UFC on ESPN+ 39 results: Greg Hardy drops, stops Maurice Green for TKO

Former NFL standout Greg Hardy continued to show improvements in his MMA game when he beat Maurice Greene at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

Former NFL standout [autotag]Greg Hardy[/autotag] continued to show improvements in his MMA game Saturday when he beat [autotag]Maurice Greene[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

Hardy’s (7-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) power proved once again to be an X factor in his favor, because he dropped Greene (9-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) and subsequently finished the fight by TKO at the 1:12 mark of Round 2. It was the first time in Hardy’s career that he’s earned a stoppage outside of the opening frame.

The heavyweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN+ 39 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Hardy looked to apply pressure early and landed a big right hand that caused Greene to back up. Hardy swarmed with punches near the fence then picked up Green’s leg and pulled him to the mat. He established top control, where he worked away with chipping shots and took some minutes off the clock before Greene worked his way back to the feet. They settled into a striking rhythm or the remainder of the round, with Greene moving around the outside and Hardy getting inside in attempt to land.

In the second round, Hardy started to find his range. He landed a stiff lead right hand that dropped Greene to the canvas, and he jumped on top. Greene did his best to avoid the follow-up blows, but Hardy was relentless with the attack and forced referee Herb Dean to step in.

With the win, Hardy has now suffered just one defeat in his past four fights. He was excited about the performance after the fact.

“Get in, get out and get it,” Hardy said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I will do it again next week.”

UFC on ESPN+ 39 video: Alexander Hernandez becomes first to stop Chris Gruetzemacher with strikes

Alexander Hernandez got back in the win column in a big way at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

[autotag]Alexander Hernandez[/autotag] got back in the win column in a big way Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

After dropping two of his past three fights, Hernandez (12-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) was in need of a good performance against Chris Gruetzemacher (14-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC) in order to prove the excitement about his potential at lightweight was not misguided.

Hernandez very much did that when he starched Gruetzemacher with some heavy shots for a first-round TKO at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streamed on ESPN+.

A big head kick from Hernandez spelled the beginning of the end, then some big punches dropped Gruetzemacher for the finish at the 1:46 mark of Round 1.

Watch the replay of Hernandez’s finish below (via Twitter):

“I’ve defeated myself three times in that cage, two times in the UFC, and I’m sick of it,” Hernandez said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I’m here now. I feel like I just made my UFC debut. I feel incredible.”

Hernandez did not layout a timeline for his next fight, but after being the first person to ever stop Gruetzemacher with strikes, he said he’s excited for the future.

UFC on ESPN+ 39 video: Adrian Yanez delivers textbook head kick KO in debut

Adrian Yanez wanted a win in his UFC debut for more reasons than one Saturday.

[autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] wanted a win in his UFC debut for more reasons than one Saturday.

He delivered with authority with a memorable start to his promotional tenure. Yanez (12-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) took out Victor Rodriguez (7-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a picture-perfect head kick knockout in the first round.

Afterward, Yanez said the win was just as much about honoring the memory of his father, who died in 2016 – and to whom he promised he’d one day reach the UFC.

Yanez’s striking was on point in his official UFC debut after winning a shot on Dana White’s Contender Series earlier this year. Most everything he hit Rodriguez with seemed to bounce his head back. But when Rodriguez tried to find some room to operate against the fence and moved to the right, Yanez delivered a kick right to the jaw that put his lights out a little past the midway point of the opening frame.

Check out the highlight-reel finish below.

UFC on ESPN+ 39 video: Dustin Jacoby thrashes Justin Ledet in octagon return

Dustin Jacoby’s long road back to the UFC finally paid off when he got his first win inside the octagon at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

[autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag]’s long road back to the UFC finally paid off Saturday when he got his first win inside the octagon at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

After going 0-2 with the promotion in 2011-2012, Jacoby (12-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was cut from the roster. It set up a scattered run in MMA, as well as a move over to kickboxing, where he worked well. He needed to win a fight on Dana White’s Contender Series to get back, but it finally happened.

Jacoby wasn’t content with simply returning to the big stage, though. He delivered, completely destroying [autotag]Justin Ledet[/autotag] (9-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in a one-sided light heavyweight fight, which took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streamed on ESPN+.

After some leg kicks ruined Ledet’s ability to stay upright, Jacoby pounced on his foe and landed a brutal pair of right hands that ended the fight by TKO at the 2:38 mark of Round 1.

Watch the highlight of the finish below (via Twitter):

It took nine years to the weekend from the time Jacoby first stepped foot in the octagon (Oct. 29, 2011) to become a UFC winner. Naturally, he was filled with emotion afterward.

“I’m one of the best strikers in the world, and I’m so happy,” Jacoby said during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “Nine years: It was a long road back.”
