‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is in the works, says Shooter McGavin actor, because ‘fans demand it’

It has to be better than that “other” golf movie sequel, right?

It has to be better than that “other” golf movie sequel, right?

The most iconic golf movie ever, “Caddyshack,” was followed up by the horrific “Caddyshack II,” so here’s hoping “Happy Gilmore 2” does right by the original.

Christopher McDonald, the actor who portrayed Happy’s nemesis Shooter McGavin in the 1996 release Happy Gilmore, spilled the beans about the follow-up when he joined Ken Carman on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland.

“Here’s a quick intel,” McDonald said. “I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago and he says to me ‘McDonald. You’re going to love this.’ I said ‘What?’ And he says ‘How about that?’ and he shows me a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

He then joked that maybe the radio producers should cut that out of the interview because “I don’t want to be a liar,” he said, but added that Sandler “did show me that and I said that would be awesome. It’s in the works. Fans demand it.”

McDonald is active in pro-am and charity tournaments and said his handicap is “probably 12 or 13 but I used to be about a 7.”

Where does he rank the Shooter McGavin role?

“I’ve had some favorite roles. I gotta say it’s top 3.”

“You’re a beloved character,” said Carman.

“People loved to hate the Shooter. I love that.,” McDonald said.

McDonald was in Cleveland for a meet-and-greet at the minor league hockey Cleveland Monsters, where the fan giveaway is a Shooter McGavin bobblehead.

Deadline reported that the movie will be made for Netflix, but added that niether the streaming service nor Adam Sandler were available for comment.

There is no announced release date for “Happy Gilmore 2.”

Adam Sandler paid tribute to Carl Weathers (AKA Happy Gilmore’s Chubbs) in a heartfelt post

A beautiful tribute from the Happy Gilmore co-star.

There will be so many roles we’ll remember the late Carl Weathers for, from Apollo Creed in the Rocky series to Greef Karga in The Mandalorian.

But there’s a whole generation that will remember him as one-handed Chubbs Peterson, the former pro golfer who helps the titular Happy Gilmore go from hockey star to winner on the links.

Adam Sandler — who wrote and starred in the movie — delivered a beautiful, heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday after news broke of the actor’s death, calling him a “great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete” and so much more:

Carl Weathers, known for roles such as Chubbs in ‘Happy Gilmore,’ has died at 76

Rest in peace, Carl.

Carl Weathers, known for roles such as Apollo Creed in “Rocky,” Chubbs Peterson in “Happy Gilmore” and Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian,” has died at the age of 76.

Weathers’ death was confirmed Friday by his family to Deadline and by his manager to The Associated Press.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, Feb. 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Chubbs is one of the best characters from a golf movie off all time, so it’s no surprise to see a huge reaction from golf Twitter.

Adam Sandler proves he’s Hollywood’s best point guard (again!) in hoops footage before Arizona game

Fans LOVE IT when they see Adam Sandler hoops highlights.

Anytime Adam Sandler hits the court to play hoops, you know you’re going to see some magic.

That was the case on Thursday, when the actor took to the court before Arizona hosted Colorado on Thursday — he played ball with some of the managers there and looked great.

The highlights are pretty awesome. There’s a no-look pass that didn’t end in a hoop, and then an up and under in which Sandler kind of just tosses the rock up behind his head and it goes in beautifully.

If you’re looking for Hollywood’s best point guard, you’ve found it. Here’s the footage:

Adam Sandler delightfully reprised his Waterboy character to promote Henry Winker’s new memoir

Bobby Boucher is back … kind of!

Adam Sandler remains one of the most beloved funny people of his generation, and he broke out one of his most notable characters to wish actor Henry Winkler well on the release of his new memoir, Being Henry: The Fonz . . . and Beyond.

Sandler and Winkler famously starred alongside each other in the 1998 football comedy The Waterboy, and the former briefly reprised his role of Bobby Boucher to encourage his followers to buy Winkler’s new book.

Mama would be proud to hear Boucher’s voice again, as this is the kind of delightful throwback that makes you want to put on The Waterboy as soon as possible.

It’s hilarious to hear Sandler say Winkler’s “Mr. Coach Kline” name again after all these years, and it’s hard not to want to go get yourself the most refreshing bottle of water possible and check out Winkler’s new memoir.

Look, if this prompts Sander to play Boucher again in a Waterboy sequel, we’re all for it. Even then, this is just another wonderful reminder of why we love the Sandman so much.

Bryan Bresee wears ‘The Waterboy’ Halloween costume to Saints team meeting

Bryan Bresee was caught wearing a Halloween costume from ‘The Waterboy’ to a recent Saints team meeting. Maybe he can channel Bobby Boucher’s knack for big plays:

Now that’s funny. New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee may have had to go experience some light rookie hazing at a recent team meeting — wear he was wearing a Halloween costume inspired by the Adam Sandler classic “The Waterboy,” as seen in a photo shared by his veteran teammate Malcolm Roach.

But we can’t rule out the possibility that Bresee did this of his own free will. Maybe he just felt like throwing on Bobby Boucher’s No. 9 South Central Louisiana State Mud Dogs jersey, along with a way-too-small novelty Saints helmet and old-school mustard-yellow pants while toting a pack of water bottles around the team facility? Stranger things have happened.

