Former Auburn 2025 commit joins long list of Big Cat Weekend visitors

Auburn will get another chance to land a solid 2025 linebacker during the most important recruiting weekend of the year.

This weekend, Auburn will roll out the red carpet for its most crucial targets for Big Cat Weekend.

This weekend, [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and his staff will host several notable recruits. Among those names are those who have already committed and those who are pledged elsewhere. There will also be a special case for one recruit: trying to win him back.

[autotag]Tyler Lockhart[/autotag], a four-star linebacker from Winona, Mississippi, is scheduled to return to the Plains this weekend after backing off his pledge to Auburn last month.

Lockhart has not joined another recruiting class since de-committing from Auburn, but it is heavily speculated that he is heading to Mississippi State to join his brother, 2024 signee TJ Lockhart. On3 has given the Bulldogs a 93.7% chance to land Lockhart while three 247Sports recruiting experts have given Mississippi State a crystal ball in favor of Lockhart.

Lockhart becomes the next target for Auburn to sway this weekend. Four-star safety [autotag]Anquon Fegans[/autotag] and four-star EDGE [autotag]Jared Smith[/autotag], both from Thompson High School in Alabaster, will announce their commitments shortly after Big Cat Weekend. Could Lockhart join them by reaffirming his pledge?

Auburn predicted to land four-star safety Anquon Fegans ahead of July commitment

Auburn’s 2025 class could be boosted in July if it secures the commitment of Alabama’s No. 9 prospect.

Auburn football’s 2025 recruiting class has experienced highs and lows this month.

The class ranked as high as No. 4 after four-star running back [autotag]Alvin Henderson[/autotag] flipped his pledge from Auburn to Penn State on June 21 and has since dropped to No. 13 in a week after de-commitments from four-star OL [autotag]Carde Smith[/autotag] and four-star linebacker [autotag]Tyler Lockhart[/autotag].

It is hard to predict how successful July will be for Auburn in terms of recruiting. Still, experts expect [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s program to take a step forward by landing one of Alabama’s top recruits from the 2025 cycle.

[autotag]Anquon Fegans[/autotag], a four-star safety from Thompson High School in Alabaster, will close out July by announcing his commitment. According to 247Sports, Auburn will be the program to beat for Fegans as four recruiting experts, including national recruiting analyst Tom Loy, have logged crystal ball predictions in favor of Auburn.

Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente, who has also logged a crystal ball prediction for Fegans to commit to Auburn, included Fegans in his Who Could Commit Next? series earlier this month. Clemente says that Fegans will announce his decision on July 29, two days after participating in Big Cat Weekend. Auburn may have an advantage due to a family connection.

With his older brother Antwon transferring in and joining the team as a walk-on recently, Fegans’ connections to Auburn and the staff only continues to grow. Auburn has had the buzz and we first put him on our “Who could commit next” list in January. The only thing that’s changed is things have ramped up even more towards Auburn landing him.

Fegans is the No. 9 safety from the 2025 class according to 247Sports, and is the No. 9 overall recruit from Alabama. Auburn will need to fight off Georgia, Clemson, and LSU this month in order to add Fegans to its 2025 haul.

Four-star LB Tyler Lockhart backs off Auburn pledge

Lockhart becomes Auburn’s second de-commitment of the week, joining OL Carde Smith.

Auburn football has suffered a hit to its 2025 recruiting class for the second time this week.

Days after four-star OL [autotag]Carde Smith[/autotag] backed off his pledge to Auburn, four-star linebacker [autotag]Tyler Lockhart[/autotag] has done the same. Lockhart announced Friday that he has de-committed from Auburn after committing to the program in May.

Lockhart’s commitment to Auburn in May surprised many, as it was predicted that he would join his brother, offensive lineman TJ Lockhart, at Mississippi State. The thought of him joining Mississippi State’s 2025 class is becoming more likely now that he is no longer committed to Auburn, as predictions are beginning to pour in.

After Lockhart backed off his commitment to Auburn, Jeffrey Lee of On3 submitted a prediction for him to commit to Mississippi State. Mississippi State has three other predictions in favor of adding Lockhart to its 2025 class, including two from 247Sports. Mississippi State now has a 93.7% chance to land Lockhart according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Following the departure of Lockhart and Smith from its 2025 class, Auburn has fallen to No. 12 in 247Sports’ 2025 recruiting rankings. A week ago, Auburn climbed to No. 4 in 247Sports’ rankings after flipping four-star running back [autotag]Alvin Henderson[/autotag] from Penn State.

Auburn target Anquon Fegans down to four schools

Auburn remains in the race to land the four-star safety ahead of his July commitment.

Auburn football continues to make pushes on the recruiting trail, trying to land some of the nation’s top high school players for the future of the sport on the Plains. With many official visits having taken place last weekend, the Tigers are putting things into full motion more than ever.

One major hope that head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has is to land four-star safety [autotag]Anquon Fegans[/autotag], who announced Auburn as being part of his top four on Wednesday.

The Tigers are competing with Clemson, LSU and Georgia to land the sensation out of Thompson High School in Alabama. He has recorded 176 tackles and 18 interceptions in his three seasons with the powerhouse.

Fegans visited Auburn in March and received a prediction from Cole Pinkston at Auburn Live to land on the Plains in April. Now, after more extensive visits around the country, the safety has narrowed down his choices ahead of his July 29 commitment.

The current showings in the On3 recruiting prediction machine shows the Tigers as a heavy favorite to land the Thompson star. The On3 industry ranking shows Fegans as the No. 55 player in the country and the No. 5 safety. He is also the No. 4 prospect in the state of Alabama.

Auburn’s 2025 class is currently ranked 10th in the nation. If it landed Fegans, he would be the highest rated recruit for the program in this cycle. He could potentially join the Tigers’ numerous four-star commits in [autotag]Malik Autry[/autotag], [autotag]Jakaleb Faulk[/autotag], [autotag]Tyler Lockhart[/autotag], [autotag]Jourdin Crawford[/autotag], [autotag]Tavaris Dice[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Carde Smith[/autotag].

Auburn provides an ‘eye-opening’ experience for Miami commit Elijah Melendez

Hugh Freeze and DJ Durkin gained trust with Melendez during his recent visit to Auburn.

The race continues on for many of the nation’s top football recruits as numerous official visits were taken over the weekend. Auburn hosted multiple notable players, trying to make statements that will help head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] turn his program around.

One of the players that visited is current Miami commit and four-star linebacker [autotag]Elijah Melendez[/autotag], who has been committed since December, but is still making visits to other schools.

The Osceola High School (Florida) product made the trip to the Plains joined by his older brother, who felt the same positive sentiment on about the visit.

Melendez has a special feeling about the relationship that he is building with both Freeze and defensive coordinator [autotag]DJ Durkin[/autotag]. The trust is there, and that is important for what he wants as a player.

“Just being around the staff, Coach (DJ) Durkin and Coach Hugh Freeze,” Melendez said in an interview with Auburn Live. “Just building better bonds with them and seeing their plans for me here and being able to trust them. They gained a lot of trust with me this weekend and that really helps a lot.”

The Miami commit is ranked No. 169 in the class of 2025 and the No. 20 linebacker according to the On3 industry ranking. He is also ranked the No. 24 player in the state of Florida.

A flip from Melendez would be a big turn of events for the Auburn. Should he commit, he would join a stout defensive class that already includes four-star linebacker [autotag]Tyler Lockhart[/autotag], along with fellow Florida native in cornerback [autotag]Dante Core[/autotag].
