Seahawks release P Ty Zentner from practice squad

Seahawks release P Ty Zentner from practice squad

Ty Zentner, we hardly knew you. The Seattle Seahawks signed Zentner to the practice squad late last week in case veteran punter Michael Dickson wasn’t medically cleared to play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14. The replacement option has already been released from the practice squad.

Dickson was questionable heading into the weekend. He suffered a back injury in the fourth quarter of Seattle’s Week 13 victory over the New York Jets. Spasms prevented Dickson from punting in the dying moments of that contest.

Dickson was active and available versus the Cardinals. He punted on five occasions for 265 yards, averaging an outstanding 53 yards per punt. Dickson’s longest punt went for a booming 61 yards and he placed four of them inside the opponent’s 20-yard line with one touchback. He showed no ill effects of the injury suffered against the Jets.

Zentner is a second-year punter that’s endured stints with various franchises in one-and-a-half seasons. The former Kansas State standout punter spent time with Seattle’s NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams earlier this year. Zentner punted seven times for the Rams, totaling 281 yards (40.1 yards per punt). He previously appeared in nine career games with the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans.

Zentner will continue being a popular league-wide target for teams with punter injuries. Thankfully, Dickson is healthy and available for Seattle heading into a showdown with the Green Bay Packers in Week 15.

Rams pick their new punter for Sunday with Ethan Evans out

The Rams signed two punters to the practice squad with Ethan Evans sick, but only Ty Zentner was elevated for Sunday’s game

Rams punter Ethan Evans came down with an illness this week and was unable to practice on Thursday or Friday. The Rams have already ruled him out for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, so they’ll have a new punter and holder for this week.

They signed Ryan Sanborn to the practice squad on Thursday and then added Ty Zentner on Friday, but only one of them was elevated for Week 9. The Rams are going with Zentner, who’s played nine games in his career (all in 2023) and averaged 44.9 yards per punt.

In addition to Zentner, the Rams also promoted linebacker Elias Neal from the practice squad for this weekend, so he’ll provide depth behind Christian Rozeboom, Omar Speights and Jake Hummel.

Rams sign punter to practice squad for 2nd straight day

Ethan Evans must really be sick because the Rams have signed a punter to the practice squad in each of the last two days.

(This post has been updated to provide new information)

The Los Angeles Rams set off some (mildly quiet) alarms on Thursday when they signed a punter to the practice squad. We then learned that Ethan Evans missed practice with an illness, which explains why the Rams brought in rookie punter Ryan Sanborn.

Evans must really be sick because for the second straight day, the Rams signed a punter to the practice squad. They added Ty Zentner on Friday, raising questions about whether Evans will be able to play on Sunday against the Seahawks.

To make room for Zentner on the practice squad, the Rams waived center Mike McAllister, so they now have three punters in the building right now. That’s atypical for a team, to say the least.

Special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn said Thursday that he hopes Evans will be able to play, but we’ll get more clarity on Friday when the final injury report is released.

Update: Sean McVay said Friday that Evans has been ruled out for Sunday’s game with an illness and the Rams will decide whether to elevate Sanborn or Zentner from the practice squad.

Giants work out several punters with Jamie Gillan injured

The New York Giants worked out Nolan Cooney and four other punters after Jamie Gillan (hamstring) popped up on the injury report.

New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan was a surprise addition to the injury report on Friday, being listed as questionable with a left hamstring strain.

With only two days before their Sunday night kickoff, the Giants hosted several punters in the event Gillan is unable to play against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Among those in attendance was Nolan Cooney, a former Syracuse punter who has played for the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In four career games, Cooney has punted 13 times for 592 yards (45.5 ypp) with two being downed inside the 20-yard line.

Punters Pressley Harvin, Matt Haack, Lou Hedley, and Ty Zentner were also in attendance for the private workouts.

None of the five punters who worked out were immediately signed but that could come on Saturday if the Giants opt to place linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux (wrist) on injured reserve (IR).

Given that Gillan also serves as the team’s holder on point after and field goal attempts, whoever the Giants sign would also have to take on that responsibility.

Titans offseason preview for specialists: Pending free agents, biggest needs

In our final offseason preview for the Titans, we take a look at the team’s specialists.

While a lot went wrong for the Tennessee Titans in 2023, one area where the team thrived was with its specialists, although that group did not make it through the campaign unscathed.

Kicker Nick Folk did miss some big kicks but was stellar overall, making 29 of 30 field goal attempts and 28 of 30 extra points. His 96.7 percent success rate with field goals was tops in the NFL.

Punter Ryan Stonehouse was on pace for another record-breaking season before he fell victim to atrocious special teams play. His replacement and fellow punter Ty Zentner was solid in Stonehouse’s absence.

