Bishop Gorman legend Tony Sanchez fired at UNLV. What next for high school coaches making move to college?

Former Bishop Gorman head coach Tony Sanchez was fired as the head coach at UNLV. Will that end the pathway for high school coaches directly to the head of college programs?

After five years, the Tony Sanchez era at UNLV is officially over.

Sanchez was dismissed as UNLV’s head football coach Monday, though the school announced he would remain in place for the team’s final game against Nevada on Saturday. Sanchez finishes his UNLV career with a record of 19-40, pending his final game Saturday. The Rebels are 3-8 in 2019.

Sanchez arrived at UNLV with fanfare after leading Las Vegas high school football powerhouse Bishop Gorman to back-to-back USA TODAY Super 25 national titles. Sanchez and his brother, Kenny, are credited with transforming Bishop Gorman’s football program into a national powerhouse with annual TV dates on the ESPN networks and a handful of major Division I recruits annually. UNLV essentially bet that the elder Sanchez brother could take the success he had at Gorman and replicate it at the collegiate level provided the same commitment to facilities and his resources. To that end, UNLV built the Fertitta Football Complex, a best-in-class football training facility, which just opened on campus in fall 2019. The building was constructed at a cost of $34 million.

While Sanchez may not have driven the results he aimed for, his contract did represent a relative bargain among FBS head coaches: Per the Associated Press, Sanchez has a $300,000 base salary, and is due two more seasons at that rate on his current contract.

For UNLV, the move is likely to be seen as a gross positive. While Sanchez was unsuccessful on the field, he helped instill some of the backbone of other successful programs while also spearheaded the development of significantly improved facilities. Those new practice facilities will be joined by a concurrent move to the Oakland Raiders’ new stadium in fall of 2020, and the combination of brand new practice facilities and a new, sparkling NFL stadium could draw interest from a class of free agent coaches that might have stayed away in years past.

As for Sanchez’s future, there will certainly be at least some speculation that he could return to Bishop Gorman to coach alongside his brother again. Tony Sanchez has provided no indication that’s in the offing, or even a consideration, but he’s also allegedly laser focused on his final game at UNLV, against Nevada, on Saturday.

The secondary questions that are sure to follow relate to larger questions about high school coaches making the leap directly to collegiate programs. In addition to Sanchez, former North Texas coach Todd Dodge lasted less than four years with the Mean Green before he, too, was let go after amassing a 6-37 record.

With those two setting up as the most prominent direct from high school college coaches there’s a natural question about whether another program will be willing to take a similar plunge. It’s instructive to consider the relative profile and similarities of North Texas and UNLV when they made their hires: both were upstart programs coming off abysmal runs under prior coaches. Both were essentially in a no-lose situation where committing multiple years to rebuild the program’s infrastructure would be acceptable, and both committed to the coach for multiple years at the outset.

For what it’s worth, both programs lived up to those promises, too. They just finally reached a breaking point and came to the conclusion that the future looked brighter with someone else at the helm.

Where else could a program like that emerge? There are contenders, but whether they’ll be as bold as North Texas and UNLV remains to be seen.

UNLV is in the market for a new coach.

UNLV announced that is not going to retain Tony Sanchez after five years and with a 19-40 record but he will be on the sidelines this weekend taking on Nevada with a chance to win the Fremont Cannon.

The team released statements from Sanchez and athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois.

“We appreciate everything that Tony has done for our university and football program,” Reed-Francois said. “He made us better. Because of his work and his vision, we have the best facilities in the Mountain West and rival some of the best in the country.”

The announcement came to no one’s surprise as Sanchez has not been able to get the UNLV team to a bowl game during his time, and that was basically a requirement said by Reed-Francois last spring when she was evaulating the football program.

“I’m grateful for my time here and proud of the strides we made as a football program, on and off the field,” Sanchez said. “I’m proud of our student-athletes and our staff and how we have positioned the program for future success. I look forward to finishing the season strong with these young men.”

That is not to say that he did not do good things for the program. He was able to help bring in money for the program to build facilities including the Fertitta Football Complex.

