2023 Ryder Cup in Italy sets TV viewership record

It was a record-breaking week near Rome.

More than 270,000 people from 100 different countries attended the 2023 Ryder Cup to watch the Europeans defeat the Americans, 16½-11½, and reclaim the cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome, Italy.

Even more watched from home.

On Tuesday, Ryder Cup Europe shared early numbers that showed a rise in average viewership on Sky Sports, particularly in the United Kingdom, which saw a 38 percent increase compared to the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits and a 25 percent increase from the last European-hosted Cup in 2018 at Le Golf National near Paris.

“The 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy once again underlined the global appeal and continued growth of one of the world’s leading sporting events,” said Guy Kinnings, Executive Director of the Ryder Cup. “This year’s contest, played against the backdrop of the historic city of Rome, truly connected with fans around the world, and our early figures show significant increases in engagement even from the recent record-breaking editions.”

While the 2023 edition was the most watched Ryder Cup ever on Sky Sports, the NBC Sports coverage in the United States left fans wanting more.

Not even two hours into the coverage of the Friday foursomes matches and television viewers who were awake at 1 a.m. ET for the start were already fed up with the coverage (or lack thereof).

Airing on USA Network, the broadcast missed the introductions and tee shots from the third match of Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka vs. Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa and showed more commercials than golf shots. This year’s broadcast featured a score bug in the bottom right of the screen that showed the matches and live results, which was a nice innovation, except when the coverage didn’t provide context for how those scores came to be.

The 2025 Ryder Cup, the 45th playing of the biennial bash between the U.S. and Europe, will be held at Bethpage Black in New York.

Primetime in the Swamp: Kickoff, TV info set for LSU at Florida in Week 7

The Tigers will look for their fourth-straight win over the Gators under the lights at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

This year’s iteration of the interdivisional rivalry between Florida and LSU will take place under the lights at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

On Monday, LSU announced that its Week 7 contest in Gainesville on Oct. 15 against the Gators will kick off at 6 p.m. CT in Gainesville. The Tigers are looking for their fourth-straight win against UF, with the last two coming in wild fashion between the Marco Wilson cleat-toss and last year’s 49-42 shootout.

It will be a matchup between first-year head coaches in [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and Billy Napier, whose team currently sits at 3-2 but has started SEC play at 0-2 with losses to Kentucky and Tennessee. Napier, who previously coached at Louisiana, will hope to get his first league win on Saturday at home against Missouri.

Meanwhile, LSU hosts No. 8 Tennessee this weekend and will look to score a signature win early in the Kelly era.

Kickoff time announced for LSU’s contest vs. Tennessee on Oct. 8

The Tigers will take on Tennessee at 11 a.m. CT in Week 6.

The Tigers won’t have the benefit of a night game at Death Valley in what could be one of the toughest matchups of the season.

On Monday, the SEC announced game times for Week 6 matchups, and LSU’s home game against Tennessee on Oct. 8 will be an 11 a.m. CT local kickoff in Baton Rouge on ESPN. Despite the fact that the Vols will likely still be ranked in the top 10 entering this game, CBS chose AuburnGeorgia and AlabamaTexas A&M for its afternoon/night doubleheader.

This will mark the first non-evening kickoff for the Tigers this season. Week 5’s contest against Auburn on Saturday is set to begin at 6 p.m.

Tennessee is coming off a big win at Neyland Stadium against Florida on Saturday, which marked just the second time UT has beaten the Gators since 2004. The Volunteers have a bye this weekend, and the Tigers are favored against Auburn. We could be setting up for a massive cross-division showdown in two weeks.

But if LSU is going to beat a red-hot Tennessee team, it may have to do so while dealing with the sluggishness that often comes from morning kickoffs.

LSU vs Florida State: TV commentators announced for Tigers’ opener

LSU’s opener will be called by one of ESPN’s top voices.

LSU and Florida State kicking off in New Orleans is exactly one month away, and those who are planning to watch on television now know who will be calling the game.

ESPN announced that Joe Tessitore and Greg McElroy will be in the booth while Katie George handles the sideline reporting. Tessitore is one of ESPN’s primetime announcers and with LSU in the Sunday slot, it’s no surprise to see a big-time crew get the assignment.

It hasn’t been that long since LSU last played in the opening Sunday game. In 2018, the Tigers beat Miami 33-17 in Joe Burrow’s first game with the program.

The game is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ABC. It’s LSU’s opener, but Florida State will begin its season the week prior with a matchup against Duquesne.
