The United States will face Canada in the Gold Medal game at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship from Edmonton, Alberta on Tuesday night.

This will be the first time these two teams have met in the title game since 2017 when the United States beat Canada 5-4 in a shootout. They both arrived in the gold medal game in different fashion. Team USA gave up a 3-1 lead last night and were searching for a goal with only 76 seconds left in the game, they got it from Arthur Kaliyev to beat Finland 4-3. Canada has just cruised through the tournament without allowing a goal, they are coming off an onslaught win over Russia 5-0.

This will be a fantastic game tonight against the two biggest rivals in hockey, USA versus Canada. Here is everything you need to know to stream the action tonight:

Prediction: This is a tough one since Canada has steamrolled opponents in this tournament but it’s always a good one when these two meet. I do see value in this United States team, they have never given up and have played very well as of late. I’ll take the 1.5 goals with the US as well as USA ML.

Bet: USA +1.5 (-105). USA ML +260

Landon Slaggert Makes U.S. World Junior Championship Camp Roster

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December.

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December. The Irish’s freshman forward has been named to the U.S. roster for the camp in preparation for the World Junior Championship. The camp begins Dec. 6, and the roster will have 25 names for the tournament, which runs from Christmas Day to Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native, recorded the first point of his collegiate career in the Irish’s 3-2 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday. He and his brother, Graham, both had assists on Nate Clurman’s goal. He has played in all four of the Irish’s games played thus far.

Notre Dame has sent 22 players to the World Junior Championship previously. Last year, Spencer Stastney and Jake Pivonka became the most recent Irish players to take part. Irish medalists in this tournament over the years are Andrew Peeke, Anders Bjork, Mario Lucia, Kyle Palmieri, Kyle Lawson and Ben Simon.

Was 1988 Notre Dame’s Closest Thing to a “Miracle” Type Championship?

It did get me thinking though, was Notre Dame’s 1988 squad the equivalent of the the 1980 Miracle on Ice squad?

Before you scream and yell that nothing could ever be know that I already agree with you on that.  However, let’s just make a few comparisons real fast on the anniversary of this great event.

Forty years ago today perhaps the greatest upset in the history of team sports as the United States men’s hockey team upset the Soviet Union in one of the most iconic moments in the history of sports at any level.

Based off the timing of the game in conjunction with the Cold War and other world events of the time, it’s almost impossible to imagine quite a perfect storm even presenting itself again, let alone playing out like those 1980 Olympics did.  If I could go back in time to witness one sporting event I wasn’t alive for it’d be this and it really wouldn’t be particularly close as to whatever number two even is.

It did get me thinking though, was Notre Dame’s 1988 squad the equivalent of the the 1980 Miracle on Ice squad?

Before you scream and yell that nothing could ever be know that I already agree with you on that.  However, there are some parallels worth at least bringing up.

For instance – the hardship the United States was going through in the late seventies and the Cold War being on everyone’s mind doesn’t allow for really any comparison.  But for at least comparison’s sake, Notre Dame football hadn’t won a national championship in eleven years entering 1988 (which doesn’t seem like very long anymore) but had finished  a season ranked just one time in the previous seven years, six of which were in consecutive years which remains the worst run since the AP Poll has begun being taken.
