A meaningless Rams field goal with 4 seconds left led to an all-time bad beat for Niners bettors

This was BRUTAL.

Oh this is SO BRUTAL from Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay … and it made everyone wonder: Did he know the spread for his team’s Week 2 game against the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers?

Here’s the situation: The Rams were down 30-20 with four seconds left. There was no way a field goal would matter for Los Angeles at that point … yet for some reason, McVay lined the team up for a 38-yarder off the foot of Brett Maher.

It was up, it was good, and if you bet Niners -7.5 or -8.5, you lost an all-timer of a bad beat.

Oof:

UVA’s cheap rebound on a game-ending heave was one of the most unbelievable bad beats

With 0.1 on the clock!

Bad beats come in many forms, some more anticipated than others. As for the one that happened at the buzzer of Virginia’s game against Clemson on Tuesday, nobody could have seen that coming.

That’s because it happened at the buzzer — only it wasn’t the typical bad beat on a game-winning shot.

This bad beat involved a player’s rebounding prop, suggested hours earlier by Action Network analyst Sean Koerner on the Green Dot Daily! show. He predicted Virginia forward Ben Vander Plas would fall under 6.5 rebounds.

That pick was right up until the final tenth of a second when Vander Plas caught rebound No. 7 on a pointless half-court heave by Clemson.

[betwidget_tipico]

Koerner and everyone who tailed him felt that one in the gut.

What makes it worst is Vander Plas didn’t need to catch it. The clock still would have struck zero before the ball hit the ground had he let it go. But no player is passing on that opportunity to pad the ol’ stat sheet, so he caught it over the shoulder like a receiver in the end zone — almost like he knew the stakes of the rebound.

Koerner called it one of his worst beats.

Yeah, it’s pretty hard to top that.

Cincinnati’s garbage time run against Arizona is already one of the wildest backdoor covers this season

Cincy may have lost, but the Bearcats still pulled off one of the best comebacks in college (betting) history.

Arizona bettors watched a surefire win get snapped out of existence late Monday night as the No. 14 Wildcats defeated Cincinnati, 101-93, at the Maui Invitational.

The Bearcats closed as an 8.5-point underdog in Hawaii and trailed 101-83 with 1:34 remaining in regulation. Yes, you read that right. Cincy went on a 10-0 run over the last 94 seconds to pull off a stunning backdoor cover.

It’s an absolutely miserable way to lose a bet—and considering the majority of bettors were on Arizona, that misery was spread far and wide.

According to Action Network, 80 percent of the bets placed on the spread and 70 percent of the money wagered was on Arizona to cover. The Wildcats had numerous chances to hang on until giving up a deep three-pointer with 10 seconds left, killing whatever hope Arizona bettors had left.

Over the final 94 seconds Arizona missed a jumper, a layup and a three-pointer while Cincy grabbed three defensive boards and made three three-pointers.

That’s about as painful a bad beat as you’ll see all season. Absolute nightmare fuel.

TCU’s ‘hurry-up’ field goal keeps Horned Frogs’ playoff dreams alive with game-winner

TCU kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with this wild ending.

Jason Benetti was screaming, and so were we, along with anyone who bet on TCU, probably.

Down two points on the road to Baylor with 1:34 to play, the No. 4 Horned Frogs put together a nine-play drive that covered 45 yards, giving kicker Griffin Kell a chance to kick a game-winning field goal.

What created the chaos was that TCU burned all its timeouts. And instead of spiking the ball or running out of bounds to stop the clock on the play before the kick, the Horned Frogs ran the ball up the middle for two yards.

So, the clock just kept ticking away as TCU frantically ran onto the field to set up for a 40-yard game-winning field goal. And this wasn’t just any game-winner; TCU’s playoff hopes were at stake.

But it worked. I present to you, the hurry-up field goal:

TCU fans had a big reason to celebrate after that kick, but bettors who put money on TCU to cover did not.

The Horned Frogs were 2.5-point favorite. So, while they won and kept their playoff chances alive, they didn’t cover and caused bettors a whole lot of heartache.

According to DraftKings, one bettor put $50,000 on TCU to cover.

