Denver trades up in 4th round of NFL draft

Denver traded three picks to the Seattle Seahawks to get an earlier selection in the fourth round of the NFL draft, as well as a 7th round pick

After standing pat on their Day 1 and Day 2 picks in the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos traded up from the 121st overall pick to the 102nd pick, from the Seattle Seahawks.

The Broncos selected wide receiver Troy Franklin with that pick, but it came at the cost of a few selections. In exchange for the 102nd, Denver traded Seattle the 121st-overall (4th round), 136th-overall (5th round) and 207th-overall (6th round) picks, and Seattle gave Denver the 102nd and 235th overall selections.

Denver wanted to give quarterback Bo Nix his top target at the University of Oregon, and had the chance to add Franklin

Wide receiver Troy Franklin was teammates with rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

The Denver Broncos have selected wide receiver Troy Franklin with the 102nd pick of the 2024 NFL draft.

Denver traded up to the 102nd pick by way of the Seattle Seahawks, and Seattle received the 121st overall pick.

Franklin (6-2, 170 pounds) will have the advantage of knowing the new Denver quarterback, as Franklin and fellow first-round draftee Bo Nix were teammates at the University of Oregon. According to Mike Klis, when Nix held a private workout with the Broncos, Franklin ran routes for Nix.

In three years as a Duck, Franklin played in 30 games, snatching 160 passes for 2,483 yards and 25 touchdowns.

In 2023, Franklin was named a 2023 2nd Team All-American. His 1.383 rec yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023 were both school records, when Nix was under center.

Sports Illustrated recently noted that Franklin may be able to become a deep threat and a contested catch beast at the pro level. Draft Wire also had Franklin as the 60thbest player in their top 200 players, two spots behind Denver’s third round selection, Jonah Elliss.

Franklin joins wide receivers Marvin Mims, Courtland Sutton and Lil’Jordan Humphrey in a relatively young receiver room in Denver, where he may become a primary target for whoever becomes the 2024 Broncos starting quarterback.

Oregon WR Troy Franklin selected by Denver Broncos with pick No. 102 in the NFL draft

Troy Franklin lands with the Broncos at No. 102 in the 2024 NFL draft.

Troy Franklin, a former wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks, was selected by the Denver Broncos with the No. 102 pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Franklin played three seasons at Oregon, and in his final two seasons, he was as good as any wideout in the country.

Franklin came to the Ducks as a four-star recruit and the No. 3 WR in the class of 2021. Franklin came to Eugene from Palo Alto, California, where he attended Menlo Atherton High School, an alma mater he shares with current Oregon WR Jurrion Dickey.

In his career at Oregon, Franklin played in 40 games, racking up 160 catches, 2,483 yards and 25 touchdowns. The Troy Franklin moments that immediately come to my mind are the times he blew the top off the defense. His go-ahead TD against UCLA in 2022 and his miraculous catch-and-run TD against Oregon State in 2023 are two of my favorites.

With the Broncos, Franklin will be in a great situation, catching passes from former Oregon QB Bo Nix and playing alongside established receivers Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims.

Franklin had his breakout season in 2022 when he forged an immediate connection with new Oregon quarterback Bo Nix. That season, as he became Nix’s favorite target, Franklin had 61 catches, 891 yards and 9 TDs, more than quadrupling the numbers from his freshman year. Nix and Franklin found room to grow in 2023, connecting for 81 completions, 1,383 yards and 14 TDs in both players’ final season at Oregon.

On the first two nights of the 2024 NFL Draft, the teams selected the first 100 prospects over the three rounds. Now it’s time for the remaining four rounds, kicking off on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET in downtown Detroit.

Baltimore can draft for the best available player after landing Nate Wiggins, Adisa Isaac, and Roger Rosengarten

Here are the top 30 players the Ravens could target on Day 3 of the 2024 NFL draft.

Troy Franklin, Brandon Dorlus named among best available in last day of NFL draft

It’s a bit of surprise that WR Troy Franklin, DL Brandon Dorlus and other Ducks are still available in the draft.

Mock drafts are fun to poke around on and get a sense of what the real thing might be like, but they are just mock drafts, predictions, and no guarantees of how the 2024 NFL draft might actually go.

Several Ducks who were highly thought of in the mock drafts, such as Troy Franklin and Brandon Dorlus, are still available as the third day of the draft approaches.

According to the analytical site PFF.com, Franklin and Dorlus are near the top of the list of the best available players and should be taken quickly when the selection process begins once again Saturday. PFF says Franklin is a steal at this point of the draft.

