Commanders lose center Tyler Larsen for the season

Tyler Larsen will not be easy to replace this season for the Commanders.

For the second consecutive season, the Washington Commanders have placed two starting centers on season-ending injured reserve. Washington announced Monday it had placed center Tyler Larsen on injured reserve after he injured his knee in the Week 13 tie against the New York Giants.

Not long after Larsen went to the ground, the medical cart came to the field to pick him up. Not much was said about Larsen’s condition after the game as the Commanders wanted to get a second opinion, but Monday’s news was bad for Larsen and the team.

Larsen tore his Achilles in Week 14 last year and worked his way back earlier this season. After starting center Chase Roullier was lost for the season in Week 2, the Commanders used Wes Schweitzer at center, but he suffered a concussion. Washington then started newly-signed Nick Martin at center until Larsen returned in Week 6. Larsen’s return stabilized an offensive line that had struggled early in the season

Schweitzer returned last week, but the Commanders may keep him at guard, meaning Martin could be back at center Sunday for the game against the Giants.

Larsen tweeted about the terrible field conditions at MetLife Stadium last week.

Losing Larsen is a difficult blow for Washington’s offensive line.

Commanders’ bye is coming at the perfect time

The bye is arriving at the right time for the Commanders.

It’s not often a team in the middle of a playoff chase gets a bye week in Week 14. In the case of the Washington Commanders, it couldn’t come at a better time.

The Commanders have battled injuries throughout the season but have remained relatively healthy overall. However, in Sunday’s tie with the New York Giants, their injury luck began to change.

Right tackle Sam Cosmi, who made his first career start at right guard Sunday, left the game with an ankle injury. It does appear Cosmi escaped serious injury and could return for the Week 15 rematch.

Center Tyler Larsen doesn’t appear so lucky. Larsen, Washington’s fourth center this season, had been playing in the absence of starter Chase Roullier who was injured in Week 2 and lost for the season. Larsen was carted off the field late in Sunday’s game with a dislocated kneecap.

It’s unfortunate for Larsen and Washington. Larsen’s season ended prematurely last season after he replaced an injured Roullier midway through the season. Larsen suffered an Achilles injury in Week 14 and missed the remainder of the season. He began this season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, and Washington activated him on Oct. 8. He quickly replaced Nick Martin at center and stabilized the Commanders offensive line.

While Larsen’s injury is a big blow to Washington’s offensive line, the bye week gives the Commanders time to determine if they want Martin back at center or decide to move Wes Schweitzer to center. Schweitzer was activated ahead of Sunday’s game.

In addition to the offensive line injuries, the bye week gives players time to rest after a grueling season. Antonio Gibson, Logan Thomas, Trai Turner, Dax Milne and Jonathan Allen are among those who’ve been banged up recently.

The break also gives defensive end Chase Young an extra week as the Commanders hope Young can finally make his debut in Week 15.

While the bye week is perfect for the Week 15 rematch against the New York Giants, the decision to move the game to Sunday night puts the Commanders at a bit of a disadvantage for Week 16. Washington travels to San Francisco to play the red-hot 49ers on short rest for a game on Christmas Eve the following Saturday.

The Commanders aren’t complaining, though. To be playing meaningful football in December is a nice change.

Chase Roullier to undergo knee surgery, most likely ending his season

Roullier was injured at the end of Washington’s Week 2 loss to the Lions.

It’s only been four weeks, but the season couldn’t have begun any worse for the Washington Commanders’ offensive line. After a Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Commanders have lost three games in a row.

In Week 2, Washington went into halftime down 22-0 before coming back. The Commanders stormed back, but it was too little too late as the Lions held on for a 36-27 win. Unfortunately, Washington’s most significant loss that day didn’t come in the standings but in center Chase Roullier.

At the end of the game, Roullier suffered a knee injury, and the team feared Roullier was lost for the season. However, he would get a second opinion before the severity was determined.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Roullier is expected to undergo knee surgery this week, and the fear is he’s out for the remainder of the season.

Not much is known, but Fowler leaving the window open on a return this season makes it possible Roullier’s injury isn’t as serious as initially feared. Head coach Ron Rivera will likely address Roullier’s injury this week.

This is tough news for Roullier, who broke his leg in Week 8 last season. He discussed this offseason the difficulty of the rehabilitation process.

Roullier’s replacement, Wes Schweitzer, went on injured reserve with a concussion, leading the Commanders to sign veteran Nick Martin.

Center Tyler Larsen is expected to be activated from the PUP list Wednesday, giving him three weeks to show the team he’s ready to play. Right tackle Sam Cosmi injured his hand in Sunday’s Week 4 loss to Dallas and could miss multiple weeks.

Commanders make multiple roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s cut deadline

Commanders release two players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to trim rosters to 80.

The Washington Commanders were busy on Tuesday making roster moves to trim the roster to 80 players ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Washington moved star defensive end Chase Young from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to the reserve/PUP list, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the 2022 NFL season.

Reserve center Tyler Larsen was also moved to the reserve/PUP list.

In addition to those moves, the Commanders released veteran offensive tackle Rashod Hill and wide receiver Kelvin Harmon.

Hill is a seven-year NFL veteran Washington signed last month amidst the injuries along the offensive line. He played in the first preseason game against the Panthers but did not play last week against the Chiefs.

Harmon was a sixth-round pick by Washington back in 2019. He played in all 16 games as a rookie, catching 30 passes for 365 yards. He missed the 2021 season with a knee injury. Washington released Harmon last offseason but was later re-signed to the practice squad.

The Commanders also placed recently signed linebacker Nathan Gerry on injured reserve.

