Penn State in top four for Class of 2023 four-star tight end

Penn State is in the top four for a coveted four-star tight end in the Class of 2023

Penn State is closing in on signing its top-rated recruiting class under James Franklin with an impressive Class of 2022 haul. But the work on the 2023 class is already underway for the Nittany Lions. Already with one recruit on the board for the next recruiting cycle, Penn State is officially in stiff competition for one of its top tight end targets for the Class of 2023.

Ty Lockwood, a four-star tight end from Tennessee, recently announced his top four as his recruiting process continues. Penn State was among those in Lockwood’s top four, and it looks like Penn State will have some serious competition to work against.

As shared by Chad Simmons of On3 Sports, via Twitter, Lockwood has listed Penn State, Ohio State, Florida State, and South Carolina in his top four.

while we do not know when Lockwood is expected to make his decision, this will certainly be one to keep a close eye on.

Lockwood recently made an unofficial visit to Florida State as power conference offers continue to come in for the Tennessee native. It was reportedly the first visit he has taken, and no official visits are currently reported. Penn State extended its offer last November.

Four-star 2023 tight end has Ohio State in top four

Ohio State appeared in the top four of 4-star 2023 tight end Ty Lockwood on Saturday. Could he be OSU’s first commitment for that cycle?

As the recruiting world turns, so do the writings of our lives.

We continue to get news circulating on the recruiting front for Ohio State. The 2021 class is now complete with the addition of 5-star J.T. Tuimoloau — albeit in late fashion — and the 2022 class is looking otherworldly. But we’re still awaiting that first 2023 prospect to flash a little scarlet and gray.

That could come soon, and it’s possible that it comes in the form of 4-star tight end Ty Lockwood. He released his top four programs on Saturday with the help of recruiting analyst Chad Simmons, and the Buckeyes are in the mix.

At 6-foot, 5-inches, and 225-pounds, Lockwood is out of Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tennesee. He is ranked as the No. 98 prospect in the class and fifth tight end overall according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

There’s no clear timetable or leader that seems to be out there, but the word is that he could be making a decision soon. The other three schools in his top four are Florida State, Penn State, and South Carolina. We’ll keep abreast of anything further that develops.

4-star Tennessee tight end: Clemson’s ‘top-notch at everything they do’

Since taking over as the tight ends coach, in addition to being Clemson’s offensive coordinator, Tony Elliott has made sure to recruit some of the nation’s top tight ends. One of those tight ends is Thompson’s Station (TN.) Independence 2023 …

Since taking over as the tight ends coach, in addition to being Clemson’s offensive coordinator, Tony Elliott has made sure to recruit some of the nation’s top tight ends.

One of those tight ends is Thompson’s Station (TN.) Independence 2023 four-star Ty Lockwood, who has remained on Elliott’s radar after his visit to Clemson earlier last month.

Lockwood (6-5, 225) is the No. 3 ranked prospect in the state of Tennessee and No. 4 tight end prospect in the Class of 2023, per 247Sports Composite.

He hasn’t been hearing much from Clemson lately. He has the ability to reach out to the coaching staff but says the Tigers are really strict on following the rules, which he absolutely respects a lot.

“As soon as Sept. 1 hits my junior year, we’ll be able to talk,” Lockwood told The Clemson Insider. “They stand by that. I’m trying to get a call here with them soon and I’ll probably have to set it up.”

Once Lockwood is able to get on the phone with Elliott, he’ll ask about when would be a good time for him to get up for a game this season.

“That’s definitely something I want to do because that was a great school to get out to,” he said. “They’re top-notch at everything they do. If I could get out there for a game or a visit on a day, that would be great.”

Since his visit, Lockwood has been left impressed with one of the best programs in the nation.

“Even though I don’t have the offer, they’re going to be high on the list no matter what,” Lockwood said. “It’s a great school, they’re great people, obviously they’re a great team. When I was there, I was getting to know the coaches there, every single one was just a great dude.