Franklin might get lost in the shuffle of a loaded wide receiver class, but he shouldn’t. His smoothness comes from his athletic profile and his confidence in knowing how to win at the position. He needs to continue to get stronger, but he is a competitive player who can be a good WR2 for a vertical NFL offense.

Dorlus, a defensive tackle, comes in at No. 5 on the list. This was PFF’s assessment.

“Though a bit of a tweener, Dorlus has 3-4 and 4-3 versatility with a strong power profile to be a rotational player and potential spot starter,” says PFF.

Also on the list of the top 100 best available are Bucky Irving at No. 10, corner Khyree Jackson at No. 14.

Jackson Powers-Johnson leads list of Ducks among best available players in 2024 NFL Draft

Jackson Powers-Johnson and Troy Franklin are among the best players available in round 2 of the NFL Draft, per PFF.

It was Bo Nix’s time to shine in the first round and the first night of the NFL draft as the Denver Broncos selected the Oregon quarterback No. 12 overall.

Of course, Nix isn’t the only Duck that will be a part of the selection process. According to Pro Football Focus, Jackson Powers-Johnson leads the list of best Ducks still available as the draft goes on for Friday and Saturday.

Overall, JPJ comes in at No. 5 in the best available. This is what they had to say about the Oregon center.

“Powers-Johnson possesses starting-caliber power and finesse traits at center or guard for both zone or man/gap-blocking concepts,” PFF said.”He is dominant enough at his position to be considered a top-20 talent.”

Next on their list of 100 is Oregon receiver Troy Franklin, who would be a great addition for any team. Franklin is listed as the No. 6 best available player, per PFF.

Also on the list is defensive tackle Brandon Dorlus at No. 35, running back Bucky Irving at No. 48 and defensive back Khyree Jackson at No. 56.

We will see where everyone ends up getting drafted, and whether they hear their names called on Friday or Saturday, but it should be an entertaining couple of days for Duck fans.

Pair of Ducks projected to be selected in Round 2 of 2024 NFL Draft

ESPN’s latest round 2 mock draft has both Jackson Powers-Johnson and Troy Franklin landing with NFL teams on Friday night.

The Oregon Ducks kept the important streak of first-round picks in the NFL Draft alive on Thursday night with quarterback Bo Nix being selected by the Denver Broncos with the No. 12 overall pick. Now, as we get into Day 2 of the draft, more Ducks should hear their names called.

Both Jackson Powers-Johnson and Troy Franklin have been listed among the best available players left on the board, and according to a round two mock draft from ESPN that was released on Friday, the pair will receive that coveted call in a matter of hours.

According to ESPN, Powers-Johnson projects to land with the New Orleans Saints at pick No. 45.

After adding offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga in the first round, the Saints continue to address the offensive line by adding Powers-Johnson. He can also play guard and would give them another physical tone-setter.

Not too long after that, Franklin is expected to hear his name called, landing with a team that many thought might take him in the first round — the Buffalo Bills, at pick No. 60.

Trading leading receiver Stefon Diggs to the Texans and Gabe Davis signing with the Jaguars makes wideout a pressing need for the Bills. Franklin would give quarterback Josh Allen a target who can stretch the field.

There’s a chance that we see guys like Brandon Dorlus, Bucky Irving, and Khyree Jackson get drafted on Friday night in the second or third round as well, but it feels like almost a certainty that both JPJ and Franklin find out their NFL teams at some point today.

Player comparisons for the top-rated Oregon Ducks in 2024 NFL Draft

Troy Franklin as Terry McLaurin? Who is Bo Nix?

We’re just a few days out from the 2024 NFL draft, and it’s shaping up to be a historic year for the Oregon Ducks. Oregon has several draft-eligible players, and for the first time since 2015, we may see multiple Ducks selected in the first round.

Last week, Touchdown Wire published the list of their top 50 prospects in this year’s draft, and the list featured several Ducks. The list also provided a pro-player comparison for each prospect on the list.

The highest-ranked Oregon player on the list is Jackson-Powers-Johnson at No. 24. His comparison? Alex Mack, a center who played 13 seasons in the NFL, made seven pro bowls, and was a second-team All-Pro three times. In 2017, Mack made it to the Super Bowl with the Atlanta Falcons where they were defeated by the New England Patriots.

Immediately after Powers-Johnson at No. 25, is wide receiver Troy Franklin, who Touchdown Wire compared to Washington Commanders wideout Terry McLaurin. McLaurin has played just five seasons in the pros, but he immediately became an impact player for Washington after he was drafted. In every year but his rookie year, McLaurin has eclipsed 1000 yards receiving (as a rookie he had 919), using his speed and ball skills to threaten opposing defense with long balls and with routes over the middle.

