TV, commentators set for Georgia-UMass game

The Georgia Bulldogs host the UMass Minutemen at 12:45 p.m. ET. Where can you watch the game?

The No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs play the UMass Minutemen at 12:45 p.m. ET on Saturday in Athens, Georgia. The Georgia-UMass game will be televised on SEC Network.

The television commentators for the Georgia-UMass game are Dave Neal, Max Starks, Ashley ShahAhmadi.

Georgia is 8-2 (6-2 SEC) and . Georgia needs to win to stay alive in the SEC title race and to remain in control of its College Football Playoff destiny.

UMass is 2-8 lost in overtime to Liberty, 35-34, last week. After the loss, UMass fired head coach Don Brown. The Minutemen will have Shane Montgomery serve as their interim head coach.

“Heard the unfortunate news about (recently fired UMass head coach) Don Brown just recently, and I know Shane (Montgomery, interim head coach) from the past and recruited together on the road and been around Shane before. He’s a tremendous coach, and we look forward to preparing for this game,” said Georgia coach Kirby Smart on Montgomery’s firing.

UMass is without starting quarterback Taisun Phommachanh. In his place, quarterback AJ Hairston played well in the Minutemen’s overtime loss to Liberty.

Georgia is favored by over 40 points against UMass. The Bulldogs finally have an easy game after finishing their SEC schedule. Georgia has won 29 straight games at Sanford Stadium.

After the UMass game, Georgia plays against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday, Nov. 29.

UMass fires head coach days before playing Georgia

UMass parts ways with its head coach before the Georgia game in what is not exactly ideal timing.

The University of Massachusetts has parted ways with head coach Don Brown ahead of their upcoming matchup against Georgia.

The Georgia Bulldogs kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive with a commanding 31-17 win over Tennessee in primetime last weekend, wrapping up their conference schedule. Now, they shift focus to a non-conference game against UMass. Offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery will serve as UMass’ offensive coordinator following Brown’s dismissal on Monday.

Don Brown began his coaching career in 1982 at Dartmouth and held various defensive coordinator roles at Northeast programs like Yale, Brown, and UMass, where he first joined in 1998. He became Northeastern’s head coach in 2000, staying until 2003, and later led UMass from 2004 to 2008. Brown also worked as a defensive coordinator at Maryland, UConn, Boston College, and Michigan before returning to UMass as head coach in 2022.

Despite an overall head coaching record of 101-71, UMass’s 2-8 start this season led to Brown’s dismissal during his second stint with the program. UMass has already faced two SEC opponents this year, Missouri and Mississippi State, and will now prepare to take on Georgia.

The Minutemen are coming off a heartbreaking loss to Liberty, where they led 20-7 at halftime but ultimately lost in overtime. The program will also begin its search for a new head coach.

Ohio State football offers in-state running back

Ohio State offers in-state running back #GoBucks

The Ohio State football high school camps are in full swing and these camps provide the perfect opportunity to identify talent and offer a scholarship on the spot, which was the case for in-state running back, Nino Hill.

The three-star prospect in the class of 2025 from Canton McKinley looks to be the ideal addition to a recruiting backfield that already includes four-star back, Bo Jackson. Hill stands at 6-feet and 185-pounds and could be the perfect lightning to Jackson’s thunder in the class of 2025.

The physical runner has earned a few offers including some smaller schools at the FBS level including UMASS, but Ohio State will likely have to compete with Wisconsin as he has already visited that campus a few times. With that said, there has been no news in regard to an offer from Wisconsin, but that will likely come this summer as his recruitment picks up steam.

Former Tiger announces new transfer destination

Former Tiger Paul Tchio has announced where he will play football next season.

After transferring from Clemson to Georgia Tech, a former Tiger was back in the transfer portal and has announced where he will be playing football next season.

Paul Tchio took to social media Wednesday to announce that he is transferring to UMass to continue his football career. He will look for more opportunities and work toward earning a start position Minutemen.

Tchio is a former four-star recruit out of Milton (Ga.) High School, who appeared in 14 games and made one start with the Tigers. According to 247Sports rankings, Tchio was the No.3 guard and the No.96 overall player in the 2020 class.

Former Clemson wide receiver announces transfer destination

A former Clemson wide receiver is heading to UMass.

Another former Tiger in the transfer portal has announced where he will take his talents next season.

Wide receiver Frank Ladson Jr. took to social media to announce that he is transferring to play football at UMass. After two years with the Miami Hurricanes, Ladson is once again on the move.

The former Tiger didn’t record a catch in 2023 after having a solid season in 2022. In 2022, he recorded 27 catches for 298 yards. He must have fallen out of favor this past season, and the result is a new school for the former four-star recruit.

