Notre Dame vs. Cincinnati: Second-Quarter Analysis

This has gotten bad.

We were waiting for someone to take control of this game, and it finally has happened. Unfortunately, it’s not Notre Dame. Continued self-inflicted mistakes have cost the Irish, and they find themselves down to Cincinnati, 17-0, at halftime.

On the Irish’s first drive of the second quarter, Tyler Buchner became the second quarterback wearing gold and blue in as many quarters to throw an interception as he was being blitzed. This time, Deshawn Pace made the grab and returned it to the Irish’s 8-yard line. Three plays later, Desmond Ridder hit Leonard Taylor for a 1-yard touchdown pass.

Things got worse when Chris Tyree muffed the ensuing kickoff and Wilson Huber recoverd the ball, setting the Bearcats up inside the Irish’s red zone for the second time in as many drives. They nearly scored another touchdown even quicker than they just had, but an ineligible receiver downfield wiped that out. The special teams turnover still proved costly as Cole Smith eventually drilled a 23-yard field goal.

The quarter reached a standstill for a time with Jack Coan being reinserted as quarterback the only notable event. As something of an improvement over an earlier decision that snuffed out the Irish’s best drive to this point, Coan held onto the ball as he took a third-down sack from Darrian Beavers and Curtis Brooks.

The Bearcats had one last opportunity to open things up before the break and did just that. In a drive that spanned 80 yards and only 68 seconds, Ridder completed three passes of at least 20 yards, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown reception by Tre Tucker. From there, the Bearcats faithful took over Notre Dame Stadium, making their chants heard. They might have a lot more to cheer about really soon.

Notre Dame vs. Cincinnati: First-Quarter Analysis

No nothing in that quarter.

As we expected, Notre Dame and Cincinnati have indicated that it won’t be easy to determine a winner in this game. There have been signs of both teams getting ready to take control, but it simply hasn’t happened yet. So it should come as no surprise that this contest is scoreless after the first quarter.

The Irish took the ball first and appeared to be headed for some early points, namely because of some strong gains by Kyren Williams and Michael Mayer that mainly came via the passing game. Mayer in particular made a nice catch on fourth-and-10 to give the Irish a fresh set of downs inside the Bearcats’ red zone. After another first-down catch by Mayer set the Irish up at the 6-yard line, it was time for the Bearcats’ vaunted red-zone defense to show up. It did just that on a questionable throw by Jack Coan that ended up in the hands of Ahmad Gardner, snuffing out what had been a productive drive until then.

Over the game’s next three drives, both teams picked up a first down before being forced to punt. Two defensive highlights for the Irish came during that sequence. One was when Kyle Hamilton blitzed Desmond Ridder and nearly picked off the ball as soon as it left Ridder’s hand. Another came when Ridder fired a 45-yard pass toward Alec Pierce in the end zone that was broken up by Clarence Lewis.

The Irish’s final drive of the quarter saw Tyler Buchner assume quarterback duties for the moment. He nearly helped the Irish pick up a first down but for a hold by Josh Lugg. Thus, the drive was doomed to the game’s first three-and-out.

Why having a quarterback controversy is great for Notre Dame

Sometimes having a quarterback controversy isn’t great, but for the Fighting Irish, it’s not a bad sign this season.

Although it may seem like a difficult situation for the Irish with having a quarterback controversy, it might not be the worst problem for Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to have.

We are all awaiting the word as to who will take the first snaps under center against the Bearcats, but it could be worse. Find out below why having multiple quarterbacks who could get the job done for the Irish is a great situation to have going forward.

Latest Notre Dame quarterback news entering Cincinnati week

Who should start at QB vs. Cincinnati?

When No. 8 Notre Dame plays host to No. 7 Cincinnati on Saturday the Fighting Irish will be doing so with a two-quarterback system.  Exactly which two quarterbacks however remains to be seen.

Jack Coan has been Notre Dame’s starter for the first four games of the season but was knocked out of the most recent win against Wisconsin.  Although it isn’t serious in terms of being a longterm injury, his availability for the showdown with Cincinnati is still unkown.

The quarterback situation is such, and I think I mentioned it after the game, if Jack is healthy, Jack would be our starter,” Brian Kelly said on Monday, “We’ll see when we get on the field tomorrow. We’re not on the field today, so I really can’t give you an assessment of how (Coan) is relative to throwing the football. I think tomorrow we’ll make a decision on how he feels and how he looks.”

As was the case against Toledo and for the first half against Purdue, freshman Tyler Buchner will play the other quarterback role that has helped in opening up the running game.

“But Tyler felt really good yesterday at treatment, so he declared himself feeling really good, so that that’s good for us,” Kelly said, “That allows us to get him back into the mix.”

