USFL Draft: Former Georgia WR Tyler Simmons picked by Houston Gamblers

Simmons is headed to Houston…

The USFL (United States Football League) held its inaugural draft this week.

With the seventh pick in the 16th round, the Houston Gamblers selected former Georgia receiver Tyler Simmons.

Simmons, who played for the Bulldogs from 2016-2019, was a key special teams contributor throughout his career and eventually filled a starting receiver role in 2019.

The Powder Springs, Ga., native played in 48 games, catching 35 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver at Georgia. Simmons also added 143 yards in punt returns in his career.

Simmons went undrafted in 2020 but signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent before being released in August of last year.

The USFL is a football league currently set to begin on April 16 and run through July 3. Games will be broadcast on Fox, NBC and USA.

Former Georgia Bulldogs standout wide receiver Tyler Simmons scored the NFL’s second touchdown of the preseason. Simmons’ score gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a 15-3 lead over the Dallas Cowboys.

Tyler Simmons earned another NFL opportunity this offseason following Georgia’s pro day. Simmons is competing for an NFL roster spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers this NFL season. His preseason touchdown will certainly help his cause.

Simmons, who had a brief stint last year on the Houston Texans’ practice squad, benefited from Georgia’s pro day. Kirby Smart invited a few former Georgia Bulldogs to compete in the event and boost their exposure in front of NFL scouts.

The list of those attending UGA’s pro day included Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Following Georgia’s pro day, Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert offered Simmons a chance to compete for a roster spot in 2021.

Simmons is effective as a wide receiver or as a special teams player, and he can carry the ball occasionally. Simmons’ versatile skills and athletic profile helped him turn some heads at Georgia’s pro day and ultimately get another opportunity in the NFL.

Smart did the right thing to invite Simmons and David Marshall to Georgia’s pro day. Simmons will have to work to make the Steelers’ opening day roster, but he could turn his time with Pittsburgh into another offer elsewhere.

For every $25 made, $1 will be donated to Extra Special People, a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities.

Simmons is synonymous with UGA’s 2018 title game loss versus Alabama. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native, then a sophomore, appeared to block a punt late in the third quarter, which would have given the Bulldogs a chance to extended the lead and put Alabama into full comeback mode.

Instead, officials called Simmons offside and Alabama punted once more, this time without any mishaps, giving Alabama a much more accomplishable task of getting back in the game from 10 points down.

We are well aware of what happened next, and I will not rehash it here, but be the judge yourself – was Simmons onside or not?

In my opinion, Simmons was clearly onside and every Alabama fan should keep that in mind when they think back to this game.

I love that Simmons has used the phrase for his benefit, but more importantly, the donations to ESP for every $25 sold is a program everyone can get behind.

Former Georgia football WR Tyler Simmons received his new number from the Houston Texans this week.

Speed kills, and Simmons has plenty of it.

A former three-star recruit out of McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia, Simmons never really got much of an opportunity to shine in the Bulldogs’ offense.

Georgia did get creative with him, though, as he scored two career touchdowns on the ground via jet sweeps.

In all, Simmons recorded 658 total yards and five touchdowns as a Bulldog.

Oh, and he was onside.
