Clemson heads into the break holding onto a commanding 30-7 lead, but it certainly wasn’t all pretty.

The Tigers punted just once in the first half, but an offense that had taken a step forward took a backseat to another standout defensive performance. Clemson’s defense accounted for six sacks and a Mario Goodrich, Jr. interception.

They held the Huskies to -49 rushing yards on 14 attempts. UConn had 41 yards of total offense in the first half. Although Clemson wasn’t much better offensively. The Tigers had 287 yards of offense, but it came on a total of 55 first-half offensive plays.

The Tigers were able to extend their lead to 23 after D.J. Uiagalelei connected with his high school teammate and newfound favorite target, Beaux Collins, for a 32-yard touchdown.

Of course, the Tigers weren’t without their faults. They gave up a special teams touchdown and Uiagalelei threw his seventh interception of the season. And on top of that, Justyn Ross left the game injured.

The redshirt junior receiver returned to the sidelines on crutches and in street clothes, sporting a boot on his injured left foot. That wasn’t the only injury, though. The cart was brought out for sophomore linebacker Sergio Allen, who was injured on a kickoff midway through the second quarter.

Uiagalelei, clearly hampered by his PCL strain, went just 17-of-37 with 217 yards passing. He completed just 46% of his passes.

Clemson was able to move the ball down the field, but it didn’t come at will. Instead, it was the B.T. Potter show. Clemson’s senior kicker went 3-of-3 on field goals in the first half, accounting for 9 of the team’s 30 first-half points.

Throughout the first half, Clemson experimented with different offensive line combinations. Marcus Tate shifted out to his natural position (left tackle), while Bryn Tucker took over the left guard position and Mitchell Mayes got some work on the right side.

Though they were both dressed and seemingly healthy, neither Will Shipley nor Kobe Pace saw any action throughout Saturday’s opening frame. It was Phil Mafah and Darien Rencher who took the reins of the backfield for the Tigers, combining for 15 yards on 13 carries.

Additionally, Taisun Phommachanch scored his first-career rushing touchdown to give Clemson a 17-7 lead. Phommachanch led the rushing attack with 16 yards on three carries. He also completed one pass for 33 yards to Dacari Collins, setting up his own score.

Clemson’s afternoon got off to a rude awakening after UConn returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After dropping the kick on the ground, UConn’s kick returner, Brian Brewton, picked up the football and scampered 99 yards for a touchdown.

Even though the Huskies jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, the Tigers were able to take control of the game. That was after Will Swinney perfectly executed a fake field goal to score his second career touchdown, giving Clemson a 10-7 lead.

The Tigers weren’t done there, though. UConn quickly went three-and-out after Tyler Davis sacked Huskies’ quarterback Jack Zergiotis for a loss of nine yards. On the ensuing offensive possession, the Tiger scored in less than two minutes, taking six plays to go 66 yards and take a 17-7 lead.

From there, Clemson scored 13 unanswered points.

The Tigers will receive the second-half opening kickoff.

Clemson vs. UConn: Who has the edge?

Clemson (6-3) will take a break from seven consecutive ACC games to play its final non-conference home game against Connecticut (1-8) on Saturday. Kickoff from Memorial Stadium is set for noon. The game will be televised by the ACC Network.

Clemson’s defense vs. UConn’s offense: Clemson had one of its poorest showings of the season on defense last week against Louisville’s dual-threat quarterback Malik Cunningham, who had more than 100 yards rushing by early in the third quarter before an ankle injury slowed him down.

The Cardinals finished with 223 rushing yards against a top-25 run defense nationally and 397 total yards, but Clemson won’t be facing any kind of rushing threat against UConn, whose quarterback, Steven Krajewski, is averaging just 12.3 yards on the ground. The Huskies’ leading rusher, Nathan Carter, is averaging just 52.1 yards per game.

In fact, there’s just not a whole lot UConn is doing well offensively. The Huskies rank 113th or worse out of 130 FBS teams in rushing, passing and scoring. Only four teams are averaging fewer yards than UConn (281.6 per game).