Last but not least, long snapper Morgan Cox was once again quiet, which is exactly what you want from the position. He remains one of the very best in the business.

In what is our final offseason preview for the Titans, we take a look at the specialists who are under contract, pending free agents, and the team’s biggest needs.

What Titans should do with pending free-agent specialists

The Titans have two specialists set to hit the open market this offseason. We take a look at if Tennessee should keep them or let them go.

One of the few bright spots for the Tennessee Titans in 2023, the team’s specialists all performed at a high level.

Kicker Nick Folk, who was acquired via trade right before the start of the season, was great in his role and stabilized what has been a problematic position for the Titans in recent years.

Punter Ryan Stonehouse was on pace for yet another record-breaking season and Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods before suffering a season-ending injury against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13.

His replacement, Ty Zentner, was about as good as the Titans could have hoped for in relief of one of the best punters in the game.

Last but not least, long snapper Morgan Cox was his usual elite self.

Of the four aforementioned players, two of them will be free agents, but the Titans will also have to make a decision on one of the others who are under contract.

Let’s play some keep or let go with the trio, shall we?

Titans promote 2, elevate 2 ahead of game vs. Dolphins

The Titans announced a total of four roster moves ahead of their Week 14 game against the Dolphins.

The Tennessee Titans announced a total of four moves ahead of their “Monday Night Football” game against the Miami Dolphins.

The team announced it has promoted both punter Ty Zentner and running back Jonathan Ward to the active roster from the practice squad.

Also, linebacker JoJo Domann and defensive lineman Marlon Davidson are standard practice squad elevations for the game against the Dolphins. Both will revert back following the contest.

Zentner will be making his Titans debut as he replaces injured punter Ryan Stonehouse, who is out for the season. Ward will serve as the third running back behind Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears and will help on special teams.

If they’re active and see the field, Domann and Davidson would also be making their Titans debuts.

Domann was signed this week and interim special teams coordinator Tom Quinn mentioned him as someone who could serve as a personal protector for punts, along with Ward.

Davidson was inked to the practice squad back in October but has yet to play a game.

The Titans and Dolphins will kick off from Hard Rock Stadium at 8:15 p.m. EST.

Titans promote Otis Reese, add 2 to practice squad

The Titans promoted Otis Reese to the active roster and officially added punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad.

The Tennessee Titans announced a trio of moves on Wednesday, with one of them being the signing of punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad.

The signing of Zentner was reported earlier in the day. Here’s what I wrote about him after news broke of him being added to the practice squad:

An undrafted free-agent signing of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 out of Kansas State, Zentner lost a training camp battle against Arryn Siposs, which led to his being waived and then signed by the Houston Texans.

Zentner appeared in four games for the Texans, attempting 14 punts in that span. He tallied a gross average yards per punt of 42.1 and a net average of 38.6.

The 25-year-old was then waived following the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after punter Cameron Johnston returned from injury.

This is Reese’s second stint on the active roster this season after he initially made the 53-man roster out of training camp before later being waived and brought back on the practice squad.

He’ll take the roster spot of fellow linebacker and now-former Titan, Monty Rice, who was waived on Tuesday. Reese has appeared in two games for Tennessee this season, with all of his snaps coming on special teams.

In addition to adding Zentner and promoting Reese, the Titans also added linebacker JoJo Domann to the practice squad. The Nebraska product last played in 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 16 games while playing only on special teams.

Titans signing P Ty Zentner to the practice squad

The Titans are reportedly signing punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad.

With punter Ryan Stonehouse out for the season, the Tennessee Titans are set to sign a new punter.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Titans are signing punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad after bringing him in for a tryout along with six others on Tuesday.

The Titans do have one open spot on their active roster after the team waived linebacker Monty Rice on Tuesday, so it may not be long before Zentner gets promoted.

Report: Texans sign P Ty Zentner to active roster, add RB Gerrid Doaks, WR Jared Wayne to practice squad

The Houston Texans have signed P Ty Zentner to their active roster while adding RB Gerrid Doaks and WR Jared Wayne to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have made moves at the outreaches of their roster and also to their practice squad.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans have signed punter Ty Zentner from the practice squad to the active roster. The move comes after working out veteran punters Pat O’Donnell and Matt Haack as the club works without Cam Johnston, who is on injured reserve.

Adding Zentner to the active roster allows Houston to have another standard elevation from the practice squad for game day. It also allows two more for the Texans to use on Zentner before they would have to sign him to the active roster, which occurred nonetheless.

The Texans are also signing former Miami Dolphins 2021 seventh-round running back Gerrid Doaks and former Pittsburgh receiver Jared Wayne, who joined the Texans as a priority free agent following the 2023 NFL draft.