Bettors were enticed by TCU for several reasons. The Horned Frogs were undefeated, for starters, and were coming off an impressive 17-10 win over Texas. All of TCU’s wins this season were by at least three points or more. Additionally, Baylor was coming off an ugly 31-3 loss to Kansas State.

What put TCU in the position where it had to drive half the length of the field for a game-winning kick was a missed extra point kick in the third quarter, and then a failed two-point conversion on their final touchdown.

Bettors be damned, the hypno-toads are still undefeated and dancing toward the College Football Playoff.

NFL Week 10 betting recap: Direct your attention to Tua Tagovailoa for MVP consideration

Tua’s MVP odds are still just fourth-shortest.

Josh Allen entered this season as the unquestioned favorite to win the 2022 MVP award, but after another disastrous, turnover-filled game Sunday against the Vikings, his hold on that perception is steadily decreasing.

The favorites to win MVP at Tipico Sportsbook are Patrick Mahomes at +130 and Jalen Hurts at +250. Allen is third at +500.

But you know who should also be ahead of Allen? The quarterback who just led his team to another victory Sunday to overtake Buffalo for first place in the AFC East: Tua Tagovailoa.

Despite an NFL-leading 82.6 QBR, the Miami Dolphins signal-caller has just the fourth-shortest odds at +650. But his stats are worthy of first-place consideration. After a third straight three-touchdown, zero-interception game to beat the Browns, his 9.1 yards per pass attempt lead the league, his 71 completion percentage is second only to Geno Smith, his 18 touchdowns are tied for third behind Mahomes and Allen, and his three interceptions are tied for second-fewest among starters.

More importantly, the Dolphins are undefeated in games Tagovailoa has started and finished, and he remains the hottest QB in the league right now. So, those numbers could continue sky-rocketing.

That leaves now as the time to get in on his MVP odds before it’s too late.

Memphis had one of the worst bad beats of the year, but at least a Tigers wideout made an absolutely gorgeous 41-yard TD pass

Nevermind the bad beat. Gabriel Rogers got tricks, y’all.

Houston won Friday night – making it a brutally bad beat for folks who bet on Memphis – but the Tigers had whole lot of fun making Cougars coach Dana Holgersen really mad.

Memphis – who was favored by 2.5 points against the Cougars – had built a 20-7 lead by the start of the fourth quarter at the Liberty Bowl by scoring on some run-pass-option trickery, taking advantage of a really ugly missed field goal, and stuffing Houston on the goal line.

While the Tigers had a comfortable lead late in the game (and we’ll get to how they blew that in just a moment) they still had some more tricks up their sleeves, drawing up a play that would’ve made veterans of trickeration like Georgia’s Kenny McIntosh and Troy’s Luke Whittemore smile.

Lined up in a shotgun set with two receivers to the left and one to the right, Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan sent his tight end in motion, took the snap and threw a quick pass to wideout Gabriel Rogers. Houston defenders swarmed him, but Rogers left them in a dizzy as he scampered away. On the run, Rogers then fired a 41-yard strike downfield to fellow receiver Asa Martin, who hauled the pass in for a touchdown.

It was a receiver-to-receiver touchdown pass of beauty, and worked much better than whatever the Seattle Seahawks tried to do a few weeks ago.

See for yourself:

Quarterback is just the latest position the super-talented Rogers has starred in for the Tigers. He was mostly a defensive back his first two seasons, played running back and returned kicks last year, and is now featuring at wide receiver for the Tigers.

It was another play by Memphis that likely drew this sort of reaction from Holgersen:

But the joy for the Tigers wouldn’t last, and this game had plenty of more fireworks. Later in the fourth quarter, Houston’s Jaycee Rogers ran back a kick 100 yards for a touchdown to kickstart the Cougars’ comeback.

The point total in this game was set at 57.5 points. The Cougars wrecked the hopes of the folks who bet the under – and the bettors who grabbed the Memphis moneyline – by scoring twice in the final 90 seconds to take a 33-32 victory.

Bad Beat: UConn pulls off miraculous win over Villanova but falls short of the cover

UConn -2.5 bettors were sooo close.

UConn should have lost Tuesday night’s game to Villanova. Then, they came back and should have covered a 2.5-point spread.

Instead, they won AND fell short of the cover.

