Notre Dame quarterback update ahead of USC game

Who should Notre Dame be starting at quarterback this week and why?

Who will start at quarterback for Notre Dame on Saturday as the Irish renew their nearly century long rivalry with USC?

Will it be the starter from their last contest that was benched in the first half before being put back in to save the day after his replacement got hurt?

Will it be that replacement that had an extra week to heal up?

Or will it be the spark plug that helped save the day against Wisconsin and nearly engineered a comeback against Cincinnati but who didn’t see the field at Virginia Tech?

In terms of starting the answer appears to be Jack Coan while freshman Tyler Buchner will get work.  Drew Pyne meanwhile must be a different player in practice than on game day or something because Brian Kelly indicated Monday that it’ll be unlikely to see Pyne against USC.

“I think from a quarterback standpoint, Jack Coan continues to be the guy that we feel like gives us the best chance to win. A mixture of him with Tyler Buchner, I think both of them.

Drew (Pyne) has done some really good things for us. If we feel like we’re in a situation where we need to call on him, we would. But I think right now, as we look at it, it’s probably in my mind, and I know Tommy’s, that Jack would start and we’ll continue to get Tyler more playing time.”

I can’t say I’m shocked by this but I’m not thrilled, either.  Coan just led an epic comeback against Virginia Tech which was exciting but he also struggle mightily to start the game and has had plenty of issues at times this season.

I’m all for Notre Dame going about this and trying to win as many games as possible.  They clearly see the future being more about Buchner than Pyne at this point which now makes me wonder what Pyne’s future in South Bend may be.

I do wish we’d see Pyne get more game reps or at least be told why he isn’t after he’s performed how he has in games, however.

Notre Dame comes back to win at Virginia Tech: 5 instant takeaways

Would you have put Coan back in the game?

The cardiac kids were at it again Saturday night as No. 14 Notre Dame trailed Virginia Tech 29-21 with just under four minutes to go in regulation.

Jack Coan was a disaster in the first quarter, replaced by Tyler Buchner who gave the Irish a needed spark before sputtering and appearing to roll his ankle away from a play and being forced to exit.

Coan returned with under four minutes to lead a game-tying touchdown drive before getting the ball back and leading the Irish into range for Jonathan Doerer to hit his second game-winning field goal of the season.

It was a football game that was played and that Notre Dame won,  Here are my five instant takeaways as the Irish move to 5-1:

Michael Mayer injury update

Hopefully this doesn’t linger for another month

Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was clearly battling an injury while trying to help guide an Irish comeback against Cincinnati that wasn’t meant to be.  After the game Brian Kelly gave more details to Mayer’s situation and what he’s been playing through for roughly a month.

“He has a groin. He’s been battling through a groin strain. He’s a warrior and out there competing with a groin strain. It’s something he has been dealing with for the last month or so.”

“I kind of hurt it a little bit in camp and on and off,” Mayer said following the game, “I kind of tweaked it today.”

Mayer finished the game with eight receptions for 90 yards.  He would go on to say he expects to be ready to go for Notre Dame’s trip to Virginia Tech next Saturday night.

No. 7 Notre Dame’s depth chart ahead of No. 8 Cincinnati

What are your initial thoughts about the showdown with Cincinnati?

No. 8 Notre Dame faced their toughest opponent to date Saturday as a fourth quarter blitz gave the Irish a 41-13 victory over Wisconsin.  Things don’t get any easier this week as a No. 8 Cincinnati team with dreams of crashing the College Football Playoff party are headed to South Bend.

Here is the depth chart Notre Dame released on Monday ahead of the showdown with a few things of note.