Meanwhile, Clemson is in the top 50 in nearly every major defensive statistical category and still owns the country’s No. 8 scoring defense (16.2 points per game). Oh, and UConn is playing its backup quarterback after Tyler Phommachanh, who has family ties to Clemson’s backup, recently suffered a season-ending knee injury. Advantage: Clemson

Clemson’s offense vs. UConn’s defense: The objective for Clemson’s offense this week, offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said, is to build on the breakthrough of sorts it’s experienced of late.

There’s more improvement the Tigers need to make. But with back-to-back fourth-quarter comebacks, Clemson has shown its most consistent signs of life this season over the last two weeks.

The offense followed up its 24-point performance against Florida State — the first one this season against an FBS foe in regulation — with a season-high 30 points against Louisville. Clemson did it without a consistent running game, which produced just 125 yards behind an offensive line that started its sixth different lineup.

D.J. Uiagalelei helped by having arguably his best all-around performance against the Cardinals, throwing for a season-high 220 yards and accounting for three touchdowns. His first scoring toss — a 46-yarder to Beaux Collins in the first quarter — was a perfectly placed deep ball that hasn’t always been there from the sophomore quarterback this season.

Uiagalelei is still dealing with that sprained knee, so there’s a chance Taisun Phommachanh could see his role increase Saturday. Clemson will also be without receiver Joseph Ngata, and other injured players are questionable. But the Tigers’ roster is filled with the kind of talent and athleticism that UConn’s defense simply won’t be able to contend with.

The Huskies have only held one team to fewer than 24 points this season, and their schedule to this point has included Wyoming, Vanderbilt, UMass and Holy Cross, which put up 38 points in a 10-point win back on Sept. 4. Advantage: Clemson

Special teams: Not much to analyze here. Clemson has Will Spiers (43.4 yards per punt) and B.T. Potter, who bounced back from that uncharacteristically off night against Florida State by making all three of his field goals against Louisville. UConn doesn’t.

The Huskies are averaging 13.5 per punt return, good for 16th nationally in that department. But it’s hard to envision any of UConn’s returners running away from the caliber of athlete they’ll see Saturday. Advantage: Clemson

Bottom line: How bad have things been for UConn this season? The program’s hiring of former NFL coach Jim Mora Jr. as its next head coach earlier this week has gotten far more attention than anything the Huskies have done on the field. For Clemson, this is all about executing, getting up early, getting its starters out of the game and avoiding any more serious injuries.

Prediction: Clemson 38, UConn 10

A special kind of perfection on the line Saturday for Clemson

Clemson’s threads will have a different look to them this weekend.

When the Tigers square off against UConn on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, they’ll be wearing their all-purple uniforms for the first time this season. It will also be the only time the Tigers break them out.

“Coming to Clemson, we don’t get that many opportunities to switch things up,” freshman receiver Beaux Collins said. “So being able to wear the purple, it’s really exciting. I love the purple unis. They look sweet.”

The occasion? Military Appreciation Day, which has been a tradition for nearly three decades at a university that’s deeply rooted in the subject.

Founded in 1889, Clemson, known then as Clemson Agricultural College, was originally a military school based on the belief that a military environment produced the highest academic excellence. According to the school, more than 10,000 alums have served in the military beginning with the first graduating class in 1896. Even as the school transitioned to a co-ed civilian institution in 1955, its military heritage has remained.

The history of Military Appreciation Day dates back to 1994 when Clemson had a special flyover before its home game against Georgia Tech that season. That will make Saturday’s game the 28th consecutive celebration of the military at Clemson, which happens every November or when the Tigers host a team with its own military heritage.

It will also be the 13th time coaching the Tigers on Military Appreciation Day for Dabo Swinney. Clemson is unbeaten on the special day with Swinney at the helm, and the Tigers would like to keep it that way.

“I just really think it’s a great day. It’s amazing,” Swinney said. “It’s sacrifice that people in the military have to make to serve others. When you really think about that, it gives you a perspective that I think we all should have and an appreciation of the opportunities and privileges that we get to be a part of college football.”

The last time Clemson lost on Military Appreciation Day was 2007 against Virginia Tech, two seasons before Swinney became the head coach permanently. He spent the second half of the 2008 season as the interim coach following Tommy Bowden’s resignation, but Clemson had already played its Military Appreciation Day game by then.