Times are tough for the Saints. They’ve lost four of their last five games and a lot of questions are being asked about whether the team has the leadership in place to get them out of a jam like this. But it’s good to see Bresee and his teammates aren’t dispiriting while making time for hijinks like this. He’s got a long career ahead of them and memories like this ought to be looked back on fondly. Maybe he can channel some of Boucher’s playmaking ability on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Adam Sandler congratulates the real-life Happy Gilmore on committing to Ball State golf

Yes, there’s a real Happy Gilmore. And yes, he’s very good at golf.

Happy Gilmore is leaving the big screen and joining the putting greens. At least, if you’re a fan of Ball State men’s golf.

We’re not talking about the 1996 film of the same name, though. We’re talking about the high school golfer turned media sensation who announced his commitment to play college golf for the Cardinals on Friday.

Adam Sandler, who plays the titular character in the comedy about a hockey player turned golf star, offered his congratulations to the real-life Gilmore on his commitment in a tweet that is sure to warm your heart if you’re a fan of the movie.

Gilmore’s response was even better.

Gilmore — a Bloomington, Indiana, native whose legal name is actually Landon James Gilmore — earned the nickname “Happy” after winning a long-drive contest at the age of nine. Pretty easy to see how they may have put that one together.

He went viral in May 2022 while trying to qualify for the U.S. Open as an amateur. But while he may have a memeable name, he can also play. Gilmore ranks inside the top 500 of the junior boys’ amateur rankings, and he shot a 66 at U.S. Open qualifying.

But he’s also never played hockey in his life, so just don’t be expecting any slapshots at the tee.

Happy Gilmore’s Shooter McGavin, aka actor Christopher McDonald, invades 2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open

Shooter McGavin made an appearance in Houston.

HOUSTON – Real estate is one of Shooter McGavin’s hobbies. So is golf.

That’s why it wasn’t a surprise to see Shooter at the 2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open on Thursday. And yes, we’re talking about that Shooter McGavin, the one from “Happy Gilmore.”

Actor Christopher McDonald, who portrays Shooter McGavin, was on hand Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course during the first round of the Houston Open. McDonald signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans. He even got pranked by Tony Finau on the first tee, as Finau mimicked as if he was going to do the Happy Gilmore swing.

Had Finau gone through with it, Shooter may have tried to get him kicked off the Tour.

“(Tony) just killed the ball when I was out there,” McDonald told Golfweek. “He’s a big favorite of mine, a great guy.”

No matter where McDonald goes, Shooter McGavin’s persona follows him. He has become the friendly villain in the golf community since the movie debuted in 1996, and portraying the Shooter role is something that changed McDonald’s life.

“I love being an ambassador for this movie because it has been 26 years, and so it’s multi-generational,” McDonald said. “And I had people tell me when they watch it, they watch it with their grandkids, and whenever it pops up on television, they just kind of have to sit down and watch and have a good laugh. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for me because I get invited to places like the Houston Open.”

The first 5,000 fans at Thursday’s first round got a Shooter McGavin bobble head, and many of those bobble heads ended up signed by Shooter himself. And no one had to go to the ninth green at 9 o’clock to make it happen.

Although Shooter’s last Tour Championship appearance was in 1996 when he blew a big lead to Happy Gilmore, he remains a big fan of golf. McDonald said he has become an even bigger fan in the past 10 years, and it’s in big part to how much it has grown on television. That is, as long as TV towers aren’t collapsing on the green.

McDonald and Adam Sandler, who played Happy Gilmore, remain in touch, even seeing each other a couple weeks before the Houston Open. On the 25th anniversary of the movie last year, Sandler posted a video on Twitter of him recreating the swing.

Shortly after, McDonald’s publicist contacted McDonald and told him about Sandler’s video. He responded quickly.

On Thursday, the impact and fandom McDonald has sprouted in golf fans over the past quarter century were apparent. Those young and old were lined up to meet him, many times saying catch phrases from the movie when they finally got to meet him.

It remains apparent that even after all these years. It’s still Shooter’s tour.

“I have nothing but respect for his great game of golf, and these guys are phenomenally talented,” McDonald said. “So it’s a treat for me to be right up close and personal.”

The ‘Uncut Gems’ creators are making another Adam Sandler movie, and it’s (likely) about sports card-collecting

THIS IS HOW WE WIN.

If you liked Adam Sandler’s role in “Uncut Gems” and want to see him in a similar role again, you may not have to wait too long.

During his press tour for “Hustle” on Netflix, the actor confirmed that he would work on another project involving Josh and Benny Safdie. The two brothers directed him in “Uncut Gems” and he won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

Sandler told Vanity Fair that the plan was to start filming in late winter, and he also revealed that he expects this movie to also be as “intense” as “Uncut Gems” (which is not surprising if you’ve seen “Good Time” or other films by the Safdie Brothers).

While there are not many other known details about the project, we learned a bit more this afternoon (via Deadline):

“Netflix has now officially boarded the untitled feature, which is currently in development at the streamer. Sandler is attached to star with the Safdies writing, directing and producing.

Netflix would not confirm any other details, but sources say the hope is to shoot the project in the second quarter of 2023, which would likely make it Sandler’s next project. One insider close to the project said that start date is TBD as the siblings are still putting finishing touches on the script.

The streamer would also not confirm plot details, though several sources say it is likely set in the world of high-end card collecting.”

Although still unconfirmed, this is definitely a very exciting development!
