Anderson Silva releases statement following TKO loss at UFC on ESPN+ 39

Anderson Silva issues statement on most recent defeat.

It seems Saturday was the last time [autotag]Anderson Silva[/autotag] stepped in the octagon.

The former UFC middleweight champion suffered a TKO loss to Uriah Hall (16-9 MMA, 9-7 UFC) in the fourth round of the UFC on ESPN+ 39 main event in Las Vegas. It was his third consecutive defeat and the last time Silva (34-11 MMA, 17-7 UFC) fought in the UFC, at least according to UFC president Dana White.

Sunday, Silva released a statement on his defeat on his Instagram. And though the Brazilian didn’t say he’s retiring, he did reminisce on his storied run in MMA.

Good morning, my people, today is a very different day for a simple reason, and I wanted to thank you all these years with your cheerleading!
I want to thank the God for granting me the gift of the fight! Thank you my people for all understanding, for all your support and for all your amazing moments that we live in this sport together! _
I hope I left it in memory and in the heart of each of you a little of who I am, that you can overcome difficulties, every second of uncertainty and to overcome obstacles in your lives!”
Never think about giving up, as hard as things get at some point; know that I leave all my love, all my respect for you!”!
“Force and time always and God bless you all!” Thank you all, bless you, and bless you 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾.

Silva indicated the fight with Hall could be his last, but he has yet to announce his retirement officially. The 45-year-old has one fight left on his UFC contract and White was adamant he will not let Silva step back in the cage. The UFC president went as far as saying that it would be “disgusting” for any promoter or commission to sanction and host another fight for Silva.

“The Spider” is currently 1-7 with a no contest in his past nine UFC bouts. His lone victory was a decision win over Derek Brunson in 2017.

Dana White leaves door open for Khabib Nurmagomedov to return: ‘He’s still the champ’

UFC president Dana White said Khabib Nurmagomedov remains the UFC lightweight champion, and no interim title will be introduced, leaving the door open for his return.

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White said the door has been left wide open for [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] to return to the octagon when he confirmed the undefeated Russian remains in place as the UFC’s undisputed lightweight champion.

Talking to reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage after UFC on ESPN+ 39, White was asked to elaborate on earlier comments suggesting he thought Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) may return to the octagon in a bid to extend his perfect professional record to 30-0.

“Well, he didn’t say that he’ll fight, but he didn’t say no,” White said. “He’s considering the 30-0. His father wanted it and I think that he was super-emotional. (He) had the mumps, measles or whatever, broken toe, trained on a stationary bike for that fight, and then came in and fought, and he was super-emotional.”

Nurmagomedov said inside the octagon at UFC 254 that his decision to retire at 29-0 came as a result of a promise he had made to his mother following his father’s death in July. But White said that the UFC has left the door open for “The Eagle” to return and continue his title reign, should he wish to do so.

“He’s still the champ – there’s no vacant title open right now, or no interim title happening. He’s the champ and we’ll give him some time to figure out what he wants to do. … I feel pretty good (about it). He said he was going to talk with his mother.”

Dana White pays tribute to ‘one of the all-time greats’ after Anderson Silva’s final UFC fight

UFC president Dana White paid tribute to Anderson Silva, hailing the Brazilian as “one of the greatest of all-time” after his final fight in the octagon at UFC on ESPN+ 39.

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White paid tribute to former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Anderson Silva[/autotag] after confirming that the Brazilian had fought inside the octagon for the final time.

Speaking to reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage after the UFC on ESPN+ 39 event at the UFC Apex, White admitted that he didn’t feel happy with himself for allowing Silva to fight on and compete on Saturday night. But when asked about the Brazilian’s legacy with the promotion, he was full of praise for “The Spider.”

“He could do things to people that other people couldn’t,” he recalled. “He was almost impossible to touch. He would be just on the end of your punch – the leather might touch him just a little bit, – and he’d come back with a combination that would either knock you out, or almost knock you out.

“He used to do some fun stuff. What he did to Vitor Belfort when he fought Vitor. What he did to Rich Franklin. Chris Leben, at the time, was undefeated and had an iron chin. He came in and made Chris Leben look like he had no chin. What he did to Forrest Griffin when he went up to 205. The list just goes on with the incredible things. He had a messed-up rib (and) the Chael Sonnen fight goes the whole way and he submits him with just a couple of minutes left in the fifth round. Just legendary fights that Anderson Silva’s had here, when he was in his prime.”

[lawrence-related id=563356,563348,563212]

White said he’d read Silva’s comments about the UFC not feeling like a family since Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta departed the organization, but stated that negotiations between him and the Brazilian were never bad-tempered, and there was a certain way he had to do business with him when booking fights.

“Every time we would sit down to do a fight, there was just a process to it,” he explained. “It was never bad, it was never combative or any of that type of stuff. There was a process you had to go through with Anderson, and maybe that’s what he means when he said it hasn’t felt like family for him, because we haven’t gone through any processes lately. I don’t know, it was always a pleasure dealing with Anderson. It was never bad.”

As for Silva’s standing in the pantheon of UFC greats, White said “The Spider’s” influence and popularity during a huge growth period in the promotion’s history helped introduce the sport to countless fans, and fighters, around the world.

“He’s one of the greatest of all time (but) I don’t know if I could come up with a (ranking) number,” he said. “You’re going to see a lot of great talent coming (through) in the next five or six years. But Anderson Silva is one of the all-time greats.

“A lot of kids that would have played other sports became mixed martial artists from watching Anderson Silva and he had a massive impact on this company, in Brazil and other parts of the world.”