The Tigers have rarely been beaten on Military Appreciation Day. They’re 23-4 in the previous 27 such games.

“I take a lot of pride in the traditions here at Clemson,” Swinney said. “‘First of all, we play at Memorial Stadium, and we have this unbelievable scroll. And the military heritage at this university is something that everybody takes a lot of pride in. It means a lot. It runs really deep. We have lots of players on this team who have family scattered all throughout the military. It’s just one of the things that I have really embraced since I came to Clemson.”

Clemson vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

It’s not like the Clemson offense is working now that it scored 30 points in back-to-back games.

First, as too many people in the investment world painfully know, the O didn’t get the Tigers up to 30 against Florida State, and there were only 345 yards of total offense against Louisville last week.
UConn isn’t going to score a ton on this Clemson defense, but it hasn’t been bad against the run and it’s been able to hang around here and there throughout the year.

And for what it’s worth, there’s a rest factor. The Huskies haven’t played in almost three weeks, all while Clemson is looking at this as a scrimmage before dealing with Wake Forest. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Clemson Will Win

For all of Clemson’s problems, a ten-win season is still in the picture. Beating Wake Forest next week would be huge, taking down South Carolina on the road would be massive, and there’s going to be a bowl game.

To do that, the offense still needs a whole lot of work, and that’s what UConn is for. This isn’t going to be a game the Tigers are going to take lightly.

This is the game to get the passing attack going. It’s been brutally inconsistent without enough of a downfield presence, the this is why you pay a team like this to come to your house. You try cranking it up a bit to get ready for the two big games that do matter.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Jim Mora Jr. isn’t able to do anything with UConn quite yet.

Yeah, Clemson has finally been able to get to 30 points against an FBS team and did it in back-to-back weeks.

UConn would kill to get there – it hasn’t scored more than 28.

Purdue beat the Huskies 49-0, but Vanderbilt had to fight to get out with a 30-28 win. Clemson’s performance will be somewhere in between.

There won’t be any danger, but this isn’t going to be totally smooth. The O will open it up enough to put this away fast, and the D won’t allow much of anything outside of a random score.

Middle Tennessee vs UConn Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The offense is inconsistent, the defense is spotty, and the team is having a hard time coming up with the big offensive plays at the right times, and …

Takeaways, takeaways, takeaways. They keep on coming.

The Blue Raiders lead the nation in turnover margin and are second behind Iowa with 17 takeaways on the year. They generated six in the shocking win over Marshall, and followed it up with three in last week’s blowout loss to Liberty.

UConn doesn’t have a massive turnover issue, but it gave it up three times in the loss to UMass, four times in the loss to Holy Cross, and it’s going to force things to try to stay in the game, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

Middle Tennessee isn’t getting good enough players from the lines.

The running game is sputtering – to be kind – the run defense isn’t good enough, and while there’s just enough pressure being generated to force mistakes, the secondary is still getting hit way too hard.

UConn has hardly been ale to crank up the offensive production, but it came brutally close to beating Vanderbilt and Wyoming, lost to UMass mainly because the team had covid issues, and it’s coming off a win over Yale.

The team is finding ways to stay in games, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Middle Tennessee’s offense take over with a little help from the other side.

Give UConn credit. The defense has tightened up in a big way over the last month, but Blue Raider Chase Cunningham isn’t making a whole lot of big mistakes, the passing game should click early on, and the O will take advantage of three UConn turnovers to pull away as the game goes on.

UConn vs Yale Game Preview

Why Yale Will Win

Yeah, head coach Lou Spanos and a few assistant coaches, but things really aren’t going well if you lose to UMass 27-13.

Yale is only 2-2 with a few tight losses, but it’s got the best D in the FCS at coming up with third down stops, and UConn is only converting at a 26% clip. The offensive line is excellent in pass protection for an attack that doesn’t turn the ball over.

UConn’s offensive line can’t get the ground game going for an O that’s given the ball away 13 times so far.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies have been knocking on that door.

They pushed Wyoming, they lost in a heartbreaker to Vanderbilt, and it all looked like it was about to kick in when the Covid problems hit the coaching staff and the team was an inexplicable -3 in turnover margin against UMass.

