UMass vs Maine Game Preview

Why Maine Will Win

UMass is trying to get through the season.

Head coach Walt Bell was let go a few weeks ago, the team has one win – it came over a depleted UConn team – and it’s struggling in too many areas.

The Huskies just lost to Rhode Island 35-22. Maine beat the Rams a few weeks ago 45-24.

The Maine offensive line is decent at keeping defenses out of the backfield, the offense has picked it up over the second half of the season, and the team should be able to win the battle up front on both sides. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why UMass Will Win

Maine doesn’t do much to get into the backfield.

There’s no pass rush to worry about, the secondary is sketchy, and the offense doesn’t go on long, drawn out marches.

For all of the problems UMass has, it’s not bad at slowing things down and controlling the clock. The passing game wasn’t all that bad in the loss to Rhode Island, Ellis Merriweather ran for 118 yards and a score, and the offense should be able to move a bit against the porous Maine D that allows close to 400 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

UMass just can’t seem to catch the right breaks at the right times.

The offense going put enough points on the board in the second half against Rhode Island, and now it’s getting a Maine team that’s a wee bit of the opposite. It’s not playing great, but it’s finding ways to get wins helped by the defense holding up just enough.

UMass vs Rhode Island Game Preview

Why Rhode Island Will Win

The UMass defense is a problem.

It’s been struggling all season long, and the offense has been the biggest issue to overcome, but the D has been destroyed over the last two weeks allowing 121 points.

But that was against Florida State and Liberty. Rhode Island doesn’t have that type of talent, but the passing game is able to bomb away big and the defense is usually able to take care of the rest.

Former Maryland QB Kasim Hill isn’t all that accurate and the O has struggled lately, but the attack is hitting close to 14 yards per pass and should hit just enough deep shots to open things up.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why UMass Will Win

Rhode Island can’t score.

UMass might have a power outage, but it’s playing a slew of decent FBS teams. The Rams scored seven points in back-to-back games against Towson and Villanova, and they couldn’t keep up in a 21-point loss to Maine.

For all of the problems UMass is having, the running gnat hasn’t been bad over the last few weeks – it ran for 210 yards on Florida State – and Rhode Island doesn’t have the type of defense that can get into the backfield on a regular basis.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

At the very least, UMass will hold on to the ball enough to keep this from getting out of hand. The problem will be the big plays.

Rhode Island will give up over 200 yards on the ground, but it’ll make up for it with a few big scoring plays and lightning strikes.

Liberty vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

What happened to Liberty?

It’s still good, but it isn’t the consistently amazing offensive show of last year, even though almost all of the parts are back.

6-2 is hardly bad, but the offense hasn’t hit 400 yards in either of the last two games, the running game wasn’t there against North Texas, and UMass has to  try to keep things moving enough to hold up.

The Flame defense couldn’t slow down the North Texas running game, the pass defense has allowed over 200 yards in each of the last three games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty is just fine.

It might not be quite as sharp and dominant as it was last year, but it’s playing well enough to pull against a UMass defense that’s been ripped up against the run on a regular basis.

The Minutemen might have pushed the offense against UConn, and it had a good game earlier in the year against Eastern Michigan, but they’re inconsistent and the running game will struggle to get anything consistently moving.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty has been underwhelming over the last few weeks on the road, but it’s back at home, the UMass offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last four games, and this is when everything starts to look back to how it’s supposed to be.

UMass vs Florida State Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The UMass running game is having its moments.

The team is rested after getting two weeks off following the win over UConn, running for 247 yards a few weeks after the O cranked up over 500 yards against Eastern Michigan.

It’s not like Florida State can take anyone lightly – it’s still smarting from the loss to Jacksonville State earlier in the year – but this is the breather between going to North Carolina and getting Clemson next week. The full and undivided attention probably won’t be there, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida State Will Win

The Florida State running game has settled in.

It wasn’t good enough over the first part of the season, but it went for over 200 yards in each of the last three games with 247 against Syracuse and 238 against North Carolina in their first two wins of the season.

