Williams for a 50-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Running back Chez Mellusi also chipped in 60 yards and two scores on the ground over 16 carries.

Alabama, meanwhile, was locked into a 14-13 battle with South Florida entering the fourth quarter last week, ultimately separating in the final period to capture a 42-16 victory at home. Quarterback Jalen Milroe totaled 194 passing yards and two scores through the air in the win.

The Wisconsin Badgers defeated the South Dakota Coyotes 27-13 to pick up their second consecutive victory to open the 2024 season on Saturday.

Luke Fickell’s crew displayed a few flashes of dominance during the nonconference matchup. But in the end, Wisconsin’s overall output was relatively uninspiring.

Following his subpar, zero-touchdown performance in Week 1 against Western Michigan, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke opened the contest with a 54-yard passing drive to lead the Badgers into the end zone. He found wide receiver Vinny Anthony II for a 32-yard strike and deep threat Bryson Green for 22 yards on that possession.

He ultimately wound up with 17 completions for 214 passing yards and one touchdown, which arrived on an off-balance throw to a wide-open C.J. Williams for 50 yards down the right sideline. The play was easily the most notable of Wisconsin’s entire afternoon.

On the ground, sophomore running back Cade Yacamelli rattled off several long rushes, including a 29-yarder in the second quarter. Veteran running back Chez Mellusi tallied 16 carries, 60 yards and two rushing touchdowns as well.

UW also recorded three sacks on the day and four pass deflections as a defensive unit to accompany its solid offensive output.

The rest of Wisconsin’s 2024 schedule is nowhere near generous. As of Sept. 8, the Badgers will square off against No. 4 Alabama, No. 11 USC, No. 8 Penn State, No. 9 Oregon and No. 23 Nebraska in five of the team’s final 11 games.

The Wisconsin Badgers football team beat South Dakota 27-13 at home on Saturday. Wisconsin improved to 2-0 to open a season for the first time since 2020.

Wisconsin was able to get off to a hot start against the Coyotes, finishing their first drive with a nine-yard rushing touchdown by running back Chez Mellusi. They later added a 50-yard score through the air from quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to wide receiver C.J. Williams on their third possession, giving them an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Van Dyke finished his day with 214 passing yards and the aforementioned touchdown pass, while Mellusi compiled 60 yards and two scores on 16 carries. Additionally, running back Cade Yacamelli had an efficient day, churning out 73 yards on eight carries, including a 29-yarder.

After trailing 17-3 at halftime, South Dakota made it rather interesting in the second half, narrowing the deficit to 17-13 at one point in the third quarter. Running back Charles Pierre Jr. had 12 carries for 83 yards while his backfield mate Keyondray Jones-Logan made the most of his only touch, turning an end-around into a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Badgers were able to secure a 50-yard field goal from Nathanial Vakos with 2:21 left in the third quarter, expanding the lead to 20-13. Chez Mellusi put the game out of reach for the Coyotes with his second score of the day in the fourth quarter with 7:41 left in the game.

Wisconsin is off to a fast start in Week 2 against South Dakota.

The Badgers now lead 14-0 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter, the lead recently extended by an impressive touchdown drive.

The story of the offense’s general struggles against Western Michigan in Week 1 was a lack of explosive plays. That has already been reversed, with QB Tyler Van Dyke already connecting on passes for 22, 32 and 50 yards.

The exclamation point on the strong start was his 50-yard touchdown pass to WR C.J. Williams. The veteran quarterback faked an RPO handoff to Chez Mellusi, began to run around the edge, then pulled up and threw to a wide-open Williams streaking down the field.

The touchdown pass is Van Dyke’s first in a Wisconsin uniform. He only found the end zone with his legs during the Badgers Week 1 win.

It’s early, but Van Dyke and the Badgers offense already looks much-improved after Week 1.

One statistic Wisconsin must change entering Week 2 matchup vs. South Dakota

OC Phil Longo’s offense has one major thing to change entering Week 2:

One word to describe Wisconsin’s pedestrian performance in its Week 1 win over Western Michigan: inexplosive.

Wisconsin tallied 388 yards of total offense (192 passing, 196 rushing), gained 27 first downs, was an impressive 11/17 on third and fourth down and traveled into the Western Michigan red zone a total of six times. It moved the ball at will.

But with 10 minutes left in the game, the Badgers somehow trailed 14-13.

One easy ‘one stat that must change’ is the team’s red zone efficiency. It reached the red zone in each of its first four drives, though scored only 13 points. The drives went: Missed field goal, touchdown, field goal, field goal. Scoring touchdowns on all of those trips would be a great place to start.

But Wisconsin’s biggest problem on offense was separate from its red zone struggles. The problem was a lack of explosiveness. The unit did not register a play longer than 17 yards.

