Eagles ranked 30th out of 32 teams in USA Today’s pre-Week 1 NFL power rankings

Entering the first week of the 2021 regular season, the Eagles are ranked 30th out of 32 teams in USA Today’s NFL power rankings.

The Eagles will begin on-field preparation for the Falcons on Wednesday and as the season opener approaches, it’s time to examine the latest NFL power rankings.

Nate Davis of USA Today looked at all 32 NFL teams entering Week 1 and Philadelphia landed at bottom of the list, with only the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans coming in lower.

30. Eagles (30): Teams with so many studs in the trenches usually project to have serious postseason potential. Probably not the case here.

Philadelphia is stacked in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but it’ll be on Jalen Hurts, Miles Sanders, DeVonta Smith, and other skill players to set the tone on offense for Nick Sirianni and Shane Steichen.

Eagles continue to slide in latest USA Today NFL Power Rankings

Philadelphia Eagles are No. 29 in Week 11 USA Today NFL Power Rankings

[jwplayer g2wXvf0c]

The Philadelphia Eagles are 3-6-1 on the season and in the midst of five straight matchups against NFC powers that could determine their season.

First up is a matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

As the Eagles begin preparation for Russell Wilson and their NFC West rivals, they continue to slide, and in the latest USA Today Power Rankings, Philadelphia dropped three spots to No. 29.

29. Eagles (26): Carson Wentz owns two seasons with a QB rating exceeding 100.0. Yet the NFL turnover leader (18) hasn’t cracked the century mark in any of his 10 2020 starts and has been below 80 seven times.

Only the Bengals, Jaguars, and Jets are playing worse, and those three franchises are all in the midst of massive rebuilds.

Were Jets able to move up USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings after close loss?

The Jets are 32nd in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings as they enter their bye week.

The Jets choked away possibly their best chance of winning a game on Monday night against the Patriots. The three-point loss didn’t help them in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings.

Following the Jets’ 30-27 loss to the Pats, New York is still ranked 32nd. As for the rest of the AFC East, Buffalo is ranked sixth, Miami is ranked 10th and New England is ranked 26th.

The Steelers, Chiefs, Saints, Ravens and Titans round out the top five in the power rankings.

The Jets played some of their best football of the season on Monday night and still found a way to lose. New York coughed up a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter with sloppy play on both sides of the football. The Jets defense was unable to get off the field when it needed to, while the offense didn’t give itself a chance in the fourth quarter because of turnovers and poor decision-making.

Losing helps the Jets in the long run, though. They currently own the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft with an 0-9 record. The Jacksonville Jaguars trail the Jets by 1.5 games with a 1-7 record. A Jets win on Monday would’ve drawn the Jaguars closer to the No. 1 overall pick.

Jets still dead last in USA TODAY NFL power rankings at halfway point

The Jets are ranked 32nd in USA TODAY’s NFL power rankings at the midway point of the season.

The Jets are at the halfway point of their season and their 0-8 record isn’t helping them move up in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings.

New York is ranked 32nd for yet another week following its 35-9 loss to the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. Inside the AFC East, the Bills are ranked ninth, the Dolphins are ranked 14th and the Patriots are ranked 25th.

Prior to the deadline, the Jets traded their best inside linebacker, Avery Williamson, for a 2022 fifth-round draft pick. While the Jets didn’t make any trades after that, it’s pretty clear that they are focused on their draft picks over the next couple of years.

As for the rest of this season, the remaining Jets have eight games to prove why they should stick around next season. The Jets only have 35 players on under contract next season, so these remaining games could determine who Joe Douglas wants to bring back in 2021.

The Jets also don’t want to go down as one of the worst team’s in NFL history. The 2008 Detroit Lions and the 2017 Cleveland Browns are the only two teams in NFL history to finish with an 0-16 record. New York is halfway there at 0-8 and there is a growing sense that they will join the list.

As for the other end of the spectrum, the Steelers, Chiefs, Seahawks, Bucs and Ravens rounded out the top five in the power rankings.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Le’Veon Bell-less Jets remain in dead last

The Jets are still ranked 32nd in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings.

The Jets stood pat in USA TODAY’s latest NFL Power Rankings.

