Ten Ohio State players named champions for Tulsa game

Just ten players graded out as “Champions” after the win against Tulsa.

After every game, Ohio State grades its players, with the coveted “Champion” being the desired outcome. It’s the highest grade the coaching staff bestows upon players based on their performance in the most recent game.

And, if you watched the Tulsa game, you may not be too surprised that Ohio State only named ten players Champions after pouring through the game film and various scenarios. If fact, only five players on offense and three on defense made the distinguished grade, with two special teams players also getting the nod.

Here are the ten players that the coaching staff highlighted after the 41-20 win over Tulsa.

Ohio State will look to make better on this list when it hosts Akron this Saturday under the lights. The Buckeyes are an early, heavy favorite to beat the Zips.

Five things we think we learned from Ohio State’s win over Tulsa

TreVeyon Henderson, the defense, Tulsa playing above their head, and more. #GoBucks

Ohio State got in the win column after dropping its first regular-season game under Ryan Day last week to Oregon. But it was far from a clinic on how to respond after a loss.

The Buckeyes found themselves in a dog fight throughout the game, even all the way into the fourth quarter before a touchdown on both the offensive side and defensive end provided enough breathing room for Ohio State fans to relax a wee-bit. In the end, it was a “closer than the score indicated” 41-20 win.

Still, though, this team is a work in progress clearly and there are some things that we can take away from this one (we think) and try to move things forward. Some are good, but most involve improvements needed.

Here are five things we think we learned after Ohio State’s win against Tulsa on Saturday afternoon.

NEXT … TreVeyon Henderson is a superstar … now.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson breaks Archie Griffin record for most rushing yards by a freshman

TreVeyon Henderson breaks record held by Archie Griffin since 1972.

We might just be seeing a changing of the guard in the Ohio State backfield. The Buckeyes are blessed with talent upon talent at the running back position, but there is just something different about TreVeyon Henderson.

Henderson has rattled off another long touchdown run for OSU to put the Buckeyes up by two touchdowns once again. This one was a little more special as Henderson just passed Ohio State royalty in the record books with most rushing yards in a single game by a freshman.

Archie Griffen has held that record since 1972 with 239 yards in a single game that came against the North Carolina Tarheels. Early in the fourth quarter, Henderson now has 244 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the day.

Check out the record-breaking run below.

TreVeyon Henderson is a special one folks and it looks like he’s ready to take the mantle right now.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson break off a big run and Ohio State score vs. Tulsa

TreVeyon Henderson was the unexpected starter today and he has not disappointed. The true freshman and No. 1 rated running back in the 2021 recruiting class has 126 yards rushing with two touchdowns against Tulsa so far this afternoon.

Henderson is averaging 7.4 yards per carry which were helped by a 48-yard run where the young back used speed, wiggle, and power to get into the endzone.

So far Henderson has been everything Buckeye fans had hoped for. The scoring scamper has put Ohio State up by two touchdowns early into the third quarter.

Watch the freshman phenom rumble 48-yards for the score below.

The Buckeyes are looking to add on to this score as they can’t afford a close game after last week’s loss to Oregon.

Ohio State loses to Oregon: 5 things we learned in defeat

There are not a lot of positives to take away from the loss to Oregon, but we honestly assess five takeaways from this one.

Well, it finally happened, the Ohio State football team lost its first regular-season game under Ryan Day. Most thought it might happen at least once this season considering Ohio State is breaking in a new quarterback and many new faces across the offense and defense, but I think we were all in denial a tad bit.

The Buckeyes lost to a very good Oregon Ducks football team by a score of 35-28 and were playing catchup all day. Oregon struggled with a pedestrian Fresno State team the week prior, but we know that this is a quality program that is going to be in the Pac-12 conference championship conversation. But even with that said, we still want to learn from each game, so here are five things that we reluctantly learned from this loss.

Next…You won’t like this one

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson scores first TD as Buckeye in electric fashion

And this is why TreVeyon Henderson was a 5-star recruit. Watch the burst.