For all of the great things the Yale defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways. The offensive side doesn’t have a ton of downfield pop – it’s not great on third downs – and the UConn D should …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The UConn D is going to have problems.

Yale’s offense should be able to run well enough to control the game from the start as the Huskies suffer yet another tough, close loss with several missed opportunities being the storyline.

For the seventh time in eight games this year, UConn will fail to hit 300 yards of total offense.

UConn Huskies College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Welcome to life as an independent, even if it’s a year late. The team that ended up doing next to nothing offensively in its last year in the American Athletic Conference still has a whole lot of question marks and work to do, and not being able to do much this spring didn’t help, either. So …

– The Huskies have several options all in the mix for the quarterback gig. Anyone who can provide a spark – and not throw a bazillion interceptions – will likely get the call. Sophomore Jack Zergiotis was thrown to the wolves in 2019 and threw for 1,782 yards and nine scores with 11 picks, 6-4, 225-pound junior Micah Leon comes in from NC State to make a push, and 6-4, 216-pound sophomore Steven Krajewski are all in the mix.

Leading receiver Cameron Ross returns after making a team-high 60 catches two years ago. Second-leading receiver Ardell Brown is gone, but just about everyone else of note in the receiving corps who caught a pass returns, but …

Running back Art Thompkins is gone – he was the second-leading receiver with 39 catches – but leading rusher Kevin Mensah is back after running for over 1,000 yards and nine scores. The rest of the backfield is unproven, but Mensah will be the workhorse.

The offensive line didn’t do much for the ground game and was even worse in pass protection. On the plus side, it was a very young group in 2019 that had a full year in the weight room. However, the one good blocker from two years ago – Matt Peart – is off being a New York Giant, and there’s not a ton of size up front.

UConn Huskies Football Schedule Analysis: At the moment there are 11 games with room for another late in the season with three open dates from October 30th on.

The Huskies have an interesting mix of games with winnable FCS dates against Holy Cross and Yale, a must-win moment at UMass, and with a few other potential fights. However, there are a few too many paycheck games that they should be +20 point – and probably a whole lot more – underdogs.

If any of the games against Fresno State, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Clemson and UCF are anything other than brutal, be shocked.

Is there any hope at home against Wyoming, Middle Tennessee or at Army? There needs to be at least one win in the group.

UConn Cancels Football Season Due To Coronavirus Risks

UConn has canceled its 2020 college football season due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus.

UConn has canceled its 2020 college football season due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus.

UConn football is the first FBS school to cancel college football in 2020.

An independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference, UConn was coming off a rough 6-30 run in the last three seasons under Randy Edsall. Now it’s taking the year off after advising with the state’s health officials.

“After receiving guidance from state and public health officials and consulting with football student-athletes, we’ve decided that we will not compete on the gridiron this season,” said athletic director David Benedict in his statement. “The safety challenges created by COVID-19 place our football student-athletes at an unacceptable level of risk.”

Cancelling the season makes practical sense, too.

[jwplayer muPr0F4N]

UConn was having a hard time coming up with games with Illinois, Virginia, Indiana, Ole Miss and North Carolina all off the schedule with the Power Five programs keeping their slates in-house, and with the FCS season in question.

Instead of trying to shoehorn in games with little chance of generating much in the way of revenue – the lack of fans in the stands is a problem, and the TV revenue wouldn’t be great without the games against the Power Five teams – this makes fiscal as well as practical health sense.

In the end, the program appears to have felt it couldn’t safely pull off playing a season.

The Huskies went 2-10 last season and was about to embark on a true rebuilding season as an independent. Lots of transfers and lots of young players were going to be thrown into the mix in the transition out of the AAC, and it was still going to be a fight to come up with more than four wins had it played.

[lawrence-related id=511916]

UConn hasn’t had a winning season since 2010.

Wins and losses don’t factor into the health aspect, but again, the lack of revenue with the concerns over having fans in the building, and with the lost paycheck from the Power Five teams were all part of the equation.

In the end, though, it came down to the health and safety of the players. UConn was the first major team to take the season off. It probably won’t be the last.
