Sarah Fuller added to Vanderbilt roster, travels with team to Missouri

Sarah Fuller made the trip to Missouri with Vanderbilt and will dress for the game with the Tigers

The Vanderbilt football roster has a pair of No 32s on it. People won’t be as interested in fifth-year senior running back Jamauri Wakefield as they will the other player with those digits Saturday when the Commodores face Missouri in Columbia.

Vanderbilt officially added Sarah Fuller to its roster on Friday, The 6-foot-2 senior, a potential kicker, made the trip in anticipation of becoming the first woman to take part in a Power 5 football game.

Other Nashville teams have taken notice and wished the soccer goalkeeper, well.

Fuller started nine of the 12 games Vanderbilt women’s soccer played during the fall 2020 season. She recorded three shutouts, and the team went 7-2 with her in the net.

Fuller plans to continue her soccer career and education at North Texas. She is from Wylie, Tx.

“I am happy for her,” UNT soccer coach John Hedlund said. “She’s a great athlete with a strong leg. It doesn’t surprise me the football team is interested in her.

“I will probably watch and cheer her on.”

ESPN noted other women who have made appearances in college football games.

Ashley Martin became the first woman to score at the Division I level when she kicked three extra points for FCS Jacksonville State against Cumberland on Aug. 30, 2001.

Two years later, New Mexico’s Katie Hnida became the first woman to score at the FBS level with two extra points against Texas State.

Sarah Fuller expected to make history, kick for Vanderbilt against Missouri

Goalkeeper Sarah Fuller will kick for Vanderbilt against Missouri in an SEC football game

Vanderbilt will make Power 5 Conference college football history on Saturday against Missouri as it is expected to have Sarah Fuller kick for the Commodores.

Fuller, a goalkeeper on the SEC-winning team. would become the first female to kick in a Power 5 game.

Off the field Fuller strives to make the world a different place and her resume includes a summer internship with Thistle Farms and End Slavery Nashville. When she straps on her helmet Saturday the back of it will read “Play Like A Girl” to encourage young women to get involved in athletics and to become aware of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics camp scheduled for March in Nashville.

Some background from her biography on the Vandy soccer site:

As a Senior (2020):

  • Started nine of Vanderbilt’s 12 games during the fall 2020 season, posting three clean sheets on the way to a 7-2-0 record in net
  • With an 0.97 goals against average, the number stands as the eighth-best mark in a season in Vanderbilt soccer history
  • Starting all four games during Vanderbilt’s 2020 SEC Tournament championship run, posted a shutout in the second round against Mississippi State (11/15/20) and had an assist in the quarterfinals against No. 13 Tennessee (11/17/20)
  • Made her first career start in goal at home against South Carolina (10/11/20) and tallied six saves
  • Earned her first collegiate win in the 2-1 double-overtime victory at Florida (10/18/20)
  • Kept a clean sheet in Vanderbilt’s 1-0 victory over No. 15 Georgia (10/25/20)
  • Earned a second consecutive clean sheet in the 2-0 victory at LSU (10/30/20)
  • Had a shutout streak of 314:34 during the regular season stretching from Oct. 18 at Florida to Nov. 7 against Ole Miss

Fuller is an exceptional student, too. Her major is Medicine, Health and Society

Vanderbilt mulls using goalkeeper Sarah Fuller as its kicker

Might Sarah Fuller kick for Vanderbilt against Missouri or in another SEC game?

The Vanderbilt-Missouri SEC contest wouldn’t normally attract much attention this late in the season. However, the Commodores’ possible choice of a placekicker makes the game intriguing.

Faced with COVID-19 issues throughout its roster, 0-7 Vanderbilt is considering having Sarah Fuller kick against the Tigers. Fuller was the goalkeeper on the Vanderbilt team that won the SEC title last weekend,

“Right now, we’re just looking at all options,” coach Derek Mason said on ESPN 102.5 The Game. “For us, talking to Sarah, she’s a champ, and no pun intended. Just coming off an SEC Championship in soccer… She’s a complete competitor. She’s an option for us. Right now, that’s where we sit.”

Fuller would become the first female to kick in a Power 5 game if Mason calls upon her.

The school newspaper added to the intrigue.

The Hustler that Fuller was wearing full pads and a uniform but did not take any kicks. Instead, she went through walk-throughs with coaches and at least one specialist on the sidelines, multiple sources say.

Fuller appeared in nine games and made 28 saves for the Commodores, who finished 8-4 last season. She had three saves last weekend as Vanderbilt upset top-seeded Arkansas 3-1 to capture the SEC tournament title.

WATCH: Trevon Grimes goes up to make go-ahead touchdown grab

Florida Gators wide receiver Trevon Grimes went up high for the grab in double coverage to give the Florida Gators a one-touchdown lead.

Florida’s game against Vanderbilt isn’t going how the UF faithful may have hoped for, but it was able to get a boost right before the locker room, thanks to receiver Trevon Grimes.

Grimes went up in the air to snag a ball from quarterback Kyle Trask in two-on-one coverage, capping off a seven-play, 85-yard drive.

The officials took a second look at the play, as it appeared the ball moved once it hit the ground. But there wasn’t a clear camera angle showing what happened, and the call on the field of a touchdown stood.