The on the field success was not there and that includes one glaring game vs. Howard back in 2017 which UNLV was a heavy favorite but lost the game, 43-40. That team ended with just five wins and had they won over that FCS foe, the Rebels would have gone bowling at least once in his tenure.

There are other reasons as well for his ouster but it comes down to not getting wins. He was given a decent amount of time to improve the Rebels but coming from a high school program, even one of the best in the country in Bishop Gorman, it always was going to be an uphill battle to turn the Rebels into a winning team.

One thing that did hurt him this season was the loss of offensive coordinator Barney Cotton who had a heart transplant prior to the season, and that left Sanchez and the Rebels scrambling for an offensive coordinator. Cotton seemed to be a very important piece of this staff and the offense was never really all that consistent or really good with the replacement coordinator.

The timing of the firing by allowing Sanchez to coach the finale has a few reasons by the higher ups at UNLV. The main one is that if the Rebels were to defeat rival Nevada and win the Fremont Cannon by ending the year winning back-to-back games. There then could be fan support in allowing him to stay on as coach and lead the UNLV football team into the new Raiders stadium.

Doing it this way nixes that possibility, and with that UNLV goes into a new era of Rebel football.

Sanchez has two years left on his contract after 2019 and will be paid his base salary through 2021 which is $300,000 per year.

What We Learned After Week 13 Of Mountain West Football

Week 13 is in the books.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Titles clinched and dreams crashed.

Air Force – Donald Hammond III lived up to the Falcon moniker by throwing for 327 yards on just 9 of 10 passes and four touchdowns. This performance might have just gave the Falcons signal-caller the player of the year award.

Boise State – Apparently, it doesn’t matter who plays quarterback for Boise State as Jaylen Hendersen helped lead the Broncos to a thrasing of a win over Utah State which clinched the Mountain Division title.

Colorado State – We learned that when the Rams play a really good defense like it did vs. Wyoming that it offense struggles. This is nothing new when teams play the Cowboys but Colorado State’s offense has been extremely good of late and it just happened to run into a tough defense.

Fresno State – Oh boy. The offense line was a complete mess in this game and the coaching staff made some odd coaching decisions like not giving the ball to running back Ronnie Rivers and also passing three consecutive times with 90 seconds left and in the shadow of their goal posts.

Hawaii – Warriors win a defensive game and stopped the San Diego State rushing game to clinch the West Divison. The offensive passing game was pretty efficient but the standard Warriors eye-popping numbers were not there. However, the turnovers were held to a minimum of just one and for some reason head coach Nick Rolovich swapped between Cole McDonald and Chevan Corderio.

Nevada – Welcome to 2019, Toa Taua. The sophomore running back had just his second game of more than 100 yards on the ground. Taua’s season can be classified as a sophomore slump but he does have two games left to build up on the 135 yards he had vs. Fresno State.

New Mexico – Nothing. Literally nothing. The top two running backs are out with injuries and starting quarterback Tevaka Tuioti left the game. It is only a matter of time before Bob Davie is released of his duties.

San Diego State – The running game was completely shutdown vs. Hawaii and this area of the team has been an issue all year and it continued on the islands on Saturday night.

San Jose State – Josh Love is really good. He had 465 yards and three touchdowns but he had four picks. The only problem is that Love can not do it all and the running game did not really help his cause this week.

UNLV – The defense is better thane expected as they forced five turnovers vs. San Jose State. This is the second game they had a good defensive performance as they held Hawaii to just 21 points the week prior, but it was a game they lost.

Utah State – Where to begin? The glamour position of quarterback has not been nice to Jordan Love. He had another bad interception that led to a pick-six in the blowout loss to Boise State. The defense of the Aggies was not good and they were taken apart by third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson.

Wyoming – There is depth at quarterback people did not know. Levi Williams had to enter the game vs. Colorado State and he moved the ball well, specifically with his feet, as Tyler Vander Wall was getting treatment for an injured leg. Also, the Cowboys defense put the clamps down on a pretty good Rams offense.

The championship game is set, bowl dreams dashed.