New York is still ranked 32nd following its Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Jets are one of three NFL teams that remains winless, but they’ve looked like the worst team in the league by a mile.

As for the rest of AFC East, the Patriots are ranked fourth, the Bills are 11th and the Dolphins are 18th.

The Jets don’t have a lot going for them right now. They just released Le’Veon Bell on Tuesday following his displeasure over not getting enough touches against Arizona. Sam Darnold and Mekhi Becton didn’t play in Sunday’s game due to shoulder injuries and it’s unclear when they will return.

The team the Jets are running out on the field each week has no firepower. There’s no one on either side of the ball that opposing teams have to fear each week. That makes it a lot easier for teams to do what they want against the Jets and it has shown in each of the five losses.

At this point, it’s going to take an opposing team imploding for the Jets to actually win a game. They don’t have enough pieces on offense or defense to do it themselves.

In this case, the Jets better hope the Dolphins beat themselves this week in order to get their first win of the season.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets gain ground despite blowout loss

The New York Jets are ranked 31st in USA Today’s latest NFL Power Rankings.

Despite getting blown out on the road in another uncompetitive game, the Jets gained a spot on the Giants.

USA TODAY released its NFL Power Rankings following the third week of games and the results for New York aren’t anything to write home about. It has the Jets ranked 31st — only the Giants are worse — after dropping a 36-7 contest to the Colts in Week 3.

The Jets had a better offensive gameplan, but the unit couldn’t overcome the play of Sam Darnold, who had another nightmarish outing. Darnold threw three backbreaking interceptions, including two pick-sixes and another in the end zone. On the other side of the ball, the Jets defense couldn’t pressure Philip Rivers, nor could they get off the field on third down. It was more of the same for both units in a horrific loss.

The Jets have now been outscored 94-37 through three games in the 2020 season. They’ve been largely uncompetitive and are the only team in the league to not hold a lead this season. New York now ranks 32nd in total yards, scoring, passing, first downs and red zone offense. That’s an indictment on the head coach, who is already on thin ice, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Now the Jets are vying for a win against the Broncos on a short week. The good news is they’ll likely get some reinforcements back, but all signs point to Adam Gase’s job being on the line Thursday.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets in dead last following Week 2 blowout

The New York Jets are ranked 32nd in USA Today’s latest NFL Power Rankings.

The Jets are in a league of their own at the bottom of the NFL’s totem pole.

USA TODAY released its NFL Power Rankings following the second week of games and the results for New York aren’t pretty. It has the Jets ranked 32nd — dead last — after dropping a 31-13 laugher to the 49ers in Week 2. Only the Giants were ranked worse after Week 1, but Gang Green’s no-show against a shorthanded San Francisco team helped Big Blue move up a spot despite also being 0-2.

Here’s USA TODAY’s explanation for the Jets’ ranking:

Despite facing San Francisco’s JV squad much of Sunday, New York showed scant fight in performance that should leave NYJ fans disheartened.

Excluding the play of OT Mekhi Becton, DL Quinenn Williams and New York’s special team’s unit, there weren’t many positives to take out of Sunday’s loss. Between a conservative gameplan and a defense that couldn’t stop the run or get off the field on third down, the game was over before halftime.

In the first two games of the season, the Jets have not looked up to par. Being outscored 58-30 across two weeks speaks to that. New York ranks 32nd in total offense, 31st in the running game, 30th in the passing game and 31st in scoring.

Adam Gase mentioned his struggling team needs to go into “hyperdrive” to improve, but the Jets will need a lot more than that if they want to dig themselves out of the bottom of the power rankings.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets jump two spots after beating Steelers

Where do the Jets stand in the latest USA Today NFL Power Rankings? Jets Wire takes a look.

It wasn’t a pretty win, but the Jets’ 16-10 victory over the Steelers in Week 16 was enough to propel Gang Green up two spots in the latest edition of the USA Today NFL power rankings.

New York rises from No. 23 to No. 21 following its sixth win of the season. The Jets got off to a 10-0 start against Pittsburgh, but sputtered offensively for the remainder of the afternoon. If it weren’t for the leg of Sam Ficken and arguably the best play of safety Marcus Maye’s career on the Steelers’ final offensive possession of the game, things easily could’ve gone the other way.

