Southern Miss sends the Tigers packing in Game 7 of the Hattiesburg Regional

The Tigers’ season came to an end in the regional final on Monday evening.

Two of the best words in all of sports: Game 7.

It was do-or-die for LSU and Southern Miss as they squared off for the third time this weekend at the Hattiesburg Regional. Despite winning their first two games of the postseason, the Tigers couldn’t close things out and saw their season end in an 8-7 shootout.

[autotag]Ma’Khail Hillard[/autotag] got the start on the mound in the big game. Southen Miss got on the board early as the first batter of the game hit a solo shot to make it 1-0 Golden Eagles. LSU answered back with a big first inning of their own as the Tigers plated three runs thanks to a two-RBI single from [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and a bunt single for an RBI by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 3-1 Tigers after one.

In the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] made his presence felt as he hit a solo shot of his own to make it 4-1 LSU.

In the top of the fourth inning, [autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag], the Tigers’ closer, came in to try and eat up some innings and retain the LSU lead. Southern Miss proceeded to score two runs and cut the lead to 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU loaded the bases with two outs but they were unable to score any runs as [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] struck out to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Southern Miss loaded the bases on [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 4-4.

That brought [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] out of the bullpen for LSU and the first hitter he faced ripped a single to left field to score the go-ahead run as the Golden Eagles took a 5-4 lead. After a four-pitch walk to load the bases, [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] was brought out of the bullpen to try and get LSU out of the jam only down by one run.

The first batter Vietmeier faced hit a two-RBI single to right field to make it 7-4 Golden Eagles before the Tigers finally got out of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Berry walked, Doughty doubled, and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-5. Thompson then grounded one up the middle to make it a one-run game.

Still two outs, runners on first and second for [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag]. McManus struck out, but the Tigers were able to score two runs and cut it to a one-run game as we headed to the eighth inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag] entered the game looking to help the Tigers keep the momentum going from the bottom of the seventh. He did his job as he retired the Golden Eagles 1-2-3 and kept the momentum rolling for the Tigers.

Dugas, Bianco, and Pearson were due up for LSU. On a 3-1 count, Gavin Dugas hit a solo home run to tie the game at seven. With two outs, Crews drew a walk to put him on first base as Berry stepped into the box.

That elicited a pitching change from Southern Miss. Berry grounded out, and we went to the ninth inning tied 7-7. In the top of the ninth, Southern Miss scored a run on a sacrifice fly to take an 8-7 lead as we headed to the bottom of the ninth.

This was it, do-or-die. How would the Tigers respond?

Doughty, Morgan, and Thompson were due up for LSU. Doughty grounded out to third for out No. 1. Morgan grounded out to second, and Thompson struck out as the Tigers fell 8-7. With that, the season is over for LSU. Southern Miss will advance to the super regional as a host and will play Ole Miss.

Tigers fall in SEC Tournament vs. Tennessee, face elimination on Saturday

LSU didn’t have enough on offense to topple the Volunteers, and it will have to win a rematch against Kentucky on Saturday to stay alive.

Round 3 in the winner’s bracket of the 2022 SEC Tournament pitted the Tigers against the No. 1 team in the Southeastern Conference and the whole country, the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Vols proved they are the top team for a reason, as they won 5-2 to advance to the semifinals. LSU meanwhile, faces elimination in a rematch against Kentucky on Saturday.

[autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] got the start on the mound, and UT did not greet him kindly as it scored three runs in the first two innings to jump out to an early lead that it held until the top of the fifth. In that frame, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI double to score [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag], and [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] followed that with an RBI of his own to cut the lead to 3-2.

Tennessee scored two more runs on Floyd in the bottom of the fifth to increase its lead back to three runs.

[autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] came in to pitch for the final out of the fifth inning. Floyd’s final line was 4.2 innings pitched allowing five runs on six hits, three walks and five strikeouts.

Vietmeier stayed in to pitch for the rest of the game as he went 3.1 innings allowing zero runs on zero hits and three strikeouts. However, LSU was unable to score any more runs against the potent Tennessee pitching staff.

With the loss, LSU moves to the loser’s bracket and now has a date with the Wildcats, who have been something of a tournament darling as they’ve won two games as a 12-seed. The first pitch for that game will likely be 30 minutes after the conclusion of Alabama vs. Florida, which begins at 9:30 a.m. CT.

LSU baseball takes a bite out of the Colonels on Tuesday night

It was a nice tuneup game for the Tigers as they prepare for a road series against Alabama this weekend.