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap another week of Mountain West football and there was a lot on the line this week. Boise State and Hawaii both clinched the division crowns and there will be a rematch for the league title vs. the two teams. Bowl dreams were dashed with Fresno State, Colorado State and San Jose State all going down this weekend.

Also, we go through and attempt to figure out who should be offensive player of the year through each game recap, and it looks like the vote could go to any number of players.

Mountain West Football Bowl Projections After Week 13

Only seven teams will be bowl eligible.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

No more bowl eligible teams.

The Mountain West will have seven bowl-eligible teams this season since the teams in contention to get to six wins all lost. The seven teams are Boise State, Air Force, Utah State, Nevada, Hawaii, San Diego State, and Wyoming.

All have seven more wins except for Utah State and with the Mountain West having just six official bowl tie-ins there is a chance a team could get left out. At this time that team would be Utah State if they end up with six wins. The NCAA has a rule that they must take all teams with seven or more wins before they can choose a six-win team. The Aggies finish the season at New Mexico and that should allow them to get to seven wins.

As where teams will be placed it is getting more clear each week but there will be some changes if the New Year’s Six spot goes to the Mountain West.

The Broncos are in line to win out and have a good chance to do so, but there are two AAC team ahead of them in the pecking order in Memphis and Cincinnati. The latter has struggled mightily against bad teams and just keeps escaping with wins. The new College Football Playoff rankings probably will have Boise State pass the Bearcats but not Memphis. Those two AAC team will play on the final week of the season and then most likely again the following week.

Things can change and as much as Boise State looks to be good enough to be ahead of any American team, that pick can not be justified currently since the Broncos are not the highest-rated team in the Group of Five.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. Starting with the Hawaii Bowl. The game has a vaguely worded tie-in which is a combination between BYU, Hawaii or an AAC team. The Warriors have a 13-game schedule and must have seven wins to secure a bowl berth. Technically, BYU takes the Mountain West spot but a Cougars vs. Warriors matchup would be a classic WAC rivalry renewal.

There is a new bowl this year and it’s a Power Five opponent from the Big Ten in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Overall, the league has six guaranteed bowl berths and is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac-12 or Big 12 does not have enough teams eligible. As always, there can be trades for the best matchups.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game is an option at either the Cotton or Orange Bowl.

1. Las Vegas vs. Pac-12

– Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC
– Gildan New Mexico Bowl vs. Conference USA
– Hawai’i Bowl vs. BYU or American
– NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. Sun Belt
– Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl vs. Big Ten
– Cheez-It Bowl Conditional for MW if bowl can’t fill a spot.

298 games down, one to go.

The UNLV Rebels will bid adieu to Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday afternoon when the host the San Jose State Spartans, hoping to provide an enduring highlight to what has been a disappointing season.

Brent Brennan’s team still has plenty to play for, however, since winning out would enable the Spartans to clinch bowl eligibility for the first time since 2013 (note: SJSU did play in the 2015 Cure Bowl, but they did so with a 5-7 record before winning it).

How can either side get back into the win column? Here’s our preview.

Three Keys to a UNLV Victory

1. Get chunk plays. Lots of them.

The Spartans haven’t been shy about letting Josh Love rip it and Saturday should be the latest opportunity to do just that. San Jose State leads the Mountain West with 32 pass plays of 20-plus yards in conference play, while UNLV ranks tenth by that same measure on defense with 24 such plays allowed.

Tre Walker would appear to be the most obvious potential beneficiary, as 15 of his 59 catches have gone for at least 20 yards, but it’s worth keeping in mind that senior Bailey Gaither could be the X-factor that’s harder to account for because he, too, has a 20-yard catch rate just above 25%.

2. Revive the pass rush again.

Hawaii pitched a shutout in the sack column against SJSU two weeks ago, but it’s worth keeping in mind that, after a woeful start to the season, the Spartans’ pass rush has mostly perked up in recent weeks. Their season-long 5.1% sack rate still ranks just 91st nationally, but they had ten sacks in a three-game stretch against San Diego State, Army, and Boise State.

In other words, they can beat a beatable offensive line and UNLV definitely qualifies as such with an 8.2% sack rate allowed.