Ohio State freshman running back TreVeyon Henderson has officially introduced himself to the college football world. With Minnesota in striking distance, having just kicked a field goal to pull within seven points, Henderson took a swing pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud out in the flat five yards downfield.

That’s not where the play ended though. Henderson found a seem, hit it hard, and showed the burst and vision that made him a 5-star recruit in the 2021 class. When it was all said and done, Henderson tallied his first career touchdown as a Buckeye, going 70-yards in a flash.

Watch the quick-strike ability Henderson provides the offense from the running back position for yourself.

Something tells me this won’t be the last big play touchdown we see from the freshman sensation. There’s a good chance he’s the future of the running back position at Ohio State.

Ohio State leads all programs with five players on ESPN’s True Freshmen All-American Team

Ohio State had one whale of a recruiting class for 2021. ESPN named five OSU commits on its True Freshmen Team.

The season is just around the corner of the Ohio State block, but we’re still getting some preseason lists and rankings filter through the news cycle as listicle content. I mean, we’ve done the same ourselves, because — well, the college offseason.

ESPN apparently isn’t done either. It published its Preseason True Freshman All-American Team on Monday and it’s littered with Buckeyes. It makes sense with all the five-star commitments and all, but some OSU freshmen were picked multiple times by the duo of Tom VanHaaren and Tom Luginbill.

In fact, Ohio State leads all schools with a mention of five different players named to the team and we’ve got them for you.

ESPN names six Ohio State players among top 50 college football newcomers

ESPN named six Ohio State players among the 50 best newcomers in college football. Who are they, and where do they rank?

College football is a sport in which the best players are generally a part of all the fun on Saturdays for just two to three years. It’s certainly not any different at Ohio State, and in a lot of cases, even more extreme. Most superstars show up, show out, then get on out to the NFL for a big payday.

But for every extraordinary athlete that leaves a program, a new superhuman one comes to replace him in places like Columbus, Norman, and Tuscaloosa. That means many of your household names were just in high school and will soon become some of the most followed and watched players in the game in the upcoming season and beyond.

On that note, ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren ran through a list of the top 50 newcomers (subscription required) to college football this fall and a whopping six Ohio State players made the list. So who are they, and where does the “worldwide leader in sports programming” rank the fresh faces to big-time college football?

We dive in.

Five Ohio State freshmen identified as potential Big Ten impact freshman by 247Sports

247Sports discussed potential impact freshmen across the country. When the Big Ten came around, five Ohio State players made the cut.

It’s no secret that the Ohio State football program recruits some of the top prospects in the country on an almost yearly basis. Top five ranked recruiting classes have become the norm. Many of those go on to have stellar careers in Columbus, and some even get a chance to make an impact right away as freshmen.

And you’d be hard-pressed to find another team in the Big Ten that gets so many freshmen contributing right away because a lot of the kids Ohio State recruits come right out of the box ready to insert into the big-time college football game.

And that’s where we look with one of the latest articles from 247Sports. Chris Hummer took a look at some of the freshmen players that could have an immediate impact across the country, guys you need to know, and when he wandered into the Big Ten, Hummer highlighted five players wearing scarlet and gray that you may want to take notice of.

Here they are.

Black Stripe Alert: Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson loses black stripe

Another true freshman officially becomes another member of the Ohio State football team.

Of all the early enrollees at Ohio State, none may have been more ballyhooed than five-star and No. 1 overall ranked running back TreVeyon Henderson. The Virginia native has been turning heads during spring practice drills and now Henderson is an official member of the Buckeye football team.

The Ohio State Football official Twitter account has shown several highlight-reel plays of the freshman phenom during practices so far. And from the looks of things, Henderson is every bit as good as advertised.

Henderson found out the news and shared with his teammates saying

“First, I want to thank God. And I want to thank everyone for pushing me and getting me better. I’m excited to be a Buckeye and I’m excited to be apart of this program. Go Bucks!”

I think it probably goes without saying, but Buckeye Nation is excited to have Henderson as a Buckeye just as much as he’s excited to be in scarlet and gray.

We’re looking forward to seeing big things from this kid in the fall.