Gang Green will have a chance to finish on a high note and rise one last time in the rankings in Week 17 against the Bills. Currently No. 9 in the rankings, Buffalo will play its starters against New York despite being locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs. It remains to be seen how long Sean McDermott will roll with his starters, but it could play a major role in the Jets’ ability to end the season 7-9.

As for the rest of the AFC East, the Patriots jump up two spots from No. 9 to No. 7 following their nail-biting win over the Bills. The Dolphins stood pat at No. 29.

The Baltimore Ravens remained atop the rankings, while the San Francisco 49ers rose from No. 4 to No. 2 as the NFC’s premier team. The Saints dropped one spot from No. 2 to No. 3, the Kansas City Chiefs jumped up a spot from No. 5 to No. 4 and the Green Bay Packers entered the top five after being ranked sixth a week ago.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets drop another 2 spots following TNF loss

Check out where the Jets stand in the latest edition of the USA TODAY NFL power rankings.

The Jets got a dose of reality after being blown out on Thursday Night Football by the red-hot Baltimore Ravens.

Now 5-9 on the season and with two games left to play, the Jets moved down another two spots in the latest edition of USA TODAY’s NFL power rankings.

New York moved down from No. 21 to No. 23 in the power rankings after losing to the Ravens, 42-21. The Jets could not do the unthinkable and pull off an upset on primetime football.

Baltimore’s No. 1 rushing offense punched the Jets’ No. 2 rushing defense in the mouth. The Ravens ran for 218 yards on 34 carries, adding a score with a Mark Ingram rushing touchdown.

The unstoppable force that is Lamar Jackson threw for five touchdowns, completing 15 of 23 passes for 213 yards. The clear-cut MVP helped his team clinch the AFC North division title with its 12th win of the season.

The Jets didn’t get blown out in the first half, but merely didn’t take advantage of opportunities in the red zone. Gang Green exposed blemishes in Baltimore’s defense and special teams, but they weren’t enough to make a dent.

As for the rest of the AFC East, the 10-4 Bills moved up one spot to No. 10 after knocking off the Steelers on Sunday Night Football. The Dolphins dropped two spots to No. 29 after losing to the Eli Manning-led Giants. The Patriots stayed at No. 9 after beating the Bengals, but it wasn’t without controversy.

Rounding out the top five are the Ravens at No. 1, the Saints at No. 2, the Seahawks at No. 3, the 49ers at No. 4 and the Chiefs at No. 5.

Buccaneers make another climb in latest USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings

The Buccaneers have taken huge steps in the right direction over the past month, which is why they are 13th this week.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are losing receivers left and right, but quarterback Jameis Winston refuses to go down with the ship.

After becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 450 yards in back-to-back games, Winston is now just 427 yards away from the 5,000-yard mark. With two games remaining, Winston easily has a shot at reaching the milestone, but, he’ll have to do so with a thin receiving corps.

Mike Evans had already been ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury prior to Sunday’s win over the Lions, but in that game Tampa Bay saw Chris Godwin go down with a hamstring injury that could end his season. And, today, the Bucs placed rookie receiver Scotty Miller on IR. If Winston is going to make history, he’ll need some help to get there.

Still, Tampa Bay has won four-straight games and look like a team readying for the postseason, even if they won’t get there. But, they can still play spoiler to the visiting Houston Texans in Week 16.

Houston should not take Tampa Bay for granted, especially now that the Bucs have climbed up to No. 13 in the latest USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings.

In his explanation, writer Nate Davis points out something very important when it comes to the NFL’s geographic accuracy, or lack thereof.

“Unfortunately for [the Bucs], NFL eschews geographic accuracy … otherwise Bucs might be winning NFC East while Cowboys sank in NFC South.”

It really is ridiculous that the Cowboys are part of the NFC East when you consider the fact that New York, Philadelphia and Washington are all within driving distance of each other.

Hopefully, next year, the Bucs will have a healthy roster and be ready to contend for a playoff spot. And, based on how things have looked over the last few weeks, it seems more and more likely that Winston will get at least one more year to prove himself.