“I thought it was kind of cool how Dabo, he hired them all himself and he knows every single one’s background, where they came from and what they do for him. Right there, I could kind of see the brotherhood piece in the whole entire program, so that was good for me to see.”

That’s exactly what Lockwood is looking for at the next level — a brotherhood.

In addition to Clemson, he also made stops at South Carolina, Ohio State and Michigan this summer. Based on some of his visits, Lockwood has been able to lock down some of the more important factors that he’s looking for in a school at the next level.

“Like I was just saying, the brotherhood piece is going to be easily one of the top parts of it,” he said. “I went to a couple of schools and I saw it right away, I saw the brotherhood piece and I definitely bumped those up a little bit. I also went to some schools that didn’t have it and I kind of knocked those ones off the list. That’s probably the biggest piece for me, having a brotherhood.”

A big piece of advice that he’s consistently heard from coaches around the country is to make his decision for the next 40 years, not the next four. Obviously, academics will hold a major part in Lockwood’s decision.

“It’s doing pretty good,” Lockwood said of his recruitment process. “It started to get a little bit crazy in June, so I kind of had to get control of that at the end, but it’s been pretty great since.”

Right now, Lockwood is focused on winning a State Championship. He’s a team player, first and foremost, and wants to make sure all the guys around him are getting better.

As for Lockwood himself, he’s focused on improving his speed and explosiveness. He also characterized himself as a “decent blocker,” but says he could definitely be better.

With that being said, what are his strengths as a tight end?

“Getting open in space in the passing game and also I’m able to peel off a block in the run game,” Lockwood said. “Like I was saying, get open and I can be a safety blanket for my quarterback. If I’m running a route and I can break off of it, find a soft spot and you can hit me right there. In the running game, if there’s a block that needs to be made, I can make it, obviously.

“That’s what you got to do as a tight end and I try to make myself as complete as I can be and with that, you have to run block, pass block and you gotta be a receiver too.”

Ohio State makes offer to 2023 Tight End

It’s never too early to begin looking ahead at the next crop of talent at Ohio State. The Buckeyes have offered to a 2023 tight end.

We are only two months into 2021 and we’re already talking about 2023 recruits? Yep, that’s the way things work when you’re trying to get your hands on the best.

Ty Lockwood of Thompson’s Station, TN let the world know via Twitter that Ohio State has shown interest in having him be part of the family. Lockwood is 6 feet, 5 inches, and 220 pounds and is only a high school sophomore. Lockwood does not have a star rating just yet but a quick look at Lockwood’s list of suiters says this kid has some serious potential.

So, why would the Buckeyes be going after a sophomore tight end so early in the game? Well, they have verbal commits at the tight end position in Bennett Christian and Benji Gosnell in the 2022 class and wouldn’t take more than that, so time to look ahead to the future.

After many years of underutilizing the tight end position, the Ohio State coaches are finally taking advantage of some very skilled playmakers on the receiving side of the ball. And recruits are taking notice knowing they can make a name for themselves in scarlet and gray.

Tennessee offers in-state tight end product from Williamson County

The Vols are looking for prospects to add to the 2022 recruiting class.

Tennessee has spent a lot of time recruiting the Nashville area under Jeremy Pruitt, and the Vols extended an offer to another prospect out of the elite Williamson County high school football region, 6-6A.

Ty Lockwood of Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tennessee received his offer this week from UT.

Lockwood stands at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, and plays for head coach Scott Blade at Independence. Though Lockwood is listed as a tight end, he plays several different roles for the Independence Eagles offense.

This high school football region has produced talents like 4-star wideout Walker Merrill, a Brentwood High School product who is committed to Tennessee. Ravenwood High School is another school in the region, that has produced Clemson tight end commit Jake Briningstool and Michigan linebacker commit Junior Colson in the 2021 cycle alone.

Independence’s 2020 season came to an end in the second round of the 6A playoffs in Tennessee in a dramatic loss to Brentwood on Friday.

Lockwood still has one more year of high school football to be played and also holds offers from Ole Miss, Tulane and Virginia.
