Jets CB Sauce Gardner not happy with Pete Carroll’s joke on Twitter

It appears there is a bit of a cross country rivalry brewing between the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets… or perhaps just Sauce Gardner.

Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner recently made headlines with comments regarding his draft process, and he wasn’t exactly thrilled with the Seahawks. According to Gardner, he says he was uncomfortable during his interview with the Seahawks because Pete Carroll was too close to him.

Well, Gardner’s comments certainly made their way to Carroll’s attention, and Seattle’s 71 year old coach responded to the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year on Twitter.

It does not take long when browsing through Carroll’s Twitter account to see he is not the most active user. Tweets from him are infrequent, and understandably mostly Seahawks related content. Clearly, Gardner’s comments struck a nerve with Carroll enough for him to poke a little fun online.

However, Gardner did not seem to appreciate the joke and fired back on his Twitter. He also continued to talk about it on his live Twitch stream, accusing Seattle’s PR team of merely being jealous of his Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

It appears there is a bit of a cross country rivalry brewing between the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets… or perhaps just Sauce Gardner. However, both sides will have to wait at least a year to duke it out on the field, as the Seahawks and Jets are not scheduled to play each other in 2023.

Unless of course, they meet in the Super Bowl. If that’s the case, bring a jacket because Hell obviously froze over.

Richard Sherman reacts to still-developing Saints cornerback situation

The New Orleans Saints had been linked to free agent cornerback Richard Sherman, but he didn’t seem optimistic about signing when asked.

Richard Sherman was linked to the New Orleans Saints in the early days of free agency, but little came of that buzz. Sherman did recently list the Saints among a group of four teams he had met with — he represents himself in free agency — alongside the two teams he’s played for (the 49ers and Seahawks), plus the Raiders.

Sherman has spoken about the lukewarm interest he’d received from teams in free agency, explaining that he doesn’t anticipate any real offers until after the NFL draft. While the picks are still rolling in, and things could change in a hurry, it appears the Saints’ third-round pick of Stanford corner Paulson Adebo could take New Orleans off Sherman’s radar. While fielding questions from fans during a Twitch streaming event, Sherman mulled the situation with the Saints.

“It’s gotta be a ‘want’ and it’s got to be a respect level with everything,” Sherman said of interest between himself and potential suitors. “So,  you know what I mean, Kris being there, they just drafted a corner. They don’t seem to me to be a ‘Y.'”

It’s unclear exactly what Sherman meant by that, but context clues suggest he doesn’t see the Saints as a ‘Yes’ in fitting what he’s looking for. He would be, at best, competing with Adebo to start in New Orleans. Considering Adebo’s talents and the coaching he’ll receive from Kris Richard, who Sherman has seen develop prospects firsthand, there are going to be more appealing destinations for him out there.

And that doesn’t even get into the contract details. If Sherman wants a starting gig and to be paid like a starting cornerback, pulling in $8 million or more per year, the Saints aren’t likely to hit on both points. It makes sense for him to consider other options at this early stage.

Maybe things look differently in a few days. The Saints could very well find the money he wants and offer him a legitimate shot at continuing to start. It’s just a situation where we’ll all have to wait and see.

Saints players make good-natured recruiting pitch to Lions corner Darius Slay

New Orleans Saints players Cameron Jordan and Marshon Lattimore made a joking recruiting pitch to Detroit Lions Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay.

Don’t let anyone tell you that the New Orleans Saints are taking it easy during the offseason. Team leaders like defensive end Cameron Jordan and cornerback Marshon Lattimore are hard at work on Twitter, doing their part to try and talk Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay, a three-time Pro Bowler, into bailing on his squad to come chase a Super Bowl ring in New Orleans.

Yeah, that’s not happening. Slay is entering a contract year, and it appears he wants to join Xavien Howard and Josh Norman at the top of the market in the “$15 million per year club.” That’s not a price the Saints are going to pay for a 29-year-old cornerback, especially with Lattimore himself up for a new contract soon (at least the Saints can make things easier by picking up his fifth-year option).

But Jordan isn’t about to let reality get in the way of his dreams. He responded to a Twitter post from Slay advertising a giveaway on his video game streaming channel by jokingly asking if Slay was giving away his “rights and loyalties to the Lions” — and pointing out how much fun it would be for Slay to play alongside Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins, who also goes by Jackrabbit.

Then Lattimore chimed in, laughing about how “That wouldn’t be fair,” given the collection of skills sets; as seen in the six combined Pro Bowl appearances between Lattimore, Slay, and Jenkins. And that caught Slay’s attention. Good luck completing passes against that stacked secondary.

Still, this is nothing more than a daydream. Slay can’t get out of his Lions contract without demanding a trade, and he’s been too loyal to the organization that drafted him to do that. He’s set to play out the final year of his Lions contract on a salary cap hit north of $13.3 million. That’s just too much to tie up at one position considering that the Saints already have $11.25 million tied up with Jenkins. But wouldn’t it be fun if they could pull that off? At least Slay seems to think so.

While a trade for Slay is not likely, we should expect some movement at cornerback for the Saints this offseason. They only have three corners under contract right now between Lattimore, Jenkins, and veteran slot corner Patrick Robinson. Special teams ace and backup Justin Hardee is a restricted free agent, while starters Eli Apple and P.J. Williams will test unrestricted free agency. It wouldn’t be a big shock if some bold move does end up manifesting, whether in free agency or the draft.
