Ravens get good news as two players return to practice on Tuesday

The Ravens got good news on Tuesday as two players returned to practice

The Baltimore Ravens saw the injury bug bite them quite a bit during the 2021 season. It ended up being one of the key factors in an 8-9 finish for the team as they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Baltimore has seen a few of their players miss time throughout 2022 training camp with injuries, but got news on that front during Tuesday’s practice. Both wide receiver Tylan Wallace and center Tyler Linderbaum were back on the field, signaling their first return to action in Owings Mills since their injuries.

Linderbaum got rolled up on during a training camp practice, injuring his foot. He hasn’t played in any preseason action up to this point, and could get some key reps against the Washington Commanders in Week 3. Wallace got injured early in the team’s Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans, but now will look to impress over the remaining duration of the offseason.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson discusses chemistry with WR Rashod Bateman

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson talked about his chemistry with wide receiver Rashod Bateman

The Baltimore Ravens begin their 2022 regular season on Sept. 11 against the New York Jets, and one of the questions asked by many leading up to it is how the team will look at the wide receiver position. Baltimore opted to not select a wide receiver after trading away wideout Marquise Brown to the Arizona Cardinals in the 2022 draft, instead trusting their young players at the position such as Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, James Proche II, Tylan Wallace and others.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson spoke to the media following a training camp practice. When asked about building chemistry with Bateman, Jackson said the two have been working with each other and Bateman looks ready to be a No. 1 receiver.

“Yes, he [Rashod Bateman] did [have a nice day today]. I feel it’s [the chemistry] is pretty good. Like I told you guys before, offseason, as soon as we got to working, he was looking pretty good then. And we had probably one hiccup day. When we were back out here, we had a little vet day, a mini-vet day, but other than that, he’s been looking pretty sharp. He’s been looking good – looking like a receiver [No.] 1, for sure.”

Bateman is entering his second season and is poised to have an increased role following the departure of Brown. Last season, Bateman had 46 receptions for 515 yards and one touchdown in 12 games played. He showed his ability to move the chains as well as his route running prowess, impressing during his time on the field.

Jackson and Bateman didn’t have a lot of time together on the field in 2021, but they’ve clearly established a connection heading into the 2022 season. If both are healthy, they could prove to be an extremely dangerous duo for opposing defenses.

Ravens WR Devin Duvernay shares thoughts on WR Rashod Bateman

Ravens wide receiver Devin Duvernay shared his thoughts on fellow wide receiver Rashod Bateman

During the 2022 NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens traded away wide receiver Marquise Brown, which many saw as a surprise. The team also lost veteran wide receiver Sammy Watkins in free agency and cut wide receiver Miles Boykin, leaving plenty of snaps and targets up for grabs at the position.

What Baltimore has left at the wide receiver position are talented young players such as Rashod Bateman, James Proche II, Devin Duvernay, Tylan Wallace and others. Following a training camp practice, Duvernay spoke to the media. When asked if he has seen a difference in Bateman since he’s expected to have a big role, Duvernay said Bateman is one that leads by example.

“I’ll definitely say he’s a lead by example, chime in here and there. But [he] leads by example, does the right thing all the time. [He] knows where to be, he’s in the right spot and he just encourages the young guys to be on their ‘Ps’ and ‘Qs’ when they’re out on the field. This could be taken away from you any day, and you just have to continue to work and play every day like it’s your last.”

With the many departures at the wide receiver position, Bateman is the team’s new No. 1 wideout and expected to have a massive role. The second-year wide receiver will look to add on to what he was able to do during his rookie campaign, where he finished with 46 receptions for 512 yards and a touchdown.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh shares update on WR James Proche II

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh provided an injury update on wide receiver James Proche II following Thursday’s preseason game

The Baltimore Ravens won their first preseason game of 2022 on Thursday over the Tennessee Titans by the score of 23-10. The victory marked Baltimore’s 21st consecutive preseason win, a record that dates back to 2015.

One player who was not on the field during the game was wide receiver James Proche II, who had missed Tuesday’s practice for an undisclosed reason. Following the game on Thursday, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was asked about the status of Proche.

