Gators still on the outside of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll looking in

Florida received 13 votes but didn’t crack the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after its bye week.

The Gators were idle this week, meaning they didn’t have an opportunity to get back in the pollsters’ good graces after a stunning road loss to LSU as double-digit favorites. Florida fell out of the rankings after that game, and in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, it is still outside the top 25.

UF received 13 votes in this week’s Coaches Poll, tied with Oregon State and behind Louisiana, BYU, Arkansas, Houston, Arizona State and Virginia. Six SEC teams are ranked in this week’s poll: No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 Alabama, No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 12 Kentucky, No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 21 Auburn.

If the Gators wish to return to the top 25, it will likely take a win over the nation’s top team in Jacksonville next weekend. Florida beat Georgia last year, but coach Dan Mullen is just 1-2 against Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart, and this could be his best team yet.

UF will certainly be heavy underdogs in that game, but if it can pull off the upset, it would both spoil the undefeated season for UGA and help right its own ship, at least slightly. If that game doesn’t go in Florida’s favor, it could be a battle to return to the rankings this season.

Here’s the full coaches poll.

Oklahoma falls in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 4 in the latest USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after rallying to beat Kansas, 35-23.

The Oklahoma Sooners are still perfect and sit at 8-0 (5-0 Big 12 Conference) after rallying to top Kansas, 35-23.

However, suffice it to say that performance by OU in Lawrence, Kan., left the pollsters less than impressed. Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Kansas led 10-0 at halftime over Oklahoma which was the Jayhawks’ largest lead over an FBS team this season. Yesterday was KU’s first double-digit lead over OU since 2013.

The Sooners were shutout in the first half for the first time in the Lincoln Riley era and for the first time since the 2014 season. Oklahoma’s FBS-long first-quarter scoring streak was also snapped after 32 consecutive games.

Freshman quarterback Caleb Williams helped engineer the second-half comeback for OU. He threw for 178 yards on 15-of-20 passing attempts with two touchdowns against one interception.

Williams also dazzled with his 40-yard touchdown run where he split would-be Jayhawks tacklers on a 4th-and-3 snap to put OU in front 28-17 at that stage of the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma outscored Kansas 35-13 after halftime.

Still, Oklahoma floundering around for a half opened the door for Cincinnati and Alabama to leapfrog them into the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Georgia remains No. 1 in the USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, while Ohio State rounds out the top five.

OU is joined in the poll by fellow Big 12 Conference members Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State. The Cowboys are next-highest out of the Big 12 at No. 15, the Bears No. 18 and the Cyclones back into the poll at No. 23.

Here is a look at the full coaches poll after this week’s slate of games.

Alabama moves up one spot in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama moves to No. 3 in the Coaches Poll!

Alabama extended their winning streak against Tennessee to 15 games on Saturday night. Bryce Young was the star of the night, throwing for 371 yards and two touchdowns. He was even stellar on the ground, rushing for another two touchdowns.

With the win, Alabama moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Oklahoma took a small dive to No. 4 after a near loss on the road to Kansas. Georgia and Cincinnati are the top two teams.

As for the rest of the SEC, Ole Miss (No. 9) moved into the top 10, while Kentucky (No. 12) moved up a spot on their bye week. Texas A&M (No. 14) and Auburn (No. 21) are the only other conference members ranked.

Penn State drops in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Penn State falls in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Sports Coaches Poll:

Despite the Wisconsin Badgers winning their third straight game against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday afternoon, they were unable to crack the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Although the Badgers did not make it into this week’s poll, there were a few Big Ten teams that moved significantly. Penn State fell nine spots in the latest poll after dropping their second game in a row to the Illinois Fighting Illini in overtime.

There were a few newcomers to the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll top 10 for this week, and it includes Georgia(1), Cincinnati(2), Alabama(3), Oklahoma(4), Ohio State(5), Michigan(6), Michigan State(7), Oregon(8), Mississippi(9) and Iowa(10).

Wisconsin will face off next against the Iowa Hawkeyes at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11:00 a.m. CDT.

Below are the Big Ten teams featured in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Notre Dame moves up in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Notre Dame again moves up in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Notre Dame handled business against Southern Cal last night as the Irish took down the Trojans 31-16, their fourth-straight win in the historic season.  Notre Dame was in control the majority of the night in their first of two-straight night games at Notre Dame Stadium.

The win paired with a few loses from both Penn State and Oklahoma State moved Notre Dame up from 13th a week ago to 11th in the latest edition of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The entire rankings are as follows as No. 2 Cincinnati is Notre Dame’s only 2021 opponent to crack this week’s rankings while Virginia showed up in the receiving votes section.

If Notre Dame can beat North Carolina next week a return to the top-ten would seem likely assuming Cincinnati remains unbeaten and at number-two because No. 6 Michigan and No. 7 Michigan State are set to square off in East Lansing.

Penn State tumbles in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Where is Penn State ranked in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after an epic overtime loss to Illinois?

