How Josh Heupel’s coaching tree has fared against Alabama in 2022

A look at how Josh Heupel’s coaching tree has fared against Alabama in 2022.

No. 8 Tennessee (5-0, 2-0 SEC) will host No. 1 Alabama (6-0, 3-0 SEC) Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Week 7.

Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT. CBS will televise the Southeastern Conference matchup.

The matchup will be Josh Heupel’s second against the Crimson Tide as Tennessee’s head coach.

Heupel served as UCF’s head coach from 2018-20 before being in the same capacity with the Vols.

Anthony Tucker served as running backs coach (2018-20) under Heupel at UCF. Tucker also served as passing game coordinator (2019) and co-offensive coordinator (2020) under Heupel with the Knights.

Tucker serves as Utah State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022. Alabama defeated Utah State, 55-0, in Week 1 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Following Alabama’s win against Utah State, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban discussed playing the Aggies and the challenges they present. Utah State runs offensive uptempo, wide splits and is attacking like Heupel.

“I was really pleased with the way the players approached this game,” Saban said. “I thought we had good energy. I thought we had good intensity. We had good preparation throughout the week. They’re sort of challenging with some of the things that they do.

“No disrespect to Utah State, their players played hard, they have a good team. We’re going to play teams that are much more physical, aggressive and talented than what they are, so we are going to have to do things correctly and it is going to be important for guys to understand that.”

Below are Utah State’s statistics against Alabama in Week 1.

How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-BYU: Cougars side

Some folks aren’t happy with this outcome (big shock).

BYU entered its contest against Notre Dame as a ranked team. However, it didn’t enter with the best momentum after it had trouble beating a struggling Utah State the week before. Fans took notice of that and wondered if it was an omen for when the Cougars played the Irish. It turned that were kind of right as the Cougars lost, 28-20.

Cougars fans shouldn’t feel too bad as the Irish have yet to lose a Shamrock Series game, and their team just happened to be the opponent this year. Still, that fact has to be of little consolation for them. This has been one of the best programs in the country to this point, and it’s worth wondering how much longer they’ll be ranked, if at all. In any case, Cougars fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, and it probably hurts even more given how close their team was to completing a comeback:

Air Force vs Utah State Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

Can Utah State stop the run? No? Okay, good luck with that.

The Aggies actually did a good job holding down BYU’s ground attack in a 38-26 loss last week, and they kept UNLV from going off, but Alabama, UConn, Weber State all had a good time running.

Air Force leads the nation in rushing by over a 100 more yards per game than No. 3 Kansas State and by 62 more yards than No. 2 Army. By its own standards it had an impossible time getting going in the 13-10 win over Navy, but it did enough to get out alive.

Now the attack should start to roll again, Utah State – along with the issues against the run – is getting hit with too many flags, it’s not forcing turnovers, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Utah State Will Win

Is it possible that teams are starting to figure out Air Force’s fastball?

Some outside pieces were missing against Wyoming, but the Falcons couldn’t get going in Laramie and everything looked like it was running in mud against Navy.

Granted, in between was a monster performance against Navy, but again, Utah State hasn’t been that bad at keeping the big runs to a minimum lately.

The wins might not be there, but the offense hasn’t been bad over the last few games, it’s been versatile enough to keep things interesting, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Utah State hasn’t been playing poorly, but the 13 turnovers over the last three games have been an absolute killer. Interceptions are the problem, but a few fumbles have been sprinkled in, too, for the nation leader in giveaways..

It doesn’t help that the Aggie defense hasn’t taken the ball aways in the last two games.

Air Force will go Air Force. It’ll hang on to the ball for 40 minutes, it’ll control the game, and it’ll run for close to 400 yards.

BYU fans tweet thoughts during team’s last game before Notre Dame

Cougars fans aren’t happy.

With BYU ranked and Notre Dame not, the Cougars should be the favorites for the Shamrock Series game in Las Vegas, right? Well, Cougars fans are starting to have doubts after their team had to battle to beat struggling Utah State, 38-26, at home Thursday night. Sure, they’ll take a 4-1 record as fans of any team would. However, more than a few are pessimistic about their team’s chances against the Irish if it plays like it did against the Aggies.

Though the Cougars never trailed after the second quarter, they didn’t hold a double-digit lead until the third. Unimpressive play was enough for fans to take to Twitter and say their team is in big trouble when it faces the Irish. Then again, the Irish haven’t exactly done a lot to convince people that they can just walk into any game and turn it into a romp. Nevertheless, Cougars fans are worried, and here are a few of them saying such:

BYU vs Utah State Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

This is one of those games.

It’s not necessarily a “throw out the records” type of game, but Utah State always tries to bring a little something extra when it gets to deal with the guys from Provo.

It’s been a wee bit of a rough run over the last few weeks – to be nice about it – but there’s enough of a passing game to at least press the Cougar secondary a bit.

The defensive front doesn’t generate a pass rush, but it gets behind the line, the takeaways were there with seven before not getting any in last week’s loss to UNLV, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why BYU Will Win

Yeah, Utah State is having problems.

It starts with the turnovers. The offense has to press with all the problems it’s having getting anything going, and the mistakes follow from there.

The positive: there weren’t any turnovers against Alabama. The negative: there were 12 in the other three games including ten over the last two games.

BYU isn’t taking the ball away, but this is the game to start generating more big things.

