Jaren Kanak looking more and more comfortable at linebacker

Making his third start of the season, Jaren Kanak is looking more and more comfortable at linebacker for the Oklahoma Sooners.

There was 9:57 left in the third quarter. The [autotag]Tulsa Golden Hurricane[/autotag] had driven the field with ease for the third time in their last four drives.

It was third-and-goal from the 2. Tulsa quarterback [autotag]Cardell Williams[/autotag] dropped back to pass, and [autotag]Jaren Kanak[/autotag] came rushing through the hole, flushing Williams out to his right.

At this moment, my first thought was, “Well he’s going to run it in for the score.”

I thought that because that’s what I had grown accustomed to with the Oklahoma Sooners defense the last decade.

But that’s not what happened. Instead, Kanak continued to gain ground on Williams, forcing an errant throw that should have been picked off by Peyton Bowen. Tulsa was held to a field goal and never was close to scoring again.

Why am I highlighting that play? It’s not a play that will be remembered or will show up on the stat sheet, but that’s a play Oklahoma doesn’t make in recent memory because they don’t have the athlete playing linebacker as they do now with Kanak and [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag].

Kanak told reporters the confidence the defense is playing with starts with Stutsman.

“When you have a leader like that, someone that everyone can get behind that lifts everyone up, it’s awesome to play behind someone like that,” Kanak said.

That confidence is noticeable by everyone playing on the defense so far. You can tell by the way they react to plays and how they don’t look confused as often as a season ago.

That being said, the one negative you could bring up from Saturday’s game is the third-down defense. Tulsa converted 8 of 19 attempts and at one point was 8 of 16.

Kanak said that’s something they have to do a better job of defending.

“Obviously, we struggled a little bit on third down, and that comes with preparation and being more keen on our details,” Kanak said. “Just really buckling down and just being locked into our details and in those situations, not fold and knowing what’s going on.”

This was the only game they’ve struggled on third down defensively. Even then, they held Tulsa under 50% conversion for the game. Eventually, they righted the ship by stopping Tulsa on its final three attempts.

But that wasn’t the only thing they need to improve going forward, this is far from a perfect team, but the confidence from the team this year compared to last year is night and day.

Sooners knocking on the door of the top 15 in latest AP Poll

Oklahoma is now ranked No. 16 in the country after rising three spots in the latest AP Poll after their win over Tulsa.

Oklahoma is slowly building momentum as a team to watch out for. After dominating Tulsa, 66-17, the Sooners continue their ascent in the AP Poll. Oklahoma is No. 16 in the nation in the latest AP Top 25.

Oklahoma looked much better than some of their other counterparts; we saw multiple top-25 teams struggle on Saturday.

At the top, the Georgia Bulldogs remain the top team in the country after they avoided a scare from the South Carolina Gamecocks at home. Behind the Bulldogs, we have Michigan at No. 2 and Texas at No. 3, who slid up one spot. Florida State is No. 4, moving one spot down after struggling with a scrappy Boston College team on the road.

Rounding out the top five is Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans, who were on a bye this week.

In the rest of the top 10, we have Ohio State at No. 6, followed by Penn State, Washington, Notre Dame, and Oregon at 10.

Notably absent from the top 10 is the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are 13th. They looked abysmal in a road game against the University of South Florida. The Crimson Tide pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 17-3 win, but they have big quarterback issues.

Kansas State bows out of the AP Poll after a last-second loss to Missouri. With its loss, Texas and Oklahoma are the lone Big 12 schools in the AP Top 25.

5-star freshman DE Adepoju Adebawore shows flashes of stardom in Sooners win

Adepoju Adebawore showed flashes of what’s to come in his Oklahoma career.

The Oklahoma Sooners are fresh off another dominant performance on the defensive side of the ball to open the 2023 season. The Sooners stifled the [autotag]Tulsa Golden Hurricane[/autotag] offense outside of a rough second quarter.

Multiple players made impacts Saturday, and one of those was five-star freshman defensive end [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag]. The true freshman finished with 2.5 tackles for loss and earned the first sack of his young career.