After dropping a nine-overtime marathon at home to lowly Illinois, Penn State was due to take a major tumble in the latest polls on Sunday. And that’s exactly what happened for the Nittany Lions following Week 8 of college football action.

Penn State fell 10 spots down to No. 17 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, which was updated Sunday afternoon less than 24 hours after a major disappointment in front of a homecoming crowd. But Penn State’s fall in the polls may have been given a slight pillow considering a number of other losses taken by ranked teams around the country.

Coastal Carolina and NC State each losing gave Penn State a slight cushion underneath them, as did the loss by Clemson. Coastal Carolina and NC State each remained in the top 25, although Clemson fell out after their road loss at Pitt. The Panthers moved up four spots in the coaches poll, but only up to No. 19 to remain two spots behind Penn State despite a better record of 6-1.

Penn State took the biggest tumble in this week’s coaches poll by falling nine spots after a loss to Illinois. No. 15 Oklahoma State also took a good fall by dropping six spots after a loss to Iowa State (up to No. 23 after being unranked). Coastal Carolina fell eight spots and NC State fell seven after losses to Appalachian State and Miami, respectively.

Georgia remains the unanimous No. 1 team in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after receiving all 64 first-place votes to stay ahead of No. 2 Cincinnati. But No. 3 Alabama has moved ahead of No. 4 Oklahoma, who fell two spots after having to claw back on the road against Kansas. No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, and No. 7 Michigan State remain in their spots from a week ago heading into a massive weekend of Big Ten football. Penn State is now left in the rearview mirror, at least for now, in the Big Ten East race.

No. 10 Iowa moved up one spot in its bye week to give the Big Ten four top 10 teams after Penn State fell out.

Where LSU opponents rank after week 8 in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches poll after week 8 action.

The LSU Tigers fell to the then-ranked No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday in a game that wasn’t even as close as the final score indicated.

Following their touchdown in the first quarter, LSU was outscored 31-0 in the next two quarters. It wasn’t until a field goal drive led by backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, did they even respond. Following the opening drive, the Tigers drive chart ended with turnovers three times and one missed field goal. They will take the bye week to get healthier and try and fix some of their issues.

USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll was released on Sunday. The Georgia Bulldogs seem to be the only consistent team in the rankings. They hold onto the top spot and everyone else seems to fluctuate on a week-to-week basis. The Tigers schedule will feature two ranked opponents in the final four weeks. Alabama, who knocked off Tennessee on Saturday night and Texas A&M, who throttled South Carolina.

A look at the full coaches poll after this week’s slate of games.

Is the Big Ten the best conference in college football? Right now, yes

The Big Ten is the best conference in college football, with four teams in the top 10 of the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

[mm-video type=video id=01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh-973db9747f736df95f53637f573ab808.jpg]

The polls sure seem to tell the story of a Big Ten conference that is the strongest and deepest in all of college football. The latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll shows why the Big Ten is the best in college football.

It settles at least for one year what is the best conference in college football. Even if this year has been crazier than most.

And rather than being top-heavy, the inclusion of five programs among the top 11 teams in the nation indicates the broad strength of the Big Ten. Over one-third of the conference is ranked in the top 11. No other conference can match that.

No other conference really comes close.

This all makes the argument that the Big Ten, often overlooked by the glamorous SEC and the recently top-heavy ACC, is in fact the best conference in college football. The depth and breadth of the top teams in the conference make this perhaps the most difficult conference in the sport.

And with Northwestern’s win on Saturday perhaps signaling a return to form for the Wildcats, the Big Ten is looking very strong in their top-half.

Oklahoma Sooners up two spots in latest NCAA Football Re-Rank 1-130

After a 21 point win over the TCU Horned Frogs, the Sooners moved up two spots in the latest 1-130 USA TODAY Sports NCAA Football Re-Rank.

[mm-video type=video id=01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh-973db9747f736df95f53637f573ab808.jpg]

After a big win over the TCU Horned Frogs, the Oklahoma Sooners have found themselves climbing various rankings the last couple of days. Still at No. 1 in our Big 12 Power Rankings, the Oklahoma Sooners climbed to No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

In the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Football Re-Rank, the Oklahoma Sooners moved up to No. 4 in their rankings of every team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Despite the 21 point win, the Sooners still lag behind the Georgia Bulldogs, Cincinnati Bearcats, and Alabama Crimson Tide.

Oklahoma State jumped into the top six and sit just behind the Michigan Wolverines in the re-rank.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a roll the last six quarters, outscoring the Texas Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs by a combined score of 56-30. Caleb Williams has been a game-changer for the Sooners, using his elite arm talent to beat teams at every level of the defense and create big plays with his rushing ability.

Williams has eight total touchdowns over the last two games, six passing and two rushing touchdowns against the Longhorns and Horned Frogs. The offense has been more explosive and the running game has found new life in the last two games providing optimism that the Sooners look as we’ve expected them to look during the Lincoln Riley era.