Two spots down from Franklin at No. 27 is quarterback Bo Nix, whose comp is Dak Prescott. Like Nix, Prescott wasn’t beloved as a prospect, but he’s made a solid career for himself in eight seasons in Dallas. One similarity Touchdown Wire highlighted between the two QBs is their ability to make on-the-fly adjustments pre-snap. We saw Nix demonstrate this ability time and time again this season, exploiting opposing defenses’ weak spots up and down the field.

These three prospects will all be interesting to watch at the draft this week since they all have the potential to be mid-first-round picks, but they could all also fall into the second round. Hopefully, wherever they end up, they are able to make a sizable impact on their new team.

Oregon Ducks looking to continue streak of 1st-round NFL Draft picks for fifth year

Can the Ducks keep their first-round streak in the NFL draft going?

When it comes to helping players make the jump from college to the NFL, few teams have been better than the Oregon Ducks, particularly with first-round talent.

The Ducks are currently on a four-year streak of having a player drafted in the first round, which started with quarterback Justin Herbert in 2020, selected by the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 6 overall. In 2021, the Detroit Lions took LT Penei Sewell with the No. 7 overall pick, the New York Giants took EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux with the No. 5 overall pick in 2022, and the New England Patriots drafted CB Christian Gonzalez at No. 17 in 2023.

Earlier this offseason, it seemed like a lock that the Ducks would be able to extend that first-round streak, potentially seeing QB Bo Nix, OL Jackson Powers-Johnson, and WR  Troy Franklin go in the first 32 picks. However, over the past few weeks, those three have seen their names slide down mock draft projections a bit. While it’s still common to see various mock drafts project them in the first round, it is at least a question of whether or not Oregon will keep the streak going.

This past week, Circa Sportsbook released their opening lines for NFL Draft positions, which gives an over/under for prominent players.

Bo Nix has his over/under set at 32.5; Jackson Powers-Johnson’s over/under is set at 30.5; Troy Franklin’s over/under is set all the way down at 41.5.

Based on those numbers, it seems like Powers-Johnson has the best chance to be a first-round pick, but he very well could fall into the second round. Of course, some mock drafts have Bo Nix going as high as No. 12 overall to the Denver Broncos, while I’ve seen others that project Franklin to the Buffaloes at No. 28.

We ultimately will see in a couple of weeks where each of these players ends up, but for now, the streak is certainly something to keep an eye on.

Traeshon Holden relishing opportunity to step up as Oregon Ducks’ WR1

Oregon needs a new WR1 after Troy Franklin’s departure. Traeshon Holden is throwing his hat in the ring.

A year ago, the Oregon Ducks saw one of the best years in school history when it came to production from the wide receiver position. Numerous records fell throughout the year, and it now leaves the two most responsible parties — Bo Nix and Troy Franklin — with positive outlooks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

With those departures comes a production void, where Dan Lanning and the Ducks now have to find which players are going to step up and provide the success that has become the standard in Eugene.

Traeshon Holden would like to throw his name in the ring as a top candidate.

[lawrence-related id=59770]

“With Troy being gone, it’s just the next person. I feel like I’m the next person,” Holden said on Saturday after practice. “So I just got to show everybody what I can do.”

During his first season at Oregon after transferring from Alabama, Holden was a solid option in the passing game, hauling in 37 catches for 452 yards and six touchdowns. Holden really came on late in the season, combining for six catches, 132 yards and two touchdowns in the Pac-12 title game and the Fiesta Bowl.

Going into his second year with the Ducks, Holden feels much more comfortable and confident in the system, and it’s allowed him to take a step forward in his development on the field.

“It’s just route details,” wide receiver coach Junior Adams said of Holden. “He’s worked on that a lot this offseason, even over spring break. He’s worked on it. He’s playing good ball. He’s catching a lot of balls with his hands now and not body-catching it. He’s coming out with a good attitude every day.”

[lawrence-related id=59780]

After watching Franklin have a career year in Oregon’s offense, and now be projected as a first or second-round pick in the NFL draft, there is an added sense of motivation for pass-catchers on Oregon’s roster. Holden said on Saturday that he obviously aspires to be in a similar spot that Franklin is in a year from now, but in the meantime, he’s just focusing on controlling what he can and improving each day.

“My personal goal is just to continue to be the best I can be and obviously show the whole world what I know I can do,” Holden said. “Each week, each day, just coming out going to work like this. My goal is just to show the world who I am.”