He told reporters after the game, it felt good to finally get home to the quarterback.

“The first sack is very good, great actually. Just to be out there knowing my coaches trust me enough to be out there to be able to execute and make a couple of big plays,” Adebawore said.

Like [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] last week, Adebawore is entering that territory where it will be hard to keep him off of the field. He already possessed the best pass rush win rate of any Sooner coming into Saturday and put another strong performance together.

Adebawore also said his experience at Oklahoma so far has been everything he imagined when he committed.

“I think it’s been better,” Adebawore said. “Everyone here is very loving. Everyone here is very affectionate. It’s a very family-like place, and I feel comfortable here. So, yes, definitely what I imagined.”

Just watching Adebawore play should bring a huge smile to Sooner fans’ faces. He has a bright future, and on Saturday he showed flashes of what’s to come.

‘I do think it is different’: Brent Venables sees a difference in the 2023 Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a great start in 2023 but are they better than 2022? Where does Brent Venables see the difference?

The Oklahoma Sooners are 3-0 and undefeated in nonconference play for the second year in a row under [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]. Last year the wheels fell off after the Sooners’ hot start; they lost seven of their next 10.

But this year feels different. You can tell there has been a noticeable improvement from the team. In particular on the defensive side of the ball.

They look much more confident in what they are doing and the reading they are supposed to make. The tackling is much better. You aren’t seeing as many busts as a year ago.

Things aren’t perfect. This is not an elite team, but Brent Venables told reporters after the game, he has noticed the improvement.

“I do think it is different,” Venables said. “You’re going to avoid the same result? I don’t know. That will be determined by how our guys stay determined and stay committed and stay focused and not get distracted and not get bored with doing the little things over and over and over.”

That is what will make or break this team going forward. If they do stay committed to the little things. In the second quarter, they didn’t look focused but were able to regroup nicely after halftime, allowing just three points.

For Venables, there are a few areas in which he has really seen improvement. “I do feel like we’ve got a better edge. I think we have more maturity. I think we have a better football IQ. I think we have, again, more competitive depth and again, hunger. A chip on our shoulder.”

But as Venables said, will that result in a better record? That is to be determined. The Sooners have to stay committed to the “little things.”

But for now, as [autotag]Bill Belichick[/autotag] once said, “We’re on to Cincinnati.”

3 stars from the Oklahoma Sooners wire-to-wire domination of Tulsa

Oklahoma fired on all cylinders against Tulsa. Here are this week’s three stars from the Sooners 66-17 win.

The Oklahoma fan base asked for more explosive plays, and Jeff Lebby ensured his offense delivered on Saturday in Tulsa. Oklahoma’s passing offense put up 476 yards and threw for six touchdowns on the way to a 66-17 win.

Oklahoma never trailed and was in complete control throughout. The game was a stark difference from what the Sooners looked like against SMU, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Oklahoma took on the identity of a battering ram against the Mustangs. This week, the offense transformed into long-range combat specialists, opening the passing offense to attack in a variety of ways. It was a sight to behold and allowed Oklahoma to showcase the growth it has experienced in the expansive receiver room.

Defensively, the good times continued to roll as the Sooners held Tulsa under 300 yards of total offense and finished the game with five interceptions. The Sooners turned those five interceptions into 34 points. Overall, it was another complete effort from beginning to end, with complementary football played by Brent Venables’ Sooners.

A handful of players were worthy of recognition for their performance, but we felt these three needed to be highlighted the most.

Jalil Farooq shakes off rough start, finishes strong in Oklahoma’s 66-17 win over Tulsa

After a fumble on the opening kickoff, Oklahoma wide receiver Jalil Farooq had a big day in the win over Tulsa.

The [autotag]Tulsa Golden Hurricane[/autotag] kicked it off to the Oklahoma Sooners to start the game. Back to receive for the Sooners was [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag], who caught the kick and took off.

