Huntley is looking to catch on somewhere. An audition like this should help.

The Cleveland Browns are fighting well into the night as they continue through their preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks. Cutting their deficit, quarterback Tyler Huntley was able to find receiver James Proche II from seven yards out for the Browns’ second touchdown of the game.

Huntley, the former backup and spot starter for the Baltimore Ravens, is fighting for a spot on the Browns’ practice squad or an opportunity to catch on somewhere else. Unfortunately, Huntley does not have a pathway to the 53-man roster in Cleveland but is putting on a showcase for 31 other teams.

This late-game strike should help.

For Proche, he joined the Browns as a special teamer a year ago and was signed to the active roster after the trade of Donovan Peoples-Jones. His pathway to the 53-man roster is also extremely murky, but he is certainly a player the Browns would welcome back to their practice squad.

The battle for QB3 has long ended

Well, it wasn’t much of a fight.

The Cleveland Browns do not have a ton of position battles on an established roster, but one that has been catching attention has been the battle for the third quarterback on the roster between Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Tyler Huntley.

That war has ended in less than dramatic fashion after another preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings came to a close.

Huntley has been subpar for two straight games, failing to lead the offense to much of any success against backups and third stringers, while Thompson-Robinson has shown the ability to rip tight window throws and has led multiple Browns’ scoring drives.

Through two games, Thompson-Robinson has been firing at a 27-for-35 clip for 260 yards, one touchdown, and one interception that went off the hands of receiver Jamari Thrash. Meanwhile, Huntley has been throwing at just a 20-for-29 clip with 176 yards passing and two ugly interceptions in Saturday’s game against the Vikings.

If this were an actual competition, it would be a blowout on par with the Browns’ playoff loss to the Houston Texans a year ago.

Just as P.J. Walker was a year ago, however, there is a solid chance that he goes unclaimed on waivers after getting cut and will revert back to Cleveland’s practice squad.

There is still a question as to whether or not the Browns will roster three quarterbacks, but after drafting him just a year ago and with him showing glimpses of hope in both the regular season and preseason, it seems unlikely that Thompson-Robinson will get cut.

However, with Jameis Winston on just a one-year deal, and with Thompson-Robinson under contract for two more years beyond 2024, the Browns are hoping he is their backup quarterback of the future.

The early indications show growth from Thompson-Robinson from his rookie season to now.

Some fans were left questioning the Baltimore Ravens’ selection of Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary with the No. 218 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, following the departure of Tyler Huntley to the Cleveland Browns in free agency, the Ravens needed an alternative cheap solution to the backup quarterback position for the foreseeable future.

When speaking to the media following the end of the draft, Baltimore general manager Eric DeCosta confirmed that veteran quarterback Josh Johnson will remain Lamar Jackson’s primary backup this season while Leary develops.

“Josh will be the backup quarterback, and I think Devin will develop,” DeCosta said. “He’ll probably be the third quarterback this year in some way or fashion and grow into the job as we go.”

Johnson, soon to be 38, re-signed on a one-year deal with the Ravens after spending last season in Baltimore. The Ravens also have Malik Cunningham, but the former Louisville quarterback’s future at the position in the NFL is uncertain as he has taken work at wide receiver for Baltimore.

 

Browns sign former Ravens Pro Bowl QB Tyler Huntley

The Browns have added their fourth QB to the roster, and likely the one who lands on the practice squad.

Despite adding Jameis Winston, the Cleveland Browns are not done at the quarterback position. This time, they add former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley on a one-year deal.

Huntley made the Pro Bowl as an alternate in 2022 after filling in for Lamar Jackson for four starts. That season, Huntley had a stat line of 658 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He added another touchdown and 137 yards rushing.

A year ago, the Browns were forced to start five different quarterbacks, somehow stringing together 11 wins. They appear ready to make sure history does not repeat itself in 2024 should starting quarterback Deshaun Watson suffer another setback with his shoulder.

First, they added perhaps the best backup quarterback on the market in Jameis Winston, and now, they have added a former Pro Bowl quarterback in Huntley. They now have four quarterbacks on the roster, including Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

While the hope is that Watson plays all 17 games, and plays well, the Browns are in a much better position in their quarterback room than they were a year ago.

Browns to sign former Ravens QB Tyler Huntley to a 1-year deal

The Ravens are losing another contributor to a division rival, as QB Tyler Huntley is signing with the Cleveland Browns

After spending the previous four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens as a backup to quarterback Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley has found a new home with another AFC North team.

According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, Huntley is expected to sign with the Cleveland Browns.

Huntley signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 2020. After season-ending injuries to Jackson, Huntley took over as the team’s starter to finish the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He was almost successful in leading Baltimore to an upset victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs.

Through four seasons with the Ravens, Huntley completed 221 passes for 1,957 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
