Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman continues to play at an All-American level

Fresh off a National and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week performance, Danny Stutsman continued his strong 2023 vs. Tulsa.

With 3:34 left in the first quarter, Tulsa Golden Hurricane quarterback Roman Fuller dropped back to pass on a 3rd and 4. Fuller flung a pass to the right, and in the right spot, at the right time, was Danny Stutsman.

Stutsman, fresh off a National Defensive Player of the Week honor, got his hand on it, picked it off, and took it back for a touchdown. This play is exemplary of the growth this defense has made.

Stutsman broke down that play for reporters after the game.

“I was the QB spy player just kind of reading the eyes, and they had that curl route get open, and I was just there for it.”

Stutsman was someone a year ago who struggled in pass coverage and often looked confused. Toward the end of the season, he really started to put things together. Now, he’s off to an All-American type of start. After having 17 tackles a week ago, he followed that up with nine more, 2.5 tackles for loss, and the interception return for a touchdown.

The defense as a whole had another strong performance picking off Tulsa’s two quarterbacks five times. This comes after dropping so many a year ago.

Stutsman said it’s something they worked on this offseason. “We were on the jug machine putting that work in and getting our hands right,” Stutsman said.

That work is paying off as the Sooners now have six interceptions on the season. But there is still work to be done as there could have been more interceptions in Saturday’s game that were dropped.

So, I’m sure those players will be on the jugs machine quite a bit this week.

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners big win over Tulsa

The Oklahoma Sooners put on an incredible performance in their 66-17 win over Tulsa and here’s how social media reacted.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane was a fantastic way to end the nonconference portion of the schedule. The Sooners won, 66-17, and did so in dominating fashion.

Though Tulsa mounted impressive drives in the second quarter, the Sooners’ defense was in control for much of the rest of the game.

It was another comfortable win for Oklahoma before its opens Big 12 play next week. It received big-time performances from a number of players, starting with quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who had one of the best games of his career.

The big margin allowed for the Sooners to continue to build their competitive depth, and that was on display on Saturday afternoon in a dominant performance.

Here’s how social media reacted to the win.

Justin Harrington unavailable at cheetah for the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Tulsa

Though he made the trip with the team, starting cheetah linebacker Justin Harrington not expected to play against Tulsa.

The Oklahoma Sooners are out to build a defense that more resembles what Brent Venables put together at Clemson and Oklahoma. With a pair of strong performances against Arkansas State and SMU already under their belt, the Sooners hope to keep that momentum going against Tulsa before Big 12 play begins next Saturday against Cincinnati.

But as they prepared to play the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa, they’ll have to do so without starting cheetah backer [autotag]Justin Harrington[/autotag].

According to Eddie Radesovich of SoonerScoop.com and On3, the senior defender made the trip to Tulsa but isn’t suited out for today’s game.

Harrington, who is fifth on the team in snaps this season, is out of action with a sprained knee suffered in the win over SMU.

This season, Harrington’s played 91 snaps at cheetah and has generated six total tackles, an interception, and four pressures on the season.

The Sooners will likely turn to Indiana transfer[autotag] Dasan McCullough[/autotag], who will be making his first appearance since being injured in the win over Arkansas State. Oklahoma will also likely utilize [autotag]Reggie Pearson[/autotag] as well as blue-chip true freshmen [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Samuel Omosigho[/autotag].

The Sooners need someone to step up and fortify that spot in Harrington’s absence, which could extend into Big 12 play.

After an offseason where the coaching staff highlighted the competitive depth, the Sooners should have a good answer to the cheetah question.

By the Numbers: No. 16 Oklahoma takes on Golden Hurricane in Tulsa

A by the numbers look at the Oklahoma Sooners matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The Oklahoma Sooners enter their week three matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as one of two teams in the nation with a top 10 scoring offense and a top 10 scoring defense.

The Sooners have a chance to keep that going this weekend when they take on the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa.

Oklahoma had a solid, though uninspired, offensive effort a week ago, and the defense was really good against the SMU Mustangs. Though Tulsa will have some talented players on both sides of the ball, they don’t appear to be as talented as the Mustangs, especially on offense.

But that doesn’t mean the Sooners can take Tulsa lightly. They have a pair of athletic quarterbacks that will make them pay if the Sooners lose containment.