Washington re-signs veteran center Tyler Larsen

Washington retained veteran center Tyler Larsen — a good depth move for the Commanders.

On a day when the Washington Commanders lost Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Scherff, they kept one of their top reserves in town.

On Monday, John Keim of ESPN reported that Washington had agreed to terms with Larsen, ensuring his return for 2022. Larsen, 30, spent the 2021 season with the Commanders after spending the previous five seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Originally an undrafted free agent from Utah State, Larsen entered the NFL in 2014 with the Miami Dolphins. He was released during final cuts and signed with the then-Washington Redskins in 2015. Larsen spent the offseason with Washington and again was released during final cuts.

Larsen appeared in 68 games for the Panthers, making 18 starts. With Washington in 2021, Larsen appeared in nine games, starting three games before injuring his Achilles in a December loss to Dallas. He was one of four centers who started for Washington in 2021 and played well before his injury.

Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post confirmed Larsen’s deal was for one year.

Washington adds 3 more players to COVID list, including Kam Curl

Washington added three more players to the reserve/COVID-19 list, and how has 21 players on the list.

The Washington Football Team added three more players to the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday. Safety Kam Curl and centers Keith Ismael and Tyler Larsen were the latest additions to the COVID list.

Washington now has 21 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Washington is in a dire situation at center, with Larsen and Ismael on the COVID list. Larsen will likely head to injured reserve after injuring his Achilles in Sunday’s loss to Dallas but joins the COVID list for now.

Ismael was Washington’s fourth center, following Chase Roullier, Larsen and Wes Schweitzer. Roullier and Schweitzer are already on IR.

Curl is one of Washington’s top players. This season, the second-year safety has been outstanding and will be difficult to replace if he can’t play Sunday vs. Eagles.

There’s still no word on whether some players placed on the COVID list either last week or earlier this week will be available to play Sunday. As of now, Washington will have trouble fielding a competent roster in a massive NFC East game with playoff implications.

The Washington Football just added three more players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list, raising the total up to 21 players as a Week 15 matchup with the Eagles looms.

The team placed quarterback Kyle Allen, linebacker Milo Eifler, safety Darrick Forrest, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas, tight end Sammis Reyes and receiver Cam Sims on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday.

While starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke is expected to be available, Washington signed quarterback Jordan Ta’amu to its practice squad, joining Kyle Shurmur.

Center Tyler Larsen is carted off the field for Washington

Washington center Tyler Larsen was carted off the field with an Achilles’ injury.

Washington center Tyler Larsen returned to the starting lineup for the WFT’s Week 14 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys after missing multiple games with an injury.

Early in the fourth quarter of Washington’s game vs. Cowboys, Larsen was injured again when he went down on a Dallas sack of quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke was also slow to get up on the play.

However, the injury appeared far more severe for Larsen. After being down on the field for several minutes, the cart came on the field for Larsen.

Washington officially ruled Larsen out for the game.

Washington’s injury woes at center began in Week 8 when starter Chase Roullier was lost for the season.

To replace Roullier, Washington turned to Larsen. In the Week 10 win over the Bucs, Larsen played well before he was injured in the Week 11 win over the Panthers.

Wes Schweitzer replaced him. In the Week 12 win over the Seahawks, Schweitzer was injured, leading Washington to turn to its fourth center of the season in Keith Ismael.

Larsen was available to play in Week 13, but Washington started Ismael.

This time, it appears Larsen’s season may be over.

Wednesday injury report for Washington vs. Raiders, Week 13

Five players missed practice for Washington Wednesday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Washington Football Team was back on the practice field Wednesday after Monday night’s 17-15 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

As you might expect, Washington’s injury report was full on Wednesday, with so many players banged up from Monday.

The two notable injuries from Monday night’s game were running back J.D. McKissic and center/guard Wes Schweitzer. Both players missed practice Wednesday. McKissic was listed on the injury report with a concussion, while Schweitzer nurses an ankle injury.

While being in concussion protocol is not a positive development, McKissic’s injury initially looked much worse.

Safety/linebacker Landon Collins also missed practice with a foot injury. That situation is worth monitoring throughout the week.

Center Tyler Larsen remains out with a knee injury, while cornerback Benjamin St-Juste missed practice due to a concussion. St-Juste has missed time this season with concussions.

Antonio Gibson, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, Brandon Scherff and Ricky Seals-Jones were all limited. It’s encouraging to see Samuel on the field after playing in a game Monday night, which would indicate he’s on the right track. The same applies to Thomas, who was activated from injured reserve Monday.

Gibson and Scherff are limited throughout the week, every week.

As for the Raiders, star tight end Darren Waller missed Wednesday’s practice with back and knee injuries. Defensive end Carl Nassib and linebacker Patrick Onwuasor also missed practice.

Washington brings back center Jon Toth to practice squad

Jon Toth was with Washington in training camp and is now back with Washington on the practice squad.

On Monday, the Washington Football Team brought back a somewhat familiar face when they signed center Jon Toth to the practice squad. Toth, who signed with Washington in August, but was released during final cuts, replaces Keith Ismael on the practice squad, who the WFT signed to the active roster.

These moves come on the heels of Washington losing starting center Chase Roullier for the season. Roullier injured his leg in a Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos and was later ruled out for the season.

Veteran Tyler Larsen replaces Roullier in the starting lineup. The 30-year-old Larsen is in his eighth NFL season — and first with Washington. Ismael will be Larsen’s primary backup and provide depth at guard, too.

Toth entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky in 2017. He has spent time on the rosters of the Eagles, Jets, Browns and Lions. He also had a stint in the XFL.

Washington was off in Week 9 and hosts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.
