Titans injury report: T’Vondre Sweat out, Tyler Boyd limited

The Tennessee Titans returned to the practice field on Wednesday and saw defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat leads a group sidelined by injury.

The Tennessee Titans returned to the practice field on Wednesday as they started some preparations for their Week 14 battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before the session began, some news on existing injuries broke.

On a positive note, offensive tackle Jaelyn Duncan, who has been out with a hamstring injury, has been designated to return from injured reserve. This move opens his three week practice window and he was on the field today in a limited capacity.

The news wasn’t as positive on wide receiver Treylon Burks. The former first-round selection has been on injured reserve with a knee injury. When originally injured in practice there was optimism that he would return in 2024. Today, those thoughts came to an end when it was announced that Burks will miss the rest of 2024 with an ACL injury. This is the latest in a long line of injuries for Burks, who has not lived up to his draft pedigree.

As for active Titans, six starters were sidelined on Wednesday. Cornerback Roger McCreary, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, linebacker Kenneth Murray, guard Peter Skoronski, defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat and linebacker James Williams were all held out.

Wide receiver Tyler Boyd, offensive tackle Leroy Watson, and Duncan were limited. While cornerback Chidobe Awuzie was a full participant and is working toward being activated for the Jaguars game.

The Titans complete injury report for Wednesday can be found below.

Did not participate: CB Roger McCreary (shoulder), DT Jeffery Simmon (NIR/rest), LB Kenneth Murray (hamstring), OG Peter Skoronski (foot), DT T’Vondre Sweat (shoulder), LB James Williams (knee)

Titans’ elevate QB Trevor Siemian, CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally for Week 7

Treylon Burks to IR for the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans make a couple roster moves along with dipping into their practice squad Saturday afternoon in preparation for their match-up with the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.

The Titans officially placed WR Treylon Burks on injured reserve with his knee injury. This is the latest setback for the former first-round wide receiver and builds upon the frustrations that have plagued his career. He will miss at least the next four games, although it could be much longer depending on the severity.

In his place, the Titans signed DT Abdullah Anderson to the active roster from the practice squad  Anderson does have some experience. In his career, he has eight starts in 33 appearances, accumulating 54 tackles and 2.5 sacks with the Bears, Commanders, Falcons, Packers and Vikings.

The Titans followed that transaction by elevating QB Trevor Siemian and CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally for the game with the Bills. These moves bring  the potential availability of QB Will Levis and CB L’Jarius Sneed for Week 7 into question. Both players are listed as questionable on the final injury report.

The elevation of Jeudy-Lally is not much of a surprise with Sneed missing practice all week with his quad injury. His elevation would insulate the Titans if he can’t go. The Siemian elevation may signal that Levis is still feeling the aftereffects of his shoulder injury.  Levis practiced all week, but seemed to have a setback on Friday being limited after practicing in full on Thursday.

This is the first elevation of 2024 for both Siemian and Jeudy-Lally.

More bad news for Titans WR Treylon Burks

Tennessee Titans WR Treylon Burks injured his knee in practice and may be taking a trip toward the injured reserve list.

For the most part, the Tennessee Titans have remained rather healthy throughout 2024. While there have been bumps and bruises that have kept people out, up until this week, the biggest loss was CB Chidobe Awuzie who ended up on injured reserve following the Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

This week has been different. With Keondre Coburn recovering from a Week 4 knee injury and RB Tyjae Spears week-to-week with a hamstring injury, the team saw WR Treylon Burks injure a knee in practice and the prognosis is bleak.

Burks, a disappointing former first-round selection, has battled injuries throughout his career. Now, it appears that this injury could put him out for some time. Reports have surfaced that Burks may be headed to injured reserve, costing him at least four weeks of action.

With the Titans taking a run-first approach in recent weeks, Burks’ main contribution came as a blocker. For the season, he has only four receptions for 34 yards, even though he is outpacing other receivers in snaps. With Burks out, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who scored his first touchdown of the season in this past Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Colts, should step in and take on a larger role.

Burks, Spears, and Coburn have all been ruled out by head coach Brian Callahan for Week 7. The rest of the injury report will be released late Friday afternoon after the Titans finish up practice before traveling to Orchard Park to take on the Buffalo Bills.

Coming off another disappointing loss, the Titans have accumulated some injuries this week. DT Keondre Coburn, RB Tyjae Spears, and WR Treylon Burks will be out. LB Cedric Gray was not activated to the active roster and is also out after a full week of practice.

Titans’ Treylon Burks, a valuable trade candidate?

Tennessee Titans WR Treylon Burks could become a valuable trade chip moving toward the 2024 trade deadline.

With the Tennessee Titans on their bye and their season at a crossroads, it is time to take stock of their roster and consider where they could make some changes heading into their stretch run.

Looking at their schedule, the Titans have a tough road ahead. Not only do they have their entire divisional slate on tap, but they also have some games against teams such as the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and Cincinnati Bengals, making some Sundays more difficult to gain traction and maintain momentum.

With this season being the first of the Brian Callahan era and the young quarterback they are trying to develop, it is likely the Titans will look toward more of a rebuilding year and will be playing for the future. Many outside the organization believe the same and have already mentioned veteran WR DeAndre Hopkins as a trade chip. However, another wide receiver should be mentioned more prominently: Treylon Burks.

While Burks has been a disappointment since being drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, he is still young and under team control past the 2024 season. By comparison, Hopkins is a free agent at the end of the season, which could impact any potential compensation.

With size, speed, and pedigree, his 51 receptions for 676 yards and one touchdown on 90 targets could entice a franchise to approach the Titans with an offer. The Titans should jump at the opportunity if one comes to pass. Burks is well Behind Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Tyler Boyd in production and has been looking up at them since their arrival.

Tennessee has some depth at wide receiver and will likely look forward to free agency or the draft to add to the unit after the season. To recoup anything from Burks would be an improvement over his 2024 production, even as he continues to out-snap Hopkins.

For Burks, this could also be a huge opportunity, as he could potentially use the change of scenery and systems to kick-start what has been an underwhelming career. Will it happen? Only time will tell. But a trade with the Burks might just be in the cards heading into the trade deadline.

Titans’ Brian Callahan explains snap counts for Treylon Burks, DeAndre Hopkins

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan had an interesting explanation for why Treylon Burks out-snapped DeAndre Hopkins.

The Tennessee Titans defeated the Miami Dolphins on Monday night, 31-12.

Looking back at the game, one of the interesting trends from early in the season continued — wide receiver Treylon Burks out-snapped DeAndre Hopkins for the fourth time in as many games. This time, the difference was significant.

On Monday night, Burks took 35 snaps while Hopkins was on the field for only 21 plays. Usually, the snap counts are almost even, but in this contest, Hopkins took a backseat.

Was this because of an injury? The heat? No, that was nowhere near the case.

Head coach Brian Callahan revealed that there was a simple answer and that the answer may need to be dissected during the bye. Burks was on the field to block, not catch passes.

“We rotate those guys. But there are some things Burks does that help us in the running game, with blocking,” Callahan said. “We weren’t throwing the ball, either.”

That explanation would make some sense if the game wasn’t as close as it was. Yes, the Titans ran the ball efficiently, but the game was still close. Plus, this could be a huge flaw in the game plan moving forward, if opponents realize Burks is primarily a blocker, they could start to discount the passing attack.

Callahan did mention that they were going to self-scout over the bye week and they should see this tendency and likely make a change. Unfortunately, for fans, they will have to wait until Week 6 to find out what they discovered.
