Penn State moves into USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll saw a bunch of changes after an eventful weekend. Here is where Penn State is ranked.

Following a wild weekend of college football and after improving to 2-0, Penn State is once again a ranked college football program. The USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was updated Sunday afternoon and Penn State made its 2022 debut in the poll at No. 23.

Penn State benefitted in part to a number of ranked teams taking a loss in Week 2. Notre Dame and Wisconsin each fell out of the coaches poll after suffering home losses to unranked opponents. Penn State also moved ahead of Pittsburgh, with the Panthers tumbling 11 spots to No. 25 after their overtime loss to Tennessee.

Alabama remains on top of the coaches poll this week, although the gap in first-place votes was cut significantly after a close call at Texas on Saturday. Alabama received3 9 first-place votes while Georgia made up ground at No. 2 with 25 first-place votes. No. 3 Ohio State received one first-place vote.

No. 5 Michigan and No. 9 Michigan State are the only other Big Ten teams in the Coaches Poll this week. Notre Dame fell out of the top 25 from No. 8 after a home loss to Marshall. The Irish, now 0-2, are eighth in the others receiving votes category.

Oklahoma Sooners move up in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

After their 30-point win over Kent State, the Oklahoma Sooners moved up a spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners‘ (2-0) two-minute drill at the end of the first half helped them take the lead against Kent State (0-2) when [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] found [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] down the left sideline. That gave the Sooners a 7-3 lead heading into halftime, and Oklahoma never looked back on their way to a 33-3 win over the Golden Flashes.

The Sooners’ win, combined with Texas A&M’s loss to Appalachian State allowed Oklahoma to move up one spot to No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Alabama maintained the top spot with their one-point win over the Texas Longhorns, who moved up from No. 24 to 22 with their efforts. The Georgia Bulldogs remain at No. 2, Ohio State is No. 3, Clemson is No. 4, and Michigan is No. 5 in the latest poll, marking zero changes to the top five from last week.

Oklahoma is one spot ahead of Oklahoma State, who moved up to No. 7 after their win over Arizona State, while Baylor dropped to No. 19 following their 26-20 loss to BYU, who moved up to No. 14.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish experienced the biggest drop, falling from No. 9 to outside the top 25 after their shocking loss to Marshall on Saturday.

The Sooners put their No. 6 ranking to the test as they prepare to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln.

Florida falls in Week 2 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after Kentucky loss

Florida may have lost to Kentucky on Saturday, but the Gators didn’t plummet down the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll as many were expecting.

Florida’s Week 2 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats may have seemed like the end of the world, but the Gators only fell two spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll to No. 21.

Last week, the Associated Press ranked Florida as high as No. 12 in the nation, but the Coaches Poll had him at No. 19 — one spot in front of Kentucky — and that proved to be more accurate. Of course, UK ended up being better than expected and has now shot up to No. 10 following a 2-0 start.

The good news is Florida is still ranked. The bad news is that it’s not anywhere near the top of the conference. Alabama and Georgia remain at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, both in the conference and country. Arkansas is battling Kentucky for the No. 3 spot in the SEC and is ranked just behind them at No. 11 on the Coaches Poll.

Tennessee, Florida’s Week 4 opponent, sits at No. 16 and Ole Miss is No. 17. The Gators are one spot ahead of the Texas A&M Aggies, but they just lost to Appalachian State in a low-scoring affair.

As far as the in-state rivals, Florida State remains on the outside of the top 25 but should be next in if they can keep up the winning streak. Miami is ranked No. 13 and climbing.

LSU still not receiving votes in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The Tigers remain on the outside looking in.

The Tigers sit at 1-1 after earning a 65-17 blowout victory over Southern in coach Brian Kelly’s first game at Tiger Stadium, but they’ll have to do a lot more than that if they want to find themselves in the AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Tigers didn’t receive any votes last week after a 24-23 loss to Florida State in New Orleans to begin the season, and that remains the case after an upset-heavy Week 2. As far as the rest of the SEC goes, Alabama and Georgia remain at No. 1 and 2, respectively, despite the fact that the former barely survived a road trip to Austin on Saturday.

Kentucky jumped 10 spots to No. 10 after a road upset against Florida, which in turn fell two spots to No. 21. Arkansas is up six spots to No. 11 after a comfortable win against South Carolina, Texas A&M fell all the way from No. 6 to No. 22 after a home loss to Appalachian State, and Tennessee’s overtime win over Pittsburgh vaulted it into the rankings at No. 16.

Ole Miss took advantage of the chaos, rising six spots to No. 17 after a blowout win over Central Arkansas.

Where is Ohio State in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll?

Do you agree with where Ohio State is in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll? #GoBucks

What an interesting week it was in college football. There were unexpected close games and upsets during a week that looked somewhat ho-hum. As recent history tells us though, sometimes the weeks that seem less-than-stellar on paper deliver the most upheaval.

It was especially chaotic in the Big Ten where teams like Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa were unassumingly knocked off. With all that happened over the last week, the voters in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches poll no doubt had their work cut out for them.

With all that went upside down, sideways, and off the rails last week, Ohio State still stayed in the same spot, at No.3. The Buckeyes are still behind No. 1 Alabama, and No. 2 Georgia. Don’t shoot the messenger.

The rest of the top ten behind that trio includes Clemson (4), Michigan (5), Oklahoma (6), Oklahoma State (7), USC (8), Michigan State (9), and Kentucky (10).
