Colts make changes to logo, uniforms

A look at the subtle changes to the uniform.

The Indianapolis Colts are preparing for the 2020 NFL draft but made some subtle changes to the uniform and logos ahead of the new season.

Though these changes aren’t on a big scale like teams who have changed entire uniforms, there are additions like a secondary logo and a change in the wordmark on the helmets and jerseys.

These aren’t huge changes to the uniform. The additions like the secondary logo on the neckline will be noticeable. The secondary logo also has the state of Indiana inside of it.

It doesn’t seem the Colts will be making any major changes to the uniform anytime but some subtle tweaks will be taking place for the 2020 season.

Minnesota Vikings uniforms rank No. 11 in power rankings

Minnesota ranked behind two teams in the NFC North on Touchdown Wire’s uniform power rankings.

The Vikings have a long-lasting identity with the color purple, and that helped them be in the top half of Touchdown Wire’s uniform rankings.

Minnesota is ranked No. 11 on the list. The team released a “Primetime Purple” jersey in 2019, and it also tweaked the helmet color slightly in 2019.

Two NFL teams that released new uniforms this week are both behind Minnesota in the Touchdown Wire power rankings. The Falcons ranked No. 21 and the Buccaneers ranked right behind the Vikings at No. 12.

Here’s what the outlet had to say about the Vikings:

“The Minnesota Vikings created an image around the color purple and it remains with the team. The look may have been modernized and stylized through time but it stands the test.”

The only NFC North team that the Vikings ranked ahead of were the Bears, which came in at No. 29. The Packers ranked ahead of the Vikings at No. 10. The Lions were second.

The Chargers were the No. 1 team in the ranks.

Seahawks uniforms come in at No. 5 on Touchdown Wire’s rankings

The Seahawks uniforms were bested only by the Cowboys, Ravens, Lions and Chargers in Touchdown Wire’s rankings.

The fine folks over at Touchdown Wire gave NFL fans something to debate this week, ranking each team based on their uniforms. The Seattle Seahawks came in at No. 5 overall on the list, ranking behind the Cowboys, Ravens, Lions and Chargers.

“Pick any look or color combination you want,” author Barry Warner wrote. “The Seattle Seahawks always look great when they take the field.”

The Seahawks have stuck with the royal blue and green combination for some time, although they have alternates in white and grey as well. Perhaps their most controversial uniforms are the color rush neon greens, which they bust out a few times per year, when allowed.

Because of the NFL’s rule only allowing teams to wear one helmet per season, the Seahawks have not gone back to the bright blue uniforms they dawned from 1976-2002.

However, those rules are being discussed, and already quarterback Russell Wilson has voiced his support for wearing the throwbacks in the future, if they are able to get the rule changed.

For now, Seattle can rest easy knowing they have among the best uniforms in the game.

4 jersey changes the Texans need to make for the 2020 season

The Houston Texans need to make four changes to their jerseys for the 2020 season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons have unveiled their latest uniforms, which begs the question on the mind of every Houston sports fan: when will the Texans upgrade their look?

The Texans already have some of the nicer looking uniform combinations in the NFL. However, they should make these four changes for the 2020 season.

1. Make the color rush jerseys permanent home jerseys

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Since 2017, the Texans have busted out their color rush jerseys for prime time games or when they play the Cleveland Browns. The Texans are 5-0 in these jerseys.

Instead of wearing them for special occasions, Houston should make these the permanent home jerseys at NRG Stadium. The look still holds true to the color scheme of red, blue, and a little bit of white, but also gives a more upgraded look. They are also very emblematic of the Deshaun Watson era as he is the only Texans starting quarterback to wear these jerseys, and his first start of his career came in them in Week 2 of 2017.

Georgia great Todd Gurley going to look fresh in new Atlanta Falcons’ uniforms

Former UGA football RB Todd Gurley is going to look sick in these new Atlanta Falcons uniforms.

It’s been 17 years since the Atlanta Falcons made a significant uniform change. On Wednesday, the team released their new Nike-designed uniforms.

The new look will feature an all black ensemble for home games with white jerseys and white pants on the road. The helmet retains the familiar logo but will change to a matte finish. Several of the uniforms will showcase ‘ATL’ on the front of the jersey.

