Oregon basketball moves up into the Top 10 in latest coaches poll

The Oregon men’s basketball team is now a Top 10 team in the USA TODAY coaches poll.

We’re all used to seeing Dana Altman’s teams get off to a slow start, steadily improve over the course of the season and then be a dangerous team when February and March rolls around.

There hasn’t been a slow start this time.

Oregon is off to a 10-1 start with wins over ranked teams such as Texas A&M and Alabama. The Ducks have been rewarded with a Top 10 ranking in the latest coaches poll. Oregon is No. 10 in the nation as they moved up two spots from last week’s poll.

The Ducks had just one game last week, a 79-61 win over Stephen F. Austin at Matthew Knight Arena. It was a good bounce-back game after Oregon suffered its first loss of the year to UCLA.

Alabama is No. 7 in the poll while Texas A&M is right behind the Ducks at No. 11. Tennessee is the top-ranked team in the country with its 10-0 record.

Oregon is the top-ranked team in the Big Ten with Purdue coming in at No. 17 and the Bruins at No. 18. Michigan State is No. 19 and Michigan is No. 21.

Ducks finish in the top half of the US LBM Coaches poll

The final US LBM Coaches poll was published the day after Michigan defeated Washington for the national championship and Oregon finished in the Top 10.

The Ducks were ranked No. 7 in the final poll with 1,213 votes. Only Washington was ranked higher than Oregon as far as the Pac-12 was concerned.

In the strongest season for the Pac-12 and ironically its last, only three teams were represented in the poll with Arizona at No. 11 being the only other school on the list.

The Huskies remained at No. 2 despite losing to the Wolverines.

For the last bowl season for the Pac-12, the conference finished 5-3 with just Utah, Cal and Oregon State losing their games.

Oregon opens season as one of five ranked Pac-12 teams in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Oregon opens the season as the No. 15 team in the nation, according to the first USA TODAY/Coaches poll of the2023 season.

With all of the big off-the-field news in the past week, we tend to forget there is an actual football season that is just three weeks away from beginning.

In the first preseason USA TODAY/Coaches poll in the 2023 season, the Oregon Ducks will start as the No. 15 team in the nation.

The usual gambit of football powerhouses are on top with Georgia, the two-time defending national champion as the No. 1 team in the country.

It’s ironic this is the last season of the Pac-12 because the conference boasts some of the better teams the conference as seen since the expansion. A total of five Pac-12 are ranked with USC leading the way at No. 6.

Oregon baseball finds itself ranked prominently in all season-ending polls

Oregon baseball finished the season as high as No. 12 and as low as No. 19 in all of the college baseball polls.

With the College World Series ending with an LSU dogpile on the mound, all six college baseball polls have been released one final time and the Ducks are squarely in the middle of all of them.

According to these polls, Oregon baseball finds itself ranked as high as No. 12 and as low as No. 19.

D1Baseball.com was the poll that gave the Ducks their highest ranking and well … USA TODAY Sports gave the lowest.

Baseball America ranked Oregon 13th and the National College Baseball Writers of America said the Ducks were No. 14 in the country.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper also gave Oregon a No. 13 ranking as did Perfect Game.

All in all, it’s a solid ending for the Ducks, but obviously it’s not where Oregon or its head coach Mark Wasikowski envisioned at the start of the season. The goal is and always has been to reach Omaha and the CWS, a goal that’s still elusive for the Ducks.

For the 2024 season, Oregon is expected to field another strong team that will contend for its first Pac-12 regular season title and hopefully its first trip to Omaha since 1954.

Two losses at USC might have cost Oregon more than its ranking

Oregon’s two losses in Los Angeles hurt the Ducks in many more ways than just their Top 25 ranking.

Losing three of four games last week dropped the Oregon Ducks baseball team out of the USA TODAY Coaches poll.

The Ducks were ranked 19th in the country, but a loss at Oregon State and two defeats at USC were enough to cost Oregon their top-25 ranking.

Coach Mark Wasikowski’s team still holds fourth place in the Pac-12 with a 14-10 conference mark and 31-16 overall. But the two losses to the Trojans might have severely hurt the Ducks’ chances at possibly hosting an NCAA regional. They have an RPI of 26, which fell four spots from No. 22.

The top 16 teams host regionals.

Oregon plays its final home series this weekend before ending the regular season at Utah and then the conference tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Despite not playing, Oregon moves up in final USA TODAY coaches poll

Oregon’s rollercoaster ride up and down the USA TODAY Coaches poll ends with them rising in the final standings.

Polls can be a weird thing and completely subjective. Oregon is a prime example as the Ducks moved up a spot to No. 14 in the final USA TODAY Coaches poll on the 2022 season.

The Ducks finished the season with a 9-3 record and had a rollercoaster ride where the poll was concerned. Oregon was as high as No. 6 after the UCLA win and was as low as No. 24 after the beatdown of Week 1 against Georgia.

But the Ducks reeled off eight straight wins and put themselves in a position to be in the College Football Playoff discussion. But the loss to Washington ended those dreams.

Now Oregon awaits what bowl game it will be heading to later this month and the quality opponent.

Despite losing the Pac-12 title game, USC wound up at No. 8 and the team that beat the Trojans twice, Utah, finished at No. 10. Washington at No. 12, Oregon State at No. 16 and UCLA at No. 18 rounds out the poll for the Conference of Champions.

Here’s the Top 25.

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. Ohio State
  4.  TCU
  5. Alabama

Oregon tumbles down USA TODAY Coaches poll following loss to OSU

The Ducks fell six spots in the USA TODAY Coaches poll after the 38-34 loss to the Beavers.

Oregon flirted with a Top 10 finish in the USA TODAY Coaches poll, but after the loss in Corvallis, the Ducks most likely won’t be in the upper echelon.

They finished the regular season No. 15 in the country with a 9-3 record. Considering they finished the season losing two of their last three games, Oregon should feel fortunate to be ranked that high. Oregon State jumped up six spots to be ranked No. 16.

USC is the conference’s only hope to be in the College Football Playoff. After the Trojans 38-27 win over Notre Dame, USC moved up a spot and are ranked No. 4 in the country with their 11-1 record. They face No. 12 Utah, the only team to give the Men of Troy a loss this season.

The Top 25 falls this way:

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. TCU
  4. USC
  5. Ohio State
  6. Alabama

Utah fell down to No. 14 and Washington moved three spots up to No. 12. Oregon State, the Ducks’ next opponent, keeps on rolling and is now No. 22 in the nation. Ducks take a huge hit in the coaches poll after loss to Huskies

Following the home loss to Washington, Oregon dropped seven spots in the USA TODAY Coaches poll.

The Oregon Ducks football team fell seven spots to No. 13 in the USA TODAY Coaches poll after the 37-34 loss to Washington.

With the win, the Huskies made a leap of eight spots to No. 15 in the country. The Pac-12 still has two Top 10 teams with USC at No. 6 and Utah at No. 10. Oregon still has a chance to climb in the poll as the Utes come to Autzen this Saturday and they could face the Trojans in the Pac-12 title game.

But the conference chaos doesn’t end there.

Thanks to their upset loss to Arizona, UCLA dropped to No. 16. Oregon State just missed the Top 25 after defeating California to go to 7-3 on the season.