“Yeah, he’s got a little soft tissue deal, so we’ll see. It’s not going to be too long, a week or two. So that’s where it’s at. Kind of a camp thing.”

If Proche takes the full two weeks to recover, it would put the wide receiver ready to play come Week 1 in the regular season. The Ravens may not want to risk rushing Proche back to fast and risk reinjury, but the current group of Baltimore receivers is getting somewhat thin

Fellow wide receiver Tylan Wallace is also dealing with an injury. He left Thursday’s preseason game during the first quarter. Harbaugh later said Wallace suffered a minor knee sprain and was unsure how long he’ll miss.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Tennessee Titans by the final score of 23-10 in Week 1 of the 2022 preseason, extending their record preseason winning streak to 21-straight games. There were plenty of great flashes by many different players, but they didn’t get out of the game completely unscathed.

Wide receiver Tylan Wallace left the game in the first half with what was classified as a knee injury. After the contest, head coach John Harbaugh gave an update on the wideout, saying that the former Oklahoma State star suffered a minor knee sprain and wasn’t sure how long how long he’d be out for.

Baltimore has seen injuries impact their wide receiver room throughout training camp, with Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, James Proche, Slade Bolden and Bailey Gaither all missing time. It’s unclear how long Wallace will be out, but it could prompt the team to bring in a veteran option if they feel like they’re getting too thin at the position.

The Baltimore Ravens are going to be relying on their young wide receivers to step up and make an impact during the 2022 season, especially after the trade of wideout Marquise Brown to the Arizona Cardinals. Rashod Bateman has taken over the No. 1 role in the group, but others such as Devin Duvernay, James Proche II and Tylan Wallace are expected to take big leaps.

During Baltimore’s opening preseason game against the Tennessee Titans, Wallace left the game with what was classified as a knee injury. He was deemed questionable to return to the contest.

The Ravens are already lacking even somewhat experienced options in their wide receiver room, and Wallace, a fourth-round pick in 2021, has a bit of NFL action under his belt. He has had somewhat of a quiet training camp so far, so hopefully he’ll be able to return to action soon to showcase his talent.

Ravens WR coach Tee Martin believes WR James Proche II is taking the next step

Ravens wide receiver coach Tee Martin talked about how wide receiver James Proche II is taking the next step

The Baltimore Ravens traded away wide receiver Marquise Brown during the 2022 NFL draft, which came as a shock to many different people. They also have chosen not to replace him on the roster through the draft or through free agency so far, which also caught a lot of people off guard.

Baltimore will be relying on a multitude of young talent at the position in 2022, including James Proche II. Wide receivers coach Tee Martin was asked about Proche after a training camp practice, and praised the third-year player for taking the next step.

“He’s doing excellent. He had a really good camp last season, and I think he’s doing even better this year, because he’s taken the next step – another year of experience. He played a little bit more in games last year, and he understands the opportunity in front of him. So, he’s attacking it every day. He’s asking a lot of great questions, he’s playing three positions for us and playing lights out. So, I look forward to seeing him play next week, as well.”

Proche is one of the many homegrown receivers that has the potential to play a massive role in the Baltimore offense in 2022. He has shown many different flashes throughout his first two years as a professional, and should have plenty of opportunities to deliver this season.

Ravens WR coach Tee Martin shares what he’s seen from WR Tylan Wallace

Ravens wide receiver coach Tee Martin discussed what he’s seen from wide receiver Tylan Wallace

The Baltimore Ravens have four players from their 2020 and 2021 draft classes that are looking to make massive impacts at the wide receiver position. Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, James Proche II and Tylan Wallace are all still very young, but each has the talent to make a surprising level of contributions when it comes to the Baltimore offense in 2022.

Ravens wide receiver coach Tee Martin was asked about what he’s seen out of Wallace, who’s a second-year player out of Oklahoma State. Martin talked about how he has great hands and is a really good route runner, as well as the fact that he has a role to play.