Ladson will look to make an impact at UMass, where opportunities should be more prevalent.

Michigan State football offers UMass DB graduate transfer Josh Wallace

MSU has extended an offer to one of the top cornerbacks in the transfer portal

Michigan State is still sifting through the transfer portal, looking to make additions to several positions on the roster. The latest offer the Spartans have made is to Josh Wallace, a graduate transfer from the University of Massachusetts.

In his four years at UMass, Wallace has put up an impressive stat line, recording 138 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions and 24 pass defends.

Independents Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

College Football News Independent preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

The world of the independent college football programs will soon get a tad smaller with Liberty and New Mexico State off to Conference USA in 2023, BYU diving into the Big 12, and Notre Dame joining …

Maybe not yet on the Fighting Irish, but before the independents start finding homes in desperate conferences looking for members, they almost all once again have interesting schedules.

Notre Dame and BYU will make the most noise – as always – with so many high-profile showdowns, but Army could be the most interesting independent. If it can beat Coastal Carolina on the road to start the season, look out. At Wake Forest and the date against Air Force in Arlington, Texas are the only times the Knights should be the underdog.

BYU and Notre Dame play each other in Las Vegas, UMass and New Mexico State play each other, Army plays UConn and UMass, and Liberty plays UConn, UMass, and New Mexico State. And UConn and UMass go at it.

There’s obviously no conference championship to play for, so …

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022

Let’s just see if we can kickstart this thing.

The UMass experience up at the FBS level hasn’t exactly been a smashing success.

It won one game last year, it didn’t win any of the four in 2020, and it won one game in 2019. To hammer this home even more, since making the move up in 2012, the program has won 18 games – just four more than Georgia did all of last year.

But it’s not like this is one of those programs that hasn’t won anything since the 1950s. There was a winning season in 2010, and this was an FCS powerhouse as recently as the mid-2000s, with head coach Don Brown leading the way to one national title appearance in 2006 and back into the playoffs in 2007.

Brown left in 2009 to become one of the top defensive coordinators in college football, working his way up to the Michigan gig before trying to turn around the Arizona D last year.

Now the when-the-season-starts 67-year-old is back to try to give UMass football something it can build on. There’s experience to work with, and there are plenty of winnable games on the schedule if the team is merely competent.

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022: Offense

The offense hasn’t been great at that scoring thing. It averaged only 16 points and 300 yards per game. There wasn’t any passing game, it was painfully inefficient, but there was a ground attack at times and there were slivers of light here and there. The biggest positive was that it wasn’t as bad as the defense.

Nine starters are expected to be back, and it should all revolve around that ground game early on.

The offensive line is hardly a killer, but it wasn’t awful in pass protection and it cranked out enough of a push to give the offense something to rely on. The line will be a relative strength as it paves the way for Ellis Merriweather, a tough back who pounded away for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns averaging over five yards per carry. He’s the star of the show, but …

UMass has to be able to throw at least a little bit. Four different Minutemen threw at least nine passes with sophomore Brady Olson getting the most work. He’s the odds-on favorite to get back the gig, but it’s an open fight with Zamar Wise and Garrett Dzuro – all three failed to hit 50% of their passes.

The receiving corps gets a slew of parts back. Rico Arnold led the way with only 27 catches for 461 yards and three scores, but he averaged over 17 yards per grab. He’s the No. 1 target, but TE Josiah Johnson and veteran receiver Jermaine Johnson will will be a bigger part of the fun.

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022: Defense

The defense needs to be night-and-day better, and it should be under Don Brown and the new coaching staff. UMass allowed 485 yards and a nation-high 43 points per game. There weren’t enough takeaways – the D picked off just 2 passes – and only two teams were worse at stopping offenses on third downs.

With seven starters back, and – again – with Brown taking over, at least this group will be far more aggressive and disruptive. That starts with …

There has to be a pass rush. The Minutemen only came up with 11 sacks and 45 tackles for loss with 310-pound Billy Wooden doing the heavy lifting. He led the team with eight tackles for loss, but now he’ll be working more on the nose as the new parts take care of the pass rush.

Marcus Bradley is coming in from Vanderbilt and Marcus Cushnie is a former Alabama A&M and Florida State backup who’ll get his shot. These two will go along with Uchenna Ezewike, who led the team with 2.5 sacks.

The top tacklers are back. It’s a decent-sized group that at least cranked up the stops – now everyone has to make more big plays. Gerrell Johnson led the team with 80 tackles, Da’Shon Rice made 76 stops in the middle, and in all, 23 of the top 26 tacklers were underclassmen.

Junior Donte Lindsay is a strong open field tackler from his safety spot, but there have to be more plays on the ball. Josh Wallace is the top returning corner with 12 broken up passes, but he spent too much time making tackles.
