In previous seasons, the Jaguars have picked through the waiver wire to snag new talent. This year, the team doesn’t have many holes to fill.

It seems highly unlikely that Jacksonville would consider adding any receivers or running backs, and there are really only a few spots where a newcomer could have much of a chance at earning a place. And even if the Jaguars do like a player, they’re buried in the waiver wire order.

The Bears cut Trevis Gipson, who took to social media to thank the fan base for their support.

The Chicago Bears announced their initial 53-man roster, where defensive end Trevis Gipson was among the surprise cuts.

Shortly after the roster was revealed, Gipson took to Twitter (X) to thank the Bears fanbase in a farewell post.

The Bears’ controversial decision to release Gipson bookends an eventful week revolving around the four-year veteran. During Chicago’s final preseason, a report surfaced that revealed Gipson had requested a trade from the Bears.

Gipson’s production in that game added to the speculation that Gipson was adding to his trade value with a strong preseason, creating the expectation that he would be traded instead of cut.

Gipson pushed back against the report soon after he addressed his release, stating in another post that he “never requested a trade.”

No matter how accurate the report was, the truth of the matter is Gipson is no longer with the Bears, and his departure leaves a major hole in the defensive end position. Chicago’s prospects of getting to the quarterback consistently already looked bleak, and the team deciding to cut Gipson only further cripples the position.

The Bears now have no impact pass-rusher outside of newly signed Yannick Ngakoue and DeMarcus Walker. The team will now predominantly rely on Ngakoue, Walker, Dominique Robinson, Rasheem Green and Terrell Lewis.

The waiver wire could be the short-term answer for the team, as it can be expected the Bears will attempt to claim several players. Chicago has the number one waiver priority, which essentially means they get first pick of any player they want.

While the Bears may remedy the situation, the defensive line is looking like the weakest position on the team.

Bears attempted to trade Trevis Gipson before roster cut deadline

Trevis Gipson said he never requested a trade from the Bears.

The Chicago Bears unveiled their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, which featured some notable cuts, including defensive end Trevis Gipson.

Gipson, a fifth-round pick by Chicago in 2020, had a career-best seven sacks filling in for an injured Khalil Mack during the 2021 season. Following that breakout year, the Bears expected big things from Gipson in 2022.

Unfortunately, he fell short of those expectations as part of the NFL’s worst pass rush, which totaled just 20 sacks. Gipson had 31 total tackles, four tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and three pass breakups.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bears were working on trading Gipson — and there were a few teams interested — but they weren’t able to get a deal done.

Last week, it was reported the Bears granted Gipson permission to seek a trade, an indication he’d requested to be traded after he’d fallen down the depth chart.

After Gipson bid Bears fans farewell on Twitter, he shot down the report that he’d requested a trade.

Gipson will no doubt land with another team, especially given there was some interest in the trade market.

With Gipson gone, the Bears’ defensive end group includes Yannick Ngakoue, DeMarcus Walker, Rasheem Green, Dominique Robinson and Terrell Lewis.

The Bears wrapped the preseason with a loss to the Bills, but there were several standout players for Chicago.

The Chicago Bears’ preseason has finally come to close, and it certainly was an interesting stretch of exhibition games. The team was never able to match the same efficiency they produced in the opening game, and the Bears finished their final game with more questions than answers.

The offense was inconsistent, petering out on their first two drives before finally getting the offense into the red zone. Even then, quarterback Justin Fields took a hard hit and was pulled out of the game, leaving fans frustrated that he couldn’t see the drive through.

On the flip side, the defense got shredded by the elite talents of quarterback Josh Allen and receiver Stefon Diggs, leaving fans wondering whether to blame the defense’s preparedness or chalk it up to the Bills’ offensive greatness.

Despite how last night’s game went, fans are happy to be past the scrimmage-like games and are looking forward to meaningful football being played. Just as quickly as it started, the 2023 NFL preseason has come to a close for the Chicago Bears. They wrapped up their finale against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field but fell 24-21 to finish the preseason 1-2, their first losing record in August since 2019.

