Dalton Knecht earns national, conference weekly honors

Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht earns national and conference weekly honors.

Tennessee guard Dalton Knecht was named a United States Basketball Writers Association Oscar Robertson Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The USBWA honors five players with the award every week of the college basketball season. Knecht was honored along with Lindenwood’s Keenon Cole, Omaha’s Frankie Fidler, New Orleans’ Jordan Johnson and Washington State’s Isaac Jones.

Knecht was also named Fox Sports National Guard of the Week and SEC Co-Player of the Week. He shared SEC weekly honors with Alabama’s Mark Sears.

Mikaylah Williams earns conference, national Freshman of the Week honors

Mikaylah Williams averaged 20.0 points 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in two wins last week.

While a lot of the offseason hype surrounding LSU’s women’s basketball team had to do with the transfer pickups and the return of [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] has been one of the most impactful additions.

The No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class, Williams has had a tremendous true freshman season, and after a big week with impressive performances in blowout wins over McNeese and Northwestern State, she’s been named both the national (USBWA) and SEC Freshman of the Week.

In LSU’s two wins this past week, Williams averaged 20.0 points 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals. She also ranks fifth in scoring among freshmen nationally.

Despite being on a team loaded with experienced talent, Williams has proven to be a major contributor for the Tigers this season and could be a major factor for this squad come March.

Jalen Pickett named USBWA All-American

Jalen Pickett is the first player to ever be named an All-American by the USBWA.

A day before Penn State is set to play in its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament game since 2011, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] has added another all-American honor to his name. On Wednesday, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association revealed its all-American teams for the 2022-23 season, and Pickett was included on the third team.

In being named to the USBWA All-American list, Pickett becomes the first player in Penn State program history to receive all-American honors from the basketball writers association. On top of making al-American history for the Nittany Lions, Pickett was named the District II Player of the Year.

Pickett was behind first-team guard Marcus Sasser of Houston and second-team guards Jaime Jaquez Jr. of UCLA and Tyler Kolek of Marquette on the USBWA all-American voting. He was one of two guards on the third team, with Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell also appearing on the third team roster.

A pair of Big Ten players, Purdue’s Zach Edey and Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis, landed on the first team from the USBWA. Pickett was joined on the USBWA third team by Iowa forward Kris Murray as the only other Big Ten players to be honored by the USBWA along. The Big Ten had the most USBWA all-Americans among all conferences with four.

Pickett was previously named a second-team All-American by Sporting News.

Pickett will lead Penn State into its first NCAA Tournament since 2011 when the Nittany Lions face Texas A&M in the first round on Thursday night. Penn State has not won a game in the NCAA Tournament since 2001.

INDIANAPOLIS — PJ Hall (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District team, announced by the USBWA national membership today.

Hall earned All-ACC Honorable Mention this season and finished second in the ACC’s Most Improved Player voting.

The sophomore finished +11.9 in points, +3.7 in rebounds, +1.4 in assists and +1.0 in blocks per game. He held a streak during the season of 25 consecutive double-digit scoring games, which ended when he hurt his foot in the opening minute at Louisville (Feb. 19). Hall continued his double-digit scoring upon return in three-straight games to finish the season.

Hall produced four double-doubles during the season, including a then-career-high-tying 22 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in a 90-80 win over Drake (Dec. 11). Hall topped his scoring output and collected a career-high 28 points in a loss at Florida State (Feb. 15).

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING…
HEAD COACH BRAD BROWNELL
“I’ve been very demanding of PJ; in practice and in games because I think he can be great. And I’ve talked to him about it and he wants to be great. I’m so proud of the way he is fighting, he doesn’t give in for his team.” – Brad Brownell (Jan. 22)

DUKE HEAD COACH MIKE KRZYZEWSKI
“(PJ) Hall is the most improved player on the planet. He played nine minutes a game last year and he’s one of the better big guys in the country; he’s a pro, really. He can shoot, go out and [he’s] mobile.” – Mike Krzyzewski (Jan. 25)

NORTH CAROLINA HEAD COACH HUBERT DAVIS
“He’s [PJ Hall] a guy that plays with a lot of emotion. He’s competitive. He’s very physical and plays hard on both ends of the floor on every possession. He’s a guy that can consistently score around the basket, but he can shoot the ball from the outside. On both ends, he’s a player that could be a huge factor.” – Hubert Davis (Feb. 8)

LOUISVILLE INTERIM HEAD COACH MIKE PEGUES
“He’s an animal. He’s one of the best bigs in the league [ACC].” – Mike Pegues (Feb. 18)