With kickoff just hours away, here’s a by the numbers look at Oklahoma vs. Tulsa.

Sooners safety Robert Spears-Jennings now healthy and ready to make an impact

Robert Spears-Jennings was one of many Sooners who battled injuries this offseason but now he’s healthy and ready to go.

The Oklahoma Sooners safety room is one of the deeper rooms on the entire team. It is full of experience with [autotag]Reggie Pearson[/autotag], [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag] and [autotag]Key Lawerence[/autotag].

It also has some very skilled younger players like [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Robert Spears-Jennings[/autotag]. Spears-Jennings battled an injury this off-season but now is back and ready to make an impact on the field.

He told reporters it wasn’t too tough watching Week 1 waiting for his chance to play.

“I told my guys right before the game I’m going to be their biggest fan that game,” Spears-Jennings said. “Every time they made a play, I was the loudest one on the sideline and cheering those guys on.”

But now Spears-Jennings is back as he made his season debut against the SMU Mustangs. He finished with three tackles on the night.

Each one of the safeties brings a different element to the Sooners’ defense which is good to have. Spears-Jennings is someone who can make plays on the ball, but he’s arguably the hardest hitter of the group.

He’s someone who has no issue with laying the wood on someone and helping stop the run game as well.

Safeties coach Brandon Hall has a really good group and so far it has been the best group on the field for the Sooners defense in 2023.

Oklahoma Sooners offensive line looks to get back on track in Week 3 vs. Tulsa

The Oklahoma Sooners offensive line looks to get back on track after underperforming Week 2.

The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a bizarre offensive performance against the SMU Mustangs. Many thought the Sooners would dominate but that just wasn’t the case.

The most bizarre thing was how the offensive line seemed to get barely any push and rarely created holes. This is an offensive line that has been touted as one of the better ones Oklahoma has had in the last few years, which is saying something.

Offensive tackle Walter Rouse spoke with reporters after practice on Tuesday and said they have to be better going forward.

“Obviously, it’s always good to get a win. But when I say this, I mean the utmost respect for SMU with the type of program that I believe we can be and the type of program all of the coaches know we can be is that I think we could have done a lot better,” Rouse said. “I feel like we should have put that game away a lot earlier.”

Rouse went on to say he felt the effort and want to was there, but the technique needs improvement. The Sooners will take on a Tulsa team that generated a lot of pressure in their first game but didn’t last week against the Washington Huskies.

That is to be expected as Washington’s quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was only hit 16 times a season ago. The Sooners are going to need to duplicate that performance this week.

“Tulsa is going to come out and give us everything they have,” Rouse said. “(They will) show us things we’ve never seen before. We have to respect them, respect their defensive line and come out with good technique.”

The Sooners offensive line will get that opportunity for redemption this Saturday on their first road trip of the season. There’s little doubt the offensive line will play well. Because if there’s one position group that deserves the benefit of the doubt, it’s the offensive line led by [autotag]Bill Bedenbaugh[/autotag].

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Tulsa Golden Hurricane Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense improved a bit over a rough 2018, but it still wasn’t always enough – the defense let the team down far too often. Still, the Golden Hurricane averaged 420 yards per game with a decent enough passing game to get by.

Starting quarterback Zach Smith – after transferring over from Baylor – is back after throwing for close to 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns with just nine picks. No. 2 man Seth Boomer also returns – neither one will run much, but either one can handle the passing attack and push for close to 300 yards.

Keenan Johnson is gone after making 46 grabs. All of the other top receivers are expected back, starting with the dangerous Keylon Stokes – who led the team with 62 catches for 1,049 yards and six touchdowns – along with junior Sam Crawford, who caught 59 passes for 777 yards and five scores. This is a deep group – helped by the addition of Oklahoma State TE transfer Grayson Boomer – that should be even more explosive.

The 1-2 rushing punch of Shamari Brooks and Corey Taylor are back. Brooks is the 5-9, 190-pound scooter, and the 215-pound Taylor handles more of the thump. 229-pound sophomore TK Wilkerson also returns after running for six scores.

They’re all working behind a line that’s shuffling things around a bit. Four starters are back, but there are some moving parts for a group that struggle for the running game and allowed a way-too-many 3.25 sacks per game.