The Noles will run for at least 250 yards against the UMass defensive front. That all ties into the other big key for them over the last two weeks – they’re converting on third down conversions. That was a problem in the three losses after the fight with Notre Dame.

The UMass defense is the second-worst in the nation in third down stops.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UMass will get the offense working a little bit to make this interesting for a about 20 minutes, but the Florida State running game will start working right away and will stay effective on the way to – finally – an easy win.

12 points. That’s how many the Minutemen scored in the rough four game season. It’s a program in a constant state of transition, the transfer portal is playing a big role in trying to get things going in the third year under Walt Bell, and there’s nowhere to go but up after averaging just 188 yards and three points per game.

The passing game tried out just about everyone possible – with four quarterbacks throwing at least nine passes – but the team might finally have the guy to settle the gig with Tyler Lytle coming in from Colorado. Garrett Dzuro is back after leading the team with 215 passing yards and two picks – he completed just 42% of his passes.

Leading receiver Samuel Emilus is gone through the transfer portal, and the receiving corps loses four other parts to other places. However, Jermaine “OC” Johnson is back after catching 14 passes for 96 yards, and tight end and backup quarterback Josiah Johnson returns along with Taylor Edwards. There’s enough in place to get a big more out of a midrange passing game.

The offensive line didn’t generate a thing for the ground game and struggled in pass protection, but there’s excellent size and enough bulk to at least try to get more physical. Three starters are back in the interior, and help is coming from the transfer portal, but the backs have to rise up.

Four are leaving through the transfer portal, but the Minutemen are bringing in Kay’Ron Adams from Rutgers to go along with 6-2, 227-pound former JUCO transfer Ellis Merriweather – the only RB to gain more than seven yards – running 42 times for 115 yards.

UMass Minutemen Football Schedule Analysis: The Minutemen should be able to come up with a few wins with dates against Rhode Island, Maine and New Mexico State, but they’ll go through a whole lot of humping to get there. They’ll likely be double-digit underdogs in each of the first five games before getting UConn at home.

UMass Minutemen Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: UMass pulls off a shocker against either Eastern Michigan or Toledo, beats UConn, and takes care of three of its last four games for a five-wins season.

UMass Minutemen Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: It’s an ugly first five games before losing to UConn at home. Every games a blowout loss on the way to an 0-8 start before losing to either Rhode Island or Maine, and the loss to New Mexico State closes out the rough season with a clunker.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: UMass Minutemen Offense 3 Things To Know

Head coach Walt Bell is about offense. The former offensive coordinator at Florida State, Maryland and Arkansas State has a brutal task to try getting the UMass football program going, and it starts with being able to move the ball.

The O averaged fewer than 300 yards and 20 touchdown per game with no downfield passing game whatsoever and without enough of a ground attack to make up for it. Now it has to move on without its best offensive star.

Cam Roberson was the second-leading rusher with 355 yards and two scores, but now he’s likely being moved to wide receiver. JUCO transfer Ellis Merriweather is a 6-1, 220-pounder who’s built to carry the workload along with 225-pound senior Gilberto Torres.

[jwplayer ipD5QeqP]

Four starters are expected to return back to a line that wasn’t miserable in pass protection, but didn’t do enough for the ground game. 6-7, 300-pound senior Larnel Coleman is a keeper at left tackles, and there’s decent size across the board.

The passing game needs to be able to rely on a steady quarterback after four got a shot last year. 6-4, 215-pound JUCO transfer Kyle Lindquist was brought in to settle everything down, but 5-8, 170-pound Andrew Brito is back after seeing time throughout last season, throwing for 830 yards and seven scores with six picks.

Leading yardage receiver Zak Simon returns after catching 32 passes for 355 yards and two scores. Brennon Dingle is transferring to UTSA, Jessie Britt is transferring to Duquesne, and top tight end Kyle Horn is bolting.

However, 5-10, 165-pound sophomore Jermaine Johnson is back after leading the team with 37 grabs – he’s a short-range target and 6-1, 200-pound junior Samuel Emilus brings a little bulk – he caught 27 passes.
