the next AP Top 25 poll.
