Vikings Film Room: Christian Darrisaw is an elite left tackle

The Vikings’ left tackle is emerging into a star

After trading down nine spots in the 2021 NFL draft, there wasn’t a lot of hope for the Vikings to land Darrisaw. He was projected to go in the teens and the league let him slide down to 23.

Coming out of Virginia Tech, Darrisaw had a lot of potential but needed some grooming. It didn’t help that he had to have multiple core muscle surgeries that caused him to miss the start of the season.

He had a solid rookie season and even had some in the media comparing him to All-Pro tackle Trent Williams. Those comparisons felt somewhat absurd at the time but they are proving to be more and more correct each week.

This past week, Darrisaw had a tremendous game that shot him up to being PFF’s second-best tackle. There were multiple examples of his dominance and we highlighted eight of them.

49ers injury report: Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, Jimmie Ward all IN vs. Chiefs

The #49ers will be as healthy as they’ve been in a long time when they face the Chiefs on Sunday.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday delivered the club’s Week 7 injury report for their matchup against the Chiefs. The bits of good news continued to trickle in after a week of positive steps on the health front for San Francisco.

Here’s who’s in, out and questionable Sunday:

49ers could get 2 stars back vs. Chiefs

The #49ers could get two of their injured stars back for the Chiefs game.

The 49ers head into their toughest matchup of the year facing a mountain of adversity on the injury front. That mountain could look more like a molehill if San Francisco can get a couple of their injured stars back though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday intimated the team could get defensive end Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams back as early as next week.

Bosa injured his groin during the team’s Week 5 win over the Panthers. He missed the first two days of practice in the lead up to Week 6, but got a limited session in Friday before ultimately being listed as ‘questionable.’ Shanahan said the star DE had a chance to play Sunday before being ruled out at game time.

If Bosa had a chance to play Sunday, another week removed from the initial injury presumably gives him a better chance to suit up against Kansas City.

Williams has been out since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 3. He’s been on the field moving around during warm ups during the last couple games and Shanahan responded in the affirmative when asked if Williams had a chance to go against Kansas City.

There’s no practice participation report until Wednesday which will give us a better idea of where Bosa and Williams are in their recoveries. Shanahan will speak to the media Monday and Wednesday before practice at which point he may have a more specific answer for each player’s availability in the biggest game of the year for the 49ers.

NFL fans absolutely loved ESPN’s ‘Only Injuries in the Building’ animated graphic for the 49ers

The 49ers have to solve the injury mystery of The Arconia.

The 49ers entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations. A year after making their second NFC title game appearance in three seasons, many thought San Francisco was capable of such play. Unfortunately, injuries have already started to sink some of those ambitions.

Four games into their 2022 campaign, the 49ers have lost their starting quarterback in Trey Lance (ankle; for the season), the NFL’s arguable best tackle in Trent Williams (ankle), and starting running back Elijah Mitchell. It’s a brutal scenario for a team in the conversation for the top roster in football.

It’s also an injury situation that ESPN decided to make light of before the 49ers took the Rams (-1.5) on Monday Night Football with an incredible graphic referencing the Hulu show Only Murders in the Building:

Oh … my goodness? Whoever decided to greenlight “Only Injuries in the Building” in a way that has 300-plus pound Trent Williams in a spooky tall New York apartment building — kudos to you. I hope you get everything you dream of in life, including creating more references to delightful shows on streaming services.

49ers hopeful Trent Williams can avoid surgery, IR

Kyle Shanahan is still holding out hope Trent Williams can avoid surgery and a stint on IR.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Thursday still didn’t have an update on the high ankle sprain left tackle Trent Williams suffered in Sunday night’s loss in Denver.

Shanahan said he’s hopeful Williams can avoid surgery and that the team can avoid placing him on Injured Reserve.

If Williams goes on IR he’ll be required to miss four weeks, which is typically the minimum time frame for return on that type of injury. However, the club can only designate eight players per season to return from IR.

Given that it’s Week 3 and San Francisco already anticipates bringing RB Elijah Mitchell, FS Jimmie Ward, DL Jordan Willis and LB Curtis Robinson off IR, they’re halfway through their allotted returnees off IR. That’s why TE Tyler Kroft and RB Tyrion Davis-Price have both stayed off IR despite their injuries keeping them out for prolonged periods.

While the 49ers may hope to keep Williams off IR, they might not have a choice if the ankle keeps him out for more than a few weeks. Moving him to IR would open up a roster spot San Francisco could use to either replace him or add depth at another position. Jason Poe, Leroy Watson, Keith Ismael and Alfredo Gutierrez are the four in-house options on the offensive line on the practice squad.

Shanahan will speak with media again Saturday ahead of Monday’s game.

49ers injury update: LT Trent Williams could be out 4-to-6 weeks

Some #49ers injury updates from head coach Kyle Shanahan, including a diagnosis for Trent Williams, who’ll be out awhile.

The 49ers are dealing with a slew of significant injuries after Sunday night’s loss to the Denver Broncos. They could be without starters Trent Williams and Azeez Al-Shaair for a significant stretch of games.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call with reporters said Williams has a high ankle sprain that could keep him out between four and six weeks, although he expressed some uncertainty when asked about a specific timeframe for Williams’ return.

“No, the swelling’s pretty bad,” Shanahan said. “So high-ankles are usually, just for everyone, they say four-to-six, but sometimes it can be sooner and sometimes it can be longer. So that’s why I didn’t give an exact date, too early to tell.”

It would be significant for San Francisco if they were able to get Williams back in just four weeks. Replacing him won’t be easy, and their schedule gets tougher down the stretch. If the 49ers are going to make a run similar to last year’s, it will require Williams to be in the lineup and playing well.

The Al-Shaair injury is an MCL sprain according to Shanahan. He got hurt when Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson fell into him late in the game.

Shanahan said the injury is similar to the one 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell sustained, so the expectation is Al-Shaair will also be out six-to-eight weeks.

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles was the first LB off the bench Sunday night. He figures to continue filling in at the Sam LB spot as long as Al-Shaair is out.

Another more minor injury Shanahan announced was a rib issue for tight end Ross Dwelley. He’s day-to-day.

49ers LT Trent Williams ‘most likely’ has high ankle sprain

Some #49ers injury updates following Sunday night’s loss:

Trent Williams is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain during the 49ers’ dismal Week 3 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Williams left the game in the third quarter on a play where Jimmy Garoppolo gave up a key safety by stepping out of the back of the endzone. The left tackle got rolled up from behind and limped off the field.

In his post-game press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Williams “most likely” sustained a high ankle sprain.

Williams battled through a similar injury during the NFC Championship Game loss to the Rams last season. At this early stage in the season, it would appear likely the All-Pro will miss some time.

Shanahan also said linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair had most likely suffered an MCL injury. Al-Shaair left the game in the second half and did not return.

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles stepped in for Al-Shaair and will be expected to get the strongside linebacker snaps on base downs in Al-Shaair’s likely absence.

49ers injury update: Trent Williams ruled OUT vs. Broncos

Trent Williams has officially been ruled OUT for the #49ers.

The 49ers announced left tackle Trent Williams is officially ruled out vs. the Broncos with an ankle injury.

Williams left the game early in the third quarter when he got rolled up on by center Jake Brendel. He also dealt with an ankle injury last year late in the season. A high ankle sprain kept him out of Week 18 vs. the Rams, and it bothered him into the NFC championship game.

The cart was brought out to take Williams to the locker room. He chose to walk off instead.

Williams since joining the 49ers in 2020 has missed four games – two in each season.

There’s no word on how bad the ankle injury is, but the 49ers don’t have a great replacement for him. Jaylon Moore was first off the bench at LT, but Colton McKivitz replaced him after a couple series.

49ers LT Trent Williams limps off field vs. Broncos

Trent Williams denied the cart and walked to the locker room instead.

It was the sight the 49ers did not want to see.

Early in the third quarter Sunday night, left tackle Trent Williams got rolled up on by 49ers center Jake Brendel and appeared to hurt his leg.

The cart came out to take Williams to the locker room, but he opted to walk off with help instead.

Jaylon Moore is the replacement for Williams.

49ers clear $4.36 million in cap space via Trent Williams’ contract

Trent Williams reworked his deal and generated $4.36 million in cap space for the 49ers.

The 49ers on Saturday converted $5.45 million of Trent Williams’ base salary into a signing bonus per ESPN’s Field Yates. The move generates $4.36 million in cap space for San Francisco.

In-season cap space gives the team flexibility to make signings or trades, and gives some room for paying incentives like the ones in Deebo Samuel and Jimmy Garoppolo’s contracts.

Prior to the move, the 49ers were working with about $3.7 million in space per Over the Cap. Now they’ll sit a touch over $8 million following the reworking of Williams’ deal.

Cap space could become an important thing to watch for the 49ers going into an offseason where a Nick Bosa extension is coming, and where the door is open to a Jimmy Garoppolo return at a deal that would far eclipse the one he restructured to for 2022.

Williams originally signed his mammoth six-year, $138.06 million contract last offseason. This redoing of his deal will be largely inconsequential over the life of the contract, assuming he continues playing like one of the NFL’s best left tackles for the next four or five seasons.