3. Contain the tight ends.

One thing that UNLV has done reasonably well this year is get the ball to Giovanni Fauolo and Noah Bean, so Spartans linebackers may have a trick task on their hands. Fauolo and Bean have combined for 38 receptions and averaged 15.7 yards per catch, so in defending an overall limited passing offense, slowing the big targets down will be crucial.

Three Keys to a UNLV Victory

1. Don’t give the Spartans a short field.

Much of this key will come down to avoiding the killer mistake when dropping back to pass, but UNLV has actually benefitted from a bit of good fumble luck to this point, too, in losing just six of 14 fumbles to this point (42.9%). Meanwhile, the Spartans have been pretty unlucky by that same measure with a conference-high 20 opponent fumbles and only seven recoveries (35%).

That’s the kind of fortune which could snap back toward the mean anytime, so if trends hold for another afternoon and the Spartans keep creating opportunities, the Rebels could put themselves in an unenviable position.

This will be doubly important if the Rebels find a way to keep things close late because only one other FBS quarterback, Arkansas State’s Layne Fletcher, has thrown six fourth-quarter interceptions like Kenyon Oblad.

2. Win on third downs.

It’s no secret that the Rebels have struggled mightily moving the chains, but this stoppable force is finally facing a very movable object: UNLV’s 27.5% third-down conversion rate on offense and San Jose State’s 52.3% conversion rate on defense means that something will have to give.

Which side will gain the upper hand? It’s hard to say, but setting the running game up to succeed would go a long way toward helping UNLV. When facing third and three or fewer yards, the Rebels have converted 17 of 37 rushing attempts (45.9%).

3. Don’t let Hayes Hicken down.

In a conference chock full of top-notch specialists, the Rebels’ senior punter has kept busy and quietly put forth a solid campaign. He’s averaged a solid 43.4 yards per punt with ten kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, but special teams have been a huge issue for UNLV all season long and the also Rebels rank 125th in the FBS with 33.9 net yards per return. San Jose State doesn’t have much more than a modest return game themselves, but making the Spartans work for a long drive is one of the little things that could make a big difference.

Prediction

The Rebels haven’t been able to put forth a complete sixty minutes nearly all season and it’s not even clear they have a strength that compares to San Jose State’s passing attack at this point. They were able to clamp down on Hawaii a week ago, but it’s hard to imagine the defense doing it again. In short, the home fans will get to walk out of Sam Boyd Stadium disappointed one last time.

San Jose State 34, UNLV 17

Week 13 Mountain West Football Power Rankings

Utah State makes a leap in the polls.

The top is fairly solid.

After 12 weeks of Mountain West play the teams have separated throughout with Boise State at the top and has been there for the past few weeks. They will have a challenge this week as the go on the road to face Utah State, which moved up two spots from four to six, this weekend.

The game is going to be interesting as the starting quarterbacks on both sides are up in the air and also the division title is on the line. A Broncos win seals it but an Aggies win will make things go down a rabbit hold of scenarios which are explained here.

That result has a chance to shake these up, especially if Utah State wins.

On the other side, there is a definitive Division title game on the line with San Diego State which remained at three at Hawaii which is five. This one is a winner-take-all and advance to the Mountain West championship game.

As for the rest of the poll, the Wyoming Cowboys dropped from three to six after losing consecutive games to Boise State and Utah State. They are at six wins and they would feel a whole lot more comfortable for a bowl bid by getting to seven so a repeat of missing out on a bowl game like last year does not happen.

Tiebreaker or championship weekend

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 13th week of Mountain West football. There are rivalries and championships on the line. The Bronze Boot gets things started on Friday night with Colorado State taking on Wyoming. The Rams are wanting to remain in the discussion for a bowl game.

The Saturday games have two big ones that could determine the championship game attendees. A Boise State win over Utah State puts them in the title game and hosting, a loss means tiebreakers come into play. San Diego State vs. Hawaii is a winner-take-all in the West Division and is a late-night Facebook game.

Nevada takes on Fresno State and the Bulldogs are wanting to get to a bowl game and need to get this win to have at least five and then win next week as well. The other game is San Jose State who is also looking to stay on track for a bowl game and they are on the road at UNLV.
