Paige Bueckers went off for UConn in the second half and the internet loved it

Bueckers was unstoppable in the second half and overtime.

In potentially the college basketball game of the month, the UConn women’s team earned a spot in their 14th straight Final Four with a dramatic double overtime win over 1-seed NC State. The Huskies — which had essentially a home game in Bridgeport, CT — pulled away in the second extra period for the four-point victory, but it was a back-and-forth affair throughout.

Although several UConn players stood out in the win, it was sophomore guard Paige Bueckers that made the difference. Twenty-three of Buecker’s 27 points came in the second half as she shot a nearly-perfect 8-for-9 from the field after halftime.

The internet was overwhelmed with praise for the Minnesota native’s performance as she led her team to the Final Four in Minneapolis next weekend.

Best bets in the West Region of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Tournament

Who besides the Zags should you put your money on?

The West Region is largely thought to be top-seed Gonzaga’s to lose. The Bulldogs have been the best team in the country for most of the season, and after coming up short of a title so many times in the past, this year’s team led by Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren feels like the one that can get them over the hump.

Helping Gonzaga’s case is having maybe the least-regarded two-seed in the tournament in its bracket. Duke’s seeding shocked plenty who thought Tennessee should have gotten the nod, however the Blue Devils are still loaded with enough talent to give anyone trouble.

The real sneaky team to be aware of in this region is the Big 12 tourney runner-up Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are elite defensively and have a number of players they can go to for offense, led by Bryson Williams and Terrence Shannon.

Here’s a look at the best bets in the West Region, with odds via Tipico Sportsbook.

NC State got the No. 1 seed in women’s Bridgeport Region, then got stuck with UConn

Sheesh, this is a tough draw for the Wolfpack.

For the second straight season, the N.C. State women’s basketball team earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The ACC tournament champion is the top team in the Bridgeport Region, but they’ll have a major challenge in front of them as there’s a potential matchup with perennial powerhouse UConn looming on the horizon.

Bridgeport, Connecticut is about an hour and change away from UConn’s campus in Storrs, making it essentially a home game for the Huskies. Geno Auriemma’s squad went 25-5 this season, and dealt with the absence of superstar Paige Bueckers as she dealt with a knee injury.

While NC State fans weren’t very happy with the draw, it would make for a great matchup for neutral observers at home.

UConn clears Paige Bueckers to return just in time for March

The Huskies went 15-4 without the reigning national player of the year.

The reigning national player of the year, Paige Bueckers, has been cleared to return from injury for Friday’s game against St. John’s, UConn announced on Thursday.

Bueckers has missed 19 games since suffering an anterior tibial fracture and lateral meniscus tear on December 5 and undergoing surgery a week later.

She was averaging 21.2 points on 56% shooting, 5.5 rebounds and 6.2 assists through six games before the injury. UConn went 5-1 in those games, with the only loss coming to No. 1 South Carolina.

Bueckers’ return is much welcomed for a Huskies team that went 15-4 without her. Their five losses this season match their total number of losses over the last two seasons combined. A perennial national championship contender, UConn hasn’t won a title since a four-year streak from 2013-2016.

The Huskies have +750 odds to win it all this year, fourth-shortest behind South Carolina, Stanford and NC State.

After Friday’s game, UConn closes the regular season Sunday against Providence. Then comes the Big East Tournament. Already locked into the conference’s No. 1 seed, UConn will get a first-round bye and begin play on March 5.

Bad Beat: UConn pulls off miraculous win over Villanova but falls short of the cover

UConn -2.5 bettors were sooo close.

UConn should have lost Tuesday night’s game to Villanova. Then, they came back and should have covered a 2.5-point spread.

Instead, they won AND fell short of the cover.

Favored at home, the 21st-ranked Huskies trailed No. 8 Villanova by four points with under 40 seconds left to play. All ‘Nova had to do was not turn the ball over and knock down a few free throws.

That proved to be too much.

After a UConn turnover, Villanova guard Caleb Daniels missed the front end of a one-and-one, missing an opportunity to extend the Wildcats lead with 30 seconds left. UConn took advantage out of the ensuing timeout break, as forward Tyler Polley knocked down a clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point.

At this point, Villanova was sweating but still in the driver’s seat. Just don’t turn it ov…

OK, so this call was a bit controversial.

Villanova guard Collin Gillespie ran into a trap with 17 seconds left and a jump ball was called with the possession arrow in UConn’s favor. Many fans questioned the call.

Either way, it resulted in a Huskies possession and the go-ahead basket on an R.J. Cole layup.

And that’s where the bad beat comes in.

If you were a UConn -2.5 bettor, you were resigned to losing well before this moment. But then the Huskies were up one and there was a glimmer of hope.

On ‘Nova’s next possession, Gillespie drove into the lane for a go-ahead layup attempt but instead was called for a charge. That meant Villanova had to foul for a shot at the ball back, so they put UConn’s Andre Jackson on the free throw line with less than a second left and a chance at the backdoor cover.

The first free throw was good. The second missed.

Villanova +2.5 bettors were spared. UConn -145 moneyline bettors were ecstatic. UConn +2.5 bettors were left holding the bag.

Duck women’s basketball back into the AP Top 25 after 8-week hiatus

The Duck women’s basketball climbs back into the AP Top 25 at No. 19 after an 8-week hiatus.

Eight really was enough.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team is back in the Associated Press Top 25 after an eight-week hiatus. Kelly Graves’ team enters the poll at No. 19 thanks to some high-profile wins.

Last week consisted of victories over two previously Top 10 teams, a 68-66 overtime win over No. 7 Arizona and a 72-59 thrashing over No. 9 UConn. As a result, the Wildcats and Huskies each dropped down a spot to No. 8 and No. 10, respectively. Stanford at 14-3 overall is still the highest-ranked team in the conference as the Cardinal sit at No. 2.

Now fully healthy and the roster the Ducks envisioned coming into the season, they are on quite a roll, winners of fourth straight and in third place of the Pac-12 with a 3-1 record and 11-5 overall.

Oregon will get back at it with a busy week beginning with a makeup game against Utah, an 11 a.m. tip Jan. 26. After the Utes come calling, the Ducks will host UCLA Jan. 28 and USC Jan. 30. All of this week’s contests will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Butler’s adorable mascot dog road trip included visits with some similarly very good mascot pups

This is the best road trip with the best dogs.

Butler University’s live mascot, Blue IV, is on the road trip of his young pup life.

Thanks to men’s basketball games against Georgetown, Villanova, and UConn, Butler Blue hopped a flight from Indianapolis to the east coast for an adventure. Aptly dubbed the “Big Dawg Tour,” this trip serves multiple purposes.

First, there’s basketball! The obvious benefit is having a super cute dog mascot on hand for the men’s games, but it also serves to introduce Butler University to more regions and to connect alumni and future Bulldogs to their school.

“Big Dawgs Tour began during the 2013-14 season when Butler joined the Atlantic 10 as a way to introduce the university to new markets,” Blue’s handler Evan Krauss told For the Win.

Krauss — who arguably has the best job in the country — and Blue manage to do all of that, while also creating the most amazing social media content. They added a few bonus stops to meet both in-and-out-of-conference dog friends and pose with dog statues, in front of major monuments and more.
Blue met a grand total of three very good dogs, thanks in part to the robust live handler network. The handlers meet frequently over Zoom and met in person in 2018 when Colorado hosted the first live mascot conference in Boulder.
Let’s take a look at Blue IV’s journey.