Let’s turn up on a Tuesday night in Baton Rouge, shall we?

Last week, LSU had a disappointing mid-week loss at New Orleans and they entered this game with the hope of turning things around. The Tigers did just that against the Nicholls State Colonels in a 10-6 win that was an even bigger blowout until a ninth-inning rally.

[autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU as coach Johnson threw a few different pitchers tonight. Also, it turns out [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] (the number one ranked college prospect, per the MLB network) and freshman [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] are pretty good at the whole baseball thing.

Pearson finished the game 3-for-6 with five RBI and two homers, and Berry finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and one homer. In the bottom of the second inning, LSU got on the board with a RBI single by Pearson followed by a Berry RBI single to make it 2-0 Tigers.

In the bottom of the third inning, LSU scored five runs starting with a [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] RBI single followed by a Pearson three-run homer and a Berry solo homer to make the score 7-0 after only three innings.

The Tigers would start to sub a bunch of regulars out of the lineup for some young guns to get them some playing time, but that would not keep them from scoring even more runs as they scored one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-0 lead.

Pearson hit his second homer of the game as he blasted one to dead center in the bottom of the fifth. [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and [autotag]Whit Merrifield[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, Nicholls started attempting to mount a comeback as they scored a run due to a solo homer to left-center field to get the Colonels on the board. In the top of the ninth, the Colonels scored on an RBI single and a wild pitch to make it 10-3 Tigers with no one out and runners on the corners.

[autotag]Will Hellmers[/autotag] was then called into the game to try and close out the win. The first batter he faced laced an RBI double to right field which led to another pitching change as [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] would come out of the bullpen with runners on second and third with no one out and a 10-4 lead.

The first batter he faced hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-5 Tigers, but it got the first out of the inning. His second batter grounded out for out number two, but his third batter hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 10-6 with two down and a runner on second.

So, in came [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag], who struck out the only hitter he faced as the Tigers won 10-6. With the win, LSU improves to 30-14 (12-9 SEC). The Tigers will take a trip to Tuscaloosa for a weekend series with the Alabama Crimson Tide starting Friday night at 6 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball takes series against Mississippi State with Game 2 win

LSU held on to clinch the series against the Bulldogs with a 4-3 win on Saturday.

After the dramatic win on Friday night against Mississippi State, LSU was looking to win Game 2 and take the weekend series.

It was a tight game in Starkville on Saturday, but the Tigers prevailed with a 4-3 win to secure a series victory and bounce back from a loss last weekend to Auburn. Now, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and his team will look for a series sweep in Sunday’s Game 3.

[autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] took the mound for the Tigers and LSU started it off on the right foot as [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] hit a three-run Berry blast in the top of the first to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the first, Mississippi State got two of those runs back as it scored on a solo home run and an error to cut the lead to 3-2 after one inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs tied it up with another solo home run off of Money.

That chased him from the mound, and he was replaced by [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag]. Money’s final line was four innings pitched, two earned runs, one walk and five strikeouts. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Dylan Fontenot[/autotag] came in to pitch.

He got a strikeout to end the inning and keep it tied at 3-3. [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to give LSU the lead 4-3.

Going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the score remained 4-3 Tigers. [autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag] remained on the mound to try and secure the series win, and he struck out the side. LSU will play Game 3 looking for a sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU evens the series with Auburn with a big win in Game 2

LSU dominated on Friday night to set up a decisive Game 3 at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

LSU came into Friday night’s Game 2 looking to rebound after Thursday’s tough one-run loss to Auburn. A big offensive performance allowed the right Tigers to even up the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

If [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] keeps pitching like he has been lately, “Mike Day” will become a Baton Rouge holiday. The fifth-year senior came out and absolutely shoved Friday as he pitched 5.1 innings giving up four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

That is a very welcome sight for all Tiger fans and especially coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag]. Offensively, things started just as they did last night with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, this time by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

 

In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] added to the lead with an RBI double that scored [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag].

That was followed by an RBI single from Crews to plate Doughty and make it 3-0 LSU after five full innings.

Auburn finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. LSU gained some breathing room again in the bottom of the seventh thanks to [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] to make it 8-2 LSU.

In the bottom of the eighth, Travinski scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 as heading into the final inning. [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] came in to pitch the top of the ninth and he was able to retire Auburn without allowing a run.

Saturday’s decisive Game 3 is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.