There will be eight different color combinations, including the current 1966 throwback version, and a new “Rise Up” alternate uniform.

The Falcons finished 7-9 last season. During the off-season, Atlanta signed former Georgia running back and past NFL Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley to a one-year contract. In addition, the team traded for former South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst. On offense, the team should be well-stacked with Matt Ryan at quarterback, Alabama alums Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley at wide receiver and five former first rounders on the offensive line.  The Falcons currently have five draft picks in the upcoming draft, including the No. 16 pick in round one.

“Black has been a part of our history since 1966 and both our fans and players have asked us to bring it back,” owner Arthur Blank wrote in a statement. “The ‘ATL’ moniker is known around the world and we now we it proudly as our badge of unity, diversity and togetherness. Something our world needs more of, especially in these tough times.”

POLL: Falcons got creative with new uniforms. Would you want the Vikings to do that?

The Falcons went with a unique uniform design. Down the road, would you want the Vikings to mix it up like they did? Vote at the bottom of the article!

Photos of the new Atlanta uniform leaked online, which bumped up the official unveiling by the Falcons to Wednesday, according to USA TODAY.

ATL is front and center on the new uniforms. This is a big departure from the team’s previous uniform, which featured the word “Falcons” in much smaller print above the jersey number.

The question is ….would you want the Vikings to be as creative?

Right now, the Vikings’ uniforms look more like the Falcons’ old ones, the team name in small print right above the jersey number. But maybe the Falcons’ new look is a sign of a larger trend.

Also, the Vikings released a “Primetime Purple” jersey in 2019, so Minnesota spices it up with the uniforms every now and then. The team also tweaked the helmet color slightly in 2019.

The Buccaneers, which unveiled their jersey before the Falcons, went the more traditional route with their uniform.

So, the Vikings have some options down the road: go the old way, or get crazy like the Falcons. What do you think, Vikings fans? Below is a poll that you can vote on, whether you want the Vikings to freshen it up a little or keep to standard traditions.

Falcons take the baton from the Bucs for the NFC South’s worst uniforms

The Saints and Panthers are on top of the NFC South uniform power rankings, with new Buccaneers and Falcons jerseys buried in the basement.

[jwplayer B0KjjViB-ThvAeFxT]

There must be some sort of agreement between the teams in the NFC South that one team must wear a terrible numbers font on their jerseys at all times. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ushered in the Tom Brady era with a flourish by ditching their maligned, digital alarm clock-styled uniforms, opting instead for the most generic red-on-white jerseys you could imagine.

Not to be outdone, the Atlanta Falcons introduced their own new uniforms: and boy, are they ugly. Featuring an ill-advised color gradient from red to black — looking more like an old Texas Tech alternate than an NFL kit — the jerseys are offset by a two-tone font for the numbers that tries to create a three-dimensional illusion. Instead, it looks like nothing so much as a child’s unfinished coloring book.

Funnily enough, the Falcons’ new black-on-black look is a near-match for the uniform worn by Adam Sandler in his 2005 film “The Longest Yard,” which the Carolina Panthers official Twitter account was helpful enough to highlight:

Bless their hearts. Maybe the New Orleans Saints can make up for the NFC South’s weak uniform game by upgrading their “Color Rush” variants to full-time status. We can dream, right?

Why Chiefs won’t be changing uniforms anytime soon

Kansas City will likely continue to take the traditional approach with their uniforms.

A total of seven teams are slated to have changes to their uniforms for the 2020 NFL season, but you can rest assured the Kansas City Chiefs won’t be joining these teams soon, if at all.

The Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts all have planned logo and uniform changes for 2020. The New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns have yet to reveal their planned uniform changes, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons have recently revealed their new uniforms to the world.

You can take a look at both of those uniform reveals from the NFC South down below:

If the Chiefs Kingdom is hoping to see the team follow other franchises and redesign their logo or jersey, they’re going to be disappointed. In April of 2018, Chiefs team president Mark Donovan spoke with ESPN’s Adam Teicher about the potential for any changes to the uniform in Kansas City.

“If history holds true with the Hunt family, you’re not going to see many changes to the uniform — nor would I argue for them, by the way,” Donovan said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “One of the things that makes our brand equity not unique but valuable is that we’re one of the very few that stuck to that tradition and honor that tradition.”

