Bucs activate veteran defensive back from practice squad for Week 12

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers activate a veteran defensive back to the squad on Tuesday ahead of their matchup with the Giants in Week 12.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers activate a veteran defensive back to the squad on Tuesday ahead of their matchup with the Giants in Week 12. The Bucs are activating veteran Troy Hill to bring some depth to the secondary.

Hill also brings a splash of playmaking as well.

Hill has appeared in 119 career games for the Cincinnati Bengals , Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers. In the process f hoping between all these teams, he ended up making 60 starts and totaling 406 tackles, 41 passes defensed, nine interceptions.

Three of those nine interceptions were returned for touchdowns which speaks to the magic he can make magic happen, which the Bucs need a dose of.

Hill’s best season came in 2020 when he posted career highs in tackles (77), passes defensed (10) and interceptions (three), while leading the NFL in defensive touchdowns, with three.

He will be playing alongside Antoine Winfield Jr., and the recently signed Mike Edwards in the safety position.

Former Panthers CB signs onto NFC South rival’s active roster

Former Panthers CB Troy Hill has earned himself a spot on the Buccaneers’ active roster.

It didn’t take cornerback Troy Hill long to find a new home after he was released by the Carolina Panthers last month. Heck, he didn’t even have to go to another division.

And now, he’s getting a bit comfier in his new digs.

As announced on Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have promoted Hill to their active roster. The move comes 19 days after the NFC South rivals signed the 10th-year veteran to their practice squad.

The Panthers parted ways with Hill prior to their Week 7 matchup against the Washington Commanders. That decision closed the book on a two-year run for Hill in Carolina—where he recorded 80 combined tackles, an interception, seven passes defensed and a forced fumble over 22 games.

Hill, to that point, had been the Panthers’ primary nickel corner. Those duties were then reassigned to 2024 fifth-round pick Chau Smith-Wade, who struggled in the role.

Veteran Dane Jackson has seemingly taken over the spot recently, as he tallied a team-high 35 snaps from the slot in the Week 10 victory over the New York Giants.

Bucs sign former Bengals DB Troy Hill to practice squad

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a move that could bolster the secondary in the coming weeks.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a move that could bolster the secondary in the coming weeks. The team has signed former Bengals defensive back Troy Hill to their practice squad.

Since 2015, Hill has appeared in 119 career games for the Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers. He has made 60 starts and has 406 tackles, 41 passes defended, nine interceptions, five quarterback hits, three sacks, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles.

Hill’s best season came in 2020 when he posted career highs in tackles (77), passes breakups (10) and interceptions (three), while leading the NFL in defensive touchdowns, with three.

They may have some hope if he can bring that type of playmaking to the Bucs secondary. The secondary is going to make or break this season, more than the issues presently facing the wide receiver room. Todd Bowles could do well to bring him up to the active roster sooner rather than later.

Panthers announce 6 moves on Saturday

The Panthers, among a handful of moves made on Saturday, officially announced the release of CB Troy Hill.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of adjustments a day ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Washington Commanders.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport yesterday afternoon, the team has released cornerback Troy Hill. The 10th-year veteran has spent the last two seasons as a member of the Panthers.

After splitting his previous eight campaigns between the Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns, Hill initially signed with Carolina in August of 2023. He’d go on to appear in 16 games that year—totaling 48 combined tackles, an interception (and subsequent return for a touchdown), a forced fumble and six passes defensed.

Hill re-signed with the Panthers on a one-year deal this past spring. The 33-year-old played in all six games this season.

Along with Hill’s departure, Carolina also waived rookie center Andrew Raym.

Those two spots on the active roster will be filled by defensive lineman T.J. Smith and cornerback Dane Jackson, who has yet to make his team debut after signing a two-year, $8.5 million contract this offseason. Jackson, while continuing to recover from a hamstring injury, was designated to return to practice on Oct. 2.

They’ll be joined by outside linebacker Shaq Lawson and inside linebacker Shaquille Quarterman, who have been elevated from the practice squad for tomorrow’s contest.

Report: Panthers releasing veteran CB ahead of Week 7 game vs. Commanders

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are releasing CB Troy Hill.

The Carolina Panthers defense is continuing to go through changes.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team plans to release cornerback Troy Hill. The report comes just two days before kickoff of the Panthers’ Week 7 matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Hill is currently in his 10th NFL campaign. He’s spent two of those in Carolina—where he’s amassed 80 combined tackles, an interception, six passes defensed and a forced fumble over 22 games.

The 33-year-old has been the defense’s primary nickel defender during the 2024 season. Hill has recorded 202 snaps from the slot position over six outings.

His impending departure could allow more playing time for rookie Chau Smith-Wade, the only other Panthers cornerback to line up at nickel this year. Smith-Wade was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 draft.

Moton, meanwhile, remains “day-to-day.” The eighth-year hog molly missed the very first game of his NFL career this past Sunday due to a triceps injury.

Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who missed Week 6’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, also did not participate. (Clowney’s initial listing as a “limited’ participant was officially changed by the team following the release of today’s injury report.)

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson misses Wednesday’s practice with new injury

LG Damien Lewis and NT Shy Tuttle returned to practice for the Panthers. But WR Diontae Johnson was out with an ankle injury.

The Carolina Panthers welcomed a handful of players back to the practice field to kick off Week 5.

Among those in session on Wednesday included starting left guard Damien Lewis and starting nose tackle Shy Tuttle, both of whom sat out from this past Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Lewis missed his first game of the season with his UCL tear while Tuttle missed his second due to a foot issue.

Joining the two were tight end Ian Thomas and cornerback Dane Jackson. Thomas and Jackson were officially designated to return to practice from injured reserve this morning and will have 21 days to be activated to the main roster.

There was, however, some discouraging news—as wide receiver Diontae Johnson was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Johnson, the team’s leading pass catcher, was dealing with a groin strain last week.
