ESPN says this 2021 Ohio State football commit has the most potential

ESPN highlighted a player from each top 25 2021 recruiting class that has the most potential. Who did it pick for the Ohio State football?

You can’t compete perennially for conference titles and national championships at a place like Ohio State without continuing to recruit at a high level. The Buckeyes have of course done that for a long time now, and because of it, they’re among the elite programs year in and year out.

It is no different under Ryan Day. In fact, he may have even ratcheted up the recruiting just a wee-bit from what we say with Urban Meyer. He just polished off the consensus No. 2 ranked recruiting class in the country for 2021, with several of them already on campus as early enrollees.

Several will be key contributors, and there’s little doubt that at least a handful (likely more) will also end up in the NFL when their careers are over on the banks of Olentangy.

But who has the best chance with the most potential? Those opinions vary, but ESPN provided an option (subscription required) for every one of the teams that hauled in a top 25 recruiting class for 2021. Who did Tom VanHaaren did it pick from OSU’s class? Inquiring minds want to know.

Where is Ohio State football ranked in ESPN’s future top offenses?

ESPN is projecting certain aspects of college football teams’ performances. Next up is the offense, and it has Ohio State among the best.

During the offseason, we’re undoubtedly going to get a lot of rankings and lists to pass the spring and summer doldrums before activity heats up toward the start of a new college football season. We roll our stuff out as well, but ESPN has been taking a look ahead at the next few seasons in its future power rankings pieces by taking into account projected talent because of recruiting, current talent and head coaches. It is specifically designed to look at the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Next up is a top 25 ranking of college football offenses (subscription required) over that period put together by Adam Rittenberg. It’s now an offense-driven game; gone are the days of dominating with defense and an adequate offense. Few teams have embraced all the fun of laser light shows and fireworks on the unit responsible for scoring points, and Ohio State is at, or near the top, of that list.

But where did ESPN and Rittenberg rank the Buckeyes? You might be a little surprised — or not. Here’s where OSU falls in future offensive power according to the worldwide leader in sports programming.

Numbers handed out for new Ohio State football freshmen

Numbers have been assigned for early enrollee Ohio State freshmen football players. See what the newcomers will be wearing on the field.

Spring is in the air on the campus of The Ohio State University, which can only mean that spring football is right around the corner for the Buckeyes. The first practice of the new year happened last Friday and now we know what numbers the new guys will wear.

All in all, there are 15 new recruits who have enrolled early for classes on campus so they can begin their Ohio State football careers. And there are some big names in this class.

The No. 1 ranked receiver in the class, Emeka Egbuka will wear No. 12. The Bucks also signed No. 1 rated offensive guard Donovan Jackson, but he was not an early enrollee.

This Ohio State football player is the most intriguing newcomer according to ESPN

ESPN identified the most intriguing newcomer for every one of its very early top 25 teams and highlighted this freshman for Ohio State.

Ohio State lost a lot of players to the NFL and graduation, but that’s life in the world of college football where there can be a ton of turnover year over year. The Buckeye program is one that reloads with blue-chip talent almost like none other, so there’s always another batch of recruits to come in and attempt to fill the void. They don’t always get significant playing time in year one, but every so often, that special freshman player enters the fray at just the right time and with just the right abilities to splash on the scene.

What we wonder heading into 2021 is if there’s a player that fits that bill on Ohio State’s roster for this fall? The Buckeyes got several four and five-star recruits, but is there one guy that stands out among the rest?

ESPN asked that very question (subscription required) for all the teams in its way-too-early top 25 college football teams for 2021. With that in mind, Tom VanHaaren identified the one player he believes is the most intriguing on the banks of the Olentangy in the fall.

Five burning offseason questions for Ohio State football

Like any college football program, Ohio State has some things that it has to address during the offseason. Here are five burning questions.

The college football season hasn’t been over very long, but we’re always looking ahead in places like Ohio State. That’s because one glorious run to the postseason usually leads into the next one when you are a Buckeye fan. With the recruiting classes, development, and coaching, anything short of a championship drive is disappointing — most notably when you consider where the program is as a current state.

With that in mind, there are always things that have to be addressed each offseason, especially in the college game where there is such significant turnover. It’s no different for OSU. With the loss of Justin Fields and other key starters, there are some question marks the coaching staff will have to answer.

Here are five burning questions that head coach Ryan Day and his staff will be dealing with during the offseason as they try to put things together for 2021.

Ohio State football commits and targets in town for ‘Buckeye Bash’

Several Ohio State football recruiting commits and attendees are in town for the ‘Buckeye Bash’ recruiting party as OSU kicks off 2020.

As a side note to the thing on everyone’s mind on the eve of the christening of Ohio State football in 2020, there’s also a little football recruiting get together going on called the “Buckeye Bash.”

A trend of a player-led recruiting get together was set by programs like Oklahoma and LSU earlier this year because of the dead period imposed by the NCAA amid the coronavirus pandemic. Ohio State got into the act and decided to all come together with five-star defensive end Jack Sawyer as the host. The party was to coincide with the Buckeyes’ kickoff to the season this weekend.

And it’s not just a small gathering either. In fact, according to Eleven Warriors, there is a total of 14 players that are either committed or still looking at Ohio State from the 2021 recruiting class (and one from 2023) that has a chance to finish as the top-rated class in the country.

So what players ended up committing to the Scarlet and Gray party of future household names? Here’s your complete rundown.

Buckeye Bash set for incoming Ohio State recruits

Incoming five-star running back TreVeyon Henderson told Eleven Warriors that the date for the ‘Buckeye Bash’ is set.

The latest trend in recruiting is for commits to plan their own get together amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the NCAA has forbidden coaches and players to meet in person, having an on-campus event organized through recruiting personnel can’t happen. So, we’ve seen several teams work something out on their own and get a class and other potential prospects together.