Farooq returned the ball 62 yards into Tulsa territory, but a nice punch by a Golden Hurricane forced the fumble and Tulsa recovered. You could see Farooq put his head down and trot to the sideline. Several teammates and coaches immediately greeted him to encourage him before his next opportunity to take the field.

The Sooners’ defense picked him up with Gentry Williams’ interception. Two plays later, Farooq got another opportunity. Farooq took a slant 34 yards to the house to put the Sooners up 7-0.

Farooq told reporters after the game, it was good to bounce back after the slow start.

“Me being able to let the mistake be the mistake, learn from it, it’s always the guy you don’t see,” Farooq said. “Next time, I’ve got to grip it tight. So just being able to respond, I felt good after my touchdown. So, just keeping my head in the game and not letting a mistake tear me down.”

Farooq finished with six catches for 126 yards and a touchdown to lead the Sooners in receiving yards. He also provided more than 100 yards on three kick returns.

He’s someone who has been off to a slow start to the season but made several competitive plays in this game. Farooq now has a touchdown in two straight games and eight receptions the last two weeks after being held without a catch in week one.

The Sooners hope he carries that over for the rest of the season.

Five Takeaways from Oklahoma’s dominating win over in-state foe Tulsa

Oklahoma brought the hammer down on in-state foe Tulsa on Saturday as they won 66-17. We have our five takeaways from the game.

Oklahoma wrapped up their nonconference schedule for the 2023 regular season on Saturday with pure domination of their in-state foe, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Oklahoma blew the doors off Tulsa 66-17.

From the outset, the Sooners had a weird start as starting receiver and kick returner Jalil Farooq fumbled the opening kick to Tulsa. But from then on, the Sooners were in control.

The week there was a lot of focus on Oklahoma’s offense and the conservative approach against SMU.

Jeff Lebby answered those concerns quickly, and the defense continued their improved and inspired play on the way to a runaway victory.

With the game fresh on our minds, here are our five takeaways from Oklahoma’s win.

Oklahoma Sooners roll pass the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 66-17

Dillon Gabriel threw five touchdowns and the Sooners had five interceptions on defense to beat Tulsa 66-17 to close nonconference play.

The Oklahoma Sooners ended their nonconference slate undefeated for the seventh year in a row. The Sooners knocked off in-state opponent, the [autotag]Tulsa Golden Hurricane[/autotag] to the tune of 66-17.

The first quarter started off with a massive kick return before [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] was stripped, resulting in the first turnover of the season for the Sooners.

But five plays later, Tulsa took a deep shot that was picked off by [autotag]Gentry Williams[/autotag]. Two plays later, Gabriel found Farooq for the 34-yard touchdown.

The Sooners then forced a punt before the offense went on a methodical 11-play drive resulting in a touchdown pass from Gabriel to [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag]. On the ensuing Tulsa possession, [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] intercepted quarterback Roman Fuller and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

On the following drive, [autotag]Kendel Dolby[/autotag] picked off Fuller for the third time, resulting in a short field for the offense. They cashed in with another touchdown pass to Stoops to go up 28-0 to end the first quarter.

The Golden Hurricane finally got something going after [autotag]Cardell Williams[/autotag] came in to replace Roman Fuller. He was able to convert several third downs before finding [autotag]Marquis Shoulders[/autotag] in the end zone after [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag] got caught peeking into the backfield.

The Sooners responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel to [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag] on a 3rd and 11.

Williams went back to work, picking apart several soft spots in the Sooners coverage. Tulsa got back into the end zone when Williams found Devan Williams on an out-and-up, beating Reggie Pearson in coverage.

On the following possession, Dillon Gabriel threw his first interception of the year trying to take a deep shot to [autotag]Gavin Freeman[/autotag].

The Sooners ended the half with a great drive that chewed up the clock but couldn’t punch it in, settling for a field goal. After it was a masterful first half for the Sooners, their inability to score a touchdown after getting to the Tulsa 23 yard line with more than a minute to play and all three timeouts left a lot to be desire. Oklahoma settled for a field goal to go into the break 38-14.