“[Tylan Wallace has] great hands, [he’s] a really good route runner and very tough and physical. I got a chance to see that on special teams. He was a guy that, coming in, I didn’t know if he would play like that on special teams, and he really proved to us how tough he was on special teams. And it did – it translated to the games, where later in the season, we depended on him to do some stuff in the run game for us, as well as in some empty formations and things of that nature. He had a role to play, and he did a good job later in the season, and that role will expand as we move forward.”

Wallace only caught two passes for 23 yards during the 2021 season, but the flashes that he was able to show were an enticing glimpse of what he can bring to the table with more snaps. It seems as if the former fourth-round pick will have plenty of opportunities to showcase who he is as a wideout in 2022, something that he seemingly intends to take full advantage of.

Is there more than meets the eye to Baltimore’s receiving corps?

On the surface, Baltimore’s receiving corps doesn’t offer much for fantasy. Is that accurate, though?

Despite being the first wide receiver to top 1,000 yards for the Baltimore Ravens since Mike Wallace in 2016, Marquise Brown was traded to the Arizona Cardinals on draft day in exchange for a first-round pick. That move can be interpreted in one of two ways: Either the team was convinced Brown wasn’t a true No. 1 receiver, or Rashod Bateman is ready to take a leap.

Perhaps it’s a bit of both.

Regardless, between the Brown deal and Sammy Watkins signing with the Green Bay Packers, the Ravens find themselves minus two of their top three receivers in terms of yardage from 2021. Of course, the caveat to that is the presence of tight end Mark Andrews (107-1,361-9), who is the real No. 1 option in Baltimore no matter what’s happening outside.

Still, Brown and Watkins were collectively targeted 195 times last season, and those passes will have to go somewhere else in 2022. Let’s see what options quarterback Lamar Jackson will have as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.

Pro Football Focus weighs in on Ravens’ WR corps in rankings list

Pro Football Focus put out a rankings list of all 32 NFL wide receiver groups

When it comes to the Baltimore Ravens, there are many things to think of. From a tough defense to a strong running game, there are plenty of things that Baltimore has gotten right on a consistent basis. However, many don’t give credit to their wide receiver position, which hasn’t been the greatest of strengths for the team.

During the 2022 NFL draft, the Ravens traded away wide receiver Marquise Brown after he made it clear he wanted to play elsewhere. The team also lost veteran wideout Sammy Watkins in free agency and moved on from pass catcher Miles Boykin as well.

What Baltimore has left at the position are talented young players such as Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay and James Proche II, Tylan Wallace and others. Each of those four have made plays in the regular season, even if there’s only a relatively small sample size.

In an article published by Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus, he ranked the receiving corps of each NFL team for the upcoming season. The wide receiver groups were ranked in four tiers, and the Ravens came in at last tier, titled “likely a weakness. Baltimore’s group finished at No. 29 out of all 32 teams.

Linsey noted the only thing keeping Baltimore from falling any lower on the list is their star at tight end in Mark Andrews.

“The biggest thing keeping the Ravens from falling any lower is Mark Andrews — the second-most valuable tight end in 2021, per PFF WAR. The Marquise Brown trade puts a lot on the shoulders of unproven options, including Devin Duvernay, Tylan Wallace and James Proche, even if Baltimore uses heavy personnel often.”

Bateman appears to be the clear-cut wide receiver one on the team since the departure of Brown. Linsey believes Bateman needs to have a breakout year in order for the team to succeed in the passing game.

“Rashod Bateman stands out as the clear No. 1 at wide receiver after recording a 64.9 PFF grade on just over 600 snaps as a rookie. He missed the early portion of his rookie season due to injury and didn’t have a healthy Lamar Jackson at quarterback for much of the season after he returned to the lineup. He’s a potential second-year breakout candidate, and the Ravens need him to make that happen.”

Regardless of who slots in where when the start of the season, Baltimore has plenty of candidates at receiver who are willing to put in the work and step up if their number is called. While the group might not be as highly regarded as others right now, there’s a chance that as the 2022 season progresses they will begin to garner some respect as quality, up-and-coming bunch.