Right now it would appear that Coan will be the starter for Saturday but if things don’t go as planned in Tuesday’s practice then it’ll be Drew Pyne that the Irish will lean on to get them through another big-time matchup.

“If he (Coan) can’t then Drew is ready to go and it appears that Tyler is going to be in pretty good shape to play for us,” Kelly said, “So, the two quarterback situation, it just depends on what two from that standpoint.”

What are your initial thoughts about the showdown with Cincinnati?

No. 8 Notre Dame faced their toughest opponent to date Saturday as a fourth quarter blitz gave the Irish a 41-13 victory over Wisconsin.  Things don’t get any easier this week as a No. 8 Cincinnati team with dreams of crashing the College Football Playoff party are headed to South Bend.

Here is the depth chart Notre Dame released on Monday ahead of the showdown with a few things of note.

Notre Dame-Wisconsin: Tyler Buchner health update

How key is what Buchner brings to the offense going to be on Saturday?

Notre Dame has struggled to run the ball with any consistency early in 2021 and has called upon freshman quarterback Tyler Buchner to help in that department.

His legs present a different danger for opposing defenses to have to account for but against Purdue a tweaked hamstring kept him from seeing the field after halftime.  Will Buchner be ready to go on Saturday when the Irish take on Wisconsin at Soldier Field in Chicago?

“Buchner is improving, we got him up to about his miles per hour in terms of full out sprint yesterday was where we wanted it to be,” Brian Kelly said Thursday, “We’ll add more to his load with the expectation of preparing him for his role at quarterback on Saturday.”

Notre Dame has their hands especially full as Wisconsin brings one of the best defensive fronts in the nation to the game Saturday.  The Badgers are allowing fewer than two yards per carry by opponents in their two games this season.

Notre Dame vs. Purdue: First-Quarter Analysis

This game has been blah so far.

We’re one quarter into Notre Dame’s game against Purdue, and things don’t seem to have gotten any better. The good news for the Irish is it’s a long game, and a lot still can happen. The bad news is they haven’t given their crowd much hope that that’s in the cards. Thus, they find themselves with a 3-0 deficit.

The first play from scrimmage set the stage for the rest of the quarter when Jack Coan was sacked by Jaylan Alexander. Not helped by a false start, the Irish never got back to the original line of scrimmage, and the Boilermakers ended up starting their first drive in Irish territory. A couple of third-down conversions helped get them into the red zone, though that didn’t happen until the Irish finally forced a fourth down. It still was enough for Mitchell Fineran to kick an easy 34-yard field goal for the game’s first points.

Both teams punted over the game’s next three drives in a display of sloppy football. There were costly penalties, stuffed runs, incomplete passes and even a fumble, though that wasn’t lost. Kyle Hamilton gave the Irish a bit of life when he came up with a stop on fourth down, as did Coan through the air and Tyler Buchner on the ground before the clock ran out on the quarter. Still, from a neutral fan’s perspective, this did not start off as a game worthy of attention on the last official Saturday afternoon of summer.

Let’s get wild, Purdue! Predictions for Notre Dame against the Boilermakers

Who do you think has a good game for the Irish today?

It’s been an up-and-down first two games for the Irish. Each game saw Notre Dame build a late lead, 18 points against Florida State and 8 points against Toledo, only to have to fend off the opposition and escape with a win. It might be more of the same this weekend, as instate foe Purdue would love to come away with an upset in Notre Dame Stadium. Here are a few predictions for the Irish as they face the Boilermakers.

Tale of the Tape: Starting Quarterbacks – Jack Coan vs. Jack Plummer

We’re just about even here.

Fans tuning into Saturday’s game between Notre Dame and Purdue will have a pair of Jacks as their opening hand at quarterback. Despite some calls for Tyler Buchner to start for the Irish, Brian Kelly is sticking with Jack Coan for now. So far, Coan has done nothing to dispel the notion that he’s all aerial and nonexistent on the ground. The good news is he has the arm to counter an opponent who is just as productive at passing, and he’ll need that in this game.

The Boilermakers’ Jack Plummer is a clone of Coan in that he also is a great passer but not known for running. If he has advantages anywhere thus far, they come from a slightly higher pass completion and no interceptions thrown yet. Given everything, however, this might as even a quarterback matchup that the Irish will face all year. To pull off the win, they might have to look in other directions.

Reasons why Notre Dame needs to switch quarterbacks now

Who should start this at this quarterback this Saturday?

We finally got a glimpse of Notre Dame’s quarterback of the future or should we be saying of the present. Both Jack Coan and Tyler Buchner got quality snaps against Toledo and the Irish managed to escape with a win on Saturday. After seen what the true freshman could do, I have become more convinced that Buchner should move into the starting role immediately and here are a few reasons why.