The Sooners outgained Tulsa 371-200 in the first half. The Sooners also didn’t punt in the first half. The only blemish on what was a fantastic first half were the two turnovers.

Tulsa started the second half with a great drive but Oklahoma stoned them once they got to the two-yard line forcing a field goal.

The rest of the quarter belonged to the Sooners, who scored 21 points, including two 40+ yard touchdown passes to Nic Anderson. One of those came from Gabriel, his fifth of the day, and the other from [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

[autotag]Key Lawrence[/autotag] came away with the Sooners fourth interception of the day in the third quarter to run away from the Golden Hurricane.

The fourth quarter was much like the third as [autotag]Trace Ford[/autotag] picked off Williams and took it to the four-yard line before [autotag]Gavin Sawchuk[/autotag] capped off the scoring with his first touchdown of the season.

The Sooners outgained Tulsa 596-292. The Sooners continued to find success on third-down success, going 7 of 9. Dillon Gabriel had another impressive performance, completing 28-31 attempts for 421 yards and five touchdowns. The 421 yards passing are the fourth most in Gabriel’s career and this is the fourth time in his career with five or more touchdowns.

Three wide receivers went over 100 yards on the day. Jalil Farooq led the way with six receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown. Farooq also had three kick returns for 105 yards, including the 62-yard return to open the game. Andrel Anthony continued his strong 2023 season, catching four passes for 112 yards, while Anderson tallied three receptions for 120 yards and three touchdowns.

Drake Stoops added a pair of scores and caught eight passes for 53 yards.

The defense was impressive yet again, holding the nation’s 26th-ranked rushing attack to 75 total yards on 1.6 yards per carry. The Sooners also created five interceptions and were credited with three sacks in the contest.

Danny Stutsman led the Sooners with nine total tackles, two tackles for loss, and the interception. Tulsa native and one of this week’s captains, Gentry Williams was second on the team in tackles with six. He also had a tackle for loss and an interception in his homecoming.

The Oklahoma Sooners are 3-0 to start the season and will face their first true test when they travel to Cincinnati to open Big 12 play.  The Sooners take on the Bearcats at 11:00 a.m. CT as part of Fox Big Noon Kickoff.

By the Numbers: No. 16 Oklahoma takes on Golden Hurricane in Tulsa

A by the numbers look at the Oklahoma Sooners matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The Oklahoma Sooners enter their week three matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as one of two teams in the nation with a top 10 scoring offense and a top 10 scoring defense.

The Sooners have a chance to keep that going this weekend when they take on the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa.

Oklahoma had a solid, though uninspired, offensive effort a week ago, and the defense was really good against the SMU Mustangs. Though Tulsa will have some talented players on both sides of the ball, they don’t appear to be as talented as the Mustangs, especially on offense.

But that doesn’t mean the Sooners can take Tulsa lightly. They have a pair of athletic quarterbacks that will make them pay if the Sooners lose containment.

With kickoff just hours away, here’s a by the numbers look at Oklahoma vs. Tulsa.

Three defensive keys for a Sooners victory in Tulsa

Oklahoma is set to travel to Tulsa and continue their dominating ways on Saturday. We took a look at three defensive keys for OU.

Oklahoma’s defense has been the story of the 2023 season thus far. They have been fascinating to watch. While they have yet to play the more talented teams on their schedule, the foundation they are laying on the field through two games is encouraging.

Against an SMU team loaded with skill position talent and a young but talented quarterback, the Sooners gave up just one touchdown.

It wasn’t just the scoring defense, either.

Part of what made the performance so successful was the players’ ability to diagnose things and make plays in the backfield. They played sound football, correctly setting the edge in the run game to minimize gains.

Some of that discipline was lacking on defense last year. The course correction early in 2023 has been fun to watch.

Brent’s boys take their show down the road to Tulsa and will look to keep the tremendous defensive play going.

We highlighted the offensive keys to a Sooners victory earlier this week. This time, we’ll look at the defensive keys for a Sooners win on Saturday.
