Vikings OC Wes Phillips offers update on Trishton Jackson’s injury

Vikings wide receiver Trishton Jackson was carted off during Tuesday’s practice with an apparent leg injury.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Trishton Jackson left Tuesday’s training camp session on a cart following an apparent leg injury.

While the presence of a cart doesn’t automatically signal a serious injury, it’s never a good sign for the player.

However, it seems like Jackson may have avoided the worst-case scenario.

On Wednesday, Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips offered an update on Jackson’s injury, mentioning that Jackson avoided any ligament damage to his knee.

The full extent of Jackson’s injury has not been released, but avoiding ligament injury is generally a positive prognosis, especially for a player fighting for a spot on the Vikings’ 53-man roster for the regular season.

Jackson, 25, signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2020. The following year, Jackson signed with the Vikings, where he spent two seasons on the practice squad. He has yet to appear in a regular season game for either team.

In his senior season with Syracuse, Jackson totaled 1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns on 66 catches.

Vikings 90-man roster player profile: WR Trishton Jackson

Trishton Jackson followed Kevin O’Connell to Minnesota and was rewarded with a practice squad spot. Can he make the active roster in 2023?

Welcome to the beginning of our 2023 season preview content!

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at each player on the roster in-depth with backgrounds and how they currently project forward on the Minnesota Vikings roster.

What is the best-case scenario? What is the worst-case scenario? What should we expect from them during the preseason and beyond? We will break all of that down here.

As a staff, all of us at Vikings Wire ranked the entire 90-man roster 1-90 and will be releasing player profiles in reverse order.

Vikings sign 6 players to futures contracts

Futures contracts keep the player in the building to compete for a spot on the roster next year

When the season is over, teams take some time to sign their practice squad players to what is called a futures contract. That is essentially keeping them under contract for the offseason so they can help them develop and go through the offseason program and training camp.

Most players from a team’s practice squad will end up signing one of these at the end of the season, but some choose to wait it out and see what other opportunities exist elsewhere.

On Monday, the Minnesota Vikings inked six players to futures contracts with five of them coming from the practice squad and the other coming from injured reserve.

WR Olabisi Johnson is out for the season with a knee injury

Absolutely brutal luck for the fourth-year wide receiver

For a second-straight season, Vikings wide receiver Olabisi Johnson is out for the year with a torn ACL.

This is a rough break for the fourth-year receiver whom the Vikings drafted in the seventh round in 2019 out of Colorado State. After two quality seasons, Johnson was poised to have a breakout season in a similar way to how K.J. Osborn did in 2021.

Johnson tore his ACL for the first time in the second week of training camp, ending his season. This is a really tough break for Johnson, as he had earned a roster spot.

Where do the Vikings go from here? After the injury last night, I added Trishton Jackson to the final 53-man roster projection and Johnson will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

We wish Johnson a speedy recovery and that he comes back better than ever.

While the team prepares for the season, we are doing the same at the Vikings Wire. We will be producing previews breaking down both each position and the team as a whole.

Today, we continue with our preview series by talking about the wide receivers.

4 Things to Watch Heading Into Week 2 vs San Francisco

The most important game of the preseason is on Saturday

The second week of the preseason is arguably the most important.

Much like week three used to be before the 17th game was added last year, week two is treated like a dress rehearsal. This game has some game planning involved and gives players and teams a true game week experience.

Usually, the starters will play a significant amount of time. Per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, that might not be the case for the Vikings having spent two days facing the 49ers in joint practices.

If they don’t play much on Saturday, it will be great for the young players to get some extra reps in. With the game not meaning anything from a record standpoint, the score is less important than the performance of players and units.

Here are four things that you need to be watching out for during Saturday’s game.

Former Rams WR Trishton Jackson signs to Vikings practice squad

After spending last season with the Rams, Trishton Jackson will try to carve out a role with the Vikings.

As deep as the Los Angeles Rams’ receiver room was last season, it got even better this year with the additions of DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell. That left Trishton Jackson on the outside looking in.

After making the team as a rookie in 2020, he was waived by the Rams this week as part of final roster cuts. He’ll take on a new venture in Minnesota, though, signing to the Vikings’ practice squad on Thursday.

He teased the move on Twitter and after it was initially unclear if he’d be joining the 53-man roster or the practice squad, the NFL transaction wire shows it was the latter.

When Jackson was cut by the Rams on Tuesday, he shared a message for the Rams on Twitter, thanking them for the opportunity to get his career started “with one of the best organizations in sports.”

Jackson has what it takes to play on Sundays, he just needs to keep developing his skill set, which he’ll be able to do in Minnesota.

Rams WR Trishton Jackson looks explosive in offseason workout video

Could Trishton Jackson carve out a role in 2021 after not playing as a rookie last season?

As a rookie in 2020, Trishton Jackson didn’t get on the field for the Rams. They were already deep at wide receiver with four players proving to be starting-caliber guys ahead of Jackson.

But being an undrafted rookie, it was a feat in its own right that he remained on the 53-man roster for the entire year. The Rams signed him after the draft out of Syracuse and while he was a healthy scratch every week, they weren’t comfortable cutting him in an attempt to put him on the practice squad.

Jackson still has plenty to do before he contributes in a meaningful way for the Rams, but he has potential after being a standout at Syracuse. Take a look at this video of Jackson working out recently, showing off his change-of-direction skills, explosiveness and route running.

Josh Reynolds is unlikely to return as a pending free agent, which could bump Jackson up the depth chart if he has a good showing in training camp. He probably won’t jump Van Jefferson for the No. 3 spot, but in 2020, Jefferson still earned reps as the No. 4 receiver.

At 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, Jackson isn’t the biggest wideout, but he does have the size required to play wide receiver in the NFL. It’s just a matter of putting it all together and proving himself with big plays in practice and games.
