Notre Dame Football Offers West Virginia Grad-Transfer

Notre Dame hasn’t been as active in the transfer portal this spring as last but they did extend an offer to a Big 12 defender on Tuesday.

Notre Dame football hasn’t seen the anywhere near the same amount of departures via the transfer portal immediately following spring practice as they did a year ago.  It was then the likes of [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag], [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], and others left.

So far for Notre Dame it has been just defensive back [autotag]Micha Bell[/autotag] and punter [autotag]Bryce McPherson[/autotag] who entered near the end of camp.

Notre Dame is on the prowl to find replacements apparently as Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish made an offer to a Big 12 veteran on Tuesday.

Montre Miller, who spent last year at West Virginia after spending the start of his college career at Kent State entered the portal on Tuesday.  It was seemingly just hours later that he announced a scholarship offer from Notre Dame on his social media.

Between 2021 and 2022 at Kent State, Miller made 99 tackles, forced a pair of fumbles while also recovering a pair, intercepted six passes, and was responsible for 19 pass breakups.

No word on how seriously he’s considering the Notre Dame offer but he did also announce offers from Mississippi State, UConn, and Texas State as of Tuesday night.

We’ll keep you posted at Fighting Irish Wire to anything that happens here or with any other Notre Dame transfer portal happenings.

Notre Dame dropped recruiting ball on Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy

Would probably like to have this one back…

It has been said that one man’s trash can be another man’s treasure.

Perhaps that is the perfect way to describe Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy who was a Notre Dame recruit roughly a half-decade ago.

McCarthy originally played his high school football at Nazareth Academy in the Chicago suburbs (same school as Notre Dame great Julian Love) before spending his senior year at IMG Academy in Florida. He was right in Notre Dame’s back yard and seemed to love the school.

McCarthy made several reported trips to Notre Dame during his high school career as a recruit but never received a scholarship offer. Instead, Brian Kelly and Tommy Rees put their quarterback recruiting chips in the basket of Tyler Buchner in the 2021 class.

McCarthy wound up at Michigan and has his team playing for a national championship. He very well could enter the NFL draft and make a handsome amount of professional money.

If you can stomach it Notre Dame fans, below are a few quotes from McCarthy himself about the excitement of being pitched by Notre Dame back in the day and what might have been.

Another former Fighting Irish quarterback returning to Notre Dame

He’s baaaaaaack! (sorta)

Earlier this offseason came the news former Notre Dame starting quarterback Tyler Buchner was returning to campus. Briefly Alabama’s starting quarterback, Buchner will return to South Bend to play lacrosse for Notre Dame but not football.

Add a second former starting quarterback to the list of people returning to Notre Dame but not playing football. This time its former Notre Dame starting quarterback Drew Pyne.

Pyne started much of the 2022 season after Buchner was hurt in the season’s second game. He transferred to Arizona State this past year. He played in two games, threw two touchdown passes and threw three interceptions.

According to Pete Thamel, Pyne will return to school to graduate but has no plans to be a part of the football program.

Is Notre Dame’s quarterback room getting better?

Seeing as two former starters are back on campus with eligibility remaining but with no interest in playing football, it certainly seems that is the case.

Regardless, welcome back No. 10!

Report: Tyler Buchner is headed back to Notre Dame

Could he win two national championships in the next six months?

What’s old is new again at Notre Dame.

Former Fighting Irish starting quarterback Tyler Buchner, who transferred to Alabama last spring, is transferring back to continue his athletic career at Notre Dame.

Just it won’t be on the football field.

Buchner, who was a star lacrosse player as well as quarterback in high school, will be back at Notre Dame but this time as a member of the national powerhouse lacrosse program.

Terry Foy of Inside Lacrosse first had the news on Monday.

So realistically speaking, Buchner could win a national championship in football with Alabama next month, transfer to Notre Dame, and win a national championship in a different sport in the spring.

Welcome back, kid!

Alabama QB Tyler Buchner enters transfer portal as LAX player

Alabama QB Tyler Buchner is entering the NCAA transfer portal, but for lacrosse

In less than shocking news, Alabama third-string quarterback Tyler Buchner entered the NCAA transfer portal this afternoon. In more than shocking news, he entered the portal as a lacrosse player.

Buchner transferred to the Crimson Tide from Notre Dame back in April and struggled mightily in his one start. Coming out of high school in California, Buchner was one of the top lacrosse recruits in the country as well. Ultimately, he chose to play football in college as he was the No. 41 overall player in the 2021 recruiting cycle and highly sought after.

With Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson ahead on the depth chart and five-star Julian Sayin on his way to town the writing was on the wall for Buchner that his chances to play would be slim moving forward. It will be interesting to see if Simpson follows in Buchner’s foot steps.

With the Tide still having a semi-final game just four weeks away, the timing is a bit surprising. It is not known at this time if Buchner will return to football in the future.

Alabama releases this week’s Student-Athletes of the Week

Take a look at this week’s Student-Athletes of the Week!

The Alabama football team has nearly wrapped up its bye week and will soon shift its entire focus to their Week 10 opponent, the LSU Tigers.

Even with the bye week going on, the Crimson Tide continued their weekly tradition of releasing their Student-Athletes of the Week, and on Thursday, this week’s recipients were announced.

Taking home the honor this week are a trio of first-year Alabama players, freshman defensive back Caleb Downs, freshman linebacker Qua Russaw, and redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner.

Downs is a star for the Alabama defense and actually leads the team in tackles after eight games. Russaw is a five-star linebacker prospect who has not seen any action this season and will likely redshirt. Buchner transferred from Notre Dame and started the South Florida game, but has not appeared in a game since.

Alabama reveals official QB depth chart

Alabama moves the “or” on the official depth chart. The official QB order has been revealed.

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban revealed ahead of the Week 4 matchup against Ole Miss that the cake is ready to go, which indicates that the quarterback battle is over.

The QB competition lasted the duration of the offseason and bled into the first three weeks of the regular season. Ultimately, it was Jalen Milroe who won the starting job.

Mike Rodak of 247Sports shared a picture to social media of the Alabama depth chart for the Ole Miss contest. In prior depth charts, the QB portion had the word “or” in between the quarterbacks’ names. This practice tells the reader of the depth chart that there is no set order and that any one of those players could be QB1.

In the picture shared by Rodak, there’s a clear order. Milroe is QB1, Simpson is QB2, Tyler Buchner is QB3, Dylan Lonergan is QB4. Eli Holstein’s name is not listed.

Social media reaction as Tyler Buchner and Tommy Rees have awful day for Alabama

Yikes…

It wasn’t the debut as a starter at Alabama that former Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner was looking for. After being second on the depth chart in Alabama’s first two games, Buchner was named the starter as the Crimson Tide traveled to South Florida on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Buchner struggled mightily as Alabama looked out of sorts under his direction. On their first five possessions, the Crimson Tide marched a grand total of 78 yards on offense. Buchner went just 5 of 14 passing for 34 yards and was benched to allow former mega-recruit Ty Simpson to play.

Simpson led Alabama to a field goal on his first possession and ultimately Alabama won 17-3 at South Florida. As you can probably imagine, social media reaction to Buchner’s outing as well as Tommy Rees’ playcalling was not kind.

Recapping Alabama’s sloppy first half performance in Week 3 against USF

No. 10 Alabama is tied 3-3 with USF at the end of the first half. Roll Tide Wire recaps the first half.

There are no words to truly describe Alabama’s first half performance against USF. The Crimson Tide are knotted up at 3-3 heading into the locker room.

Alabama decided to make a change at the quarterback position in favor of starting redshirt sophomore Tyler Buchner. The Notre Dame transfer did not do enough to move the needle and was taken out after Alabama was forced to punt in the first five drives of the game.

The defense has performed well enough to keep the Crimson Tide in the game. However, the defense has struggled to get off the field on third downs on several occasions.

The key play for Alabama in the first half was a fumble that was recovered by true freshman, defensive lineman James Smith.

Following the fumble recovery, Alabama turned to redshirt freshman Ty Simpson. He failed to help the Crimson Tide get in the end zone. Nonetheless, he did help Alabama score three points to finish out the half.

Now, it is apparent that Alabama will have to make some of the necessary changes and adjustments to come away with a win. If not, Alabama is stepping in dangerous waters.

Alabama fans react to Tyler Buchner and slow start in Week 3

Alabama fans react to slow start vs. USF start during weather delay

Week 3 was supposed to be a tune-up game for the Tide before heading into conference play against Ole Miss next week. However, things could not have started slower for the Tide as they trail USF 3-0. Alabama may have caught a break as the game was delayed by lightning allowing the Tide a chance to regroup.

Former Notre Dame quarterback, Tyler Buchner, made his first career start for the Tide and fans are not thrilled with what they have seen. Going into the delay, Buchner is 4-10 for 25 yards with a couple of balls dug into the dirt. In his defense, the weather was less than stellar from the start which inevitably led to the delay.

Former Tide players and fans chipped in to share their assesment from Alabama’s slow start:
