49ers LT Trent Williams wishes Aaron Donald retired, ‘but he deserved a new contract’

49ers left tackle Trent Williams was hoping Aaron Donald would retire, but he knows the Rams DT deserved a new contract

Everyone in the Rams’ building was hoping Aaron Donald would put off retirement and return for at least one more year this offseason. The same can’t be said about the team that resides some 340 miles north of the Rams’ headquarters.

49ers left tackle Trent Williams wishes Donald would’ve retired from the NFL and rode off into the sunset, never to have to face San Francisco’s offensive line again. Williams has a ton of respect for Donald, though, and knows he deserved the lucrative new contract he signed on Monday.

Being an interior defender, Donald doesn’t usually match up with Williams on the edge. He’s typically rushing against the guards and centers, but every now and then, the Rams line up Donald across from Williams in what’s a battle of two heavyweight fighters.

We’ll get to see these two players square off twice more in 2022 when the Rams and 49ers meet, with a potential third matchup coming in the playoffs like we had this past January.

Richard Sherman talks about that one time Trent Williams punched him in the face

Here’s how Sherman described it.

The inevitable 30 for 30 episode on the Legion of Boom Seahawks is going to be awesome. Not only were they the best team in football for several years – they were the most interesting, with a flair for the dramatic that was unrivaled in any sport.

Perhaps the most compelling character of the group was cornerback Richard Sherman, who had legendary feuds with some of the greatest players of his era. In his most recent podcast he shared some of those stories, beginning with the time he got the **** smacked out of him by 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, who was then with Washington. Here’s how Sherman described it.

“During the game there’s a few back and forths between Trent and I and Chris Clemons and a few other guys… Trent apparently took exception… The rest is history, as I say. We had a conversation right after that consequently, a text and phone conversation and cooler minds prevailed and we’ve been friends ever since. But, you know, the clip still lives.”

Hysterical.

While Sherman’s playing career is winding down, Williams is incredibly still going strong after 11 years and 149 games in the league. He earned a remarkable 97.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus last season.

Former Sooners OL Trent Williams on NFL’s 2022 All-Paid team

Heading into the 2022 season, former Sooners OL Trent Williams listed on NFL’s All-Paid team.

The Oklahoma Sooners have long boasted some of the best offensive lines in the country for much of the last two decades. In 2021, they had two players that were arguably the best at their position; Creed Humphrey at center and [autotag]Trent Williams[/autotag] at left tackle.

Williams who plays for the San Francisco 49ers was dominant in 2021, helping the 49ers reach the playoffs and dominate the Dallas Cowboys as a force in their patented rushing attack. Though he was a great player for Washington, he’s really taken his game to another level since joining the 49ers in 2020. He’s been to nine-straight Pro Bowls, but it wasn’t until 2021 that he earned his first All-Pro selection.

His consistency and elevated play has made him one of the highest players in the NFL and at an average annual value of $23 million a year, he’s the highest paid offensive lineman in football.

Williams is a bully among men — as seen herehere and here. Williams earned a 97.8 Pro Football Focus grade last season, by far the highest mark in the NFL. When Williams re-signed in March 2021, he surpassed Packers All-Pro David Bakhtiari by just $10,000 per season for this distinction. – Anthony Holzman-Escareno, NFL.com

Only 10 non-quarterbacks make more than Trent Williams in average annual value. He’s been a model of consistency during his 11-year NFL career. He’s never played fewer than 10 games in a season and only played fewer than 13 games three times in his career.

Going into his age 34 season, Williams will be counted on once again to help the San Francisco 49ers get back to the playoffs in 2022.

ChampU BBQ: Who’s coming to Norman for the Oklahoma Sooners mega recruiting event?

The ChampU BBQ is right around the corner and with the Oklahoma Sooners hosting several top prospects, here’s a running list of who will be coming to Norman.

The ChampU BBQ has been extremely kind to the Oklahoma Sooners these last few years and it figures that as long as they keep hosting it, it will always remain that way. Generally, the Sooners’ have an absolutely elite collection of talent in Norman during the summer at a time when school is no longer a factor and prospects are focusing on recruiting.

Last year, the Sooners had flashy luxury cars and every notable Oklahoma player of the past that they could find in attendance. Adrian Peterson was there. Kyler Murray was there. CeeDee Lamb was in attendance. Sam Bradford and Lane Johnson were in the building. Roy Williams was there. Marquise Brown and Billy Sims joined the party. Kenneth Murray and Trent Williams were in attendance.

The event serves as the Sooners’ premier recruiting event of the calendar year and every year it seems to deliver as commitments follow shortly after.

Will this year under a new regime bring the same results? We don’t know but what we do know is who will be in attendance for this mega event.

We’ve taken the liberty of chronicling every confirmed ChampU BBQ visitor below.

Commanders re-sign center Keith Ismael

The Commanders retained center Keith Ismael, who signed his exclusive-rights free agent tender.

Keith Ismael accepted and signed an exclusive rights tender with the Washington Commanders Tuesday, according to the league’s transaction wire.

The reserve center was drafted out of San Diego State in the 2020 NFL draft by Washington in the 5th round (156 overall).

You may recall that during the morning of Day 3 of the 2020 draft, Washington traded unhappy Trent Williams to San Francisco for a 2020 third-round pick (74 overall) which Washington used to draft cornerback Benjamin St-Juste. Also included in the deal was the fifth-round pick (156) which Washington used to select Ismael.

Ismael signed a 4-year $3.61 million dollar rookie deal and appeared in 8 games his rookie season, seeing only 34 special teams snaps and 4 offensive snaps.

However, the former Aztec was released on August 31, 2021, as the preseason was concluding, but brought back to the practice squad before the regular season began.

When Chase Roullier’s season ended against Denver in week 8 (Oct 31, 2021) Ismael was elevated to the roster, on Nov. 4, appeared in 10 games, starting 5 games at center.

The Commanders had offered Ismael the exclusive rights tender in mid-March. Ismael is thus agreeing to sign, report and again compete for a roster spot. He does offer some “position-flex” as Coach Ron likes to call it, in that he can play both center and guard.

Oklahoma Sooners with the ninth-most players selected in the NFL draft since 2000

Highlighted by a trio of quarterbacks selected first overall, the Oklahoma Sooners rank ninth in the nation in draft picks since 2000.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been arguably the most consistent team in the country since they won their national championship in 2000. Though they haven’t been able to add that eighth national title, their run of success in the Big 12 conference and consecutive seasons with a winning record is unmatched throughout college football.

One of the reasons is the talent they’ve found through recruiting that they’ve developed for the next level.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Oklahoma Sooners rank ninth in draft picks since 2000. The Sooners will have a great chance to climb these rankings with 12 players declared for the 2022 NFL draft. It’s not likely that all of them will be selected in the seven-round draft, but it has a chance to match the 2019 class who had eight players selected.

The Sooners have had 11 players selected in the first round, highlighted by first overall picks Sam Bradford, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray. In addition to the quarterbacks, they’ve had another five players taken inside the top 10 of the draft since 2000.

Their best draft class was the 2010 class that saw Bradford go No. 1, Gerald McCoy was selected third overall, Trent Williams went fourth, and Jermaine Gresham was the 21st overall pick to the Cincinnati Bengals. No other draft class has had more than two first-round picks since 2000.

The 2005 class had the most players selected with 11. That group was highlighted by Jammal Brown and Mark Clayton, who went in the first round.

The NFL combine is right around the corner, with pro day to follow, it’s still up in the air as to who will be the Sooners’ top pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Perrion Winfrey, Nik Bonitto, and Brian Asamoah have been the names considered in the second round in some of the latest mock drafts.

CeeDee Lamb to play in his first Pro Bowl

Another Sooner is announced as a Pro Bowler as CeeDee Lamb joins Trent Williams, Kyler Murray, Mark Andrews, Joe Mixon, and Orlando Brown.

After his best season as a pro to date, former Sooners star CeeDee Lamb will be a Pro Bowler. The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver becomes the sixth Sooner to make the Pro Bowl this year.

The dynamic receiver will join an NFC receiving unit that includes San Francisco receiver Deebo Samuel, Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson, and Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans (who will be filling in for injured Green Bay mega star Davante Adams).

Following the Pro Bowl, it’ll be rest and back to work for Lamb, who could be taking on a much bigger role next year for the Cowboys. Dallas has some interesting roster decisions to make with wide receivers Michael Gallup and Amari Cooper. Gallup will be an unrestricted free agent and though it appears that Cooper will be back, he carries a significant cap hit.

Lamb’s rapport with quarterback Dak Prescott grew this year but drops and miscommunication spoiled what could’ve been an even more special season statistically for the former Sooner. CeeDee Lamb is still scratching the surface of what he can be and this season and Pro Bowl selection are just a taste of what he’s destined to become.

Duane Brown to take the place of Trent Williams in 2022 Pro Bowl

Left tackle Duane Brown will be taking the place of Trent Williams of the 49ers.

The Seahawks had two players initially selected to play in the 2022 Pro Bowl. Both Bobby Wagner and Quandre Diggs will be unable to play due to injuries, though. However, Seattle is still going to get two representatives in the annual NFL all-star game thanks to alternates.

Earlier today, the team announced that Russell Wilson would be replacing Tom Brady on the NFC roster due to an injury for the Bucs quarterback. Now, the Seahawks have announced another injury replacement. Left tackle Duane Brown will be taking the place of Trent Williams of the 49ers.

Widely regarded as the best left tackle in the league, Williams only allowed one sack, six quarterback hits and 16 hurries all season. He also earned the highest run blocking grade among offensive linemen from Pro Football Focus by a wide margin.

Brown had an off-year by his high standards but is still one of the better left tackles in football. This will be the fifth Pro Bowl appearance in Brown’s career and his second with Seattle.

League-high 9 Sooners in action on NFL’s conference championship weekend

Oklahoma has a league-high nine former Sooners playing in the NFL’s conference championship weekend. Here’s a look at the nine in action.

There will be plenty of Oklahoma representation during the NFL’s conference championship weekend. Nine former Sooners are on active rosters and will be in action on Sunday looking to advance to Super Bowl LVI.

It’s worth noting that former Sooner Jordan Evans is also a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, but Evans suffered a torn ACL in week five against the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s a look at the nine Sooners in action this weekend.

Only 2 players on 49ers injury report for NFC championship

The #49ers have 2 players on their injury report for the NFC championship, including LT Trent Williams.

The 49ers are relatively healthy going into the NFC championship game vs. the Rams on Sunday with only two players listed on the injury report. That’s the good news. The bad news is one of those players is starting left tackle Trent Williams, and the other is running back Jeff Wilson Jr. Both are officially ‘questionable.’

Williams went through Friday’s early walkthrough after missing the first two days of practice this week as he continues dealing with an ankle sprain he suffered in the divisional playoffs against the Packers. He was officially listed as a non-participant in practice though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Williams is adamant he’ll play Sunday, but that doesn’t mean the medical staff will clear him to participate.

If he can’t go, second-year OL Colton McKivitz would slide in at left tackle. McKivitz played well in a start there in Week 18 when Williams missed the game with an elbow sprain.

Wilson hurt his ankle on special teams in the divisional round. While his role on offense has declined since Elijah Mitchell returned, he’s a good special teams contributor and a quality backup if Mitchell is unavailable. If Wilson can’t go, rookie Trey Sermon would most likely suit up and fill in on special teams.