Saturday’s game had a bit more juice to it, however, as both teams played their starters on offense and defense to begin the game. Bears quarterback Justin Fields struggled out of the gate while Bills quarterback Josh Allen drove his team downfield on their first drive to put seven points on the board. Backup quarterback Kyle Allen also orchestrated multiple scoring drives on the Bears backup defense.

On offense, Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagenet once again used his legs to find the endzone, and Cairo Santos netted a pair of field goals throughout the day. The Bears clawed their way back to keep things close thanks to a touchdown pass from P.J. Walker later in the game, but never held a lead the entire day.

With the preseason now in the books, it’s about time to turn our focus to the regular season, but there were still things to take away from the final dress rehearsal. Here are our takeaways from Saturday’s preseason loss.

Saints should pounce after Bears grant DE Trevis Gipson’s trade request

The Bears have given veteran DE Trevis Gipson permission to seek a trade, and the Saints would be a great landing-spot:

This could be a great fit: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Chicago Bears have given veteran defensive end Trevis Gipson permission to seek a trade, and the New Orleans Saints would be a great landing-spot. The fourth-year pro has 10 sacks and 5 forced fumbles through his first three years and 40 games in the NFL, and the Saints don’t have a lot to hang their hats on at defensive end. Gipson’s pressure totals in each of the last two years would have ranked top-five in New Orleans.

Cameron Jordan’s production has slowed down in the final years of his career. Carl Granderson is facing high expectations as a part-time player promoted to the starting lineup. Payton Turner is finally healthy and practicing well but he needs to prove he can sustain it in games. Rookie draft pick Isaiah Foskey doesn’t appear to be in line for a big role this fall, which is typical for Saints defensive ends.

Go further down the depth chart and you’ve got guys like Niko Lalos and Kyle Phillips competing for a spot on the practice squad. Veteran backup Tanoh Kpassagnon has been taking practice reps over guards and centers, helping to bolster the defensive tackles depth chart and find ways to get him on the field. The Saints could use a proven commodity like Gipson.

Gipson, 26, was a fifth-round pick out of Tulsa back in the 2020 draft. He meets the athletic thresholds the Saints look for at 6-foot-3 and 263 pounds, with an unofficial 9.36 Relative Athletic Score. Fowler adds that Gipson “could be looking to get back to a 3-4 scheme” and the Saints have run enough three-man fronts in recent years to keep him happy.

New Orleans lacks a reliable starter on top of the depth chart opposite Jordan. Granderson has had a productive summer, but he’s averaged just 24.7 snaps per game in his career. Gipson has averaged 34.2 snaps per game the last two years in Chicago’s starting lineup. And like Granderson, he’ll be a free agent in 2024. If either of them leave for a new team on a nice contract offer the Saints could get a compensatory draft pick back to balance out what they spent to acquire him.

And there are plenty of snaps to go around. Jordan’s snap count should continue to go down a bit as he continues to age (his 49.4 defensive snaps and 27.3 pass rush reps per game were a career-low), creating opportunities for younger players to get into the game. The Saints could split reps between Granderson and Gipson at the right defensive end spot while working Turner in as well, which could be wise given his injury history — slowly ramping up his workload to limit his exposure to injury.

Last year the Saints faced about 38 pass attempts per game. If that’s close to what they expect this season, Granderson and Gipson could both easily plan on seeing 15 to 18 pass-rush snaps each week. Turner would get about 10 reps of his own until he’s proven he can handle more. They could also each occasionally line up on the left side along with Kpassagnon and Foskey, if he’s active, in relief of Jordan.

There’s room for Gipson on the depth chart. The Saints have enough salary cap space to afford him (he’s owed about $2.7 million this year) and it shouldn’t take a hefty package of draft picks to get him out of Chicago. But the coaching staff has expressed a lot of optimism in what Granderson and Turner can do together opposite Jordan, so we’ll have to wait and see whether they ultimately make a move.