That gets to the central problem facing the team, or at least the reason it failed to score 40+ against a poor MAC opponent. What is Phil Longo’s air raid offense if not explosive? That is a rhetorical question. The answer is not that good.

Longo’s attack works when it can hit big strikes, whether on the ground or through the air. Luke Fickell said on Monday that Western Michigan presented some unique looks, taking the Badgers out of their original plan. But whichever looks the offense saw, it should be able to hit on plays longer than 17 yards.

That failure to create explosive plays led the team to run far too many plays to drive the field. As seen in some of its first-half drives, too many plays often leads to trouble — missed field goals, turnovers, timely penalties, etc.

Wisconsin’s first four drives were 16 plays, 16 plays, 14 plays and 14 plays. That works to wear down a defense, but it also gives the opponent far too many opportunities to stall the drive’s progress.

The Badgers’ drives were of that length because the team went 11/17 on third and fourth down, an unsustainable rate of success. A team facing 16 third downs in a game typically means it is punting 7-8 times, at least. So the key to offensive success, especially in Longo’s scheme, is avoiding those situations. To do that, a team must create explosive, field-flipping plays.

The Badgers supposedly have the playmakers to stretch opposing defenses in the pass-happy offensive scheme. Week 2 vs. South Dakota will be about connecting on those plays and flashing the explosive potential of the offense. Otherwise, things won’t look good entering Week 3 vs. Alabama.

The Wisconsin Badgers football team defeated Western Michigan 28-14 in their 2024 season opener on Friday night. Although the game was too close for comfort at times, it is the program’s third-straight season-opening win.

Making his Wisconsin debut at quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke threw for 192 yards against the Broncos.

The wait for Wisconsin Badgers football is almost over. The team will launch their 2024 campaign on Friday night at home against Western Michigan.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT, 9 p.m. ET at Camp Randall Stadium as year two of the Luke Fickell era gets underway.

The Badgers will be looking to win their third straight season opener, operating with a new quarterback in Tyler Van Dyke, who transferred from Miami in the offseason. Additionally, amongst their haul of transfers in the portal, they brought in edge rusher John Pius (William & Mary) and interior linebacker Jaheim Thomas (Arkansas), who figure to be significant assets in 2024.

It’s not all new faces in Madison this season though. Running back Chez Mellusi is back for his final year of eligibility while leading receiver Will Pauling is also among the returning offensive personnel. On the defensive side of the ball, leading tackler safety Hunter Wohler is back and cornerback Ricardo Hallman will be patrolling the secondary after snatching seven interceptions in 2023.

Former Wisconsin QB secures starting job with UConn

Former Wisconsin QB secures starting job with UConn

The 2024 college football season is officially here and the Wisconsin Badgers will begin their season at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday night against Western Michigan. Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke will be the Badgers’ starting quarterback

Former Badgers quarterback Nick Evers, who was once considered a viable option for the team’s starting role in 2024, was named UConn’s starting QB for Week 1 earlier this week.

Evers transferred to Wisconsin ahead of the 2023 season after beginning his career at Oklahoma as a four-star recruit in 2022. Evers was buried on the depth chart behind Tanner Mordecai and Braedyn Locke last season, failing to appear in a game with the Badgers.

After entering spring camp as the team’s third option behind Van Dyke and Locke, Evers decided to enter the transfer portal and ultimately ended up with the Huskies.

He joined 2023 teammate wide receiver Skyler Bell in transferring to UConn. He’s also the second quarterback to depart Madison and earn starting job in 2024, as Myles Burkett did the same at Albany.

Three Wisconsin Badgers land on The Athletic’s top 100 transfers list

The Wisconsin football team added a ton of talent in the transfer portal following the 2023 season and The Athletic included three Badgers players in their top 100 transfers.

Linebacker John Pius came in as the highest-ranked Wisconsin addition, coming in as the No. 29 overall transfer. Pius transferred to Madison in the offseason after three seasons at William & Mary, most recently recording 53 total tackles, including 9.0 sacks, during the 2023 campaign. Wisconsin struggled to get to the opposing quarterback last year and Pius will look to help change that in 2024.

The next Badger to appear on the list is quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who was announced as the team’s starter last week. Van Dyke was listed as the No. 35 overall transfer, joining Wisconsin after compiling 7,469 passing yards and 54 touchdowns over three seasons as the starter with Miami.

Finally, right behind Van Dyke, interior linebacker Jaheim Thomas was listed as the No. 36 overall transfer. Thomas spent the first three years of his collegiate career under head coach Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, before registering 90 total tackles, including 6.5 sacks, with Arkansas in 2023. Now reunited with Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel in Madison, Thomas will attempt to take another step up with the Badgers.