Favored at home, the 21st-ranked Huskies trailed No. 8 Villanova by four points with under 40 seconds left to play. All ‘Nova had to do was not turn the ball over and knock down a few free throws.

That proved to be too much.

After a UConn turnover, Villanova guard Caleb Daniels missed the front end of a one-and-one, missing an opportunity to extend the Wildcats lead with 30 seconds left. UConn took advantage out of the ensuing timeout break, as forward Tyler Polley knocked down a clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point.

At this point, Villanova was sweating but still in the driver’s seat. Just don’t turn it ov…

OK, so this call was a bit controversial.

Villanova guard Collin Gillespie ran into a trap with 17 seconds left and a jump ball was called with the possession arrow in UConn’s favor. Many fans questioned the call.

Either way, it resulted in a Huskies possession and the go-ahead basket on an R.J. Cole layup.

And that’s where the bad beat comes in.

If you were a UConn -2.5 bettor, you were resigned to losing well before this moment. But then the Huskies were up one and there was a glimmer of hope.

On ‘Nova’s next possession, Gillespie drove into the lane for a go-ahead layup attempt but instead was called for a charge. That meant Villanova had to foul for a shot at the ball back, so they put UConn’s Andre Jackson on the free throw line with less than a second left and a chance at the backdoor cover.

The first free throw was good. The second missed.

Villanova +2.5 bettors were spared. UConn -145 moneyline bettors were ecstatic. UConn +2.5 bettors were left holding the bag.

Only the Jets could have a bad beat on a potential backdoor cover vs. Colts

Oh nooooo.

Whew. It was quite a roller-coaster ride of a Thursday night Week 9 game between the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts.

And it ended with a bad beat of sorts, one in which the Jets had a shot at covering the spread … but they were extremely Jets-y, for lack of a better word.

With QB Mike White injured and the Jets struggling defensively, the Colts went up 42-10 in the third quarter. Game over, right?

Nope. The Jets went on to score three times more, with only a fourth-quarter Colts field goal interrupting the action. It was 45-30 … and the Jets had the ball at the Colts’ seven-yard line with under a minute left.

This is important, because many sportsbooks had the Jets as +10.5-point underdogs, including Tipico. A touchdown would cover. Heck, even Joe Buck and Troy Aikman noticed minutes before.

But then?

Oof. I count this as a bad beat. But only the Jets could have a bad beat of sorts on a night like this.

Watch: Cleveland Browns’ bettors take mind-blowing bad beat

A 45-42 lead became a 47-42 final on the last play of the game and it cost people who wagered on the Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns fans and backers knew the loss was the worst that could happen, right. They trailed 45-42 Monday after Justin Tucker’s field goal for the Baltimore Ravens.

At least they had a push with two seconds left because the Browns were getting three points coming into the game.

So, a loss on the field and a push when it came to bets, right?

Wrong. Dead, freaking wrong.

In what has to be the cruelest betting loss in forever, the Cleveland Browns attempted the hook-and-lateral and lateral and lateral and lateral and the ball kept in the wrong direction.

Cleveland kept throwing backward passes, laterals, whatever. And then the people who had the three points and the home team suddenly had their hearts in their throats.

It wouldn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen. Oh, yeah, it did.

The laterals wound up going out the back of the end zone and suddenly, a 45-42 final score turned into Baltimore 47, Cleveland 42.

Jarvis Landry Safety

47-42

And the cruelest defeat had turned into double trouble for Browns fans who put their money where their hearts were.

Iowa vs. Southern: Meaningless halfcourt buzzer-beater leads to gut-wrenching bad beat

This is the worst way to lose a bet.

Behind a 41-point performance from national player of the year candidate Luka Garza, the No. 5 Iowa Hawkeyes cruised to a 103-76 win over Southern on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season. For bettors who put money on Iowa to cover the spread, though, the ending of the game were equal parts heartbreaking and enraging.

The Hawkeyes entered the game as a 28-point favorite, and appeared poised to win by 30 as they ran the clock out on the game. Southern got the ball back with just a few seconds left to play – but Brendon Brooks heaved a halfcourt shot at the buzzer and banked it in trim the margin to 27 points. The 2020 college basketball season is only a few days old, but there may not be a worse beat the rest of the year.