That 34-yard grab was Grimes’ first catch of the day. The touchdown — Trask’s second of the day — put him at 14 of 19 for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

The Gators are struggling to get past the Commodores right now, especially defensively, but with Grimes’ score, they managed to take a 17-10 lead to the locker room.

Five halftime notes: Gators lead at the half but Vandy put up a fight

Florida Gators football faces the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road and after the first half hold a 17-10 lead. Here are five reasons why.

The opening half of the football game between the Florida Gators and the Vanderbilt Commodores did not go quite how UF fans expected, with Vandy leading the game at the end of the first quarter, 10-7, despite Kyle Trask setting a new SEC record with his touchdown throw.

In the second quarter, the two teams traded a pair of punts before Florida’s offense started to click. The Gators tied the game on a field goal with under four minutes left, then took the lead on a fantastic catch by Trevon Grimes to give them a 17-10 lead heading into the halftime locker room.

Now that the first half is complete, let us look at the five major points from the opening thirty minutes.

Kyle Trask’s first TD of the Vandy game sets new SEC record

The Florida Gators answered an opening touchdown with their own on the arm of Kyle Trask, who set a new record for TD passes in SEC games.

Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask set a new Southeastern Conference record for touchdowns in conference games on a throw to Kadarius Toney for his 29th of the season.

Trask went 4-for-6 passing on the first drive for UF, marching 71 yards downfield for the score averaging 11.8 yards per reception. The touchdown and point after tied the game up 7-7 after Ken Seals took his team to the endzone on the opening possession of the game.

Coming into the game, Trask has been on fire six games into his redshirt senior season, amassing 2,171 yards on 148-for-211 passing with 28 touchdowns and just three interceptions. His passing percentage of 70.1 percent and completion average of 10.3 yards per reception are next-level numbers that have separated him from the pack as one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

Trask looks to continue this trend and has started out well so far today. Hopefully he will continue his hot streak and lead the Gators to an easy win.

Not-so-bold predictions for Florida’s showdown with Vanderbilt

Florida Gators come in heavy favorites against one of the worst teams in the Power Five Vanderbilt Commodores. We predict a big win for UF.

Last year, this game wasn’t close at all. Facing off against Vanderbilt at home, Florida earned a 56-0 win over the Commodores. This year’s game, featuring a Gators team that has beaten Georgia and appears to be on its way to Atlanta, has the makings of a similar matchup.

Vandy enters this one 0-6, easily the worst team in the SEC and perhaps in all of the Power Five. Both its offense and defense rank near the bottom of the conference, and it’s suffered big losses to lower-tier league teams like Ole Miss, LSU and South Carolina.

It’s hard to believe the Commodores will be able to beat a team like Florida, which boasts one of the best offenses in college football. Led by quarterback Kyle Trask, likely to be at the very least a Heisman finalist, the Gators are averaging almost 46 points per game.

Trask has 28 passing touchdowns to three interceptions this season, and he should be able to do to Vandy what lesser quarterbacks have so far this season.

Facing a Commodores team that doesn’t do much of anything too well on either side of the football, this one should be out of hand by halftime, and fans should get an extended look at backup quarterback Emory Jones and other less experienced players on the roster.

Florida wins another blowout and is one step closer to clinching an SEC East title when the dust settles on Saturday.

Prediction: Florida 55, Vanderbilt 3

Take a look at the pregame hype around the Gator Nation at Vanderbilt

Florida Gators football fans are getting excited about today’s game against Vanderbilt, here’s a look at some of the reaction from Twitter.

Another autumn Saturday, another Florida Gators game, and today’s matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores should be a fun one for the Gator Nation as their team comes in white-hot on offense while Vandy has struggled to get anything going this season.

Kyle Trask is among the nation’s best quarterbacks and his efforts have not gone unnoticed this year. The redshirt senior has been setting records playing through a most unconventional schedule and looks to put some more crooked numbers up on the board today.

As game time nears, the team and fan base begins to get riled up on social media behind the banner of Florida’s many various Twitter accounts; along with the hashtag #GoGators the Rowdy Reptiles can make their voice be heard as we all join together for our fall tradition.

Here is a look at some of the tweets over the past 24 hours as the excitement builds in a crescendo to the opening kickoff.

Here’s everything you need to know to follow Florida at Vanderbilt

Fans of the Florida Gators and Vanderbilt Commodores can follow the football action on television, radio and live stream over the internet.

It is almost time for the Florida Gators to face the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, Tenn., in a matchup between two SEC East Division foes who are currently on opposite ends of the win column.

Vandy comes into the game winless in six tries, earning them a spot in the division cellar, while the Gators sit atop the East with just one loss against the Texas A&M Aggies. Give the way Florida’s offense has been humming along this year on the arm of Heisman Trophy hopeful Kyle Trask, this game will likely end up as lopsided as the matchup looks on paper going in.

Nonetheless, Gators football is Gators football, and given the noon EST start time, fans should be able to easily follow along — and here is how they can. The game will be broadcast on ESPN or streamed from the ESPN app and can also be heard on the Gator IMG Sports Network.

BetMGM oddsmakers hold steady from the past couple of days, with the Gators a 31.5-point favorite heading up to game time, while the over/under also remains at 67.5.

The game will kick off at 12 p.m. EST in Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, Tenn. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, can be live-streamed on the ESPN app and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.