The Cougar lines should take over right away, the defense should stuff everything the Aggies want to do on the ground, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State’s secondary is about to get hit hard.

It wasn’t totally awful against Alabama, and it hasn’t been a disaster, but QB Jaren Hall and the BYU passing game have been rolling no matter who’s out there are receiver.

The offense is averaging close to 300 yards per game through the air with ten scores. Utah State has yet to allow anyone to hit 70%. That’s about to change.

UNLV vs Utah State Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

Is UNLV … good?

It pushed Cal way too hard, and then it ripped up North Texas 58-27 with a great day from the ground game to put the dream of a bowl game on the table.

All of a sudden, the Rebel pass rush is great, there aren’t the big mistakes there’ve been in the past – just one turnover so far – and the defensive front is holding up just fine.

Utah State can’t keep the chains moving, the passing game isn’t doing enough, and it can’t close out drives with points scoring just 43% of the time in the red zone.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Utah State Will Win

The Aggies are having a slew of issues, but the line is coming up with plenty of tackles for loss and they’re not having too many problems with turnovers – the D is keeping things neutral.

UNLV might not be screwing up, but there are a few too many penalty yards – it’s getting hit with the big kind for lots of yards per flag – and defensively it has to hold up against the pass a bit more.

North Texas and Cal were each able to throw well – Cal connected on the midrange throws and UNT bombed away – and Utah State could use the help.

The Aggies threw against UConn in the season opening win, forget about the Alabama game, and nothing worked in the loss to Weber State.

With two weeks off, there’s been time to work out the kinks.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State will be better offensively than it’s been ver the last few games, but the defense won’t be able to help the cause.

The run defense will give up over 200 yards, UNLV will do a good job of limiting the mistakes, and one of the rising stories in college football will continue.

The Rebel defensive front will be good enough when it has to.

Utah State vs Weber State Game Preview

Why Weber State Will Win

Weber State had one of the better defenses in the FCS last year, and it’s going to be a killer this year. too. It all started out with a 41-5 win over Western Oregon, allowing just 132 yards of total offense with just three yards on the ground.

There were too many penalties, and the offense wasn’t always smooth, but there weren’t any issues after getting up fast. Now the Wildcats get a Utah State team that struggled a bit against a bad UConn team to start the season and got destroyed by a great Alabama team last week.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Utah State Will Win

As long as the Utah State offense is balanced and can get the ground game going like did against UConn, it’ll be fine.

The Alabama game was an outlier – that team will go 55-0 on most teams. The Aggies have enough talent on the offensive side to keep the mistakes to a minimum and keep the chains moving, and the defense shouldn’t have too many problems against a Weber State running game that doesn’t do much.

It’s about the defense. Utah State can’t turn the ball over – it only gave up two so far and the team is +2 overall. As long as there aren’t a slew of mistakes, all will be fine.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Watch out.

Weber State is going to be cranked up to make a big statement, and it has the playmakers on defense to do it. However, the Utah State offense will be steady, it won’t screw up that much, and it’ll overcome a rocky day from the run defense to get out alive.

Weber State will have its chances, but it’ll come up with late misfires. Utah State will tack on a few scores to pull away.

Nick Saban details what the biggest issue on his team has been

Nick Saban was not happy after the 55-0 shutout win over Utah State…

Alabama head coach Nick Saban met with members of the media following a 55-0 shutout win over Utah State in the Crimson Tide’s season-opening matchup at home. With such an impressive win, one would expect the coach of the top-ranked team in the nation to be happy. Well, not Saban.

Saban got frustrated with media members when talking about the depth chart for the Week 1 contest that was released a few days before the actual game.

“My biggest issue on our whole team was the day the depth chart came out,” said Saban.

He mentioned that it may be the last one the program releases to the public and media because of the issues it caused.

Saban made it clear that there is ongoing competition at nearly every single position. Analyzing who is where on the depth chart likely gets back to players, which leads to the issues he mentioned.

He finished by stating, “I know y’all think I’m crazy. That doesn’t bother me at all.”

Relive the top moments from Alabama’s monster Week 1 win over Utah State!

After demolishing the Utah State Aggies in the season opener at Bryant Denny Stadium, Alabama Football now looks ahead to its Week 2 matchup against the Texas Longhorns.

Crimson Tide fans got a taste of what this 2022 squad is capable of but didn’t get to see it in full. The game got out of hand quickly, and starters were pulled to preserve their health and to give others an opportunity to gain some valuable in-game experience.

The Alabama offense appeared to be as dominant as ever, even with all the new additions to the starting lineup, and the defense stood strong, as it didn’t even let Utah State get close enough to attempt a field goal.

Here are the top moments from the Week 1 contest, as seen from the sidelines.

Box Score Breakdown: Alabama stars shine in season-opening game against Utah State

The stats from Alabama’s Week 1 win over Utah State show the impact players of the game!

The 2022 Alabama Football season is officially underway. The Crimson Tide walk away from the season-opening Week 1 contest against Utah State victorious.

The game got out of hand fast and a lot of different players saw the field, including true freshmen and other players that may not be atop the team’s depth chart.

As expected, quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson had headline-worthy performances. Others may have only reeled in a single catch or assisted on one tackle, but they deserve their credit too.

With all four quarters against Utah State in the books, here are the stats from the final box score from Alabama’s Week 1 game.