The biggest difference to the Chiefs’ uniforms lately really wasn’t much of a change. They added their logo celebrating their 60th season as a small helmet decal during the 2019 season. Team history is one of the things that has long inspired this fanbase. They also wore the NFL 100 logo in 2019, like every other team across the league.

“You get into the Thursday night color debate and you’re going to get strong opinions from a lot of different views on that,” Donovan continued. “I actually like what we’ve done with the Thursday night games. I like the all-white [look]. I like the all-red. We’ve done some subtle things with socks to create our own take on it. I like that.

“I love some of the other teams’ jerseys and uniforms. I don’t like some of the other jerseys and uniforms on Thursday night. When you talk specifically about, ‘Could you sell more (jerseys by wearing alternate uniforms or changing the base uniform)?’ we have a lot of jerseys for sale that we don’t necessarily wear on the field: black jerseys, camo jerseys, red jerseys, white jerseys. There are a bunch of different color feels to that.”

As for alternate uniforms, the team periodically wears red-on-red and white-on-white color combinations, usually during big primetime matchups or Thursday night football. They wore their typical home red uniforms in Super Bowl LIV as the designated home team.

There’s likely an argument to be made that Kansas City could rope in some new fans and make some quick cash from jersey sales with a uniform change. The reality is that changing the uniform significantly would be a blemish to a franchise steeped in tradition.

“I think it’s more important to us from a brand standpoint,” Donovan said, “that we’re traditional.”

Watch: Tampa Bay Buccaneers reveal new uniforms

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers unveiled new uniforms for the 2020 season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping Tom Brady will bring a winning feeling to the team. The G.O.A.T. and his teammates will be wearing new-look uniforms in 2020.

The Bucs revealed their new threads via a Twitter video on Tuesday. What do you think?

Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Ed Glazer said in a statement: “This new but familiar look is a direct result of the valuable feedback we received from our fans. We are excited to return to our classic Super Bowl era uniforms while also introducing a sleek Color Rush uniform that showcases our signature pewter in a new and dramatic way. The refreshed classic design of our home and away combinations bridges our past with our exciting new future, and we are confident it will resonate with our fans.”

And in true Bucs’ fashion, they had to add in a disclaimer.

Per the team’s site:

The font for the jersey numbers is the same one used from 1997-2013, as well, and the helmet will once again feature a black facemask. There will also be a brand new alternate uniform featuring pewter pants and jerseys that the Buccaneers anticipate becoming a fan favorite.

The new uniform also retains the modern flag-and-crossed-swords logo, while incorporating the original shade of red. The side of the flag on the helmet has been reduced to ensure the sword is visible on all helmet types used by players. The new uniforms also feature the modern ship design. The logotype mark has also been updated. The words Tampa Bay and the drop shadow are now in pewter, and the word Buccaneers is in the original darker red.

The stripes on the pewter and white pants of the new uniform will be just as they were in the previous era, alternating black, orange and red straight down the side of each leg. The jerseys are one solid color. The numbers on the jerseys – red on the white jersey and white on the red and pewter jerseys – are trimmed in black and orange, just as they were from 1997-2013.

Black and white socks will be worn with the home and away uniforms and the pewter socks will be worn with the all pewter look.

This fan-made throwback Broncos uniform is amazing

A graphic designer created a brilliant potential throwback uniform for the Broncos.

The NFL is considering changing its single-helmet rule in 2021, which could result in the return of several classic throwback uniforms. The Broncos’ throwback “D” logo, for example, doesn’t look quite the same on the current dark blue helmet as it does on the old, baby blue helmet.

If the league starts allowing teams to use more than one helmet in a season, Denver’s true throwback uniforms could return. With that possibility in mind, the graphic designers behind ThePick6.com created mock-ups of throwbacks for the Broncos and three other teams.

That’s pretty awesome.

Our friends at the D-Line Co. liked the idea but they tweaked the uniform to make the blue just a little darker. This also looks sharp:

The Broncos changed their primary jersey color from blue back to orange in 2012 but the team doesn’t have any immediate plans of changing the current logo. Denver does use the old “D” logo for a hybrid Color Rush throwback look, so it’s possible that a true throwback design could emerge in 2021 if the rule change goes through.