There have been previous reports that Ohio State has been working on putting together a similar set up aptly named the “Buckeye Bash,” and according to incoming five-star running back TreVeyon Henderson who spoke to Eleven Warriors, the event has been set for October 24. That just so happens to be the first Ohio State game of the year against Nebraska (but of course you knew that). The date of the get together was first reported by Bill Kuerlic of Bucknuts.

“We’re mainly just gonna go around campus and things like that, and Jack’s (Sawyer) got some other stuff planned,” Henderson told Eleven Warriors. “It’s gonna be an exciting time because he’s got a lot of stuff planned. He’s basically gonna be our guide and tell us where to go.”

Sawyer, who hails from Pickerington North is obviously well-versed in the central Ohio area and has apparently been working on setting up some things for all that can make it. The plan is to watch the game and just get to know each other a little better.

“We’re definitely gonna try to find somewhere to watch that game because you can’t get in. We’re gonna have to find somewhere that’s live that we can watch the game at.”

Henderson is looking forward to the event, but he’s most looking forward to also getting to know Ohio State’s campus that he’s been unable to visit so far, while also starting to form that brotherhood OSU has been known for.

“Just finally getting to see all the guys in person and getting together and bonding more. Visiting campus, finally getting to see what the campus is like and what the city is like,” Henderson said of what he’s most looking forward to on the visit.

As we get further word on attendees and reaction, we’ll have it for you.

August recruiting update: Oklahoma aiming for top running backs in 2021

Oklahoma is aiming for the top running backs in 2021. Here is where the Sooners’ big board is at for running backs.

Oklahoma is swinging for the fences on 2021 running backs.

The Sooners look like they’re refusing to settle for less than a Top 3 back in the class, going hard after the elite RBs in the class.

With Oklahoma’s history of prolific running backs, nearly any target should give the Sooners a look.

Head coach Lincoln Riley has also proven that multiple backs can share the load, and could make a push for more than one star recruit.

Here are some of the top running back targets for Oklahoma’s 2021 class:

CAMAR WHEATON—FIVE-STAR-NO. 1 RB

Oklahoma’s most obvious target at RB, Camar Wheaton fits Lincoln Riley’s mold perfectly. At 5-foot-11, 190 lbs, Wheaton is the prototypical running back, with a perfect mix of size and athleticism. The top-ranked RB in 2021 has shown significant interest in OU, and joined Caleb William’s Sooner Summit campaign as a late addition.

DONOVAN EDWARDS—FIVE-STAR-NO. 2 RB

The second-ranked RB in the 2021 class, Donovan Edwards is a major target for Oklahoma. While the home run-hitting running back seemed to be leaning heavily towards Michigan, COVID-19 cancellations have already affected several recruits decisions. The Sooners will have to contend with nearly every major school for Edwards talents, but Oklahoma is never counted out of a running back race.

TREVEYON HENDERSON—FOUR-STAR-NO. 3 RB

TreVeyon Henderson will be a major factor wherever he lands. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound product is currently committed to Ohio State, but with the Big Ten cancelling football, the Buckeyes have already suffered recruiting woes in the form of recommitments. Should Henderson decide to look elsewhere, Lincoln Riley and the Sooners would surely get a look. Henderson has legitimate speed, and could become a factor earlier in his career.

ESPN ranks this Ohio State football commit as most impactful for the 2021 class

ESPN named this Ohio State football commit for the 2021 class as its most impactful on the team.

There are prospects in big-time college football recruiting that are impactful for their abilities on the field. There are others that not only can stand out on film but also bring others together and help a recruiting class gel. In fact, if you look back on some of the all-time leaders at Ohio State, some weren’t highly regarded but ended up helping lead the program forward (J.T. Barrett anyone?).

However, when the two marry, it’s a beautiful thing.

That brings us to the 2021 recruiting cycle, one that the Ohio State football program has owned to date. Alabama and the other usual suspects might be closing, but the Buckeyes still have far and away the top ranked recruiting class according to almost every recruiting service.

But it didn’t just happen by accident. None of them do. You have to go out and sell, then land the kids that will move the needle forward for the program. Some commitments do it by sheer ability, others with a combination of other attributes and leadership skills.

ESPN took a look at the most impactful recruits in the country (subscription required) based on each team’s current rating in its team recruiting rankings, and it pegged the player it considers the overall top prospect in the class when discussing Ohio State.

Ohio State five-star RB commit TreVeyon Henderson will not be transferring to another high school

Ohio State 5-star running back commit TreVeyon Henderson will not transfer to another high school despite his senior season being canceled.

With the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on high school sports in this country, many high-profile prep athletes have had tough decisions on their plate. Many are faced with not being able to play their senior seasons because of cancellations, and that has some knocking on doors that would otherwise not be looked at.

For example, five-star DB Tony Grimes has decided to reclassify and enroll in college at the University of North Carolina this fall rather than sitting idly by and missing out on an opportunity to compete. Others have — and will — have to make some similar decisions as things become more clear.

We touched on that being the case for Ohio State five-star running back commit TreVeyon Henderson. His high school season has already been shelved, so there was a chance that he would transfer to another private school like IMG Academy in Florida to continue to develop and get more playing time.

That does not appear to be in the cards however according to a tweet Henderson shared on his own Twitter profile. He will be staying the course, continuing to attend high school in Hopewell, Virginia, then enrolling early at Ohio State.

While it would have been fun to see what Henderson could have done at another school during his senior year, this makes sense for him. He is an excellent student and uprooting his life for a few months doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when he’s already committed to a big-time program.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until the spring of 2021 to see Henderson again, but this time it’ll be in the colors of Scarlet and Gray.
